Minecraft for consoles exclusive to Xbox 360, building spring 2012 launch
60
Markus "Notch" Persson has confirmed via Twitter that the console version of Minecraft, announced during E3 for Xbox 360, will be exclusive to Microsoft's system (meaning no PSN or WiiWare versions). The game will arrive on Xbox Live in the spring of 2012.
Those heading to MineCon in Las Vegas next month will be able to try out the Xbox 360 version. The PC version is also being completed, having already sold millions in its beta state. Those heading to MineCon will receive alpha codes for Mojang's Scrolls and Cobalt.

I have all three systems, but I feel for you; this game really should be over more consoles. As it is now, it's not for consoles, just *ONE* console, so you might as well say "XBox Exclusive".
But who knows in the future? If Microsoft doesn't hammer them too much in their contract, it can eventually come out for other consoles at a later date, assuming sales are good on the XBox.

You don't need any kind of special PC to play Minecraft...

Uh... It runs on Java, and Java is the king of memory leakage, so yeah, I'd say you DO need a pretty good machine to run Minecraft.
Most of the time I'm seeing 1-2 gigs of memory in use just for playing, don't get me started on serving as a server.

It's more of a survival game than just "making things out of squares". Think of this, you're put on an island with nothing. You have a day to create a shelter and get the necessary materials to stay alive because at night, a bunch of zombies, skeletons, giant spiders, and exploding green things come out. Once you get settled enough where can hide at night it's about upgrading. You use wood to get stone, use stone to get iron, iron to get diamond, and then diamond to get obsidian. Once you have obsidian you can get to The Nether (which is a hell-like other dimension) and get a bunch of new things and new challenges.
There is obviously a LOT more to it than just that. But that's the basic concept of Minecraft. The great thing about it though is that there is no specific set of rules that you have to follow in order to play. You can play however you want.

At least I'm not using an age old memetic device from the internet.
Not that I'd expect someone who uses age old memetic devices to understand what that even means.

Notch changes his statements and EULAs like a Minecraft Player changes Skins; especially when it comes to possibilities of making money.
Expect him to say "Oh, I said exclusive, but here's PS3!" soon enough.

It's not exclusive to the xperia play you can download it off the android marketplace for any phone.
And even before that if you could still install it on any android phone when it was "exclusive" to the XP.

I can't imagine this game is very well suited to consoles anyway.

@crazybi0 - more like a giant nuclear bomb in a pan. Not too many games can claim the number of sales Minecraft has had to date WHILE IN BETA. And then there's the folks that will pick it up once it goes 'gold' ..
That said, it's not for everyone.

Limbo was a 360 exclusive for a while, then it came out on PS3. Who knows....

@Roto13
The majority of those games that were exclusive for a while were only exclusive because the developers signed a deal to get in on one of MSs seasonal promotions.
There a ton of other games which are and always have been exclusive to XBLA.

still sad that there's no Super Meat Boy on PSN. ohh well, now that all the hype has pretty much died down for that game it's probably not even worth it to release it on PSN.

Having not played Minecraft but looking at the ship in that screenshot, can you actually create a ship (or any kind of vehicle) that can move?

I've seen videos of moving vehicles but as far as I can tell they're only useable in singleplayer. and the 360 version is supposedly stripped down so it's questionable if you'd be able to even build the same things on the first day without patches.

Sony has a ton of 1st and 3rd party exclusives for their system anyways. I don't mean to troll, but it seems like MS is really losing out against Sony in terms of exclusives recently.

I think he's right. Sony has Microsoft beat (for me at least, it is still preference) in terms of exclusives. Both downloadable and retail. The only two games I can think of on XBLA that I would want to play is Splosion Man, Bastion, and Minecraft (even though I have a PC). We got Dead Nation, all the Pixeljunk games, Echochrome, Flower, Journey (soon), Fat Princess (which is a lot better after all the updates), Joe Danger, Sam and Max, etc.

There are Sam & Max games on XBLA. There's also that recent article on Joystiq which has Joe Danger rated by the Korean ratings board for XBLA.
XBLA also has all the Twisted Pixel games, Crimson Alliance, Half-Minute Hero, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Monday Night Combat, Shadow Complex, Darwinia, The Dishwasher games, the Toy Soldiers games, Trenched, Trials, etc... the list goes on. All of them available only on XBLA (with some on PC via services such as steam and GFWL)
