Gonna pick up like four copies. Hopefully more sales mean more space-flight sims.

As much as I love the space combat genre, I don't think it will see a rise in popularity any time soon. It is just too complicated for your average dumb downed console player of the current generation. People who play X3 Terran Conflict and enjoy it are not having the same kind of fun that the frat boys who play MW3/BF3 are having. People like me who enjoy some of the current space combat games (I'm a sucker for X3) like being in control of a massive fleet of ships while at the same time being able to personally control one and turn the tide in a battle. People who play games like MW3/BF3 just want to feel superior to the person on the other end of the connection. I used to play those kinds of games, but I got sick of the assholes in multiplayer ruining the experience for me and the repetition that comes from playing on the same map with the same objective over and over again.

I like the space combat genre (except for EVE Online which takes the complex nature that I like too far in the other direction) but I just don't see it catching on until devs start treating gamers like they have a brain and until gamers start justifying that belief....

Wing Commander/Freespace are much simpler though. Although I guess both had their moments where things weren't so straightforward. Going on torpedo runs and taking out subsystems I guess

@GuardianLegend2 I like that aspect of FreeSpace. A lot of space sims tend to be heavy on the "sim" side of things, in terms of micromanagement and economy, and while I understand fans who like that, it's not really my cup of tea. I prefer simpler arcade action and a good story and FreeSpace did both. SOL: Exodus seems to take after that model, so I'm more interested in it than other recent space sims.

I pretty much disagree. I don't remember Wing Commander being more complicated than 1. talk to characters on your ship bertween missions. 2. pick your ship and loadout. 3. fly around in space and blow stuff up.

Same with Colony Wars on PS1 among other games.

People love the Sci-fi genre and shooting big guns, and most people have an inherent fascination in space and what's beyond our own earth. I'm surprised this genre has been dead for so long. In the right hands it could be the next big genre explosion. But it probably won't happen, sadly.

I haven't played Wing Commander. I have mostly stuck to X3. I also have memories of playing TIE fighter on my mom's laptop years ago. X3 is fairly complicated what with the station building and the numerous different ships and modules. You have to set up trade routes, fill gaps in production in sectors and command fleets of ships to ward off hostiles--all in the same game. I remember being a little overwhelmed when I started playing. I got used to it and found that it was the perfect game to run a movie with in the second monitor.

I think the space sim genre is a case where the developers and certain fans death spiraled themselves out of the business. The games got more and more complicated, and when the business changed they refused to acknowledge that the games didn't NEED to be complicated.

Really, the controls needed for a space combat game are yaw/pitch, adjust throttle, fire guns, choose weapons, fire missle. You can fit all that on a gamepad, along with afterburners and some combination of choose power preset, lock target, give orders.

Personally, I want a space sim version of Battlefield 3. Choose from three or four basic fighters, choose your loadout and a couple perks, go.

I feel like it's the other way around. Space sims got too casual and alienated their fan base. Starlancer was way too simple, then Freelancer was a mouse game... i don't even think it had joystick support.

I think the companies tried to appeal to casuals, but casuals still didn't bite... and boom, everything fell apart.

Wing Commander 2 had moments where you were expected to slow down your torpedo bomber to a certain speed, then maintain a slow lock-on process for the torp. Then you were expected to jump from each of your ship's turrets in order to fend off enemy fighters. It was pretty awesome. But you had to know how to read a radar display in order to figure out which turret to jump to at that point. Not super complicated but I figure a bunch of people still had trouble with it.

I think WC3 and 4 made things simpler... and Prophecy even simpler.

Also I'm guessing a lot of gamers find the idea of aiming at rapidly moving targets to be more annoying than fun. In most FPS games nowadays, the enemies stay relatively still as they bunker down behind cover. Then they just pop and you can shoot them.

Freelancer remains my favorite space game.

It could've stood to take some things further, but as it is, it's still the most evenly balanced offering of exploration, customization and 0G dogfighting (although the default controls could hinder your use of momentum). Plus, it had a pretty enjoyable single player campaign

I've tried playing X3 repeatedly, and it always feels like all of the focus is put on the things I care about the least (resource/empire management), and totally bungles the things I like the most (exploration, presentation/world building, accomplishing anything through their UI).

I mean, I want to be part of an awesome spacefaring culture... Not a bunch of CG models pulled out of a late 90's copy of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, who are ever locked in a conflict with the Shlongs, I mean Phalluses, I mean Kha'ak... The sweaty, veiny Kha'ak.

I'll probably play SOL, but I'll still be left dreaming about that beautiful middle ground between the oppressive space empire sim and the fleeting thrills of the space fighter.

Keeping an eye on this. That capital ship reminds me of TCS Tiger's Claw.

well here's hoping that they have a great game there....after the FreeSpace series, there's just been nothing in comparison, if they can recreate the scope, size and excellent gameplay of that series with today's graphics, than this is a game to be played.

This game looks really promising, but this is the first I've heard of it. It's a shame that a classic spaceflight game gets almost no publicity, but everyone everywhere hypes the latest "walk down a hallway and shoot people" game. Hopefully this will be a surprise hit.

I used to love these games but I'm not sure how much I'd like their gameplay mechanics today. I'd probably still love the X-wing gameplay mechanics.. but Wing Commander/Freespace were very repetitive. I think when I was younger I was more tolerant of that, but nowadays... not so much.

So I hope SOL has something more to bring to the table than just Wing Commander style gameplay

I'd love to see a combined combat based system. Large capital ships with smaller boarding vessels. Boarding vessels can then attach to capital ships where you enter MW3/BF3 style combat. Meanwhile you have the larger ships battling it out. This would combine the best of both worlds.

I've been looking forward to this one since Joystiq first mentioned it. The game has come a long way over the months and I really look forward to playing it! We need more FreeSpace-style space combat games. :D

Sweet! I've been waiting for a well-crafted space epic like Colony Wars ever since, well, Colony Wars. I'm going to have to tip a bit of my 40 out for Psygnosis and check this game out!

This looks exciting. I feel like the last great same combat sim game was FreeSpace 2. It had a pretty good story, threw in a lot more mission types, had a few side missions that could only be obtained by completing or discovering objectives, 2 different (yet similar) endings, and really good voice acting, especially for the time. After that the space games started getting into the complex field of buying, trading, finding, building, and so on. I just really enjoyed hearing some good story, picking my ship and weapons, and going out and doing the mission.

So yeah, super excited for this.

Freespace 2 is definitely my favourite game ever. With space combat sims pretty much dead i welcome any new additions to the genre.

By the way UCS Atlas looks a lot like Kiev & Morzov from Starlancer.

I sort of miss how in WC1-2, X-wing and Tie Fighter, you actually saw your ship's cockpit, instead of just the HUD. Even if it was tougher to see, it gave the ships their own personalities. I htink with today's technology you could easily make a working 3D modeled cockpit that wouldn't be too obnoxious to fly in.

Any word on multiplayer in this game?
