Valve gifts Notch his own head, on other people's heads
39
It's official -- Notch, the creator of Minecraft and all-around Swedish dude, has made it big. In his most recent blog post, Notch describes his intense love for Valve's TF2 and then shows off the custom-made fancy hat that Valve made for his characters exclusively, called Top Notch. It's basically a cardboard box with square-ish pasties resembling Notch's Minecraft avatar worn over a character's entire head, and it's the sweetest gift we've seen in a long time.
Notch agrees, writing, "Hooooly cow. Thank you, Valve. You wouldn't believe the amount of medic I get now. Also, spies."

Is this the guy who's indie game got famous by pure luck and who has since been mooching off the ideas of mod makers?

Testing the waters to see just how quickly a post can get downvoted, it has all the right elements.
1) A bit of truth
2) A bit of douchebaggery
3) A commenter who's name can result in many excellent comebacks

People on Joystiq generally ride Notch for all he's worth, it's rare to see a post that bashes him get upvoted, even if it DOES tell the truth about his character.
This was very obvious when he spouted the bullshit about Scrolls being Pay To Free To Play.

I am confuse? Are you talking about Valve?
Because they started out as an Indie, They had a lucky break that their first major game that comes to mind was a resounding success. They bought up the TF2 IP and for years it sat on steams back burner sponging off mod makers.... hell to this day the best things that get added to TF2 have largely been around for years in the form of commonly used mods.
I mean they recently (within the year) added a map vote feature .... ZOMG hey guys dey stolez teh RTV!!11!1oneone!1111!one!!111!!!

Haha, wow. That's pretty cool of Valve to make Notch a custom hat.
I wonder if we'll see other, Minecraft-themed items available to the general public...

Ever since post stopped disappearing with the downvotes, spambots have gotten worse. Do something, Joystiq!
(And btw, the mobile version of Joystiq still makes downvoted posts white, just like it should!)

I dunno its slightly less annoying at least for me, when previously I saw a downvoted post I needed to highlight it or squint to see what they had said.
Tho I am none too fond of Spambots.....
Maybe a new feature so you can report a post as a spambot that would preform the old school vanishing downvote effect? Along with temp/perm account banns if said feature is abused on obvious non SB posts?

Minecraft is a shitty overpriced piece of indy garbage that Notch hasn't done anything with for in a long time, I hate the game and find it sorely lacking in literally every way, and if they were to give a hat to someone it should at least be Jeb who's actually worked on the game unlike Notch and his 5 million vacations.
Seriously, I cannot wait for people to get over this hipster garbage, and I'll even go ahead and post the truth review.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ap87xnjOh8E
I seriously think if you disagree with anything said in the video you /have/ to be a deluded fanboy, I can't wait for responses shouting "ITS NOT FINISHED HE'S WRONG!!!" Notch is charging 30 dollars and claiming it's finished and worthy of being a full release. You're wrong, please stop being dumb.
Also annoyed that Valve is stroking his ego like this, making a single style breaking hat that. Distaste aside don't make hats for a single person, I have to download it, I have no hopes of getting it, literally no one else can get it, it's not fair at all to people and I'd rather not have it waste what little space it does on my harddrive.

@Sift We do not take exception to your view of Minecraft. It's the way you present it. Starting a comment by calling something "a shitty overpriced piece of indy garbage" is far from the best way to present your opinion.
Despite it's flaws, there must be something right with Minecraft considering the amount of time I and many others have spent with it.

@Hedgeson I'm giving my opinion on it. I'm not openly insulting Notch or anyone, and even giving Jeb praise saying he deserves the reward if anyone does as Notch has stopped working on the game almost entirely leaving it in his hands.
Overpriced: It's currently 30 dollars, It's far to much to ask for something with bad graphics (no I don't think it's "stylish" or anything) with no remarkable AI, basic combat, and such little things to actually do. The video I posted covers this but I find it not worth the money.
Indy Garbage: It's a indy game, it's not made by a big company with a lot of weight behind it and it only got popular by word of mouth. It's a bad game in my eyes and with as many bugs, and level of quality in the finished product I've deemed it as garbage. It's a waste in my eyes as while it was in the alpha it had potential, it never grasped it, and never went anywhere and the finished project hasn't changed much in all with a bevvy of useless features that are there to make the game feel a lot more interesting then it actually is with lifeless NPC's that are impossible to do anything with and dungeons with literally nothing special in them that items you find around a starting area couldn't already do. You may say "oh cool a dungeon" but it might as well just be another terrain type.
It's Shit: The game lacks a lot of promised features, that DLC or not, is not in the final retail release of the game, it's combat is hamfisted and is just holding a button to win with no actual animations from any of the enemies besides a typical walk animation, there's no AI for anything at all in the game, there's no content, and after you're done making your giant pokemon sprite or whatever there's not much too do in it. It's a empty uninteresting world where nothing of importance happens and there's just not a lot to do. You can find the rarest material within 10 minutes or less (my friends made a video of him doing so) and the game has no way of rewarding the player for doing anything. It's a bad game and in my eyes a pile of shit.
Sorry you don't like my word choice, but it's not me just saying it to say it. In a honest opinion it's a shitty overpriced piece of indy garbage.
Look at games made by Konjak ( http://konjak.org/ ) for a example of a indy game done right.

@Sift I've seen that review, and even though I seriously agree with the criticisms, I think they're missing the point. The RPG mechanics are definitely broken and actively detract from the rest of game... but the reviewer also said they don't see the appeal of the social/building aspects. That's the main reason to play Minecraft though!
That person went in expecting a game-y game and came away disappointed, because yes, that's the case. Even though the game elements are broken and make it harder to do anything else, it's still a fun sandbox, and they don't seem to get that.
