The thing that has occurred that PC gaming needs to rebound from, has already begun to occur. If Ubisoft proves fiscally successful in abandoning PC gaming support, other large publishers will simply follow suit. Why wait until PC gaming is in full decline, because of greedy publishers to acknowledge a serious problem for the platform is on the horizon?

If gamers were a bit more pro-active, instead of always being reactive, then bad things that tend to happen to us (which seems regularly these days), probably could be averted in the first place.

Like it or not, what Ubisoft is doing, is a huge threat to the long term health of PC gaming. And anything that can convince them and other publishers to not walk that particular path, before they are fully committed to it, is good for everyone - us and them. Face it, when even Valve is getting all chumming with PS3 . . . not saying Valve would ever abandon PC gaming. If any company would stick with PC gaming no matter what, Valve would be it. But I can also see a day within the next few years, where Valve is the only major publisher left supporting PC gaming, should Ubisoft prove through their actions that abandoning the PC is a fiscally sound business decision.

So maybe nerdydesi1 wasn't talking about the future, and like many gamers, mistook all the negative hype from a few years back about the death PC gaming to be true. Still, does not mean that looking forward as PC gamers, we do not have some dire issues to ultimately resolve to continue to keep the health of PC gaming on the up.

@Tachyonic Cargo What's hurting PC gaming is that it's five percent of the overall video game market. If you were going to invest $20 million in developing and marketing a game, would you want to focus on the PC market that might buy a million copies, or the console market that might buy ten million copies? Being "pro-active" isn't going to change the economics of the situation.

PC gaming is in there it's just not directly in there. This portable app just compliments an already established application that can run on most PCs.

so yeah, if people look into this on their iphones and ipads first just to get some simple games, it might push them to look into it further on their PCs to buy more complicated games.

I can sorta almost see where you are coming from in that perhaps if people buy a game on OnLive to play on their iPhone they might maybe possibly actually buy a PC game at some later date for the PC.

But that's sorta like arguing that Skyrim on the PS3 is going to be a huge boon for the PC market.... because maybe just maybe perhaps people will possibly buy a PC game because they played Skyrim on their PS3.

OnLive isn't as much PC as it is its own pseudo console.

5% of the market? That's not what pretty much ALL of the data from publisher reports, to market research say.

And 10 million sales on console? I can point to maybe 2 games that achieve those kind of sales on the xbox (and none on the PS3). And at least 1 that does the same on PC.

Seriously, what drugs are you on?

Those are the couple of outliers, for almost all other games, sub-million sales is the norm on BOTH consoles and PC.

And the market research say that digital + retail + MMO's on PC are about 30% of the market Vs ALL CONSOLES COMBINED being about 45% of the market.

A 15% difference, is significant, but as you can see, the MAJORITY of publishers out there are still putting out quality games for the PC, multi-plats AND exclusives.

It must be making money, otherwise they wouldn't bother. Heck EA invested in their own digital download store!

When games like Portal 2, BAttlefield Bad Company 2, super meat boy, dungeon defenders, and several others are making MORE money on PC than console, and when there are 300,000 concurrent gamers on Steam playing Skyrim for an entire weekend (and to support 300,000 concurrent users for an entire weekend, you'd need a user base in the millions), the message is quite clear.

I know console fanboys won't listen, but investors and higher ups in the game publishing business ARE listening.

You really need to go back and check your facts, as they are waaaaaay off.

For starters, just core gamers who shop at Steam alone, you are looking at over 40 million gamers. This is not counting all the core games customers who shop retail, and other PC digital distribution outlets like OnLive, D2D, GFWL, et al. And this number most certainly does not take into account the tens of millions of core MMO gamers. The core PC gaming industry is very healthy, and takes up a huge chunk of the overall core gaming pie.

Secondly, unless your game has GTA, Halo, Call of Duty, and possibly now, Battlefield in it's name somewhere, selling ten million copies or more across ALL platforms combined is out of the question. There was a point when Assassin's Creed hit that mark, but Ubisoft milked it too much and well, that's their problem. The facts are, the vast majority of games, when you look at their combined total across all platforms (PC included), only shift around 2 million units in a lifetime. You are extremely lucky if you can find a single game exclusive to console that moves more than those numbers.

So this idea that PC gaming represents only 5% of the overall core gaming market, is the lamest bit of misinformation that I have read in ages on the subject matter.

