Is there a way to find out what the sales/profit is for the consoles after they are bought?

Basically what I'm saying is even though PS3 is about even with Xbox world-wide which one is moving more disc games, downloadable games, VOD, etc and providing more profit after he initial console purchase

Steve Ballmer explicitly stated that the Xbox 360 was the best selling console WORLDWIDE for the year 2011. This is being reported across the interwebs.

@IridescentNova 3 year warranty. If you bought a 360 after yours crapped out, it's your stupidity. Don't try to play down sales by claiming bs "reasons". That's just like saying "Oh I wonderz how much ps3 salez r cause of blueray lolololzol"

...But both of those reasons are legitimate.
As far as I remember, Microsoft didn't offer a 3 year warranty on the 360 for several years after it came out, so saying that "you're an idiot if you purchased another 360 cause of the 3 year warranty!" isn't exactly reality. There was a large period of time when it was a legitimate idea to purchase another 360 when your old one died because the warranty was shit and it would have cost you X amount of dollars to get a second hand refurb from Microsoft.

Your other statement, saying it's not legitimate to say that you cant count sales based on the PS3's bluray drive is also kind of stupid. For a long time after the PS3 came out it was one of the cheapest Bluray players on the market. A lot of people purchased it for that, with games being second in their mind. Just like how a lot of parents purchased Wii's because of Wii Fit, or people purchased an Xbox because of the Kinect or whatever. You can't say a purchase doesn't count just because it wasn't for gaming.

@jtrjuwrue5iiejie5ijeie3i5

Your statement about the xbox warranties is completely false. The release of the original model was on November 16th, 2005 (NA Only). Those models came with a free 1 year warranty. The earliest a warranty could have run out was November 16th, 2006 (obviously), but then on July 5th, 2007 they announced the jump from 1 year to 3 years. Anybody whose warranty was expired, it would automatically renew until the 3 years was up. Also anybody who paid for a repair was automatically reimbursed. So your to your statement of several years (1 year 8 months, only 8 months with some xbox not covered under a warranty) is way off.

That number has to be skewed a little bit. I know for sure that I bought a slim and traded in my old arcade version. Would those numbers include me twice? What about all the other people that got RROD? I know my friend had to buy a new one cause it was out of warranty.

Everyone is saying those numbers HAVE to be skewed and I say so what? It still means the Xbox 360 has been successful even if those numbers are liberal. A purchased console twice still is a purchased console. But in any case, the ps3 and wii have all been successful. It's a good time to be a gamer. I wish people would quit concerning themselves with "sales" because they read into it way too much.

@IridescentNova It's only of anecdotal value to know. I bought a second and third because I was a happy customer. I use several 360's as STB's for Uverse and I couldn't be happier with them. They're the best viewing experience you can get on Uverse (the software is super snappy vs. a regular stb), give me access to all my other media and save me $300 per year in box rental fees, not to mention the games and other stuff. As I find the right deals I'll replace every box except my main DVR with them. It's a great system and a great value and has earned its success.

@Tristan77 According to Sony, at the end of Q2 of 2011 they have sold 55.5 million PS3s. I don't see how they have sold 10 million units between October 1st and January 1st and we haven't heard anything about it.

Regardless of who is in the lead, I find it strange that Sony rarely gives updates on their worldwide sales.

I have a PS3, but most people that I know have a 360. For the majority of them, the reason for preferring 360 is because it's easier to pirate games on it.

Almost all my friends I can think of have bought two 360's and a couple of us just because of extra features in the slim. It sounds like this is more common than I thought.

Okay, I gotta be honest, the biggest reason I got a new one was because my old controller was dying... And wireless I suppose.

Except it was only a few months after the rrod became a problem that they started offering the warranty. No more than 6 months tops. And, it was cheaper to pay them to fix your rrod'd box than it was to go out and pay retail for a new one. Regardless, this fanboy shit is dumb both consoles are good it just depends on what you want out of it and which one you prefer. Now, can we stop te flame war and all be friends? Jk I know that will never happen as long as there is insecure people on the Internet who need to prove they're better than everyone.

@the angry pro consumer gaming ga except its not really that douchey and closer to the truth than you'd like to admit. The US accounts for the majority of Sony and microsofts sales. We are their biggest source of revenue and their main target audience wise. Look at the majority of games released on both consoles...they're targeted at the US. Hell, hasn't it been an issue here lately with japanises devs focusing more and more on games that appeal to the western audience? Yeah it's a typical American douchey thing to state the obvious truth huh? I'm not claiming we are some how better than the rest of the world just that obviously the American market is the biggest gaming market and that Sony and Microsoft and most game devs/publishers are focused on us.

I love how the Sony fan boys make up the majority of the comments on Xbox sales and vice versa.. Mi's well throw my hat in the ring and state that all of this is mostly pointless. Because despite install base the real bread winner for any major console is software and micro transactions.. And well you know how that story goes.. This generation and this year in no way shape or form will belong to Sony.. The fanboys can spin any statistic any way they want to perk themselves up when need be, but it just can't happen.. (I'm a multi-console neutral party, swearz)

It's no surprise the Kinect hasn't done nearly as well this year in comparison to the 2010 holiday season. The hype has died down and, save for a few dance games, the Kinect has no must-have titles or apps to drive sales.

To all the freakazoids that are pointing out the Xbox 360's diminishing worldwide lead; let me post the numbers that really matter.

End of previous generations console life (PS2, Xbox, GC):
PS2 Marketshare: 76%
Xbox 13%

As of today:
Xbox 360 28.5%
PS3 27%

Market share change +/-
Xbox Brand +16%
Playstation Brand -49%

The numbers I posted above will be taught in business classes for years to come. Even if the PS3 catches up to the Xbox 360 in sales before the release of the next consoles. They still have own one of the largest and most monumental drop offs in the history of consumer electronics. I guess Sony fanboys will take any victory they can get after being cheerleaders for one of the worst corporate and brand mismanagement ever.

I was going to post a long comment on my views of this gen, but you have pretty much summed it up. I just through this in; I believe the PS3 will end up outselling the 360 when all is said and done this generation, but there is no denying Sony didn't perform as well as they probably should have, which is evident in their drop in marketshare.

I feel MS are primed to become the top dog next gen with all the foundations they are putting into place at the end of this gen, and Sony are going to be the underdogs. But Sony blew away the competition once already, they can surely do it again.

@eNriqeu Building a better gaming system for less money seems like a pretty good strategy. Being able to get it out the door a year ahead of the competition on top of it is flat-out brilliant. Too bad, so sad that you're a butt-hurt Sony boy.

@killr0y their 1 year head start came at a big price. Their systems were defective all the way up until the slim (yes I've owned several generations of 360's). You're praising MS because they built a better gaming system for cheaper. You might as well praise Sony for the same exact thing because that is what they did for Playstation 1 and 2 as well as the PSP and Vita. PS3 is subjective and the sales reflect that. I personally think the PS3 is a better package deal. They are more stable, better 1st party, free online, better media capabilities, etc.

The Xbox 360 was released Nov 2005, the warranty was extended from one year to three years in July 2007. So only way that scenario is valid is if you bought the console within the first 9 months of its launch, and your Xbox died within a small window of a few months just after a year but before the warranty extension took effect. Which, btw, was retroactive to all consoles.
