Just play solo. For the most part you're able to do that. It's what I did and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Except a monthly fee is a major turn off for people who aren't in to MMOs and just want a single-player RPG.

I can see them publishing a press release saying "fastest-growing Star Wars MMO published by EA in history!"

It is enticing - does it require Origin? More enticing if not - but I think I'll wait a few months before I try it out, just to see how things pan out for the rest of you.

You don't need origin to download it. I'm pretty sure you don't even need an origin login to buy it. If you did, I certainly would never have given it a try.

For the one millionth time...IT DOES NOT REQUIRE ORIGIN. Once you BUY it through Origin you NEVER have to open it again.

Everything is done through the launcher. You never use Origin to play.

I have an affinity for tangible copies of games, so retail would be the way to go for me. That, and the collector's edition box is oh so sexy... and sadly, out of my price range at this time of year.

Given their otherworldly lead in the MMO space, I doubt Blizzard is as concerned with successful competition as it would be retaining players. As for a new MMO announcement by Blizzard, it'll happen before much more time has elapsed I'm sure, but supposedly their next MMO is a new intellectual property - I doubt they would claim as much and then announce a new World of Warcraft.

well they already announced the expansion,
so if WoW 2 ever happens it'll be years till even announcement
by that time Swtor might have their first expansion out and blow everything about warcraft out of the water

Their next "big" announcement is probably whatever TITAN is. WoW is in decline now. NOW BEFORE YOU FLAME ME UNDERSTAND THAT IS A BUSINESS TERM.

Its past the maturity cycle and it will hit a slow decline cycle over the next 2, 3, 5 years. Blizzard knows WoW is in that cycle so they are definitely moving to the next big project.

I admit, I quit WoW in this current cycle because I am getting bored with it. SWTOR is everything I want in a game right now.

@darkinchworm Blizzard doesn't care about how much they lead by, they care about lost revenue. KOTOR is going to take a big ass chunk out of their profit.

Blizzard will need to determine if the lost sales to KOTOR is greater than the cost of creating WoW2 or whatever they plan on doing with their next MMO. Until now it was more cost effective to just milk WoW since no other MMO was a threat. With a million players in the first week playing KOTOR it is no longer cost effective to keep milking WoW and bleeding players to KOTOR.

"Blizzard doesn't care about how much they lead by, they care about lost revenue."
...which is exactly what I was saying

"KOTOR is going to take a big ass chunk out of their profit."
That remains to be seen. Obviously TOR's going to take several players and retain a decent percentage of them, but given that the game debuted all of a week ago it's a bit soon to be playing armchair analyst. We don't know if a majority of those players will head back to WoW, if TOR will deliver content regularly enough to retain those that do defect to it, if those people will ultimately enjoy TOR enough regardless, etc. A profit chunk will be taken, that much is unquestionable. The "big ass" part is up in the air.

Now then, everyone join me as I stick my big ass up in the air.

Alright, to be fair, that wasn't really "exactly what I was saying" (yes, I've been sitting here for a while pondering that) but I don't think Blizzard has any reason to panic unless the charts show a huge downturn in WoW players paired with a remarkable uptick in TOR players. What I personally think is the more likely scenario is both companies will be tickled pink with their continuing (Blizzard)/emerging (Bioware) success and will spin that in their PR. There, I think I said what I wanted to.

"More than 2 billion NPCs have been killed in the eight days since launch as well, which is quite the virtual genocide."

An probably 1.5 billion of those are the rakghouls on Taris. Holy jeez I thought I'd never stop getting quests to kill those.

@makoto99 At least Taris doesn't cause your computer to freeze up like it did in the final beta build and dring early access.

I've logged a good chunk of time in the game (recently unlocked my legacy) and I can say if you like BioWare RPGs, you'll enjoy this one as well. I'm less convinced on its longevity--much will depend on their ability to push out a good stream of new content given it's so story driven.

We shall see, I hope for the best!

I've never had a game like this (mmorpg?) but I'm interested in it because its star wars. Can someone explain in simple terms how it works? Do you have quests to gain xp and weapons? Is there team play? Can you get in a fight with another player and have your character permanently die? Thanks

@BrianZeluz

Yes, you get quests and kill monsters/enemies for xp like most RPGs. There is team play, but you don't have to do any of that if you don't want to. Each class (there are four classes for each side, eight total) has it's own storyline, and the quests involved in that storyline are designed to be done on your own. There are also special group quests and stories that you can do with a group, from two to four players. There is a cool group mechanic during story scenes that allows each player to try to affect the conversation/story if you are in some of those group areas.

You can fight other players either in the PVP battlegrounds (only 3 maps for right now) or out in the contested parts of the galaxy (if you are on a PVP server). You can't permanently die. If you die, all your equipment takes damage, which costs money to repair. You can resurrect at a medstation nearby or wait a little longer and have a medical probe resurrect you on the spot.

I highly recommend the game, especially if you enjoyed the KOTOR games. I've only done a little of the group stuff, because even though it's an MMO, I tend to shy away from grouping with random people. Still having a blast though.

@Psyclerk Unless you like grinding out levels by killing tons of mobs, some group play is best because story progression eventually outstrips soloable quest availability.

There were twice as many people during the beta because it was free! Also it allowed for people to get a free trial of sorts to see if they like it (and for someone like me who has never played an MMO it helped ease me into the genre). I have a feeling it will pick up soon, once people recover from their Christmas spending and have some disposable income again.

You can buy a physical copy of the game and install from dvd, and bypass Origin completely. You never have to install Origin to play or buy the game. I play the game every day, so I know.

The game is great. Too bad all the WoW burnouts feel compelled to bash it 24/7 because it doesn't "innovate" enough.

It's WoW with a Star Wars skin. I played the beta, so I am speaking from experience.

Conversations and companions are hardly enough over the standard experience to warrant the praise it's been getting by fanboys.
