Bethesda did work on these guys...
I would have welcomed a Fallout MMO, but I'm really interested in a Fallout 4. Hopefully, Interplay makes it through this... somehow.

@Special Agent Steve I swear I'm not trying to troll here, but nostalgia aside, is there any reason for Interplay to continue to exist as a company? It seemed like the Fallout MMO was their one remaining project that might do anything at all for them.

@Prakras TCys

They have had:

Battlechess, Clayfighter, Dark Alliance, Descent, Earthworm Jim, Freespace, Giants, Messiah, MDK, Run Like Hell and Sacrifice.

Out of all of those, the only one I ever played and loved was MDK.

@Special Agent Steve the thing is interplay was not the true Dev house no one from black isles is even there anymore Bethesda was closer to the original black isles studio by letting Obsidian create new Vegas. I think an mmo is the wrong way to go with fallout anyway maybe a close number of players say 2-8 may work in a extra large game world but no more. who wants there favorite merchant/npc being groin shotted when they get back to town sell there hoard

While i think a MMO is not something fallout should do, i do think Bethesda deserves the name of fallout more than interplay, they gave us an amazing game, and after all the great work they did with Skyrim i´m sure the next fallout game is going to be awesome.

It's unfortunate that Interplay has lost one of the IPs they created, but the people who dreamed up Fallout are no longer in Interplay anyway, and the company is nearly bankrupt. At least Bethesda has the resources to keep the series going.

This gets mentioned repeatedly in relation to this topic, but it bears repeating. The Interplay we remember from the past has little, if any, relation to the company involved in this settlement.

Brian Fargo is currently with inXile Entertainment, Tim Cain is working with Obsidian Entertainment, Rebecca Heineman is with Sony, etc.

The often mentioned Fallout MMO developed by the current Interplay would likely bear little resemblance to the early Fallout games, or even the more current Bethesda games.

As such, I feel this settlement is for the best. I loved the original Interplay games, and even enjoyed the more recent iteration of the franchise. However, any MMO developed by what is in name only Interplay, would likely only result in disappointment for any fans of the series.

Lost? They sold it. Did you not read the article? They sold the rights, then had some Fallout trademarks granted to them. Under the condition that they would acquire the 30million to fund it and start production by April 2009. They failed to do either. Then failed to honor the contract by returning the license since they branched the contract.

In other words, they had their chance and blew it. They did get 2million for their trouble. Or for doing nothing.

All this and people still want to see them as a victim? Gamers...never cease to amaze.

@HaVoK308 Thanks for that history reminder/clarification.

That is a weird contractual agreement (the "we will get something on the table for an MMO by 2009"). Is that something that Bethesda forced upon them when they acquired the regular Fallout series rights?

From what I read... they never lost Fallout...they (or someone who controlled Interplay) sold it to Bethesda and in return, Bethesda sold them a license to create another game.

something tells me that Interplay probably didn't even have much as far as a Fallout MMO in the first place. just because they fabricated a few screenshot concepts to "prove" they were working on a game means nothing. they were merely trying to cover their tracks.

Honestly, I hope Bethesda keeps supporting those titles and perhaps even expands support (the mac versions aren't currently supported by anyone and err...they currently don't run on newer macs very well as a result). The screen resolutions of the old games haven't been converted to work with the newer displays on that platform (GOG versions run ok under win7 though).

The first fallout game is just screaming for a re-port that supports iPad or any other pad touch controls. 2nd one as well.

I may catch **** for saying this, but I'm glad Bethesda won. I would say differently if Interplay were actually working on a Fallout MMO, but they weren't doing anything at all. Those concept art shots and their website for the game, they were probably just made spur of the moment when Bethesda accused them of not working on the MMO and Interplay whipped them up real fast just to get Bethesda to back off, and nothing more.

Either Bethesda should make the Fallout MMO, or the former Black Isle Studios guys who are now with Obsidian should. Interplay can take a hike.

I'm not entirely sure whether Interplay had actually begun work on the game, but do they have to give all code related to the project over to Bethesda or just the assets that would distinguish it as a Fallout game?

Basically could they re-skin the work they have done up to this point and still be allowed to release it ?

"Interplay" didn't make anything. They were just a publisher entity and still are, although now a very shady one.

Brian Fargo(And as you can guess also related to the founder of Wells Fargo), founder of Interplay, was involved in the classic Wasteland true but that was a fairly long time before Fallout and when FO was created it was under a yet not named studio(Later Black Isle) who was able to make it due to the lack of corporate oversight in the first place(Which FO 2 did get, and suffered from)

Zenimax's/Bethesda Softwork's is fine and Skyrim is an improvement but FO 3 was a downer. I hope they live up to their Daggerfall potential. A Fallout MMO however would be made by Zenimax's new MMO branch, not BGS.

I would of preferred Brian Fargo's InXile to have the Fallout IP but whatever. Obsidian not so much, but they have Tim Cain now for a time. And he's basically the "father/creator" of FO not counting Feargus's Wasteland influence.

In the end I'm glad Interplay doesn't have FO to milk it. If Fallout 3 was a horror aside from a fully explorable 3D world, their work would of been a sure-felt disaster in many peoples eyes akin to a nuclear explosion in your head.

It's too bad now people automatically pin the talent of Black Isle to the once public company behemoth Interplay. Two very different groups. And one of them are low-down money grubbing scum bags aside from Brian who founded InXile later on.

How did Fallout 2 suffer from corporate oversight?

And what's wrong with 3? I just know that the people who really liked the originals felt that the same humor in Fallout 1,2 didn't carry over properly to 3.

Did having Obsidian on F:NV help at all?

Fact is, that MMO probably would of been crap if it was ever released. And even if it was decent, with the state of todays MMO market, it would of had to go free 2 play after 6 months and then been shut down shortly after.

This is so true. Interplay is out of touch and Masthead has yet to prove they can handle a single game title, much less an MMO. This is probably why they haven't revealed any information on it - their work is probably still shoddy as hell and/or they haven't gotten anything off the ground.

Honestly, the game probably would have had a harder time staying afloat than Realtime Worlds' APB release.

They leveraged a bit of development work into a couple of mil, good for them I guess.

I doubt Beth will ever do such a game as the ROI is too much of a gamble. They just didn't want something lame coming out and damaging the value of the IP. You need a lot of money and a lot of guts to put out a quality MMO these days.

Suffices to say, that was an Obsidian title. Bethesda merely published it. Personally, I liked both, though New Vegas could have had a more... Vegas feel to it. Obsidian's version of the Strip is... sad.
