Stuttering, unwieldy exploration in the PlayStation 3 version of Skyrim may be a symptom of the game's design and its consumption. Players report dramatically impeded performance creeping into the frigid realm, as save files grow and in-game clocks count down to the imminent death of a social life.
The problem, while particular to the game's complexity and duration, may be rooted in memory management, according to pixel counting pros Digital Foundry. "The bottom line is that Skyrim is an unbounded game world running on a space-constricted system - and this applies regardless of the platform you play it on, hence reports of the PC version running out of address space and displaying solid colours instead of textures," says Tom Morgan. "The PlayStation 3 is unfortunate in that it's the platform with the most oppressive RAM issues (in addition to the split-pool set-up of the memory, the OS has a larger footprint than its 360 equivalent) so it makes sense that it has the most noticeable issues."
Said issues led to some disastrous framerate hiccups in Digital Foundry's 65-hour game ("It's the first time our performance analysis tools have ever recorded a 0FPS reading.") and inspired a warning to consumers from CVG. The latest Skyrim patch reportedly brings improvements, but DF suggests it may still become "unplayable for those with a huge time investment in the game - unless you're only willing to play Skyrim in half-hour bursts, saving and restarting the game."
We'd advise you to take regular breaks anyway, though we'd prefer if they were less motivated by the game breaking down. As usual, we'll keep you updated as Bethesda issues further updates to all versions of Skyrim.

This really only occurs after I had the game on for about an hour.
If people are complaining about having to restart a game because it disrupts their 24/7 gaming binges, you need to learn about a little something called "moderation". It's a good thing. This issue only affects the "several hours at a time" player.
Really, the restart of the game takes 4 minutes top, guys.

I don't know man...if I was watching Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray and had to take the movie off every hour for 4 minutes I'd be pretty pissed I bought Lord of the Rings on Blu-Ray.
No matter how you look at it, it's still kinda messed up that the PS3 is stuck with a borked version of such a fantastic game.

@ItchyBarracuda 4 minute start up time, so if i have to restart the game 5 times i'll have spent 20 minutes looking at a load screen. that sounds like a great time. /sarcasm

that doesn't always work.
For example, my saves are starting to clock in at 6.2 mb, but the game really took a performance hit for some reason right after completing the Dark Brotherhood missions. And the problem wouldn't go away even after 2x quit/restarts.
Not sure how it ironed itself out, but once the storyline was complete, the drop in framerate went away and now it's back to normal (thank goodness).
*crosses fingers for continued health of Skyrim performance*
Which reminds me, I should start saving my saves to an external hard drive periodically in case my ps3 suddenly dies. Nothing like losing 20-30 hours of progress on a sandbox title...

Ironically, the same people complaining about the "huge waste of time" that will be incurred by periodically having to restart the game will defend to the death having to swap discs on a 360.

As much as I agree with you in moderation, I don't agree that that moderation needs to happen from the game breaking bugs. We are the customers, their promise of a quality product is not living up to our expectations. Expect people to be upset.
Plus not everyone games like you do. Let's say 6 hours a week of video games is moderation. For some people that's 1-2 hours a day while others will do a big gaming session in one day and leave the rest of the week to their real lives.

How would those be the same people? This is about the PS3, so people complaining about the 4 minute waste of time are talking about using their PS3, hence not the same people allegedly talking about the 360.
Also, this game is on 1 disc on 360.
Facts, who needs them?

Give players content and fun, and they won't care how many bugs your game has, and they will even go so far as to make it the game of the year.
It's too bad, it's only encouraging Bethesda to do even less quality control on their game, especially with sites like Joystiq praising Skyrim's bugs in videos about how "awesome" they are.

I think you bring up a valid point.
While the fundamental gameplay and design of Skyrim is hella awesome, as an actual product it is...well...terrible.
I don't know how much you can use that to argue it GOTY potential, and the fact that it hasn't stopped any of us from playing it. BUT, it really seems like the gaming collective is giving Bethesda a litttttle too much of a pass for this.
Why weren't points taken off for the glitches in reviews?
'Cause the game is that good? Well yea, it is, but ummm I just defeated a backwards dragon with a bucket and am now 1,000 feet in the air.

It's funny because even with all it's faults it's still by far in my top 3 and edges out Uncharted 3 for my personal goty. Game of the year isn't really based on technical specifications. Skyrim is one of the best experiences I've ever had in gaming.

"Why weren't points taken off for the glitches in reviews?"
My two guesses; 1) the major game breaking glitches for PS3 from what I have heard come in around 25-30 hours of gameplay, so possible they just didn't play that much on the PS3 version and never came across the major glitch. 2) IGN posted their PS3 review late due to Bethesda only sending them PC and 360 versions early, and even admitted they gave it the same review with only 10-15 hours of playtime on the PS3 version. So it's possible Bethesda sent out the PS3 version late to avoid the early negative press.
Honestly, I prefer PS3, but if I had more then one platform for games I would have stayed away from the PS3 version had this come to light day 1.

I feel ya. I have a hard time getting into the games myself, since they're pretty far separated from my typical desire to pick up a game and have an intense bout of action-packed mayhem that can be tucked away after an hour or so. I admire their scope, though, and could probably enjoy them more if I had all the spare time in the world to dedicate to them. I *could* just blaze through the main quest line and be done with it before long, but I'd be driven mad knowing that there's so much more to do.

I've seen comments like this from a few people, but Skyrim is worth checking out. I too couldn't get into their previous games, but Skyrim hooked me almost instantly. The game world is simply the best I've ever seen. The missions can get repetitious at times (e.g. tons of missions involve caves). But, damn, it's just so addicting.

This makes sense why I haven't been seeing more issues. I generally play 4-5 hours, max, then shut everything down. Although over the weekend I did start to see some major issues... but my play sessions probably increased in length.
Guess I should play with a timer on from now on!

I still haven't really had much difficulty with the PS3 version. Occasional slowdown, but I've logged 50+ hours with less than 3 crashes over that time. Maybe I just have been getting lucky. Been saving like mad just to be safe.

I found two quest breaking bugs last night. One is a Miscellaneous quest where I picked the item up prior to getting the quest, and now cannot give the item to the quest giver. Since there is no way to tell that an item is a quest item prior to picking it up, there's no way to avoid a situation like this. This is a series of quests to collect books for a guy at the mages college.
The other one is with the Companions in Whiterun. Every time I try to take the very first quest for them, it stays active for a little while, and then just fails and moves to the completed/failed quest area. I ended up backing up an hour to just avoid taking any Companion quests until a patch hopefully fixes that. The quest destination is a dungeon I had previously cleaned out because another quest sent me there.
Incredibly disappointing to hit 2 quest breaking bugs in the span of a couple of hours.

@Courtney There seem to be a lot of item related bugs. I found a glitch for a Winterhold College Quest where you're asked to retrieve some stolen books, but when you get to the room with the books one of them keeps disappearing. Had to restart 3 times.

I had a lot of trouble with the first quest where the guy at the magic college teaches you that blocking spell. I had to restart like 6 times because the spell never made its way into my magic inventory. It was like it never initiated the quest. Really annoying.
