Japanese hardware sales, January 9 - 15: Looking back edition

What with Resident Evil 6 being a real, honest-to-goodness thing now, we thought'd we'd take this opportunity to look back at the series and appreciate how far things have come since the olden days. For example, were you aware that the original Resident Evil was ported to the Game Boy Color, only for the project to be canceled and the port never released? What about the existence of the Tiger Game.com version of Resident Evil 2 seen above, which was actually released? Like, for humans?
Seriously, kids these days take their fancy graphics and cover systems for granted. Back in our day, all we had were horrible games, and sometimes they didn't even come out! And we were grateful!

I ... I can't even fathom the awfulness of the video above. I find it ironic (or ... something) that at 1:17, Leon's uniform looks like it says "RAD" instead of "R.P.D."
This is so not rad.

@The Pork I think at some points it actually says "MEW".

Wow - I forgot about that Tiger Electronics abomination.
I almost bought one of those - but thankfully my conscience kicked me in the head hard enough to erase that part of my short-term memory.
3DS is still rumbling along. Looks like Wii buyers are waiting for the next gen, as sales are pretty anemic.

In some ways though, it was ahead of it's time. Touchscreen, internet access, non-game apps, etc.
Tiger just didn't have the technology to really do any of it justice, nor the money. After all, their previous bred and butter had been cheap, simple LCD games.

I bought one. Yea, it was terrible. Aside from the fact it was black & white, everything on it was slow and clunky. If it had a faster CPU or more RAM, maybe it'd been something decent.
I got the Game.com's version of "Sonic Jam".. despite the title, it had little to do with the Saturn game of the same name. It had a few levels based off of the Genesis levels of Sonic 2, 3, and &Knuckles, but they weren't exactly the same. Nor did it have the complete games. Oh, and it ran very slow.

Prediction time! What comment will we see first?! Will it be:
A) Vita sales aren't so bad. Just wait till they put Monster Hunter on that thing. Just wait ...
B) Whoa, 3DS dropped 140k units? Yikes, Nintendo should be worried. (This is normally said in all seriousness and fails to recognize the fact that the 3DS outsold everything else on the list combined.)
C) Yeesh, why can't we get weekly sales from America or Europe?
Step right up and place your bets!

Hey now, it's rude to speak of steaks in the presence of a sandwich that went stale ages past.

A minute into that video I caught myself wondering if the 13 minutes portayed covered the entirety of the game.
I guess not, but it much longer than I would have endured ever trying to play that.

I love how at about 7:34 the player runs into multiple enemies in the faux-open-3D space, and decides to turn back so that they follow him onto a more linear plane. I can only imagine the pain in turning and aiming there...
Actually, watching that video (for 7 minutes and 34 seconds longer than I should have, really) makes me feel both admiration and sorrow for the programmers in creating something far better than should've existed on that platform, but even then they still ended up with something quite garishly horrible.

Don't worry Sony... I've got my pre-order for a Vita already. No chance you can fail with my purchase! NO CHANCE AT ALL!

Forget unlocking, I would be the master of smashing that GBC cartridge if I had ever played that.

GBC cartridge? First think about that. GameBoy COLOR. That has no color. Second, Joystiq clearly says "GBC never existed, but this Game.Com version did."
Now think about what you said.

The Xbox 360 numbers don't make sense.
It's sales went up by around 300 units, yet it somehow dropped 44% from last week?

A group on the internet is actually trying to preserve a ROM of the game boy color version of Resident Evil that some collector has. I saw this post on Unseen 64

I was so pissed when they cancelled Resident Evil for the Gameboy. It actually had a lot better graphics than that piece of crap.

I COMPLETELY forgot about the Game.com. I bought one on clearance and absolutely had RE 2. And more than that, I LIKED IT. Haters gon hate.

I've never actually played a Resident Evil game, but from what I know they were apparently the basis for Devil May Cry. Since i've played DMC, I guess have some sort of idea of how the Resident Evil games work. (or at least used to since i'm assuming the game as evolved in terms of UI and gameplay)
That game in the video there isn't all that bad. I've played some bad games from the old days, and honestly that one looks great. Certainly not as bad as say Grand Theft Auto on the gameboy.

RE was amazing back in the day. It loses a lot of its luster with its famous "tank controls" and anything from that era is hard to enjoy now because of the jaggies, but there is good reason that RE and RE2 are still considered among the best in their generation.
It still managed to scare you despite the original's cheesy intro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fw5sQn5Cviw
