I was working on an arcade cabinet with detachable two player fightstick, I was pretty far on the project but it kind of got put aside, I'm not the best carpenter and issues were starting to frustrate me

I went with this angled design that was looking far better than a box, but I made several mistakes and didnt have the proper cutting tools to get good angles, I kludged it together but was annoyed and gave up for then

I need to get back and finish the project, I had done some good work

This sounds awesome. Despite having no desire to attempt the same myself, I eagerly look forward to the rest of this series.

Now THAT'S an interesting article. Would love to see more first-hand building stuff like this on Joystiq.

I built a custom arcade cabinet last year. I'm still working on finishing the asthetics, but I went with Sanwa sticks, and I have trouble using anything else now. I went to California Extreme arcade expo this year, and played a bunch of oldschool games that inspired me to play the cabinet, and I was surprised at how tight some of those controllers were, and I'm pretty sure they were authentic.

I used a GPWiz 40 for my PCB, but I'm very tempted to hack some 360 controllers and tie in those controls, as well, as I would love to play some of the great remakes that exist on the 360.

I really just wish that Capcom would get off their highhorse regarding PC gaming, and continue to release their fighters there, as the cabinet is really where I want to be playing MvC3. There is only so much SFIV I can take on this thing.

@laggerific

Also, an arcade cabinet is a great way to learn how to do stuff. I hadn't touched a power tool in 20 years, since my 8th grade shop class, and by the end, I was using a table saw, router, and jigsaw with relative ease.

Two sites I would highly recommend when doing this are:

forum.arcadecontrols.com/

and

http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick.html

They were immeasurably helpful, and slagcoin was a great place to start when trying to figure out exactly what type of Control Panel you might want to make.

@laggerific I bought a second PS3 to put into my unfinished cabinet with a USB and video switch to swap between PS3 and PC play using the same controllers

so once my cabinet is finally done I can instantly switch between PS3 fighters and old school PC games

Good luck with the custom fightstick. I can't wait to see the result. I live pretty close to Arcade UFO but haven't gone in a long time. If I can find a way to stop playing Gears of War 3 and get back into SSFIV, I'll surely go back.

I'm still playing on a Madcatz SE stick with Sanwa parts and custom artwork. It works and looks great!

Neato stuff! I've done a little bit of fightstick modding myself (taking an all-SANWA Hori stick and modding it by swapping the ball-top for a bat-top, and the 4-way gate for an 8-way) but nothing this extensive. This should be instructive.

Nothing to be ashamed of. You should off some good skills and were competitive against an elite tournament player. I think just going out and competing in front of others can be overwhelming. Fantastic article, keep it up.

Of course you won, I would lose too to someone who just spams the fans with Kitana. No different than Hadouken spamming in SFIV. Get out.

I didn't watch the video, but didn't he say he lost in the article. I don't think he was bragging, he was just saying he lost because he was used to a crappy joystick.

@adr916 Sadly dealing with LL has gone pretty sour, this new "pre order" crap they pull is offputting, along with how unresponsive they've become to canceling peoples orders.

There's a couple things I really think you should've mentioned here that you just sorta skipped. Like, for instance, the stick you'll end up creating will actually just be a slightly inferior version of the Eight Arc Fusion... and I reckon what you're doing will cost more money... or, at least, an ass load of effort.

Eight Arc Fusion retails at $180, comes loaded with Sanwa parts (although I've read that you can request whatever custom parts set and faceplate artwork you want from them) AND it's been proven in technical tests that their PCB responds noticeably faster than the cthulu.

It's not that I'm knocking your desire to build a custom stick here, I think you might just be pushing some readers without a knowledge base in the wrong direction. Even on streams I very, VERY rarely see a pro with a "custom" stick like you are building. The community standard is probably a PS3 Madcatz TE Fightstick. Why? Evo runs on PS3s, and Sanwa parts are Sanwa parts. TE's can also frequently be found as cheaply as $120 (I purchased a dual modded TE on the SRK forums for just $140 last month!)

