I second alzeer's post. I want it in 2D. Marvel VS. Capcom 3 could have been so much better if it was in 2D, so that everyone from MvC2 could have returned AND they could have added all those new characters. Sprites use less disc space than 3D models.

CvS2 has a great roster and I want everyone back, plus more.

@Maxx the Slash It's not as simple as reusing the same 15 year-old sprites... a new game would demand new HD sprites to actually sell, and drawing sprites frame-by-frame is a lot more work than doing a 3D model nowadays. Besides... a fully animated 2D HD character would indeed use much more space than a regular polygonal model. So yeah, I don't agree on the 2D route, but I definetely do on Capcom vs SNK 3 :D

As long as the character roster is more than just Street Fighter vs KOF, this time.

I don't think my nearest arcade is going to get this game, which is a darn shame as that seems to be the only way that I'll be able to play it.

Then again, 10 or so years of playing, and consistently being poor at, Saturn KOF 97, I still approach the series in a button-masher fashion. Not really sure what I'm doing; lost so much money on KOF 12.

Must say that KOF 12/13 are certainly the most pretty of games.

London. There used to be THREE significant arcades. Sadly it's been whittled down to two.

Trocadero got shut down in the summer. So, so sad; so many good memories.

The last two arcades standing are Namco and Casino (Goodge Street).

I remember, when I lived in Mexico we had lots of KOF 97-99 where I lived, only had to pay a peso to play. Guess I'm going to add this to my next week's expenses.

King of Fighters has always had great music. The reviewer's surprise at the quality of KOF 13's awesome soundtrack makes me question whether he was qualified to write this review.

I also didn't like the indie rock comparison; KOF fans are about as far from the type of people who ironically like uncool things as you can get. KOF fans just sincerely love arcade-quality 2D games; we don't take pride in playing something that isn't mainstream, we're baffled why all the other game companies get away with going the cheap route using polygons or vectors while only a handful of companies like SNK are still willing to spend the money it takes to make real 2D art like everybody used to.

Yeah this. I've always enjoyed KoF games ever since I was little. I've always tried my hardest to get more and more people to like KoF but most people were sad it was nothing like CVS2. Hell even for KoF13 I know people who were playing CVS2 to get in shape for KoF13.

@Buster Rod G I agree with what you say about the music... in fact, I think music from KOF 98 (that gathers the best from the orochi saga) is much better than XIII's... since there's not only team music, but character-specific music as well :)

Not much agreed on the 2D thing tho, KOF could use some real graphical evolution. KOF was a real beauty in the 90s, and it needs to be one today to really compete with the big names. Having some more sales wouldn't hurt the series, specially considering SNKP's current financial situation.

Did you honestly just say this game seem archaic for being pure 2D? This is practically the reason why everyone in the fighting game community is excited about this game. Its NOT 3D. And well done 2D will have aesthetics that 3D will never be able to capture no matter how well done it was. This game is art.

And are you seriously complaining about the slightly-above-average learning curve for this game? Sorry if not all games are intentionally dumbed down like SF4 and MVC3 for all to pick up with no effort. But as a fighting game, its all about the practice. At least when you play against people and you lose in this game, it'd be due only to your own shortcoming, not randomness like MvC3.

I disagree with the reviewer that the game in 2D is a negative thing. It's all about the game's own identity and style. I don't think they're out of touch with what's around them just because they're not making a 2D fighter with "3D graphics". I don't think that's the way forward too - it worked for Capcom games but it might not necessarily work for others.

I was actually a bit surprised that the game was given 4 stars in this review, from what I was reading, it sounded like he was going to give the game a 3 star rating! haha

I just want to point out that "This review is based on a retail copy of the 360 version of King of Fighters XIII provided by Atlas and SNK Playmore."
The company's name is 'Atlus' not 'Atlas'.
Other than that, great review.

"Like a hipster's favorite band, KOFXIII's greatest asset is just how uncool it is."

As much as I hate that analogy, I'd say there is some truth to it. I hate the fact, but 2D fighters have phased out in mainstream over here. All the big streams are 3D one (not that there isn't plenty of streams ford 2D fighters as well but there is no where near as much hype.) I'm hoping KoFXIII gets as big as SSF4:AE and UMvC3, but I won't hold my breath either, Either way, it's a damn solid game and I'm glad to have it in my library.
