In the latest Iwata Asks column, not yet translated into English by Nintendo, the CEO discusses development of December's high-profile 3DS release, Mario Kart 7, with not only recent series developer Nintendo EAD but also Austin-based Retro Studios.
"But Retro Studios only worked on the Donkey Kong Country Returns level," you whimper. While that was true as of last E3, Hideki Konno, Manager and Producer at EAD Software Development Group No.1, tells Iwata that since several production designers were working to get Nintendogs + Cats ready for the 3DS launch, as well as other Nintendo projects, there was "an act of emergency" to get Mario Kart 7 finished by the end of the year.
Retro was brought in to help on some courses, notably the aforementioned DKC-themed level, and to work on the game's 16 classic courses, while EAD ostensibly worked on the 16 new tracks. With the 3DS still recovering from a rough launch, plagued by pricing concerns and a paucity of premium software, we'd say it was a smart move to ensure Mario Kart 7 would find its way onto shelves this year.

Imagine if Nintendo hadn't jumped the gun and waited until the holiday season to launch this thing? Having Zelda and a new Mario/Mario Kart at launch (or even one as a pack-in) would have really helped this thing sell.

They wouldn't have put the second stick on it. They design their consoles for Nintendo games, and Nintendo games don't use the second stick. The only reason the circle pad pro even exists is because third parties pressured nintendo for it. They don't have the foresight to ask what the third parties need BEFORE making their console.

@JMC611 i guess eh missed the whole Dpad issue when Capcom was giving out a cover to make it eaiser to play Street Fighter Alpha 3/Darkstalkers.
or the whole psp Go thing, but anyways.
Nintendo only does redesigns and no one else ever does it.
If only a 2nd analog stick was the biggest problem i had with ever other electronic device i own that can play games i'd be happy as a pig in poop

Am I wrong, or are there several different versions of the PSP, besides the GO.

With Retro involved, there is a risk that the classic courses will shadow the new courses. Would have liked to see Retro's take on some new courses.
Should have split the workload to 50% of old and 50% of new to Retro instead.

I can't imagine how difficult it must have been.
Considering Mario Kart has been nearly the same game for the last 100 iterations.

@houstons85 Because Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart Super Circuit, and Mario Kart DS are exact ports of Super Mario Kart... yah

I've seen the new courses in action and they're not too impressive. In the style of MK Wii, in fact. Something was really off with that one. They should have given Retro full development of the game.

I loved MK Wii, but yeah, Double Dash doesn't get the credit it deserves. I know a guy who swears 64 had the best versions of every major nintendo game but when we play mario kart, it's always double dash. The horrible balance and unfair online kinda ruined Wii for me. Hope 7 doesn't have the same issues.
