The real Devil May Cry canon has been destroyed by Capcom. This reboot is necessary and I will be disappointed if Capcom puts it off to the side. It needs to kick off a new story line and a new canon.

You are one of the very few who think that. The story is pretty solid and still has room to grow, especially after 4. And every time a DMC article is posted you post in it and a bunch of the fans kick your "facts" in the dirt and say otherwise. I don't understand why you continuously talk down the main series of games and always talk up this wild reimagining of the DMC Universe.

@HybridPara My only real problem with the reboot is that he now looks like a meth addict instead of a badass demon slayer.

Yeah! It's necessary to create an Alternate Universe where Dante's a mental patient, and nothing he sees is real.

Wait; what?

That seems to be the main problem fans of the series have as well.
I could have done without the meth addict-look and also the Tameem Antoniades self-insert.
But then Ninja Theory was like "btw we got writers from fanfiction.net to write for us" and told us Dante was Half-Angel, Half-Demon now. It was weird and they were constantly rage-baiting the fans and not giving an f.

But at least it finally registered with Capcom what was going on.

@HybridPara Devil May Cry 2 is s***. No canon story needs a game like that in the series. Devil May Cry 4 was filled with plot holes. The best story in the Devil May Cry series(the Devil May Cry novel) was destroyed and was made non-canon with Devil May Cry 3s story. Any Devil May Cry fan can tell you these things. Capcom has no idea how to make a good story. They have killed the characters by turning Dante into a buffoon.

This reboot is necessary. If you don't see the problems with Devil May Crys current story, then I am sorry. As a proper DMC fan since the day it released, I couldn't be more happy about the reboot. I couldn't have asked for anything else. I don't want the old story back. I want Ninja Theory to develop a new story that has the same idea of the previous games(each game had potential to be a good story) but actually execute the story with proper writing and a proper timeline instead of jumping back and forth in the time line. Start from the beginning and let Dante grow and flourish and give the fans Vergil. Not having him in DMC4 was foolish.

@HybridPara Half-Angel Dante is better for the series. Makes more sense from a story point of view and makes the story not look so stupid. In the old story, Heaven did not exist(even though there was a Heaven and Hell difficulty level) nor did Angels. It made ZERO sense why a hell would exist but a heaven wouldn't. It didn't work. Making Dante half-angel makes sense. It gives Eva more background and makes Sparda an even better man than we had already believed. It makes the universe come around full circle.

@DanteSparda504 I don't play DMC games for the story, so as far as I'm concerned that's really secondary to what's really important. (ie - the gameplay.)

I don't understand how you consider yourself a fan of anything if you're pushing for such massively unwanted and unwarranted change. The novels weren't even that great and didn't really explain a lot of things. Also Vergil died in the first game in the series. It wasn't until the third game that it was really revealed how badass Vergil was. Nero was his stand-in in 4. Devil May Cry 2 was thrust way into the future of the series so fans' fears of the series' direction pretty much disappeared.
The story is actually really pretty solid for the B-movie writing and atmosphere, and it doesn't really contradict itself.
It's not like the game is played for the story anyway, it's just a backdrop for the intense style and action the game throws at you, and also for badass characters to get increasingly more badass, and get into badass conflicts wih other badasses.

@HybridPara If the game isn't played for the story, then why is everyone complaining about the reboot in the first place? It's very obvious the game plays the same. Why even complain? The story is a huge part of the game, and it's why I fell in love with the series in the first place. It's why Devil May Cry 3 is as good as it is, because it was a damn good story and developed Dante and Vergil into two fantastic characters.

The novel was fantastic, it was a great story and one that gave Dante a lot of believability and introduced Vergil(non-Nelo Angelo Vergil) and taught fans that Vergil was just as bad ass as his twin. It was fantastic. It was great, but it doesn't matter anymore now.

Devil May Cry 2 was bad. Nearly everything about it was bad, only good things thankfully transferred over into DMC3 and DMC4(Bloody Palace) but everything else is bad and it doesn't even exist in my mind. Terrible game.

Nero had so much potential and I loved his character, but he caused too many issues with the series. He is a decedent from Sparda....how? Apparently Capcom has decided that he is Vergils son...okay....how about we get some background information on that? What we know of Vergil has not indicated that he would have gotten into anything like that. Why would he be Vergils son over Dantes? None of it makes sense and is just stupid and Capcom dropped the ball when they didn't explain it. Stupid move on their part and one of the many reasons why DMC4 was a disaapointment.

