You continue to be my favorite Joystiq writer. How about an "Ask JC" podcast?

I thought this article would never end. That's not necessarily a bad thing though - the more recommendations of obscure games there are, the heartier my backlog becomes. Keep it coming.

Woot Ghost Trick! That was a ton of fun! :D I don't regret that one.

Thanks for mentioning Yakuza 4, JC. I was worried I was the only one who liked it. It's not the best game I played all year, but it's certainly one of the most fun.

Man, I totally forgot about Yakuza 4! What's worse was that I had planned on starting, and then beating, the game before the year was out, but never got the chance because of a couple of really tough titles that I was working through. I would have to say that this is one of the better "Best of the Rest" lists yet.

Nice long list, glad to see a lot of games get mentioned. Too bad you don't rank them. There's so much here I haven't played that I don't even know where to start if I wanted to try one.

@(Unverified) Maybe not the best - but it's still an excellent game that everybody should play (and sadly, I expect you can get it pretty cheap...)

I'm half curious if any of JC's actual GOTY list made it into the final Joystiq list.

@Courtney

GOTY lists and "best of the rest" picks are separate, so if you see a game on a best of the rest list it's not going to be in the top 10.

@Courtney

From my understanding, that's not accurate. A Joystiq staffer submits a list of five games, ranked. Ludwig then tallies up every staffer's votes, and the top 10 scoring games are what make the 'stiq's Top 10 for the year.

So it's likely that there are some staffers who have a personal favorite or two that they put in their voting 5 that no one else picks. Like I wouldn't be surprised if Ghost Trick was JC's top 1 or 2 game of the year, as much as he has raved about it.

So some of the Best of the Rest lists are made up of games they tried to get into the Top 10, but didn't make it. It's mathematically possible that a staffer could fail to get any of his top 5 picks into the final list.

El Shaddai is awesome, but what the hell is up with those Darkness levels?! i miss one jump, die, have to sit through a long cutscene, then a credit roll, then get dumped to the main menu just so i can load a save and start all over again... grrr! :|

Super Mario 3D Land is pretty great, but the one thing that bugs me is fact that you just get so many 1-Ups all the time. I think by the time I got finished with the first world I was up to around 25 to 30 lives after starting with 3. Don't get me wrong, the level design and the game in general are amazing, but it just feels like it's giving me 1-ups at every opportunity so that there's never a risk of me seeing a Game Over screen.

@TRONdll

I dunno, does it really matter if they don't give you ton's of 1-ups? It's still the same with or without it, and it kind of servers as another point system. See how many lives you can rack up by the end of the game. I'm starting a new file soon too kind of compete with myself with a lower death count and a greater life count.

I don't this game is top 10 worthy, but great enough to be on this list.

not to be a kiss-ass, but i never knew that there was someone on staff with taste in games as awesome as this. JC is clearly my new favorite editor at Joystiq, now :D

i already have (and love) just about all of these games- and thanks for reminding me that i really need to pick up Solatorobo.

i just picked up Aliens Infestation yesterday, and i haven't gotten into it just yet, but i am certainly looking forward to it even more, now.

Shit, this is hella depressing. All these games are criminally overlooked; why is Ghost Trick allowed to appear in a "best of the rest"?

@Acosta02
I would have criminally overlooked Ghost Trick myself if I didn't give the full game a chance based on the recommendations of others.

Chapter 6 was the turning point after which I couldn't put it down because I just had to know how they were going to explain this new big twist, or what bigger twist was coming up next. Video game plots don't usually do that to me, but Shu Takumi's work is something else.

Maybe it would be less criminally overlooked if we could get people to play until that big twist in Chapter 6 and see if they can bring themselves to stop playing afterward, before it's all finished...

If I were important enough to make an internet Top 10 list, this would pretty much be it. Thanks for fighting the good fight JC and giving these great games the attention they deserve.

I thought Ghost Trick's little Web demo was intriguing, but it didn't really make me consider the game...until I got to play through the full version.

Holy crap, this is a game plot that actually kept me so hooked I couldn't put it down due to wanting to know what happened next on its rollercoaster ride of twists and turns. Everyone should play through it at some point...and try not to spoil anything, it's much better that way.

It even made me want to go through the entire Ace Attorney series just to see how good Shu Takumi is at writing plots. He never really lost his touch.

Some of the other games here are mentioned frequently in the gaming communities I hang out around that tend to favor cult classics, but others are ones I've never even heard of...and if there's something I like finding out about, it's overlooked, underappreciated games.

El Shaddai is my Sleeper Hit of 2011. The demo does it no justice.. Though repetitive and the platforming stupid frustrating at times, the visuals, sounds and characters come together nicely. Once though of as a $20.00 game IMO, I gotta say it's worth the $64.00, -even though you can get it for around $20.00 new right now.

@ilduce620

How about looking up words above your reading level before calling a writer out? To founder is to become wrecked; to fail utterly. "The project foundered because public support was lacking."

I think Ghost Trick also had some distribution issues as well. I had a hell of a time trying to get my hands on a copy of it earlier this year. I was persistant, but I bet a lot of people gave up. If you didn't pre-order it you pretty much didn't get it (even if you did my local EB Games said they didn't get enough to fulfil pre-orders). Good word of mouth is unfortunately useless when you can't actually buy it.
