Think New Super Mario Bros., but newer. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata assured investors today that a new 2D Super Mario game is in the works for 3DS, this one distinguished by its "side-scrolling action."
Iwata offered no further information about the game in his presentation, but expects it to launch sometime within Nintendo's next fiscal year. That places the new Mario's debut sometime after March 2012 -- just far enough to complete Super Mario 3D Land and yearn for the days when things were nice and flat.

Some "Bowser x Peach" action is what the series really needs. Those Koopa Kids and Bowser Jr. had to have come from somewhere!

I'm still beating 3D land with both Mario and Luigi so I can get that secret level... I've clocked like 18 hours... That being said, more Mario is always good.

The name shouldn't be the deciding factor.
That said, this "New Super Mario Bros." stuff is getting old. I'd rather it was just numbered.

@Captaindrek1 Eventually, there will come a time when naming conventions will be like thus: "New New New New Super Mario Bros & Wario 7."

Despite the ludicrous name, I'd totally go for a SMB game that let me play as a Wario Land-style Wario.

Another 2.5D side-scroller for $40.
Is Nintendo really getting that lazy? Or is it just that the 3DS is too weak?
For a '3D' system, the 3DS is sure getting a lot of 2.5D games: Shinobi, Sonic, Rayman, Raving Rabbids, Cave Story, Mario. These are full priced retail games!

I don't think you understand what 3D in the context of 3DS means, and I also get the impression that you're complaining solely for the sake of complaining.

The sense of depth isn't as pronounced on a 2 dimensional plane as it is on a 3D one.
Also, I'm not complaining for the sake of complaining; I'm just disappointed that the 3DS isn't shaping up to be a portable Gamecube in the way the PSP was close to a portable ps2.
Sure you've got Resident Evil and Metal Gear, but Ninty hasn't been putting console quality effort on the system thus far.
Small and bite sized software is fine on the go, even in 2D, but not at $40 retail price. For instance, take the character Mario out of Super Mario 3D Land and leave the gameplay and style intact: very few would be willing to pay $40.
Give me a Mario Game with SM:Galaxy caliber scope and gameplay and I'd willingly spend $50. New Super Mario Bro's Wii was simply a Jacked up DS game marketed towards casual gamers who don't understand the value of content they are plunking $50 for.
Imagine Braid, Trine, or Super Meat Boy being sold for $50. Those 2D games are easily as good as NSMB: Wii and sell for a fraction of the price.
The Mario brand is being milked to death to the point of Nintendo shamelessly pimping the voice actor behind Mario, Charles Martinet, in PR infomercials for a party game that has more sequels than a Jenna Jameson skin flick.
Vice President Fils Amie constantly derided iphone games as poor products for gamers, yet look at the software Nintendo launched the 3DS with: a shallow submarine game (pun intended), a rehash of a pet simulator, and a hand glider simulator ripped straight from Wii resort. All for full price. If that's not nickel and dimming customers, then I don't know what is.
So no, I'm not complaining for the sake of complaining; I'm complaining because Nintendo have become hypocrites and are encouraging developers to follow their stead.
Here's hoping some developers will find room in the market for gamers looking for some bang for their buck and not just another quick cash in.
And before I get accused of trolling, I'd like to say that I've been one of the biggest Nintendo fans for many years - which is why it pains me to write all this.

The problem with the 3DS is that it is precisely a portable GC/N64. Two of Nintendo's worst performing game consoles in terms of sales and software support. The DS was originally marketed as a portable N64 and its sales were stagnant. Only when NSMB DS and Mario Kart DS came out and the system was rebranded as a portabled SNES did the system take off to the incredible sales it now has today.
Seeing as the 3DS has so far mostly emulated the GC/N64 software (I mean it's literally 3D facelifts of N64 and GC games) we are naturally seeing a N64/GC sales performance. And for what the system cost and lack of DS-like software sales is one of the main reasons Nintendo has taken its first financial loss in 3 decades.
The smart thing would be to strip out or tone down the 3D and focus on taking the software back to the GB/GBA/SNES/DS direction rather than the N64/GC direction. Nintendo is probably panicking right now as they've done the same thing with the Wii U. Probably why they're rebranding it, and at least they're launching with a 2D Mario.
But yeah, not making a 2D Mario right now would be stupid for Nintendo since it drives hardware sales, unlike 3D Mario.

Sadly, I think you are correct in pointing out the correlation between 2D games and sales.
Excluding Zelda, Nintendo lost me last generation with the direction of the DS and the Wii. Unfortunately, I think it'll be the same this time around :(

You hate 2D games? You must have not played many games as a child.
What's wrong with making a 2D game in this day and age? 99% of the games on iOS and Android are 2D games, as are the games on Xbox Live Arcade.
And back in the old days of gaming, we payed $30 or more for a copy of Super Mario Bros. 3. A game's price should reflect it's value and content. NSMB Wii may not be worth $50 to you, but to millions of other people, it is worth it.
I personally loved NSMB Wii, simply because it's a brilliant throwvback to Super Mario Bros. 3 in terms of level design and the Koopa Kids.
Mega Man 9 & 10, Rayman Origins, NSMB DS / Wii, Sonic Generations, DKC Returns, etc. are all proving your point wrong. 2D gaming can coexist with the latest and greatest high-tech 3D games.
End rant.

I'm not against 2d games, I like some of the modern ones.
99% of ios games are 99 cents. Xbox live arcade games are $5-$10.
If you like 'copy and paste 2d' games for $50 then that's fine. Don't be ignorant to the cost of producing these 2D Mario games; Nintendo is making a killing off of these 'throwbacks'.
Me, I'd like to see Nintendo innovate and stop whoring out my childhood experiences.
