New Last of Us art pieces hint at a world-ending disease

You might have already guessed that Sony's PS3 exclusive The Last of Us was probably about an apocalyptic virus of some kind, just by watching that video released last weekend. And these two new shots that have appeared on the official site don't do much to prove you wrong: One shot shows a forest, with the view pointed up into the sun, and the second, above, pictures a ruined newspaper stand talking about the President addressing a broken nation as "millions more are feared dead or infected," and quarantines breaking in New Mexico while martial law is declared in England.

In short, the world is packed nicely into a handbasket, with some sort of infectious disease filling out the customs-required shipping forms to a final destination of Hell. We've seen the world end lots of times before, but maybe The Last of Us has an artsy new spin on it. We'll likely find out more this weekend at Saturday's Spike Video Game awards, or as the site says, on 12/10/11. Get those surgical masks ready, people.

Yea..that's what everyone said about Dead Island.

The advertising was brilliant but the gameplay was just like any other zombie game. Everyone though, "this will be different", "this game will set the bar for all zombie games" Turns out it didn't do any of those.

But here's to hoping.

The one that played in reverse? I thought it was awesome. So did millions of other people.

But the point still stands. Very vague advertising like this and Dead Island usually cover up a terrible game that has been done before. They just want you to be wow'd by it and pre-order it blindly.

Luckily some of us aren't that stupid.

the key is to be able to see through the bullshit in advertising.
Firstly, graphics wise - dead islands trailer was CG showing no gameplay. lo and behold the graphics were rather bad, with a pretty setting standing in for sub-par rendering.
Last of Us is starting off with an in-engine trailer and the graphics seem to be amazing, so that already is one bullshit that Last of Us doesn't pull

Secondly, is the developer behind it. Any smart person should have known to expect mediocrity as soon as they saw that it was being developed by techland who literally hasn't crafted any AAA title before. Also, by the time the gameplay was being previewed, they completely abandoned the tone of the first trailer and introduced characters like sam B the rapper. Really?

Last of Us is said to have a very competent developer. Rumors point to either Sony Santa Monica, Guerrila, or Quantic Dream. All three of them would take a project like this much more seriously than Techland did with Dead Island, and would devote much more to the characters, story, and involving gameplay.

Finally, I don't believe Last of Us will be what Dead Island became. On the contrary, I believe Last of Us will be what Dead Island should have been.

Experience has taught me not to get excited when a well executed marketing campaign rolls around, but c'mon... Whoever is making this, please, PLEASE make something as compelling as your advertisements promise! A thousand cheap, lazy, exploitative pitfalls are between you and an engaging apocalyptic game, but with the time apparently invested and Sony funding, I can't really help but get my hopes up.

Very true point about the dead island trailer. But in my case in particular I don't pre order games. I wait till they are out and read the reviews.
But from what little has been show this is looking good.

@Omnistatic He has a point. I have all 3 consoles, and my PS3 gets used least. Less than my Wii for Christ sake. If you have an Xbox and a PS3 the only 3 reasons to use the PS3 more are that you like the exclusives better, don't feel like paying for live, or all your friends are on PSN too. Can't really think of anything else. None of those things apply to me.

What idiot buys a PS3 for Blu-ray and Netflix streaming only? Hell, you can buy a Blu-ray player that can stream Netflix for about a $100.

Also, you should look up the word wasteful.

So Microsoft has Undead lab's Class 3 and Now Sony has "unknown developer's" The Last of Us. Wow this is interesting I hope The Last of Us has some sort of tower defense online gamemode that'll be fun.

@covertpetersen I play my PS3, but it's usually only 2-3 times a year when exclusives I'm interested are out. This isn't me trolling, just stating my opinion. If you like PS3 cool, I don't all that much. Then again I've never been a PS gamer.

Back when PS3's first came out, which is when I bought mine. They were cheaper than ANY Blue-Ray players because it was when Blue-Ray first came out.

So essentially you have a PS3 and Blue Ray player for $200 less than any regular Blue-Ray player. Who would pass up that deal?

That's an objective opinion, I have a PS3, 360, Wii and a gaming PC. I don't use my Wii (gave it to my sister) and my 360 is used for Live and the occasional 360 exclusive as well as the odd game that looks and plays better on 360. Other than that, anything 360 has is either on PC or PS3, plus PC has modding and less annoying restrictions.

So all in all my PS3 gets most gaming time. Especially this past few months when I got BF3, Uncharted 3 and Saints Row 3 for it. I bought Modern Warfare 3 and Arkham City for my 360 but CoD is meh now and AC is complete.

So yeah, that's a personal opinion, don't make it sound like the same thing you think and feel applies to everyone.

A 100 dollar Blu-Ray player may or may not be on the same level as a PS3 in terms of output quality. Not only that, but one may pick one up with that specific purpose, knowing that there aren't any games that interest them, but that there may be in the near future. Its nice to have the possibilities, and a 300 piece of hardware that is as flexible as the PS3 is not a waste no matter what feature you utilize.

You're a troll, you came in, blabbered some nonsense about not finding a use for your PS3 until you saw this EPIC trailer of......well....nothingness. Your comment made no sense whatsoever O_o I don't even know why you brought in Dead Island because that just makes your comment look EVEN more stupid. Dead Island wasn't gameplay but it certainly had more to show than this trailer did, from it we could establish that it was a zombie game and the name specified that it was a zombie game on an island. No one has the slightest clue what this game is even about, thus the speculation, then along comes you and decides (for some unknown reason) to put some generic comment about not using your PS3 until you saw a trailer of clips from real life events which made your days magical and gave you hope, if you wanted that, you could have just looked at youtube or the news :/
