@jeanmalkav these people are probably too stupid to know the diference between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, its like comparing New York and Los Angeles... São Paulo is the bigest, richest and most populated city in South America, its a business city and not a beach like Rio, famous for tourism.

@lionmaruu

Yeah, you have to drive all the way to Santos, São Vicente, Guarujá, you know, somewhere in Baixada Santista, before you get to the beaches if you are in São Paulo. That's like a solid hour of driving. In Rio de Janeiro, the beaches are pretty much just right there. I wonder if those guys were in the right city?

Strange how game developers and Hollywood just love using the miserably poor ghettos of Brazil as a fun little backdrop to have shootouts in but nothing more.

"To truly get a feel for the land and its society." So, yeah, to the black market!(?)

There's nothing more to Brazil other than thugs, ghettos, and uh,....the black market, apparently..

@Viriathus That's where the game is set, so that's where they went! A game that involves that dark side of society certainly wouldn't be set in the posh hotels & beautiful beaches! It's just a matter of utility, they weren't simply on vacation.

@Viriathus Brazil is in the spotlight now because with most of the other countries economies going to shit, we keep growing, but we have also bad press and not without guilt, we have lot of economic disparity and I dare say that our politicians and public employees -police also- are the most corrupt of the world, I have pride AND shame for being Brazilian at this moment, I love my country but I hate how its administrated and the people who keep going with this corruption.

BUT people likes to say shit without knowing things, this article has so few words and most of the references of Brazil are so wrong that's incredible...

@Dukk420 Yeah but basically every game and movie ever made that takes place in Brazil always focuses on the negative aspects only.

It's like they think "hey let's make our game take place in hell on earth...any ideas, guys..? Um, Yeah! Brazil...BUT...in the slums!"

It's kind of selective if you ask me. Why not make it take place in an atrocious looking American ghetto that only shows all of the negative aspects of this country? Probably because that would be insulting to us since most of the poor in the U.S. are black or people of color, that would make them the villains mostly. But that's not an issue because Brazil is supposed to be poor and awful all the time for "gritty" entertainment purposes. Plus, although the villains will mostly be black anyways they're not African-American....they're black Brazilians, which somehow makes it less racist.

@lionmaruu Many of the negative things you mentioned can also apply to the U.S.

For example, we are now the largest banana republic in the world by far. And that was a term that we originally invented for Brazil.

Our only two political parties are really two different factions of the business party and our current president just got rid of due process. Corruption and crony capitalism go hand in hand.

Just because popular films and other media don't criticize the U.S. the the same way developed countries criticize developing ones doesn't mean very high level corruption doesn't exist in the 1st world.

Not to point out the obvious, but.... this is a Rockstar game. Ever heard of another game series they make? It's called Grand Theft Auto. Almost all the entries in that series are set in America. Maybe you should try it. :)

@Viriathus: This reminds me of the ignorant a-holes in charge of that "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" flick that portrayed Bogota City like some kind of a jungle with bullets flying everywere and explosions.

True, but that's only GTA and the U.S. is portrayed in many different ways across the media, sometimes positively and sometimes not so much.

Brazil is portrayed as a ghetto more than 99 percent of the time across all forms of entertainment.

its nice that they're talking about the production of their games in a different way to the usual game hype, but with the amount of money this is expected to make, it would be pretty strange if they didn't visit where the game is set...
