The code is so complete that Notch told reviewers to go ahead and treat it as review code, claiming that any changes made before the title's official Friday launch would be minimal. We're not positive, but we're pretty sure two years is the most lead time any games journalist has ever had for a review.
Minecraft has gone gold

We knew it was coming, but to finally hear that Minecraft has completed its year-long beta-testing phase and successfully transformed itself into a retail product brings a tiny cubed tear to our square, pixelated eyes. If you're already a crafty crafter, Minecraft Version 1.0's release client can be obtained here (warning: direct link).

Mark this 14 of November, 2011 as the first time Joystiq puts a direct link.

Unless of course, those two years were spent erecting Obsidian Phallic pillars erupting Lava that reach up and into the very clouds themselves.

Is there even a point to reviewing Minecraft?

This means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things, besides the fact that it can now be reviewed. Minecraft, it seems, can never really be complete; Notch is still going to *slowly* release updates for the game without making you pay for more (which is awesome), but I think Minecraft's biggest asset right now is it's mod community.

A game going gold does not mean it's complete. It should mean that the game is as bug free as possible and in a state worthy of charging people, but this is minecraft.

For some reason, it hit me as funny that the download was so tiny. Like hearing the Zelda treasure chest music and then pulling out a penny.
Or on the other hand, GREASED LIGHTNING. HOO YEA.

So then I suppose the game should probably be rated 5/10 across the board since half the features are hilariously incomplete?
"Going gold" is meaningless when the game is still far, far from done. But I'm sure it's easier to make a public statement and treating that as a milestone rather than actually update the game and treat THAT as a milestone.

Notch doesn't have a damn clue how to run a software company. This isn't really debatable. He Homer Simpson'ed his way into notoriety by breaking his authentication / store / homepage server and deciding not to fix it for a weekend while people played the game. His success is in spite of himself.
He doesn't know how filesystems work. Look at the laughable original level storage design. It's perfectly fine for a quick prototype, but not for real development. Fortunately, someone in the community built a mod that he copied from that wasn't quite as badly designed. (Or, rather, was a better implementation of his bad design)
He doesn't use sensible data structures. He's building a voxel 3D world, but using a 2D anisotropic data structure. As a result, if you want to change the height of the world, the RAM usage scales *LINEARLY* with max height, instead of with actual USED space. That is *TERRIBLE* design.
That's not even getting into the "game design" issues. I'll just say one thing there, "Endermen".
As for: "because you "know" how software development works and didn't manage to work on a project as successful as Minecraft?"
I've worked on several projects that have had more users *daily* than Minecraft has had *total*. So, no, not really. I'm just annoyed that people with no real understanding of software design & implementation keep leaping to defend a guy who's pretty good at building quick prototypes of interesting ideas, but does not have the experience or education to *lead* a complex project like this, let alone run the company at the same time.
Minecraft is fun.
Minecraft is *not* well designed, or implemented.
These are two *completely separate* things. We don't have to dislike the game to recognize that Notch is in fantastically over his head. It's not hate, it's not anger. It's frustration at seeing rather obvious design decisions flubbed due to inexperience and, frankly, hubris.

And yet even with that 2 year lead in, there's still no review up. How on earth could I ever know how you feel about Minecraft until I see how many stars you give it?

You don't understand gaming terminology, do you?
"Going gold" means the final code of the game has been done, and the gold master has been pressed, and is being sent off for replication. For a digital release game such as this, it just means the game is finished, and ready to be released as a final, retail version.

I may get flamed for this, but I think Metacritic does the biggest disservice to video games. I understand the significance of placing a number value on a game. However, the number is being taken completely out of context. Not to mention the fact that every site is going to have variances on how they developed that score.
Not attacking you. Just my personal opinion.

I say this a lot, but I'll wait until Minecraft's recipes will be hidden in dungeons. I absolutely HATE having to go online too look for what I can craft an how. That's not an immersive experience, and it feels like I'm reading walkthroughs.
