We all need some extra cash in the holiday season, and if you're looking for someone to hit up for a loan, we'd recommend your rich Uncle Activision. The company just announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 6.5 million units in the US and UK on its first day, good for $400 million. To put it in perspective, that's the biggest day-one for any entertainment product ever in history. This tops previous records set by Modern Warfare 2: a paltry $310 million and Black Ops, estimated to have made $360 million in its first day.
Of course, analysts had pre-orders pegged at roughly 9 million, so you know what that means to Battlefield 3 fans. Yes, Modern Warfare 3 is a huge disappointment falling well short of expectations. See, internet? Everybody wins!

Haha it the same game just added spec ops new guns, killstreaks, changed how you earn kill streaks, added leveling for your guns. Wait this is starting to sound alot different. This is suppose to be like the first one for the campaign it's th sequel. If its exactly te same than all shooters are the same u just get a gun and shoot people. When are they gonna learn that some people play shooter not to do that.

That 3.8m was "sell-in" which is code for "shipped" which is why we didn't cover it at Joystiq.

Everybody needs to remember that SALES DOES NOT EQUAL QUALITY. It's measures the success of marketing. If you think I'm BS, then you must agree that Britney Spears, Soulja Boy, Transformers(Michael Bay), Angry Birds are the best of all time. They're not and the only reason why they sell so much is because of hype. Casuals feel like they have to keep up with the Kardashians.
Shadow of Colossus, Okami, God Hand, and Rune Factory are regarded by as AAA games by the hardcore gamers but because their marketing team is full of monkeys they don't get the sales they deserve.

I don't think hype is the only reason that those things sell so much.
I think it's the simplicity and ease of those things. They are very straight forward, easy to get into things that don't require much brain power, which is what the masses generally want.
I'm not even criticizing the masses - after a long day at work, I like me some Britney Spears and Angry Birds.

@counterko I feel like I need to say 'duh'. Activision could give a shit if the game is any good - they've engineered a response to "NEW COD OMGOMGOMG" and from there it's gravy. It would surprise me that this one outsold the last one after hearing industry folks saying it's basically more of the same and getting stale, but the 6 million people who bought it don't care/listen to that. They just want new shiny CoD, regardless of how different it might actually be from the game they were playing the day before.

Then why do you cover console "sales" when that data is always representative of shipped to retail?
If a game ships to a retailer isn't that essentially a sale for the publisher?

I played and beat MW3.... and my god I was disappointed with it.... I felt like I was playing call of duty 4 back in 07.
other than special ops... call of duty modern warfare 3 sucks. how it makes this much money confuses the shit out of me.... you want to play a real first person shooter that try's to raise the bar.... pick up halo reach or battlefield 3.
call of duty = SAME OLD SHIT.

Good for them.
MW3 is a super polished, expertly crafted, insanely addictive and very fun game that deserves these sales numbers.

No sales numbers just show the hype, the game it self is disappointing. When Sledge signed up on this I knewthe end result would be bad. I still feel IW did it right with MW and MW2 and once the had the "fall out" and fired people it went downhill. At least we have Trey Arch to make a good COD game,

I bought MW3 myself, but sales numbers mean nothing regarding quality. Look at Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Twilight, and others. MW3 is fine, but it's more of the same, which I want on occasion.

Is it me, or do all the maps on MW3 multiplayer seem the same? Fun game, but every map is either medium or small-sized.

I opted to rent this year's game (loved MW2, but got bored) and it seemed all of the maps are kinda small. I don't know if it's because I'm not familiar with them or what, but I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed.

@babywolfman ... You're definitely not alone. I've been a lot since Tuesday, so I'm pretty familiar with the maps. Another thing I noticed, was that snipers have been given a lot more power. Quick-scoping is requires a lot less accuracy too...and this is coming from a terrible sniper (myself). Other than these minor annoyances, I definitely enjoy the game.

@GreenLight yeah, I'm happy with mw3 overall, but the maps are probably the weakest part. They're okay, but they don't seem as interesting so far as mw2's. Actually they seem to play better in hardcore mode than standard, because it's slower paced and you have to use the environment to your advantage. in standard, it moves so fast it feels like you're just chasing each other in circles.

Good for them, but after beating the single player (only 4.5 hours hours long) I can't help buy think this might be the laziest CoD yet...I bet this was the last COD game to sport the "modern warfare moniker.

They don't reinvent the engine every year because it doesn't make sense. once they build the assets they may as well use them for a while and churn out new maps, locations, stories, and weapons.... while they make billions and employ hundreds if not thousands of people.

@sammo21 I put MW2 back in a few months back just to keep the look and feel of the game somewhat fresh in my head (I jumped ship last Dec. to predominantly Halo:Reach).
Fast forward to yesterday, and playing the game made me feel more nostalgic rather than actually playing a new entry in the CoD series. It can not be stressed enough that the engine hasn't been altered at all. Graphically, it looks the same as MW2. Gameplay, still feels like CoD, but when you are in your third iteration (or fifth if you count WaW and BO), it needs to be shaken up a bit. And the maps were terrible. Very little variety in terms of layout.

in all fairness when you compare content and reused engines, MW 1,2 and 3 should have been one 15 hour game developed over a longer cycle. Instead, they sell a full priced episode because they know people will buy it blindly.

As much as I enjoyed MW1-MW3, I would not want to play them back to back to back in one 15-20 hour long game.
CoD works enough because at the end, after all the explosions and all the death, you get a break. There is a cliffhanger, you wait a couple of years and you continue from that point on. It's why after a Michael Bay movie all I want to do is relax. It's intense.
It may not be the best game series of all time, but it is one of the most explosive/engaging if you are willing to turn off logic and reason for a short period of time.

@Lucky48 Is it NOT art? I mean, you could argue it's not GOOD art, I suppose, but pretty much every game is art in some sense.
Actually I'd compare the MW games directly to the Rambo movies. In each series, the original had lots of action, but also had intelligence, something to say, some humanity, some tragedy, some subtlety, and a serious look at the cost of war. The sequels turned into cartoon caricatures, ramping up the action to ridiculous levels while painting the characters and their motivations in such broad strokes that they seemed like moving action figures. The sequels are still good, in their own ways, but they've lost something big from the excellent originals.
Now, the most recent Rambo movie moved back towards the style of the original, and hopefully MW will do the same.

@Copybass Ah jeez zombies @NPTran23 Terrible example. Which game do you think cost more to make, MW3 or Rayman? Which game offers gamers the most hours of gameplay? MW3 can justify the $60. It was expensive as hell to make, and most people who get it will put hours into the multiplayer. That experience is worth $60. Rayman on the otherhand cost Ubisoft far, far less to make, doesn't offer the gamer nearly as many hours of gameplay, and they think you should pay the same price. It's a quality game, I get that, but the days of spending $60 on a game just because all games cost $60 are over for me. You want $60, you better deliver a hell of an experience for that money. Give me value. Not some single player experience that I'll be done with in a weekend. I will definately buy Rayman, but I'll wait a few months and get it for $30.