One thing I do see is custom faceplates every now and then. Especially on the TE, since it's remarkably easy to just get a clear plexy and a custom artwork print out.. Anyway, I think any number of these things would be good to mention to your readers that might see this and think they need to go out back and chop some wood before they can have a quality stick. I might have also been nice to mention the primary difference between Sanwa and Seimitsu, as well as the fact that Sanwa ALSO makes a bat top (and that it's I-can't-believe-it's-not-butter smooth.) If you're going to be an authority on the topic, please be responsible enough to be more thorough, or next time just leave it in the capable hands of the people at SRK and I Play Winner.

In fact, just curious, why did you decide to go all Bob Evans and make this bastard from scratch? I was under the impression that sticks like that died after Madcatz started provide real, quality instruments. Building your own stick was kind of a staple back in the 90's before their was a quality retail option, but now it's kind of an esoteric luxury that the pros don't even generally practice or encourage.

Custom sticks never died. In fact, a quick glance at Shoryuken's Tech Talk forum will show that the market/community for them is thriving more than ever. There's just so much more you can do with a custom if you're willing to spend (I have a custom Arthong acrylic that comes with LED lit buttons and will play on just about any console, PS3, PC, X360, DreamCast, Saturn, you name it).

Then there's the amount of craftsmanship put into these things. Some of the customs by the top builders can be considered works of art on their own. Detailed paint jobs that rival those seen on custom cars, wood finishes that you'd expect to see on high end furniture. Custom sticks are now at the point where they can be seen as genuine luxury goods based on the craftsmanship alone (which justified the price on some of these things - a 2 player Voltech using rare amboyna burl hardwood recently went for over $1000).

Also, top players do play on customs. Project Giantsword provided the custom joysticks used by Clockw0rk and Mike Ross. Laugh (the Korean player) plays on his own custom line (the eTokki OMNI).

This is awesome. I have actually wanted to build something like this for about 5 months but have never been very confident in the parts I wanted to where to order them from. Now, I will have a credible source and someone to point me in the right direction for things like this.

All I want is to be able to have the same kind of stick as my neo geo pocket. I was playing Capcom .vs SNK today and I'm still amazed that no one else has copied that stick for a portable or anything really. It's that amazing.

Nice post, but a few things.

Happ buttons are not 30mm, they're 28mm. They also require a much taller stick to install into.

Happ is no longer a quality company, and uses cheap Chinese parts (like the switch from Cherry switches to eswitch or whatever they're using). If you want parts that have that old American feel- go with IL parts, much better quality than the new Happ.

There is a noticeable difference between all three brands of sticks and buttons, Sanwa is going to have the softest buttons, followed by Seimitsu, followed by American buttons, sticks have more variety of differences (Shoryukens TechTalk is a good place to check)

Be careful ordering from Lizardlick, if you order something thats backordered be prepared for an incredibly long wait, and unresponsive support about the issue, some cases up to six months waiting with no response.

And please stop calling Arcade Sticks "Fight Sticks". They're not just for Fighting games.

Thank you. I laughed when he said Happs was quality. My friends and I often use Happs as an adj. to describe terrible quality.

Agreed on calling them arcade sticks instead of fight sticks, if only for two reasons. First, “fight stick” sounds grammatically awful. Second, it makes me want to say “the first rule of fight stick is: don’t talk about fight stick” and people think way too highly of that movie.

Awesome! I just noticed this article and it's right when I'm really starting to get into fighting games, like, for real this time >.> I don't even have a cheapo stick to use, so my execution using one is absolute gutter trash.

A great article. Too bad I'm more capable with a soldering iron than I am with wood and nails and what not. I could probably pull it off but I'm so picky that I'd probably just end up making a mess. Maybe I'll look into a pre-made case from somewhere; perhaps one that I can tweak the design of somehow. I'd love to build an arcade stick for my many Dreamcast fighters.
