I'm confused. Aren't FF V and VI already available on the PSN ?

Anyway, FF VI is one of the best games ever made. Play it.

@HardBoiled2009 That's not too hard to believe. I would easily play through Final Fantasy VI again before even thinking about Skyrim.

Too bad the PS1 version of FFVI sucks. The load times are really annoying. Not as bad as PS1 Chrono Trigger, but still pretty bad.

I don't remember if FFV had the same problems.

@Roto13 Somebody always has to point this out when one of these games goes up on PSN. Those games had bad loading times because they were reading from a cd. The PSN version won't be doing that, so the loading times shouldn't be as bad as you remember.

@Roto13 Of course, this isn't using a disc, which was presumably the cause of the terrible loads. One hopes anyway.

Somebody always reminds us that the load times were terrible.

Then somebody else tells us that the load times can be improved.

Nobody ever tells us if the load times actually ARE improved.

Little help?

@mikeburnfire They're not. Chrono Trigger is already out and it's no better. FF VI has been out in Japan for ages and it's still bad. People don't get that the load times are hard coded and reading from a hard drive is not going to make them any better.

I post this every time it comes up because it's important that people know before they buy. If I bought one of the best SNES RPGs on PSN and it turned out it wasn't actually fun to play because of a technical issue, I'd be pissed.

@Hoops
People have reported that the PSN release of the PSOne Chrono Trigger still has bad loading time issues. Fact of the matter is Tose did a crap job of porting Square's Super NES titles to PSOne. Disc or no disc, there shouldn't have been so much loading for a ported Super NES game.

If these PSOne releases are your only means to buy these games, then by all means, do so. They're still classics. However, if you have the ability to play a different release (DS, GBA, or even Virtual Console), then do that instead.

This may be a naive question, but why would load times of a PS1 title still be an issue on a PS3 digital download? I thought most of the the load time issues of the PS1 generation were from the slow data seek times of the CD Rom drives?

Hate to burst your bubble, but the load times were coded into the game, and seeing these are simple PS1 emulators, those load times are still going to be there.

Just from experience, the load times on the PSN version of Chrono Trigger were just as bad as I remember.

@Roto13 It's not that the load times are hard coded, it's because the system is emulating a PS1, disc read speeds and all.

So despite being played from a hard drive, these PS1 games will still have the same loading time as they would on a PS1 system.

@KentBrockman No, a lot of other PS1 games can load faster on a PSP or PS3. These don't, for a very specific reason. They don't load any faster when played on an emulator either. These games don't say "Pause until finished loading", they say "Pause for X amount of time."

I have a fat original 60GB launch PS3, and yes Chrono Cross does freeze, especially in certain battles. If you claim it hasn't froze for you, then you probably took a different plot path that skips some of the freezable battles.

Much like Xenogears (whose PS1 disc also froze, on disc 2) and Legend of Mana, the PSN release also fixes the bugs which caused the game to freeze.

The problem was that Squaresoft figured out some undocumented tricks to pump more out of PS1 games graphics than Sony let on, and Chrono Cross was the most advanced title in this capacity, and so their games usually need to be tweaked to work right on the PS3 emulator.

@EIranzer Well, here's a question that I hope you'll have an answer to. I just started replaying Chrono Cross on my PS3 (Slim, if it matters; my launch Fat died around this time last year, sadly) just the other day. Currently about to storm Viper Manor. The last time I tried playing Chrono Cross on my PS3 Fat, it froze at the

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT YOU HAVE WARNED AND STUFF

boss battle on the ghost ship (the giant parrotdactyl thingy). Now that Chrono Cross is coming out via PSN, do I still have anything to worry about? I mean, if it works flawlessly on the PSN version, the disc version should work as well, right? Hopefully?

Thanks in advance for any insight you may have.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I started playing it again a couple days ago. I almost forgot how much content this game has. And the vast amount of content doesn't overwhelm you either, seeing as most of it is optional. The battle system is kind of similar to Final Fantasy XIII's. And the fact that there are no random encounters is pretty impressive for a PS1 game. It was ahead of it's time.
