We're not sure which is more telling, the fact that just over half of all American kids 8 or younger have played a console game, or the fact that our initial reaction to that statistic was, "Wait, that's all?" Seriously though, 51 percent of anything in any statistical analysis is a drastically massive majority, even when it comes to a combination as natural as kids and video games.
The study, published by the aptly named group Common Sense Media, claims that 51 percent of American children (8 or under) have played a console game at least once. Break that figure down further, and its research shows that 44 percent of kids aged 2 to 4 and 81 percent of children between 5 and 8 have spent time with a controller, with 36 percent of the latter group gaming at least once a week.
There's no denying that we live in a media-rich environment, and that technology is more pervasive now than ever, but we don't think these numbers are anything to worry about. The study claims that most kids are exposed to games before the age of 4, which is certainly true for the Joystiq staff, and we're about as sane and grounded a group of people as you're likely to find.

I started to game when I was two - three years old. My first systems were the PC and Sega Genesis. My father use to let me play DOOM, which was my first PC game. I also got Sonic 1 as my first console game. =) Have been gaming since.
I let my nephew play on my PC when he was two and a half, and I was surprised on how good he was with the Keyboard and Mouse. He has a DS and PS3 now. (He is four now). I'm trying to get my sister to buy him a gaming PC XD.

Hello, I'm ClarkyAC
My Gaming addiction started at around the age of 4, when I was hospitalised for a week or two and put in Quarantine (turns out steroids and chicken pox are a bad mix). So the only method of fun I had was a NES, a TV and a whole load of duck hunt (with flash gun) + SMB.
I am now fully trained with a large variety of weapons and despite my lack of real world knowledge I can navigate a school very well..
Only one the above paragraphs is true.

Nah, I got Suda 51% on a math test once. We found out later that day that Mr. Rigby had a stroke that morning.

My son started playing around in Halo 3 when he was 4 I think. I'd set it up for system link with no other system linked to it so he could learn to move and shoot.
Alas, I didn't get such an early start. We didn't get our Atari 2600 until sometime in the early 80s. I've been gaming ever since and I'm sure he will too :)

It doesn't matter if a child is 4-13 playing Halo. All that matters is you set a firm understanding into the child that it's all fake and that you can't do that in real life. Hell I was playing DN3D at 5.

Yeah, same exact reaction I had. I started playing SNES at 3-4ish. For the number of people who've even played a console game ONCE under 8 is 51% is surprising. Especially since tons of kids have Wiis and I'm sure during birthday parties or days when friends go to other friends houses, the must have played at least Wiii Sports or something.

That is not what the poll says. It says 81 of those in the 5-8 age group have played a console, and 44% of those in ages 2-4 have. The 51% is the average response for all of kids age 2-8. So, the number of kids who have played by age 8 would be much higher than 81.

As long as the kid's parents teach her right from wrong it's ok with me. Resident evil was really what got me into gaming back when I was 4. I'm 16 now and the worst thing I did was get into a fight at a soccer match last year, but that's because the guy I fought was hitting everyone in the nuts.

Who wants to bet that the 51 percent of American kids under 8 had played Call of Duty?

Sorry to be that guy -- but since a majority is by definition >50%, I'm not sure how 51% constitutes a "massive majority".

Makes me glad I moved out and started a family in a beautiful countryside in Europe. Romantic, great neighbours and my wife and I are the only gamers.
They say that games are used as a form of escapism and I can full well believe that. Since moving out here I've felt no need to escape this reality. Except for the real big releases.
My kids have access to a high end computer but spend what little time they choose to spend on it painting with the graphics tablet or making a song in iGarageband.

Really?
Well wanna know what I did,
I traveled through time with a robot, frog, princess, cavewomen, a girl who for some reason always wore a helmet, and someone who I think was a total dick, and destroyed the beast that came from the sky millions of years ago, in a ship that was shaped like a pod, WHEN I WAS SEVEN.

@Undulation Good lord. Games stimulated my creativity in ways that just having a graphics tablet never could. You know what I did right after playing games as a kid? I found a pad of paper and started drawing. Then I started writing things. And so what if a lot of the things I drew were based on the things I had played. The sheer volume of colorful ideas out there was like an electronic Montessori school.
You talk about only caring about the "big releases," but those are the uninteresting, grey, violent games. You are depriving your children of a wonderful, beautiful world of things like The Maw. If you're gonna keep your kids trapped in a cultural ghetto, you are a bad parent.
