All the more reason for me to not keep my bank card on record with XBL.

Or to maybe just pay more attention to what you're doing. Then again, I managed to somehow save over my Gears 3 game the other night so I guess I can't talk.

Or maybe just wait till you get to your console to buy the item. Not like you're going to be able to play it without your console anyway.

@Dizazter

Sometimes queuing it up on the PC is just more convenient. Trying to redeem cards for MS points is also easier with a PC's keyboard than a controller on the console.

After my XBL account was hijacked once and someone went on a spending spree, I'm not really inclined to store my credit card info on Microsoft's system.

@Dizazter I've queued up downloading on xbox.com when not at home and asked my girlfriend to turn on the 360 (automatic sign in) and then turn it off 5 minutes later (background downloading). Everything is waiting for me when I get home and turn it back on. Even if I am home, following a link to and searching xbox.com is much easier than using the console.

If you haven't learned to read every button before you click, you haven't been buying things on the internet for very long. I'm looking at you, Amazon, and the 'One click to buy' button.

Ok, I can see the problem with that. I haven't run into this issue personally.

Maybe the button is too small and it really says 'Try not to Buy'

According to the GB article, it always says "Confirm Purchase", even when you are getting a demo, free content or buying something. So even reading won't help.

You can shut that off, not to mention you can cancel any order you make instantly on Amazon.

@Courtney It always says Confirm Purchase, but it also always lists how many points you're about to spend, and shows 0 when you're downloading a demo. It's shitty, yeah, but reading still negates the issue.

@Dr Do you read it every single time you make a purchase?

Because if not all they have to do is decide to switch their buttons around during a console update and people will wind up making mistakes.

Why would I ignore a screen with such poorly worded buttons? If I'm clicking on "Confirm Purchase" to download a demo, I'm going to make damn sure the "purchase" is zero points.

why wouldn't you look everytime, especially when money is involved? everytime i make a purchase/download, either through the browser or the dashboard, i check to see what i'm being charged. same goes for if i'm at the store. i can't tell you how many times i've been overcharged at the store for something and caught it.

I was going to ask you why his writing should be criticized, but then I read the source article. That is a really awkwardly written piece. He buried the lead, uses passive voice in his opening sentences, and gave the reader common knowledge information before getting to the important stuff.

Plus the headline is pretty awful. There would be dozens of better ways to handle a headline in that story.

I've had a few issues similar to this with XBL and Xbox.com. Where I click on one thing, it asks me to sign in (again!), and the next thing I see is either completely unrelated to my original request, is the original homepage and I must continually sign in over and over again endlessly (most common), or it processes my request as if I had chosen something else (kind of like this example - except without unintentionally buying anything).

I wouldn't say this stuff is too common since I don't go on Xbox.com that much anymore for purchases or download queues and such but I would say that this kind of issue is in line with a lot of their other stuff.

So it takes a big site to report on the "bug" for them to start pretending they're fixing it. I'm sure a lot of people who fell for this "mistake in coding" will be very happy to hear that since they can't get their points back because Microsoft doesn't do refunds on downloads even if you never downloaded the game you accidentally bought.

Is funny because if this was a PSN issue, joystiq would normally write negative things and put it like an ultimate issue of death but because is an issue with xbox they put it so sweet and like nothing happened jajaja this website is so inconsistent.

No, he is kinda right. If Nintendo was experiencing this problem, people would be saying horrid things about Nintendo's service. "I'm never buying from them again", "Nintendo sucks", "This is why XBL and PSN is better", etc. Not to mention Joystiq writers tend to be overdramatic just to amp up it's readers. Instigating unneccessary drama.

Also I'm sure none of us can deny it, this site is biased torwards certain brands and whatnot. (kinda like how engadget is)

You're right. Come on Joystiq writers, when will you completely eliminate your personal preferences from your articles? Don't you know that competent and trustworthy journalism is entirely free of subjectivity? The lack of professionalism exhibited here is staggering.

Are you guys really that daft? While I do agree that at times there does seem to be a little bias but this article isn't doing anything other than reporting what Giant Bomb has already looked into (in case you didn't know or care to click on the SOURCE link).

Also, just a few days ago Joystiq posted this editorial:

http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/04/xbox-live-fifa-hack-concerns-continue-to-escalate-microsoft-s/

To think that there is a "bias" happening here is ridiculous.

Joystiq was also one of the bigger rabble-rousers when that second round of Xbox failures started happening, pushing for MS to acknowledge the issue and include it under extended warranty.

Totallyyyyyyy.
Just check the comments for the fifa hack, everyone there giving advice, saying how many time they have been robbed while paying for xbox live and all, no one blaming microsoft.
PSN gets hacked, personal info compromised (the same you find in phone directories), everyone blames Sony to death.
No credit cards from PSN have been used as of today.

Ironic, isn't it?

People aren't aren't angry with Sony on what happened (not entirely), they are more angry at how Sony handled the situation. Something about waiting to tell consumers (a full week) that their network was hacked and consumer data was compromised.

Alright, they waited 1 week to do so;
In return, they ofered identity theft protection and free games.
Now;
How much time did microsoft spent while waiting to accept the fact that their machines could fail due to a bad design?
Heck!!! they even tried to cover it (see E74).
Have they issued a official statement about the FIFA hack?
or about this?
And remember you pay 60 buck per year for this.

I've had a few incidents with my kids where my card is saved to my account and if my Xbox is on and at the dashboard, if they just press "a" a bunch of times they'll buy whatever's currently being advertised. I've probably spent $120 or so now on random shit. My fault for leaving the card saved on there at first but the other time Xbox was in the process of refunding me for something and I had to leave the card on the account so that could refund to it and it happened. So very convenient that you can buy anything that is listed by simply pressing "a" over and over.

To be clear they bought:
COD: BLOPS full game (hate COD since they started rehashing it)
Sonic Free Riders full game (i have Kinect but still haven't bothered to actually download this)
A bunch of microsoft points once (I could at least use those for something I wanted)
