Not sold on Mass Effect 3 or Kinect. I didn't like the changes to ME2, don't like Origin, and don't like Kinect. It sounds like they are taking Mass Effect even farther away from what I loves about the original and making it into something for everyone, and not something for me. I realize I'm in the minority, but when I heard you can play Mass Effect 3 without even role-playing I simply lost interest.

It's a toggled setting. Do you also lose interest knowing that somebody somewhere is playing with blocky shadows or, God forbid, no shadows at all? Total immersion breaker.

But you can play it the way you want. They're just giving more options to appeal to a wider audience. I don't see the problem as long as you can still play the game the way you want to play it. What's wrong with trying to give the player more options? If you can still play it with a more role-playing focus, who cares about how anyone else plays it.

It may suck to hear it, but video games ARE made for everyone, not just for you. They want to sell as many copies as possible.

Without even roleplaying? I'm not sure what that means, in this context. Mass Effect 3 seems like it will allow as much roleplaying as the other entries in the franchise (which is to say: moral choices of varying sizes, and that's all). I would argue, given that premise, that Mass Effect was never really "for you," but maybe you used to like it. The franchise has always been about meshing RPG progression with action-oriented design, and in that sense (especially given the current trend of cramming RPG elements into everything) it has always been Third-Person-Shooter first, RPG second.

And at least Kinect isn't *required* for anything, which was my fear. Better to have it optional than shoehorned into some abjectly terrible mechanic.

Yeah. There is an option to play the game just for the action, where all of the RPG elements are chosen for you. I suppose you just watch it like a movie.

Like I said, I realize I'm in the minority, but I had no idea I'd be downvoted so harshly for having my own opinion. It isn't like I'm telling people here what to enjoy. It just isn't for me.

Easy fix. Don't play with Kinect and find "other ways" to obtain the game and bypass Origin. I won't let that spyware infested pile of crap on my computer and if EA want my money, they'll re-instate Steam support.

Until then, any PC EA games i get that aren't on Steam, i won't be paying for them.

The funny thing about Joystiq's community is that is Kamalot were discussing something Wii related in regards to his post instead of Mass Effect, his comment would have 3 hearts right now and Uncle Jesse's would be the one with half a heart.

If Mass Effect 3 was a Wii game (lol, btw) it might be an issue. Since it's not, you might want to come down off of that cross and save the victimization complex for another thread.

@Kamalot No I agree with Kamalot. I like speech recognition in games, I think that's a great avenue to explore. But overall each Mass Effect seems drifting more towards a mindless action action rather than the neat strategy and exploration the first one had.

Hi my name is Kamalot and this is the first time I'm doing this online dating thing... teehee I'm sorry I'm just a bit shy.

So about me? Well um, I'm around 25 give or take 10 years. I'm still living at home but hey that's a great benefit because I don't have a high cost of living so I have a lot of disposable income!

About my personality .. well um... there's not much to say... I don't like change. I like to keep things the way they are... oh and I also don't like other human beings, people breathing my air. I don't like buying any product because it would mean brand loyalty. I hate pets, food, entertainment, fun, socializing, reading, running and just about anything that requires me to do anything.

Yeah, that's basically about me ... hope to hear back from you soon!

Neat strategy? Really? Was I missing something then? Because I saw next to no strategy in the game at all. It is what it is; a sci-fi RPG with moral choices. The combat was never 'hard' or even 'challenging.' Also, for folks who complain about 'playing their way' there's three modes you can set it to: Action (less dialogue, more action), Story (more dialogue, easier combat), and Roleplaying (the full game experience - full action, full dialogue). Seriously, if you don't know if the ME franchise is 'right for you' by now, you're sort of hopeless.

As for me, I'll be playing ME3 in March and loving every second of it.

Given for all their streamlining hasn't really translated to a large uptick in sales while now being on more platforms than before, I think the ship has sailed on Mass Effect being a mass market game despite EA's wishes

@Kamalot So glad that the people that didn't like ME2 have nothing to do with making games... Of any kind. ME1 was a good game for it's time.. but it's damn near unplayable now. ME2 changed everything that needed to be changed and the people that bitch and whine about not being able to go in and choose custom armor or whatever else drive me nuts.

ME2 isn't just the better game, it's one of the best games out there IMHO.

Bring 2012's game of the year (ME3) on!

Eh, I would be more impressed if it wasn't for the fact that other games have done much more extensive voice commands on the 360 a long time ago, using nothing but a typical 360 headset.
Its just Microsoft trying to push the Kinect into more homes by hoping that attaching it to "hard core" titles will spur sales.

Okay, but if they don't trojan horse it into homes by shoehorning functionality into the hardcore games, then less people buy them and there's less reason to make more games for it and/or improve on the hardware. It's a necessary evil that will pay off a little further down the road.

@(Unverified) The Kinect implementaiton they show here is exactly the same as the stuff in HAWX and other games that use the headset. Except the mic being used is on the Kinect (and perhaps the voice recog software, I don't know how that works, but since the Xbox itself keep track of your speech if you so choose, a la Android phones, then that may be what sets it apart). None of those commands above look to have a movement component to them.

And it may very well work with the headset, has anyone asked or tried yet? You can use the Kinect for in-game voice chat, perhaps the other way around? I have to yell to get mine to hear me, that'll get annoying for my neighbors and gf in this game :/

It wont work with the headset. The Kinect features full voice recognition and decoding software in its SDK. By using the Kinect the developers don't have to create their own system for doing said actions. To make it work with a headset they would have to.

I wonder how this will work for those with foreign accents. Voice recognition has a pretty lousy track record in that aspect. Hell, even the less common American, British and Australian accents tend to run into trouble.

No no, I meant "less common accents that are spoken on the British Isles, the Australian continent or the territories of the United States of America." Stuff like Cockney, or the many variations of Welsh or Scottish. There's a lot more to Britain than RP.

@neosxtc They forget we "British" don't all sound the same, people 10 miles away sound a lot different, and then there's the Scots & Irish.. need a universal translator for some of those.. usually takes a few tries for my wp7 to get what I'm trying to ask it, usually end up having to correct it -_-

It's disappointing to me that we're just now getting voice commands and what not for games with Kinect. When Kinect first came out, shouting "Liara, attack!" would have seemed pretty novel as a starting point, but by now - releasing ME3 in 2012 - we should be able to yell "Open fire!" and have Kinect (and the game) understand us.

Oh well, I'm still going to give this an honest go, but I just thought that we'd be a lot further along at this point.

@Uncle Jesse It is what it is. It's not like there are a host of games doing better. A game designed from the ground up for this could/would probably allow for more natural speech patterns, but as is they had to keep it limited to make it work as well as it does. It's never going to be anything more than a word / phrase list though and as such you can't expect it to randomly understand the differences in how you, I and others choose to express certain commands.

I'm pretty sure the kinect fuctionality isn't designed to get people to buy a kinect, but more for giving people who buy ME3 and who already have a kinect an interesting use for it.

Looks like Kinect with Mass Effect could be okay.

I remember playing SOCOM on PS2 and having a lot of fun, but back then there were few commands and they were relatively simple (at least from what I remember). I remember saying "BRAVO: Fire" many times because it was easier than using the menu.

If it is easier to use Kinect commands than using the menu for ME3 then this could be a decent payoff. I wouldn't buy Kinect for it, but people who already have Kinect can enjoy. Though, I do wonder why there was no incentive to use headset commands. Too much extra programming involved?
