We've received complaints about Xbox Live profile errors over the last week. Subscribers are prevented from downloading their profiles off Live, locking them out of the online network and purchased content. The code we've been tipped on the most is error "801540B7," but we've also seen a similar issue with "80070571," both relating to Live profiles.
We contacted Microsoft to find out if there was a common cause that we could report on and help prevent. We've only heard about these problems since the new Xbox Live dashboard became available earlier this month.
"We have recently identified an Xbox Live profile data error that results in Error Code '801540B7' for a small number of Xbox Live members. The error instructs users to attempt to re-download their Xbox Live profile and directs them to customer service support for further assistance," a Microsoft spokesperson told Joystiq. "We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused to our loyal Xbox Live members and are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible."
If you've experienced error "801540B7," or a similar profile error, contact us and describe exactly what happened when the error occurred.

No error for me (so far) which is good. I've seen a few people raggin' on the new dashboard, but I actually don't mind it so far. I still don't "get" these apps, but I've basically ignored them and my gaming and video-watching is just dandy.

I could write an essay on how this could seriously be improved. but I'll just say this:
the games section is not the first thing the Xbox opens up when you sign in. That is is like going to a restaurant and getting the desert menu first and the dinner menu last.

The game you have in the tray is the window it boots on and there's a "quickplay" right below it that contains shortcuts to all your recently played arcade games. I don't see what the problem is. It is literally 1 button press to launch your disc now (or zero, if you have boot-to-disc on.)
Sure it would be great if you could populate your own home screen with whatever you used most, but it's probably not going to happen.

Of course there are improvements to be made, especially with controller navigation. As a gamer, I, too, feel that I should be miffed about the games section being a fraction of a second farther away from the home screen. I have only rarely needed to venture that far to access the content I'm seeking, though, because the games I want to play are generally either in the tray or in the quick launch section.
The couple of times that I have used it, however, I have found that I do genuinely dislike the new games section; it is no longer as easy to find what I am looking for. I can admit defeat and tell the Kinect to do it for me, but as it loads up, I can't shake this feeling that all it really heard was: "This is my glowy spot, please don't shoot it."

I like the improvement with the Kinect features, but one thing that makes no sense is why are games slower to launch if you use a voice command? For example, if I simply click A on the controller to launch the disc it he screen goes black and the game begins to load almost immediately. OTOH, if I say "Xbox play disc" the text "Playing disc" appears for a few seconds and then it begins to launch the game. I don't know if there's supposed to be time to cancel in there or something, but I find it a bit annoying.

I was one of the ones who sent this story in, thank you for running this Joystiq. My hope is that more attention to this error will get Microsoft moving a little more swiftly.
It's been over a week since I've been able to connect to XBOX Live because of the 801540B7 Error. This literally could not have come at a worse time, with all these great games out. I really hope it is fixed before the weekend, but I doubt it.
The most frustrating part is the lack of communication from Microsoft. I have gone out of my way to contact XBOX support via chat/phone/twitter, because it seems they have forgot about use. The only thing I've heard from them are empty pleasantries that they are "investigating the issue". To be without service for this long, is getting kind of ridiculous. Hopefully it gets resolved soon.

@Truz I had the same issue, but it just magically started working after about 5 days. Hopefully yours starts working soon. I sat on the phone with XBL support for about 2 hours one night, and they ended up referring me to a "gamer profile team" that would contact me in 3-5 days. They never did contact me, but it did start working, so there you go.

I've seen two issues lately:
One was a friend of mine getting rejected from downloading his profile due to a similar error code. His problem was that his Live account was locked and he needed to sign in online to unlock it and change his password.
However, ever since I got a new router, I've had to 'test connection' every time I turn on my Xbox or else I can't connect. It was fine when I first put it in. I'm unsure if it's the router or Xbox Live itself, but this makes me hope it's XBL.

That may be your router; I had similar problems in the past after moving to FIOS. Are you using DHCP? If so, you may want to alter your setup to give your 360 a static IP address outside of the DHCP block. If you don't want to do that, then make sure that your router has set the DHCP lease duration to a sane value (24 hours to a week is normal). Also, double-check that there's not any weird NAT settings on the router. What the "test connection" thing does is basically run through a cold-boot sequence that the router recognizes as a new device coming on, and it runs through some settings that the dashboard takes for granted (because by default they should be 'remembered' by the router). It sounds like your router is forgetting these details after the 360's been off for a fair amount of time. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight. I work with networking during the day (albeit very simple networking) so I like to think I know what I'm doing, but I've had all sorts of XBL trouble with this new router, and even ones before it.
Before this one, I could only DMZ/open ports to one Xbox at a time, as my brother has his own. uPnP would do the same thing, but it would often not "release" the first xbox until it was shut off and the router reset. But I could at least always connect, just with Moderate or Strict NAT.
Now it doesn't even connect, even with all of the ports opened up properly, until I do the test connection. I'll probably swap in the old router this weekend to see if it is indeed the router (Cisco E2500).
Oh well. Minor issue I suppose.

