Riot Games CEO Brandon Beck gave the closing keynote at last week's IGDA Leadership Forum in Los Angeles, California, and during the talk (in which he made the point that "Riot's secret weapon all along" has been its employees), he gave a few interesting examples of how Riot's staff had really gone the extra distance to turn League of Legends into the successful online phenomenon it is today.
His first example was about the matchmaking system -- originally, Riot struggled to make sure that players were matched up against each other in an interesting and effective way, and the company ended up bringing in not a game developer, but a programmer with a PhD in computational biology whose "thinking was radically different and compelling," according to Beck.
A month after this hire, the company had a whole new matchmaking system, and in the end, it turned out to be "too fair" -- the games were too close. Since "what players remember are the outliers," according to Beck, the team developed "snowball items," which were "risky purchases that rewarded flawless execution." That bit of gameplay mixed up the matches, and came to be the system the game uses today.
Beck also talked about the free-to-play title's item store, which originally wasn't built by Riot alone, but with another technical partner. That partner, says Beck, wasn't ready for the scale of the game when it launched in 2009, and as a result, "we were stuck without a critical feature, which also happened to be our primary revenue mechanism." Riot employees took on the task of building their own store for the title "from scratch in less than 30 days," which has of course since generated plenty of purchases for the company.
Finally, Beck commended his team on the split they had to carry out inside the European servers for the game. While the decision was unpopular with many players, the team worked hard to share as much information with players as possible about why the change was happening, including setting up a full television studio in the company, and running a 17-hour live stream featuring different members of the team talking about the change.
Beck closed by repeating that all of this was possible because of Riot's "fundamental core cultural tenet, where we aspire to be the most player-centric games company possible." League of Legends is a powerhouse in online gaming today, but it was interesting to hear that there were a few close calls over the years.

'Over the years' they only came out with 2 or 3 levels to play with... don't care how hard they claim they work I ain't going back to this game until they get more levels in, its way overdue. Only a handful of employees can concept and make the champions so what does the rest to riot staff do all day just play it? where are the level designs?

@Evi1Genius League of Legends actually has more maps than any other MOBA game out there. They have Twisted Treeline for 3v3 and Dominion which no MOBA game has. Dominion is even a whole new game mode in itself.

@Jenks Maybe he doesn't remember Demigod because no one played it.

@anatomyishorror exactly. LoL is more well known within the tournament scene and has a much bigger userbase. Why would I play Demigod let alone hear of it when I'm playing the most popular one?

@Electrium
Wasn't DotA completely free and not backed by millions of dollars?
@chrisredfield31
Bloodline Champions has 14 maps and 3 game modes.
Demigod had 8 maps and 2 game modes (one similar to Dominion).
Heroes of Newerth has 3 maps and a Map Editor.
Realm of the Titans is still beta with 2 maps and plays similar to Dominion.
DotA 2 is made by Valve whom always makes available mod/map tools eventually.

@Evi1Genius I remember Brad Shoemaker (Giant Bomb) said the following and it's pretty true: That "one level" you speak of is to the MOBA genre as the baseball diamond is to baseball.
So many games and sports have a single stage - that's part of what makes it what it is. League of Legends has Twisted Treeline and Crystal Scar as well as the original, and sure it's nice to have a change from time to time, but as someone who plays a bunch of LoL, it's never long before I return to Summoners Rift because that's where the real game's at.

Nevertheless that is pathetic. LoL is a cash cow and riot has the resources to make more levels as was originally designed if they wanted to. But they won't bother to release any new features as its currently popular enough its busting their servers. I can see nothing new coming out of this game for a while so you play with what you get.
Don't tell me that Dominion is their new addition, they should have come out with at least 5 other levels with that game mode. Not even that is enough content to compete with games like unreal tournament that have multiple levels of that mode of play.

That one map(Summoner's Rift) was enough for me. It's not the map that made that game but the people playing it.

They managed to make a fair matchmaking system...? that's exactly what I'd like to see in other multiplayer games.. I'd much prefer some kind of eitherway tension rather than 1 team gets demolished, pre-decided outcomes are boring

See, the whole "too fair" thinking is emblematic to me of something wrong with modern devs. They seem to think games should be one-sided when the close matches are a hundred times more fun than the steamrolls.
I want a game that seesaws back and forth between winner and loser. I don't want a game decided in the first two minutes followed by ten minutes of mop up.

@Regault Agreed. I always prefer an even match to an instant slaughterfest.

Funny, since a big percentage of the League of Legends forum's threads seem to be about how bad the matchmaking system is since a lot of people feel like they should be teamed up with better players than they are now...

You mean bad people blamming others? Happens on all games.

In my opinion, the matchmaking system is dreadful, particularly in Ranked play. I remember after winning my first ranked match, I got sorted with people who were so supremely better than my team that we didn't get one kill. After two consecutive losses, I was then paired against people that I couldn't believe possessed the ability to turn on a computer.

@Yuglyoshi So you're upset that they didn't nail down your skill level after 3 games? That's a fairly small data set to draw any kind of conclusion about your skill level as compared to other players.

Your first ranked matches gauge you, after that it kinda stabilizes.

I'm tempted to try LoL, since HoN is so unbalanced and stuff.
Can people in LoL pay to reset their stats and by so doing drop lower in the matchmaking and steamroll new players?
Afaik, you can do that in HoN and that's just terrible for me being an average player at best.
All I want is to lose a few games and then get sorted with people in my skill-range.

@(Unverified) You can't reset the stats of your main account, but since LoL is free to play people do create "smurf" accounts. I haven't seen that many of those, but they do exist. Plus, it's generally hard for one player to steamroll the game in LoL, I've heard this is not the case for HoN.

@(Unverified) that sounds ridiculous and no, you can't do that on LoL. Even if you tried to open a smurf account, the matchmaking system will catch you and put you with other people trying to do the same thing (and yes I've tried lol!)
You don't have to lose to get sorted with people (although that does happen) Just play your games normally and you'll get yourself sorted out both in normal and ranked. Normal uses a hidden elo system (same as one in ranked but you can't see the numbers) so just keep a good win/loss ratio and you'll keep getting matched with other good players.

You mean recognised by people who play LoL as garbage.
Players of a competing game thinking the other game is garbage, who would of thought of that.

Games's. Check your style guides. Games' doesn't immediately make sense (ultimately doesn't make sense) and is meant only for advertising where there is an element of presenting an appealing logo.
