Come, children, gather 'round the space fire and let Uncle Stabby tell you the story of the Exterminatus. You see, Orks haven't been the only threat facing our people: A long time ago, our kind used to be plagued by bugs; a special breed of soldier was created to combat the insect threat, known as The Orkin Men.
Okay, so we made all of that up -- Exterminatus is not some lucrative tie-in for Space Marine, it's that free DLC THQ promised us early last month. It's finally available for download today on both the PS3 and PC (Xbox 360 version will be live "soon"), the big draw being co-op gameplay for up to four people at a time across the add-on's two different scenarios. A mandatory update will add the stand-alone mode to the main menu of Space Marine the next time you boot it up.
Stand-alone Exterminatus Mode Available To Download And Play Now
AGOURA HILLS, Calif. Oct 25, 2011 – THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) today announced that the co-op mode for Warhammer® 40,000®: Space Marine®, 'Exterminatus' is available on Playstation®3 and PC to download for free. The version for the Xbox 360®video game and entertainment system from Microsoft will go live soon.
Players who log onto Playstation® Network or STEAM® will be prompted to download a small update which will add Exterminatus to the menu system and guide them through the add-on content download. The process for Xbox®360 will be the same when it goes live.
Space Marine's Exterminatus mode pits an elite squad of four Space Marines against hordes of alien enemies in a score based fight to the death. Players can choose the Tactical Marine, Devastator or Assault Marine as well as utilizing any weapons and perks available to those classes.
Each of Exterminatus Mode's scenarios, 'Assault on Hab Center Andreas' and 'Escape From Kalkys Facility,' feature global leader boards challenging players to better their scores by completing dynamic challenges as well as utilizing score modifiers which increase game difficulty in exchange for additional points.
Experience earned while playing this mode counts towards the game's multiplayer ranks, allowing players to earn progression in both Co-Op and multiplayer.
Jim Huntley, Vice President of Global Brand Management commented,
"We are delighted to be able to reward the loyal fans of Space Marine with a new free mode to extend and enhance their game play experience. Exterminatus will provide a rewarding new challenge to players old and new."
Space Marine's Exterminatus mode is available to download for free on the Playstation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC. The Xbox®360 version will be available for free soon.
About Space Marine
When wave after wave of savage ORKS descend upon the Forge World GRAIA, it is up to humanity's greatest warriors to win the planet back.
They are SPACE MARINES, genetically modified, encased in hallowed armor, the equivalent of one hundred lesser men. They live only to defend the Imperium, and to slay its enemies in a war that never ends.
CAPTAIN TITUS, along with his comrades LEANDROS and SIDONUS, lead a detachment of these Space Marines onto the Forge World. There, they quickly discover that the fight against the Orks is not all that requires their attention. An Imperial Inquisitor named DROGAN needs help securing an experimental POWER SOURCE, before the Orks do so themselves.
