Hyrulecraft: Ocarina of Time reproduced in Minecraft
35
We don't know if you guys are aware of this or not, but people really love Zelda games. Some people, in fact, love Zelda games so much that they've spent nine months completely rebuilding a Zelda game inside of a totally unrelated and entirely different game.
The Hyrulecraft project, which is currently in the middle of live public alpha testing, is a to-scale recreation of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time inside of Minecraft. As you can tell from the above trailer, Hyrulecraft an impressive display of devotion to the franchise, but the team responsible has far more ambitious plans. Ultimately, they want to make Hyrulecraft "a unique Minecraft MMO experience including quests, NPCs, dungeons, free build zones, guilds, and more," according to their website.
If cuboid reproductions of Nintendo 64 games really are your bag, baby, then hit the source link for information about how you can scope out the public alpha test and download the map for yourself.

Impossible!
...No, seriously. How are they managing to pull this off? Pretty remarkable.

Lots and lots and lots and lots of man hours, I suppose. Hey, a guy's gotta have a hobby.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

@Shadowbender There are ways to cheat and model things on a large scale easier than placing them brick by brick. But even if that's what they did (which is likely, since otherwise this would have taken way more time than it's worth), it's still pretty impressive.

I'm confused about minecraft. I've only ever played the ripoff games on XBLA. What is the point of them. It seemed like all you do is float around and pick at blocks and build blocks up.
Are there characters or enemies or a story? Or is it just building empty environments?

At night, the monsters come out. Zombies. Skeletons. Creepers. Endermen. Spiders.
There's also the exploration aspect. Dig down and find massive randomly generated underground caves, with treasure and numerous monsters.
Once you've amassed enough wealth to be able to craft a diamond pickaxe, you can build a frame out of obsidian and build a portal to the nether. This hellish world is step two on the path to "completion". Defeat powerful enemies to get interesting ingredients. Retreat to the surface world and begin your search for The End.
Level up by killing monsters, and use your levels to enchant your weapons and armour. Use rare materials to make potions as well. When you feel you have gathered enough, set out to find a stronghold. These dangerous underground dungeons can be seeked out by combining items that are hard to get.
Get to the end of a stronghold and you will find a damaged End portal. Use Eyes of the Ender to repair it (these are exceptionally hard to make) and step through the portal into the final area...

Problem is, nowhere does it say that you can build a portal, or how. You have to look on the mine craft wikipedia, which is a deal breaker for me, as it ruins the immersive game experience...

@eat it It's really not for everyone.
Although, some people catch onto it differently. I fell in love with it the second I saw a Let's Play on YouTube a year and a half ago. One of my buds fell in love with it after playing the alpha version on my computer. If you haven't likened to it by watching videos of it or actually playing the paid version of minecraft, chances are you won't like it.

Nintendo may have a few hesitations about the grand vision that is being built on their most beloved IP.
But the dedication to the source material is very impressive.

Very cool! Surprised they didn't show off Hyrule Lake or Gerudo Valley. And being a huge OoT fan, I couldn't help notice one small oversight; the archery game house in Kakiriko Village shouldn't have been fully constructed with the current time era they had going on. But I suppose that's being rather picky.

Dungeons too, or was that just a bit of the inside of the Deku Tree?
Looks amazing. When it's out of alpha, I'll have to download it. (Too lazy now.)

For some reason, reproducing Nintendo games in Minecraft seems quite easy to do. Now try to recreate Shenmue in Minecraft.

I totally agree. If you were to play through these levels you would get a serious headache. I much prefer anything officially from Nintendo.

I'd personally rather play the 2d OOT remake that stopped production years back, along with that 2d Metroid Prime. The concept of Minecraft is neat, but replecating games and often making them looking worse is not my cup of tea.

Maybe they could do a weird Zelda universe merge, where the Hyrule fields of OoT and TP are different parts of the same plain.