@Scuffles The games that OnLive streams are PC games, that's where the PC comes in. If publishers can sell more PC games because of OnLive (since it can now make these games accessible to a wider audience including low-powered PCs and tablets), then that is a win for the PC gaming industry.

So, to play this comfortably on a smartphone/tablet with a wireless controller, where exactly would you be placing your device, in a stand or something? That would seem rather cumbersome. It's not like you can just lay up in your bed and play this, or even on the toilet (the secret mecca of portable gaming) and use a controller and hold your mobile device simultaneously. I think this is where a video would've come into play, 'cuz currently I don't see how this would be very practical.

Not being an ass, I'm just genuinely curious about this aspect.

They could have something like a clip-on piece of plastic right on top of the controller for you to snap the smartphone on. Not totally seamless and wouldn't work on the iPad, but it's something at least.

I assume you're being sarcastic, but this changes OnLive from "allows me to play slightly laggy console games on my TV which is already connected to real consoles" to "allows me to play slightly laggy XBox and PC games on my iPad with a real controller." The latter is much more appealing!

@IrishSJ Nevermind just loaded up Darksiders and the only option was the toucu controls with the buttons all over the screen. But man, once they patch this and allow us to map the buttons to physical controls, this is gonna be insane. Arkham City on my phone sounds pretty sweet!

Tried this on a Motorola Atrix, the screen had a constant pink hue. Droid X2 users are complaining of the same. This obviously has a lot of potential, I hope they fix the bugs quickly. I tried out Lara Croft: Guardian of Light with touch controls, and it was very fluid..but everything was pink :-/

@Mike Schramm - I have heard that the custom touch controls for LA Noire are something to be extremely excited about. I read somewhere, where someone was commenting that it was the proper way to convert an existing game to touch, and that more than any game currently available from OnLive with touch controls, exemplified the true potential that OnLive running on mobile devices represented.

Tall words, indeed. So perhaps once Joystiq gets the opportunity to go over the game with those custom touch controls in place, you'll pass along an update to the rest of us about your impressions on the matter. I think all of us are interested in how fast touch controls from OnLive can go from "all over the place", to being a legitimate way to play OnLive games . . . this goes doubly so for Kindle Fire owners, who as I understand cannot use OnLive's Universal controller.

The wireless controller is what makes it all worthwhile.

Good question but I think its probably some along the lines of making the controller/phone combo bulky and less than travel friendly.

People already complained enough about the PSP supporting the PS3 controllers largely because it defeated the whole purpose of the PSP being, ya know, portable.

........... Well I certainly hope everyone who sees OnLive as a big savings and gaming of the future is going to be springing for their carriers expensive unlimited data plans.

Plans that will probably be revised to exclude such streaming content services as OnLive in the future. Since at present they are only offering unlimited because at present "Unlimited" on phones is hard for people to actually use.

Unlimited that also probably has some hidden size -3 font data cap and overages :P

Oh but you can play it on WiFi at work/school without touching your data plan ^^ Until they notice the bandwidth spike and block the OnLive ports.

OnLive isn't OnLives biggest failing point ..... its everything between the customers and OnLive that really drag it down. (See: ISPs/Carriers)

I have the cheapest plan. I get 250gb a month at home that's just fine for me, I've been gaming pretty heavily with them since saints row and AC:R and I'm using about 7 gigs a night, and that's with my gf watching netflix on the PS3

Sounds like your ISP not so much your cellular provider. 250gb also seems to be on the chopping block for most larger US commercial ISPs. They all seem to want to move to metering and tiered service, tho hopefully that doesn't happen.

Tho if it is your cell provider I'm interested in knowing the cost of their cheapest plan per month that offers 250gb with tethers.

Having onLive on something like the iPhone for me is all about portability not hopping from WiFi hotspot to WiFi hotspot. Its the trip on the train in the morning to the office, its that cross country plane ride.... its any time I'm going somewhere and not driving.

They have done a decent job of ensuring that OnLive will function on everything under the sun, sure my next toaster will probably be able to use it ........ and?

The issue I take is this breaks down to portable without portability ~.~ or at least prohibitively expensive portability. Because at least all the cellular data plans that claim to be unlimited are $80-100+/month and usually "Unlimited" turns out to be surprisingly limited.

As a guy who travels quite a bit to places I'd rather skip, and as a guy who misses his XBOX360 second only to his children, this *sounds* great.

However, hotel in-room internet is notoriously awful. And the office internet at the places I visit will almost certain block this traffic.
