Hmm....

I didn't even know about this. Since I am a console collector, I owe it to myself to get this, even if it *really* ain't a traditional console. ;P

Can't wait to see the shit storm when OnLive inevitably goes bust. "Oh no! My 'purachase' has vanished into thin air!"

@Dick Socrates On live might or might not go bust. But gaming on the cloud is the future. You're deluding yourself if you think it's not going to happen.

In 10 years, the only people running games locally on anything will be die hard PC gamers like myself.

Everyone else will be gaming on smart TV's hooked up to the grid, or on mobile platforms like tablets and phones.

Pretty much!

There was a dial-up service for the Atari 2600 I have; basically a modem you plug into the cart-port that dials up their servers. Had some popular games, but their own, too.

Well, of course the service ain't around any more! ;P

lotr and free console- $34.99
amnesia- 40 cents
metro 2033- $5
splinter cell- $5
saints row 3- $17.50
AC:R- $34.99
playpack- $9.99
microconsole- Free

that's a total of $72

I sold the first micro console for $75, and I'm going to sell the second micro console to a friend for $75

I really don't care if those games disappear because I will have gotten paid $78 to play all of those games...I lie I had to spend $20 for shipping on the two consoles. so I only got paid $58.

my bad I forgot to add in the price of lotr into the total. but my point still stands. I made money off of these deals. and I have three brand new games, and three that did not make it to the PS3

If all you want for the future is a Mushy "Kinect Like" experience, then you can have it.

The physics of Internet data transmission will have to fundamentally change for time sensitive interaction in the cloud to be the future.

Unless that future is completely without games like 'Splosion Man or Super Mario remote viewing services like Onlive ain't happening.

Now a streaming download that executed code locally? THAT could happen, but that isn't what OnLive is.

My money is that they are bought up by another company

Probably an ISP, ironically the same ISP that will throttle and cap their service just to drive the final nail into OnLives coffin.

But its ok because for an extra $20 monthly fee they will provide exactly what you were getting before .....

Or Forza, or GT

Or any game that requires any amount of precision in their controls.

Looking at the comments above me. Am I the only one NOT having problems with lag? And the graphics aren't as horrible as you make them out to be, especially playing on the big screen at the "recommended distance" from the TV. Yeah, not perfect, but far from "shockingly bad", imho. It's streaming real time from the future, what do you expect?

works great for me too. the deals on there are just way too good to pass up. I know the deals are not going to last forever but hell, I may as well take advantage of it while I can.

If you haven't done it already they've had a code going lately "tekzilla50" that takes 50% of any game

I don't have problems with lag and I think the graphics are higher resolution but the textures do get blurred a bit from the video compression. I sort of like OnLive and welcome the future of cloud gaming.

I'm not sold, though. The only reason I haven't bought into this service yet is because they fail to have any games I can't get elsewhere. They need to pull their head out of their ass and get all the PC exclusives with insane tech requirements on there or there's really no benefit to using the service for most gamers.

I would have liked to play Crysis way back in the day, or The Witcher 2 last year, but could not as I am a Mac user. OnLive just isn't filling any holes in the market.

I have to agree with you here. I have a few games on it. I got my free Microconsole for pre-ordering Arkham City. The lag is a tad noticeable and annoying when trying to play with a mouse, but switching to my wired Xbox 360 controller on my PC, or playing with the Microconsole controller really makes the lag unnoticable for me.

Yes, the graphics aren't going to blow you away. I got Borderlands on it for about $2.50 to compare it to my Steam copy and it looks worse when playing it full screen on my PC monitor. However, playing with the Microconsole on a HDTV really makes it look much better for some reason.

Here's a tip for anyone interested in this special right now. Get a subscription to the Playpack bundle for $10. Then get 33% off your $50 game ($33.50). It saves you more than the $10 cost you, plus you can snag a few other games for 33% off for the next month. Just remember to cancel the Playpack bundle subscription before the next month if you aren't using it.

In terms of graphics/performance it's fairly close to current gen consoles.

The latency however is going to depend on your distance from their closes data center. If you're nearby you're probably good. If not...

I'd give ti a shot on Pc first, to see if the performance is something you can live with.

I mean, when ti works, it works just fine.

My little cousins didn't believe when I told them I didn't own a console, and no, the game wasn't running on my gaming rig, either.

they were perfectly satisfied with the experience.

If this was a deal included in a retail copy I might try it out, but why pay $50 for something that might be complete balls streamed to your TV, when you could just buy the disc version and know how it will look and play?

@arkweld

well the way it works is you can run a 30 minute trial of most games on OnLive. so if those work on your computer it'll probably work on the microconsole.

If it doesn't work, then you know to stay away.

personally I think it's crazy to not try it. if it works on your computer you can play it on there and then sell the console to make a profit. and then you get to play through the new Assassins creed. and use the money you made to buy another game somewhere else

They need to get it together and get a proper iPad / Android client working. That could well be the "killer app" for these things. Console-ish graphics -on a skinny little tablet. And, since its scaled to a smaller/lower-res screen, it's really quite nice looking (so the early previews have said).

Inb4 lag criticism- oh, too late. I'm doing it wrong. I use it every now and then when I move in between places I stay at and I really enjoy it. I guess the minimum requirements is to refrain from being a graphics whore. Much easier to transport than a console or a 10 pound laptop.

I would much rather pay a base price monthly for the service then pay for each game individually. Hard to fork over the money for something you really don't own physically, it's not even on a local harddrive.

I think connection speed is the real thing keeping Onlive from becoming big right now. I mean has anyone been able to play these games on full blast with no lag right now through Onlive?

It's a cool idea, way ahead of it's time though.

It isn't speed, it is latency.

and that is very unlikely to change any time soon.

I just wanted to say I got this deal and it is amazing if you have low latency. I had no lag and in fact the controller seemed a little faster for me than playing on xbox live. The picture is beautiful, the spectating is by far way cooler than anything other consoles can do, and it is quicker than my 360. Whoever has problems just needs to get better internet.
