You probably wouldn't guess it by talking to one of us, but petrolheads do have the ability to get burnt out on a specific vehicle. It may take a long time, granted, but eventually we'll get bored with our current ride and wish that we had some new iron to tool around with. It's called "Gear Acquisition Syndrome" (GAS), and GAS can be devastatingly expensive if left unchecked.
Thankfully though, the GAS methadone clinic known as Gran Turismo 5 is here to keep those urges in check with a title update and several new sets of wheels, all of which become available on December 20. Car Pack 2 will set you back $3.99 and will furnish your ever-growing garage with a 2012 Nissan GT-R Black R35, a 2010 Volkswagen Scirocco R, a 2010 Volkswagen Gold VI R and the 2011 Mini Cooper S. Additionally, anyone who has purchased GT5 DLC in the past will also receive the Gran Turismo Racing Kart 125 SP, which is go-kart for some reason.
The (free) 2.02 title update also includes a set of wheels: The recently revealed 2013 Toyota GT-86. Beyond that, the update boasts a slew of interface improvements and even nets you 10 oil change and car wash coupons (in-game, of course). Hopefully this will keep our greasy little mechanic hands busy enough to prevent us from taking out a second mortgage and buying that Thunderbird we've been eyeing.

Sounds like they are finally feeling the pressure of competition. Good.

It simply wouldn't be a GT update without yet another GTR. We're getting low on Miata's, better add 2 for the next update to make up for this one.

@singleandlovinit this was a thing for the 90s car culture in Japan. Nuances between each year and differnet models were important. They are not so important now and there won't be as many duplicates in future games.

if they really wanna beat forza they'll put all the (actual) dashboards on all the cars and frequently add courses and cars every week or so
and not every other month...

A game that took 7 years to make and was one of the most anticipated games on the ps3 damn well better sell more than a game with an iteration every 2 years. What other option did PS3 owners have?
Critical thinking folks. You'll need it in the working world.

GT5 has a larger fanbase- its a more established franchise while Forza is still the newcomer. According to VGChartz (not a great source, I understand, but the only place I could find both without really digging), Forza 3 has sold ~5m, while GT5 has sold ~7m. For two games of the same genre released at approximately same time, with the newcomer being rated higher on average than GT5, I'd say that's pretty damn good and puts a good bit of pressure on Polyphony Digital and Sony.
I'd also say that when there are two games of the same genre, where one is rated higher on average, and the lower rated one still sells higher, its probably only because of hype and fanbase.

GT5 was released 24/25th November 10.
Forza 4 was released 11-13th October 11.
That's not roughly the same time.

I said Forza 3. He said Forza 4. I didn't even mention Forza 4 for the very exact reason you're responding to me- they were released a year apart.
Some advice: reading helps with the process of comprehension.

I don't care what cars they have, I'm not going to race what sounds like vacuum cleaners. Totally killed the game imo.

I'm glad Forza came out and is giving GT some good competition.
Hopefully Polyphony will see what Turn 10 has done with car customization, online play and interaction and makes some changes to future GT games to make them more relevant to the current gaming.
With what Polyphony has been doing with their patches makes it seem like they realize GT5 wasn't what it needed to be and that they understand what they needed to do with the next GT game.

Yep. As much as I hate the downsides to competition in the gaming industry (read: fanboy-driven flame wars), Gran Turismo really needs Forza. I mean, I've been having quite a bit of fun even with GT5's very basic online, but GT6 has the potential to really step it up if Kaz identifies all the things Forza does better than Gran Turismo.
I have a feeling that all of these patches, were it left up to Kaz, would've been in the final game. To do that, however, would have delayed the game further, and Sony finally drew a line.

Forza 4 is not competition for GT5. Sorry.
Look at the sales numbers:
http://www.msxbox-world.com/features/article/913/gran-turismo-5-kills-forza-4-sales-but-why.html
that's an Xbox website.
in the first 8 weeks GT5 sold close to 5 million.
Forza 4 just sold over a million.

Oh and one more thing it's really disgusting how alot of immature people love to bash a product without any major motivation other than getting off on it. I own both games and i do admit there's a lot of great things going for forza 4. However Forza 4 does not have me as hooked as gt5 when it came out and no i'm not defending the botched shadows on the cars, the very few premium cars vs standard gt4 uprezzed cars, the million and 1 nissan variants and game save crashing bugs. What I am saying is forza is not perfect either and it is missing the 'soul' that gt5 has as a series and I prefer that but turn 10 has done an outstanding job and derserves to be comended. They have extracted every last ounce of power that the 360 has and for that we should all be proud.

Well, for the most part. Every once in a while, one pops up and reminds you that there is still evil in the world, and a truckload of puppies drives off a cliff while children weep.