I had a hiccup last night; "Some Xbox Live content is not available at this time", was the error. I tried going into my friends list, and the Dashboard seemingly rebooted itself, and there were no further problems. That's literally the only problem I've had with Live since the 07-08 outage that wasn't caused by my router taking a dive. And I've even been in the betas for pretty much every dashboard update to date.
And incidentally: whenever a company says "they're investigating the issue", they really are, and it's a major problem. See, if they were going to ignore the problem, they wouldn't have even taken the time to send that message back. It's MS's ass if they send a message that says they're looking into it when they consciously know they aren't. So lay off the tech guys sending you a form letter saying that they're looking into it. The tech guys can spend their time writing everyone personalized apologies, or they can spend that time fixing it. Your choice.

My favorite part about the credit card storage for Microsoft: you can't delete your credit card.
i have a family account and you are required to have a valid card on file at all times for god knows what reason. So, I have a credit card that only has enough money to pay for my PSN and XBL accounts at any given moment.
Sure it sounds dumb and probably excessive, but at least I know that the most I could be out is $200 and can be easily disputed. for the points I just buy point cards when I'm out. It helps me avoid the impulse buys.

Error Code: 801540b7
Please describe the circumstances of the error: it all started ago from yesterday. I wanted to play mw3 with my friend cause we played the night previously. Tried to sign on got a could not connect to xbl message. Checked all of my equipment and tried again. Still no luck. I tried the trouble shooter on the 360 and it gave everything the good to go. Tried again, no luck. Taled to Custer support for a few hours and nothing, in the middle of all of the chatting with customer support they told me to delete my profile, so I did. Now I can't retrieve my profile. Play with my saved games or go onto xbl. 8 days and no real word from Microsoft. This is pathetic.
My gamer tag is neardeath06 if you wish to look me up.
All I want to do is play my games.

I'm curious why Joystiq is covering THIS story when they've ignored the Eurogamer story that most of the other gaming sites have reposted.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-new-dash-borks-video-playback
If you can get Microsoft to respond to THIS issue, why don't you get them to tell us when the hell they're going to fix the video output so that it's digitally correct again? Because the NXE dashboard at least displayed videos at the proper levels, whereas not only does the Metro dashboard NOT show the proper levels, it actually CHANGES reference levels if you start a video, stop it, then resume it. And it seems to be an issue across all of the new video apps, as well as the dashboard's video player and reportedly some video-based cutscenes in games, but Microsoft has ignored or deleted every single report of it thus far. Ridiculous. Why do they even have a preview program if they're going to ignore the people who reported these bugs?

@Ordeith Oh, so if your Blu-ray player or PS3 got an update that made it non-HDMI compliant and gave anything black a gray caste because the video levels were incorrect, you wouldn't consider that a big issue? And if the black level changed every time you started/stopped a video, you wouldn't consider that a major bug? The fact of the matter is that this worked correctly in the NXE dashboard... and doesn't now. And there have been HUNDREDS of complaints about it, all of which of been ignored thus far.
If you're happy having to change brightness and contrast on your TV every time you watch a video on your 360 just to get the same video quality of the previous dashboard, then more power to you. It isn't a "mountain out of a molehill" when the "update" downscales all your 1080p video to below 720p and messes with the black/white levels. The bottom line is that there is a video standard by which all video sources are supposed to be compliant... and whereas it was compliant before, now the Xbox 360 is not. Not even close. Worse, with all the new video apps, Microsoft's focus on video content is greatly sullied by the fact that none of those video apps display video at the correct levels. Any Reference Level you select in the system settings is objectively incorrect based on the hardware standards for video output.
The bottom line is that this update was not ready for release. These problems that Microsoft is having to respond to were not surprises to them, but they released it to the public anyway so they could push their new video apps. Fingers crossed that they fix all of these issues quickly, because I can't even watch Netflix on my 360 anymore thanks to it being a washed out horrible looking mess with the new dash.

I had an error logging on also, usually it logs on automatically, but 2 days ago I had to log on manually, and I had no problem with that, but when I clicked on my XBL profile, it said that the information on this Xbox live account was "Invalid" and required me to redownload the profile, but I can't because I don't remember the Windows Live ID. And have no way of figuring it out. Lost my Fallout save I started 3 days ago, lost RAAM's Shadow for Gears 3. Sad.
