Nintendo Network is not a rebranded Nintendo Wi Fi Connection. It is an all new network.

*200 games for 3DS currently in development

*60% of all 3DS systems are connected online at any given time

*Wii U will launch before Christmas. Nintendo promises a strong launch lineup.

*Wii U will be NFC enabled.

*Nintendo will offer DLC for first party games on a case by case basis.

*Wii U will have unified account based system ala PSN and Xbox Live. Your account will no longer be tied to your hardware.

*Nintendo will announce a lot more things related to its online and digital strategy in the coming days.

*Digital will include user to user communications and sharing. Iwata mentioned the possibility of selling your copy of digital game to a friend after being done with it.

*Full Retail Games will be avalable for Download for Both 3DS and Wii U via eShop.

*Nintendo Network will be Nintendo's new online network across 3DS and Wii U.

*Nintendo will announce major alliances and partnerships with external parties and companies that were not previously considered.

*Wii U will support microtransactions

*Digital will not cannibalize retail, and retail will not cannibalize digital on 3DS and Wii U.

*Miyamoto: Wii U online has to be something totally new and progressive to attract new users.

*Wii U will be more than just improved graphics, but some games, like the new Zelda, will be graphical showcases.

*Communities from Mario Kart will become a regular feature in Nintendo games

I hope all of this proves true. That would more than justify a day 1 buy from me. Very good news for 3DS owners too. I don't regret being an early adopter and this made me happy.

If true this alleviates a big chunk of my fear of a digital future.

I thought I read somewhere that Nintendo was pro loaning games to friends and used games. That it helps sales or word of mouth in the long run. I hope this is something they feel and I just didn't dream it.

Have you been to greenmangaming.com? I hadn't heard of it until yesterday.

From the site:
"Unlike any other digital retailer, our customers can trade-in their digitally downloaded games for credit in their account and this credit can then be used for new purchases."

It uses a sort of digital "supply & demand" and the price actually changes depending how many "used" digital keys they have in stock.

It certainly seems like an interesting concept and if Nintendo implemented something like this they would definitely be ahead of MS and Sony.

I'm intrigued. I hope it's at least as good as the PSN, but I'll wait to see what, if any, Nintendoisms they incorporate into it to make things unnecessarily difficult or gimped before I make a final judgement.

I'm in the skeptical crowd about how well Nintendo can deliver. PSN is still working on catching up Xbox Live, and Xbox Live has set the bar really high (relative to Nintendo's Friend Codes anyway...).

On the 3DS, I think they skimped a bit on the hardware. No background downloading bugs me just a bit which is more likely a hardware limitation. And I wonder if the hardware can handle an Xbox Live or PSN-style friends list that is always accessible. Hopefully the Wii U has the horsepower to be more capable.

The 3DS does have background downloaded now. You just select "Download Later" after making some purchases, then exit the eShop and close the 3DS. All your stuff will immediately download in a couple minutes.

@Vcize - From IGN (http://wii.ign.com/articles/121/1217360p1.html):

"Personal Accounts for Wii U - Nintendo will now allow personalized accounts for its next home console, which will allow multiple users per system. Online profiles will no longer be system-based. "We will also be able to construct and offer the [personal account system] by combining a variety of different services and content," Iwata said."

Honestly Nintendo have failed to deliver on so many initatives I don't believe anything they say until 1 year after they launch it. They launch stuff like this and then just leave it to die. Frankly this should have been in the Wii launch and not have had to wait until now. At least they stopped pretending people don't want it. That's a start.

Kinda makes you wonder what Sony and Microsoft have planned. If they don't have some kind of groundbreaking amazing new announcements, Nintendo's going to walk out of there looking like Apple after the ipad reveal.

Nothing is really ground breaking so far about the wii u though. Heck, announcing a network should have happened 6 years ago, this is seriously behind the curve.

There's nothing ground breaking in Nintendo's announcement. The only feature in it that PSN/XBL don't already have is there was mention that there might be an implementation of the ability to trade digital games to friends, which even if Nintendo does end up doing it, will most likely not spread to any other platforms.

I'm not saying Nintendo's announcement will be groundbreaking. I'm saying that Nintendo's likely going to have the biggest announcements of the entire show, simply because it's a new console.

Unless Sony and Microsoft come out strong, anything they announce is likely going to be overshadowed by news of the Wii U, much like how most CES news gets overshadowed by whatever random thing Apple talks about.

The Nintendo Way is late, that's the truth. Motion controls, touch technology, cartridge format for mobile gaming were all on Sony platforms long before Nintendo -

Oh wait.

And didn't have half the features it has now, nor was it as standardized across games as it is now.

Realistically the Live from the original Xbox isn't comparable to the Live of the Xbox 360, especially after all their big updates over the years.

The PS2 had the eyetoy, which allowed you to play some games with a button-less wand-like device that would track motions. It was used for a sword/shield game if I remember right. If you want to get really technical, the PS2 had what could be considered a button-less crude wiimote in it's extreme infancy.

Nintendo however turned this rough basic gameplay mechanic into a fully functioning and featured controller. (To be clear, I'm not implying the WiiMote took any ideas from any PS2 controllers.)

I hope they'll do a system update for 3DS that'll replace Friend Codes with Nintendo Network user names. While the 3DS implementation of Friend Codes is a lot better than Wii or DS, user names would still be much better.

And selling digital versions of Wii U games? With the system using 25GB discs, that doesn't sound fun...
