Sooooo, the "enhanced" part of the combat was that quick time event at the end?
Posted: Dec 1st 2011 9:52PM Helghast102 said
@xenophy Looks that way, but I think the Mog Clock and Paradigm Formations count as enhancements too.
I don't mind the combat not changing much, it was my favourite part of XIII, and easily one of the best battle systems in the series

I just checked the FFwiki, found the CSB changes
*Can now change party leader at will during battle
*Paradigm shifts are now instant, and will not pause your actions for a brief moment
*New Wounded status, cuts max HP, can be cured with an item or by winning the battle
*Paradigm Tuning, allowing you to change your party members targets, this is done pre-battle in the paradigm deck
*Cinematic Action, QTE's

@Helghast102 Paradigm tuning sounds a bit like gambits from ff12

@Helghast102 The first one did have instant paradigm shifts, but with the exception of the first one you did, which was unnecessarily long. :(
I wonder if the glitch or feature (depending on your opinion) of switching your paradigm in the middle of an attack giving you a full action bar will be in the game or not.

Im not a big fan of QTEs or having to wiggle the analog stick back and forth to break stuns/dizzyness.

@SgtDookie I hate QTEs.My disposition towards them soured even more after -for some reason based on spontaneous madness- playing Spiderman 3. The whole game was a QTE. Pressing buttons in sequence like in a mini-game or something (like overriding power plants in Just Cause 2 or the music sequences in Alice) are fine, but what really grinds my gears is when QTE are the core mechanic and persist ad nauseum.

It's entirely possible to love Shenmue and still hate QTEs, though. I did.

XIII-2 will be purely linear as XIII or it will have exploration? I finally got XIII and man is boring, i want to explore.

I don't hate QTE's or anything but that was the only difference I noticed honestly. Hm. Not only that but the music was awful compared to the battle music of XIII regular. Too bad too. I loved the soundtrack to XIII. The battle music especially.

@Mastrius Paradigm Tune: You can set different behaviors for each job in the menus in between battles. This is like a very simplified gambit system. The example they gave is choosing to have your COM focus on different enemies or the same enemy. In FFXIII, you didn't get this choice and this was dependent on the job combination automatically. There are probably other variations for each job such as setting Synergist to focusing on offense or defense first.
QTE's: You all knew this one.
Feral Link: This is your monster's power move, which varies. Some monsters do an attack, some do a healing move, I'm sure they're all different. And with 150 monsters, I'm sure there's a lot to mess around with. Your monsters can also level in the crystarium tree.
Change Leader: You can change leaders mid-battle. I think this also changes the battle theme.
Blood Damage: Now you can get hit with damage that limits your max HP and cannot be healed. As this accumulates in battles, it encourages you to play efficiently with the paradigm deck so that you can't just hit X and sit on COM/SEN/MED and take your time.
Rankings: The 5 star system increases chances of rare item drops, increases chances of capturing a monster, and you get gil after battles now.
Difficulty: Increased overall. They also added an easy mode so you don't get stuck.
Guest characters: You can have a 4th character join your party as a guest that is controlled by A.I.
Weather: Now weather impacts spells and influences elemental strengths and weaknesses.

I think they just tried to advertise "quick-time event" as "cinematic action"?

oh wow, press a button before the long a.s.s timer runs out. amazing -_-
I hate the paradigm system. If they want to have fast action, just let it be real time battling and take turns out altogether. The turn based system i liked the most was FFX.

I like them if they're done properly. God of War does them quite well usually, and Heavy Rain had some good moments as well. When they're just a big button in the middle of the screen (like COD/BF3/All the other lazy QTE games) I don't like them.
To me QTEs are best used in a "cinematic" moment. One where you can't do what the character is doing on the screen with the normal gameplay options available to you. Of course many will argue that if the character can't do something in game, they shouldn't do that in a video either, but whatever, I like them...

I'm all for more of the Paradigm system, there was just a really critical problem with the thing as a whole: every enemy was a damn health-sponge that took forever to kill, causing the battle system to overstay its' welcome way too fast. I think that's really the thing that hurts the game the most, that the battles aren't as quick and frantic as they ought to be.
If the pace of the battles was quickened up, and the plot didn't have so much of "I regret this thing I did so much and I have to talk about it but I'm so ashamed of it that I can't...", then the game probably would have been better-received.

Geeeeeez, Square Enix needs to stop trying to copy Western developers. If someone told me 5 years ago that in the future a Final Fantasy game would have quicktime events and a downloadable costume from Assassin's Creed I would say, "What's Assassin's Creed?". Once explained to me I would laugh and say, "No, Square Enix isn't that dumb!"
Final Fantasy games have always been about the story and as cheesy as they are I've always gotten deeply immersed in them. There's no way I can be deeply immersed in a Final Fantasy that has one of my characters dressed as whoever that assassin dude is from whatever that assassin game is. Will there be a Commander Shepard cameo as well?
P.S.
People need to stop criticizing this FFXIII for being linear. if that is an honest complaint about this game that it really isn't the game for you. The game's trying to tel you a story, that doesn't make it a bad game! Go play Skyrim!

@serialsleeper Linearity wasn't the problem. The problem was that you were literally running down a hallway for the entire game. The open space at the end of the game was just a place to grind.
I agree with you that linearity doesn't necessarily equal bad but FFXIII really dropped the ball on the formula.

They need to stop copying western developers? WTF are you smoking. They haven't copied shit, and if they tried to copy something, they failed fcking miserably. They could have made FFXIII a CGI movie like Advent Children and i would have got more entertainment out of it. Instead you hit X all the way through it. Tell me what western developer does this? None of them, because Western developers actually know how to develop a game. If anything, SE needs to take more Ques from western developers.
Its just a shame SE has ruined there once respectable brand in these past few years. How i miss you FF 1-10.

I still don't like the battle system. The QTE's aren't bad. They breakup the monotony and make it more engaging for the player (as long as its not abused).
But I still can't get past the battle system. I hate just sitting back and watching my characters do everything. Its just BRUTAL on lengthy battles. Like the optional final hunt boss from FFXIII. 45 min of just sitting there in a constant pattern and randomly swapping between heal, buff, attack, turtle, rinse, repeat. This style of battle just takes me away from the characters since I don't dictate any attacks just to change costumes.
