Okay, joystick didn´t really like it..... so, following the old rule of "we don´t find it funny" of joystiq this means that the game should be fairly entertaining and has a good amount of fun. it happened with duke, i wouldn´t be surprised if it happens here too......

...jeebus, people. Joystiq gave it an "average" score. That's not end-of-the-world stuff, you know. :p
Hell, it's worth a rental or a $10-20 dollar price drop retail purchase at the very least. And let's face it, reviews are opinion not fact... no one's forcing you to enjoy what Joystiq, IGN, Gamestop, Gamepro, Gamespot, et. al. says. I'm just glad they at least gave aforementioned warning about the godawful SONIC 2006 stuff making a reappearance. I'll make sure to have an open bottle of beer ready for that.

So wait, one main reason the gameplay is weak is because the two Sonics play differently? Madness!

I think the argument to be made there is that by splitting focus neither really comes across as all that engaging or refined. They would have been better served just focusing on one style.

You know why Super Mario Bros. is where it's at and Sonic is where it's at? Super Mario Bros. doesn't feel the need to revisit World 1-1 every damn game.

@(Unverified) I'm a massive Mario fan - but they actually do try to revisit 1-1 in most modern Mario games. Either as a bonus level, a hidden treat, or just an environment nod.

Except for that Mario recycles a giant ton of stuff across each iteration, even if they don't do it as blatantly as with Sonic.

Remember, people were going nuts when Nintendo revealed the Tanooki Suit's appearance in Mario Land 3D. Don't act like Mario doesn't recycle material.

@PointlessPuppies

Of course they do. Any franchise would. That's the point of a franchise.

The difference is that Nintendo recycles their content with reverence, respect, and quality. They also don't do it frequently so as to kill any nostalgic factor it may carry (when is the last time you saw that Tanooki suit in a new game huh?).

Sega, on the other hand, regularly takes that which they hope gamers will remember fondly the most and then proceed to cram it into whichever hideous game they've created for the year. Sonic Team doesn't take a damn break. They just funnel half-assed content down a pipe annually. Sega doesn't take the time to carefully develop anything, they continually misinterpret fan feedback (or simply laugh in the face of it. I can't decide which is more true), they use the same damn references every time (there were more Genesis titles than Sonic 1 and 2) , and they continually insist on adding new characters or clumsy titles with more than one gameplay style.

tl;dr, Nintendo has its shit together. Sega doesn't.

@SteveMcQuark Super Mario Galaxy/2 and Super Mario Sunshine are identical to Super Mario 64?

You might want to actually play them rather than looking at the box art and making assumptions.

And before you say "Well actually, i have played them" You're either lying or fundamentally stupid.

Agreed, this has only cemented the fact that I should never look to Joystiq for reviews.

I'm having some pretty damn good fun, and this review seems damn-dogged determined to nitpick about some petty things.

I thought Gametrailers did a pretty fair review of the game. The gist being better than previous efforts, but still flawed in some aspects.

I agree it's difficult to get a good judge of quality from a single review. That's why God invented statistics! Metacritic has it as a 77%. Or to translate that into words: it's not great, but it's not bad either. Good in places but with some problems...

...Wait! That's pretty much what this review said, too! It must be a conspiracy.

@xxxsam But this review came of as depressing and having some sort of grudge. Sure I saw the reviewer talking about positive things, but they just slammed the game without really going into the nitty gritty and even outlaying the positives that this game does have.

I have the game and do not think it's perfect, I've already died a few times from stupid things, but I still love this game and think it's a lot of fun and in a step in the right direction for Sonic Team, much like they did with Sonic Colors, which I thought was damn good too with flaws of it's own.

@AmpliHelix I know! Frankly I am sorely disappointed that this review didn't point out that this game has one of the best Sonic soundtracks to date. I know the music is essentially reinterpreted, but dammit there are so many nods that are so well placed within the game, it's just fantastic.

Seriously, it's pretty damn good:

Hm, maybe it's just because I enjoy the franchise (within reason), but I loved Generations. Yes, I finished it already, got it at the midnight release, took about six hours to beat, doing hardly any of the extra acts. I loved every moment of every boss fight, with exception of the last one, which made little to no sense, and the one before it, being a bit too long. Other than those two moments, I must say, I enjoyed every minute of this wonderful game. Without being forced to plod through the short 1 minute 'gimmick' levels, like in Colors, Generations feels far more focused on what it whats to do. The cutscenes were mostly well done, if oddly pixelated, the music is a utter joy, and every single lever is wonderfully put together, if a tad too long near the end.

My biggest complaints are that Sega spoiled most of it through trailers, and that the last boss was a total mess. Overall, I feel that if one has even the slightest interest in Sonic should pick this game up.

Sadly, everyone that I know doesn't care about Sonic anymore, and I'm getting no end of crap from my Xbox Live friends for playing it.

That's nice, and if I was a PC gamer I might actually get it. Sadly my PC is ancient and ready for retirement in a landfill, so I'm stuck with console versions.

Rage ran at 60fps as is the best looking game ever made, so there's no reason why a simple side scroller should splutter along at 30fps. It's just poor programming and/or poorly optimised art. Maybe both. Sega should know better, but then again, Sega haven't made anything worth playing since the Dreamcast era.