What are you talking about? What about the new dmc is innovative? When did I say I didn't like change? I like good, positive change. Like added gameplay elements, rather than bastardized badasses. 4 was pretty innovative in that the Devil Bringer brought in a slew of new moves to the table, as well as Dante's on-the-fly combat style switching.
I didn't find the gameplay stale at all, for good reason. The DMC series is built on not being stale, and being stylish. That's why you get judged on coolness and style at the end of every level.
I have nothing to do with your perception of the games being stagnant, and me being a fan does not affect the game whatsoever, so get over yourself.

If I were Ninja Theory I'd be worried Capcom wasn't throwing their full confidence behind me. "When your game fails, and your studio is forced to close, we'll continue on with the 'real' DMC." Seems like they're doing this to appease the haters of the DmC reboot and trying to save their own skin, even though the game honestly looks pretty good.

@Oddgirl the irony here is that Capcom TOLD Ninja Theory to boldly reimagine Dante. Ninja Theory doesn't want to piss anyone off. They already know they aren't well-liked by a lot of Devil May Cry fans JUST because they were picked by Capcom to make the new game.

That being said, I don't like the direction this game is taking, and I don't like how Capcom's been operating in general as of late. But after careful reconsideration, I think Ninja Theory are the people that fans of the old Devil May Cry should be blaming last. The problem is with Capcom.

Because it's really, really vital for people to know whether you are rewriting a previously existing story or creating a new story that is a rewritten version of an old one.

There's a difference. It's an important one.

I honestly don't mind this new take. DMC 4 wasn't that great, and Bayonetta pretty much wiped the floor with anything DMC related, so perhaps this might be the shot in the arm the franchise needs.

Or not. Who knows?

I have not given one care about Dante being changed, the story was the last thing I remember from those games.

But giving it to Ninja Theory... THAT makes me cautious. I'm now expecting a game to come out that is completely average, but for whatever reason Ninja Theory thinks it's the tits and gets mad at everyone when they don't buy it.

It's funny how these guys can't seem to figure out just WHAT this "Dante" is.

Is he a younger version of the current Dante?
Is he a complete reboot of the series?
Is he a parallel twin that the Real Dante hopefully finds and beats the tar out of?

Who knows! TN has been throwing "prequel", "reboot", and now this whole parallel crap all about. They need to really put their foot down and settle on one. And honestly, smart thing would be the parallel one.

I remember NT originally saying that this was supposed to be Dante before we met him in DMC1. They have a plan for "if this bombs in sales, we can go back to the original like nothing ever happened." Damage control is quite funny, really.
-
My concern for the game isn't Dante's appearance. That has NEVER been a problem for me (though I may share some certain opinions about it. It's the combat system. I've seen gameplay footage of it, and compared to the gameplay footage of 3 and 4, it looks too wooden. Everything looks more forced than ever and not as smooth as 3 or 4.
-
I am curious though as to why people keep calling those with a not-so-positive opinion "whiny, idiotic fans." Not every change is good change. A game can completely change characters from the original game and still manage to be great (Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry 4, etc.). Not everyone is afraid of change, but if the change is done wrong, it may lead to a poor descent on the series. That's why everyone is concerned about it. They don't want to see Devil May Cry die off slowly yet.

@Admiral White

The combat isn't as smooth or fluid as 3, 4, or other DMC games because its running at half the frames-per-second the actual DMC series runs at. Which is rather unsurprising to be honest.

Ninja Theory has no wish (or clue) to attempt to try and go with the 60FPS DMC normally goes for, since they don't have the "stuff", so to speak, to do it. All of their games have run at 30fps, and I doubt they'll change it. For this they claimed the 30 fps was just to let them do crazy things with the environment.

Which of course is utter bull, seeing as Mr. Kamiya has done plenty of crazy with Bayonetta and the environment there.

It is a bit irritating the the "Dante is skinny and has black hair!" issue has sucked up all the oxygen in most discussions of this game.

My real fear is that Ninja Theory have been handed the reigns of a franchise that lives and dies by its combat. So far, the only thing they've shown any proficiency in (to my eye) is intensely motion captured cutscenes.

Enslaved just left such an awful taste in my mouth. I still don't know what people see in that game... I'm curious if, in this post LA Noire world, Ninja Theory can bamboozle people in to lauding their "storytelling" and "world building" with a lot of facial motion-capture.
