And here we thought Nintendo commissioned the real-life Mario Kart kart just so its existence could tease us perpetually. The real reason is so some lucky person out there can own this thing; a GameStop patron to be exact.
The kart will be given to a select PowerUp Rewards member. Eligible members simply need to purchase or trade something in during the month of December to be entered into the drawing, either in-store or online. Good luck, because nothing really ties the living room together like a giant, life-sized Mario Kart prop.
... What? You would put it in the garage? Psh.

So does this actually have an engine and such? It doesn't look like it, and the word "prop" makes me think otherwise... but I'm holding out hope...

If the 3DS "Nintendo eShop" video on it is correct, then yes - it should actually be drive-able. The eShop has a video on "Nintendo Show 3D" that mentions its West Coast Customs creation and display for an autoshow last month. Autoblog and Joystiq both had articles on it previously.

Should be a fairly simple contest to rig in your favor. The people who shop at Gamestop aren't the people who would care about Mario Kart.

Not really. it seems to be eligible for anyone that buys a used game or trades in a game using the member card. i lived in a somewhat poor part of LA and i would constantly see little kids going in and out of the store to trade in their games only to buy the next used game they want. Without knowing it they will be entered in the competition.

Awesome! A replica of the freaking a freaking Mario Kart? This would be a wonderful addition to my Mario themed room.
I would do anything to win this.
Well...except sign up for GameStop PowerUp rewards.
Meh, it wouldn't look that great in my room.

It does run, they had the kart on display here in LA during the LA Auto Show. It's actually still on display at the Topanga mall I believe.

Wow this old copy of UFC 2010 for PS3 (which I don't even have anymore) just became pretty useful. Fifty cents trade in and a contest entry.
I wish it was Wario though :(
I'mma gonna win!

When I was a student at Digipen, and Digipen was connected to Nintendo, I could swear they had a for real Mario Kart go-kart in their warehouse. Never was able to get a good look at it though. I can only assume they check Mario Kart gameplay against the real thing for accuracy.
