You already know that Alan Wake's Night Springs is headed towards its big debut at the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards, and you already know that it'll arrive on Xbox Live Arcade. What you didn't know is that Mr. Wake has got himself a whole new "Bob Vila meets Twin Peaks" look going on, as revealed by Game Informer's exclusive first screenshot. Also, hey, he's got a gas-powered pneumatic nail gun! The darkness isn't gonna like nails in its stupid face, is it? Yeah!
It also appears that Wake's got quite a bit of walking ahead of him, as a nearby highway sign puts 15 miles between him and the titular town of Night Springs. Hopefully the Desert Shore Motel can help sate him for that journey with a damn fine cup of coffee and some delicious cherry pie.

I like this look, it's only a hat and an axe short of Lumberjack Wake.
Lumberjack Wake, "Screw your revolvers, I have an axe!"

This is a smart move for a game company. They had a critically acclaimed game, that didn't sell well. I think I am right on that anyway. So, going with a digital distribution of a smaller game at a (hopefully) cheaper price point ($20-30) seems like the right move. Then DLC and micro transact it to reach profitability rather than ask for $60 up front.

@AceManUSC I don't think it did, no. That game was excellent but what would stand a chance against Red Dead?

@AceManUSC I'd rather this be like a "filler" between Alan Wake 1 & 2.
Because 2GB (The limit on XBLA as far as I know) is not enough to satisfy my Alan Wake hunger

According to Remedy on the Alan Wake forums, Alan Wake would have fitted into 2GB without cut-scene cinematics, so technically, 2GB IS enough to satisfy your Alan Wake hunger ;)

I wish Alan Wake would come to the PS3. I loved that first trailer that came out.

@Miadaskate And he was downvoted because? When i first saw Alan Wake, I wished it would come out for the PS3 also. It looked fun, and unique at that. I ended up buying a 360 so I bought up Alan Wake and I was so glad I did. For me, it was so much fun. But what about people who can't afford both consoles?...
I guess opinions on the internet still don't mean anything?...

I'm wondering if this is going to be a completely episodic sequel. Maybe Remedy is aiming to release Night Springs as separate episodes over a period of time. They could release six "episodes" for $10 a piece and in the end it's a full game.

Well, at least it looks like the same ol' Alan Wake.
They've said, "Don't judge before seeing it; just because it's on XBLA doesn't make it any less of a game." But how could it not? They obviously can't put an entire 8 hours' worth of content into 15-20 bucks, nor into the 2GB limit for XBLA games. In this sense, I'm worried for both Night Springs and I Am Alive - both started (or were thought to be) ambitious third-person action-adventure games that have been both "downgraded" to download status. Maybe our preconceived notions of what a downloadable title is are skewed and will be corrected by these two, but I can't imagine that they will be anywhere the kind of scale a $60 retail title would have been. Maybe they'll magically pull a Shadow-Complex-esque scenario out of their black top hats, but that doesn't seem likely. I'm still definitely on board with both, but I'm readying myself for disappointment. Hey, if they're awesome, I'll be that much more psyched.

Sam & Max: Save the World would be to differ.
Even if it didn't fit the 2GB XBLA limit, the issue can easily be resolved by making it a Games on Demand title (i.e. Crysis) for 1200/1600pts.

Now seems like a good time to tell you that the original Alan Wake's game data only took up 2.41 GB of space on the disc (another 3.74 GB was used for video sequences - source: Digital Foundry). So yes, "obviously" it would be possible :)

@ch3burashka It's an xbox exclusive title, do you really think they wouldn't bend or break the rules?

I hope this game does exceptionally well as a downloadable title so when it does, Microsoft and Remedy can justify a full blown retail release for Alan Wake 2 :)

Why are they puttin this on XBLA an not GoD?
I could not care less if it's digital only, that doesn't bother me at all.. But I do want a full game and not a game restricted by 2GBs and 200GS..
Come on MS, it's not our damn faults you releases the first one the same time as rockstars Red Dead Resemption..

@Tippin True, I probably would have bought Alan Wake if it was released at least a week earlier then Red Dead Redemption. Nice going MS.

That nail gun Wake's holding is a good sign, because it probably means there will be more variety in the way he kills the enemies. The original game is awesome, but I'll admit that killing most enemies the same way all the time got a bit redundant.

With a marketing campaign (Alan Wake didn't have one...) and a little more polish, I think Alan Wake could be a huge IP in Microsoft's arsenal. Sadly, going the download route loses you a bit of that hype generated by big budget retail releases. So where does Microsoft go after Gears, Halo, Fable, and Forza? They're all wearing pretty thing. Great franchises, but they certainly need new stuff if they wish to compete in the future

Is A. Wake trying to pull off the N. Drake half-tuck, with hipster belt buckle?
Maybe he heard about Joystiq's contest??
I would love to play a game as Alan Wake playing Uncharted.

I'd been fearing the worst for this and was really disappointed with everything I've heard thus far, but I'm starting to turn the corner. I really wanted a full-on serious sequel. One piece of DLC was great, the other sucked. Alan Wake might be one of my fave games of all time so I think I've just been overly negative. They did such a great job with the first so I think I owe 'em some due credit. I'm sure I'll buy it. Those short prequel bits they did with live actors were so awesome, I hope they do more of those, too.

I just hope that the content is as big as the first game (enough in my book) and that the graphics are on par or better than they were before. I think Alan wake's graphics were one of the best on the 360.
