Nintendo President Satoru Iwata believes the company has proven there's still a market for dedicated gaming handheld hardware like the 3DS. In a briefing -- which covered a lot of ground -- Iwata revealed the pictured chart above, comparing internal Nintendo weekly sales data of the Wii, DS and 3DS. The executive said the initial sales pace of the 3DS was "unsatisfactory," but the device gained momentum after the price cut and the launch of popular games like Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7 (and Monster Hunter 3 (Tri) G in Japan).
"Last summer, when the sales pace of the Nintendo 3DS was slow, there were extreme remarks saying, 'With the penetration of smartphones, will there still be a market for handheld hardware?,' which was almost equal to 'Handheld hardware is not necessary anymore,'" Iwata said. "I believe we proved that such opinions are incorrect."
In the end, however, Nintendo did not reach its internal sales goal for the device, despite the 3DS gaining momentum and ending the year with a respectable 15 million unit sales. Iwata says the company could not cover the lack of units sold pre-price drop, which is one of the reasons for its negatively revised financial forecasts.

I love my 3DS but I think the games are a little too expensive.

@jlatimer11 I agree, but I also try to take the view that these games are catching up with consoles in terms of graphics, and they cost more to develop as a result. DLC is also less prevalent on handheld games, and that means that the price of the initial purchase is going to go up since there is no way to gain additional revenue after selling the game.

I find a lot of games a little too expensive, but I thought the recent Zen Pinball at $7 was a steal. Retail games are definitely high though, but I find some are worth the price - and those are the (only) ones I buy. Otherwise, I hit up Craigslist.

I don't have a 3DS, and I actually do have a lot of games on my iPhone, but sometimes I wish I had a portable game with the quality of a proper Zelda game. I should probably try Nova2 or that Uncharted ripoff that Gameloft makes. I know they won't really touch the 3DS in terms of the gaming experience you get with proper controls and better games, but it can be "close enough"--that's the danger for Nintendo. The market tends to love stuff that's "good enough", without being the best.

There is no RPG or adventure game on iOS that rivals the quality of a Zelda. I have played countess iOS games, including NOVA2, and nothing of that genre comes anywhere close to Nintendo quality. Now, other genres are different. Infinity Blade 2 of course is a fantastic twitch fighter (though I still prefer Punchout! Wii), and there are plenty of awesome puzzle games. I'm loving Puzzle Juice, which Joystiq just gave a very positive review to despite nagging control issues.
Though then again, Pushmo actually destroys most iOS puzzle games as well...
Anyway, point being, if you're looking for the iOS Zelda, it's not there yet. Not even close.
Now when is Final Fantasy Tactics coming to iPad?!?!?

Don't get me wrong, I understand why the games are priced what they are... they are just too expensive for me to impulse buy.
What irritates me, and this may not all be on Nintendo, is that 3+ years after release 1st party games are still basically full price. The Selects line has helped this issue, but it still bothers me.

To be fair, the Wii wasn't available for a good year after launch, and the DS launch line-up and overall premise was still a little too "new" back then. Also, the 30-ish week mark is when it started it's sharp rise up-ward is around when Christmas time started. ;)

I was thinking the exact same thing. Looking at that charts in fact, not only at when the price change occurred, but how far 3DS adoption has climbed both in reference to the DS and the Wii, Sony may seriously want to reconsider the price point of the PlayStation Vita before it launches next month, or they may be looking at a repeat of the 3DS' initial dismal performance, prior to last summer's price drop.
Whether they want to admit it or not, both companies are in the same boat, attempting to compete with dedicated portables against a world ruled by iPhones, iPads and Android devices . . . this goes doubly so since you can now play full retail PC and console games on these multi-use devices thanks to all the emerging cloud services like OnLive, Gaikai, and PlayCast (and soon, even GameStop and Google).

I think the question is really more about whether dedicated handhelds are viable for everyone involved and not just Nintendo and Monster Hunter.
Nintendo can boast about their franchise sales all they want, but if nobody else makes money on dedicated handhelds then the market will not last as it is.

The changes in the market probably wont be seen for a while anyway. Phones and Tablets are still relativly new, and the kids that are enjoying them are a lot younger. People who grew up on handheld systems are still going to by handhels systems because thats what they know. Maybe the next PSP or DS/GB system will suffer, but I think there is still a market for these right now.

So, the 3ds took 19 weeks to move it's first million, and the doom and gloom was unneeded and biased, but the same folks demand the psv get those articles after < 6 weeks?
Honestly, looking at that chart it's pretty obvious that the price drop + finally getting some games did the trick. Had they not done that, well, things weren't looking to good.
Nice to see them doing good now, hope sony does the same and we get a real handheld war on our hands this gen.

But that doom & gloom got Nintendo to drop the price by $80, which is what helped along with the Mario titles.
Perhaps the same doom & gloom directed at Sony will get them to drop to a more desirable price, too.

i love how this is a giant surprise to everyone. I think if people didn't believe the press to such an unhealthy level, they would be able to come to common sense conclusions like this themselves.
But instead it's just more fear mongering because it sells website hits. I hope you enjoyed your fair share of 3DS and Vita doom and gloom stories, Joystiq. Just to top it off with an article saying it's all ok!

To be fair, it wasn't just Joystiq that was all doom and gloom, it was all the media sites.
I think people also forgot that the 3DS launched at the beginning of the year, and that impacts sales too. The Vita will likely see a slow start as well in North America.

Because phone sales are the same market as handheld sales, am I right? Not like companies buy tons of smart phones for employees or people get them as multi use devices.
Whats next, comparing yearly pc sales to consoles to declare consoles as dead?

A phone? Maybe maybe not. But, people buy iPod Touches for games all the time. When shopping for phones, the amount of games on iOS doesn't hurt sales of the iPhone.
I have a 3DS, Touch, and iPhone though. Honestly I play the 3DS at home, and iPhone games on the go - at work or whatever. So for me, there's room for both. But, I'm not exactly a normal case though. :)

Did you miss where it took 19 weeks to move a million units in japan? Most of the doom and gloom was from that time frame. Heck, it didn't match DS ship numbers till week 35.
What the chart proves is that the doom and gloom was understandable, up until the week 35 sales spike.

Sorry, but that alone didn't effect the week to week sales much. It lagged for months after that.
19 weeks to hit 1 million, 30+ to hit 2 million, was grounds for concern. Just makes the fanboys crying for vita is doomed after 5 weeks look like massive hypocrites.

Vita sales have lagged behind 3DS sales from the beginning and without a natural disaster to shake things up. You think Sony can afford a price cut to stimulate the market? They've been hemorrhaging money for the last 4 years.

Mobile devices have a long way to go before they catch up to dedicated handhelds. If you thought the battery life on the Vita was bad, try playing ANYTHING on a phone, and see if you can get more than an hour or so out of it. A pure touch control interface just doesn't work, either.

Nobody has mentioned the obvious two stick redesign that could be in the works given the recent Circle Pad Pro peripheral.
Several people that I know are purposefully holding out on buying a 3DS in hopes that Nintendo will put out a redesign that adds a second analog stick.

@(Unverified) Why are people obsessed with having two sticks? How many games are difficult to play with one stick? Using the circle pad pro was near enough useless for RE:Rev as the control were incredibly tight with just one stick.
All i can think the second stick could be used for was FPS games, but people will even admit to playing it with a d-pad and touch screen (The DS versions of Modern Warfare)

I think Nintendo painted themselves into a corner with their "casual" philosophy. With the DS, they got plenty of sales catering to the non-gamer crowd. They released all kinds of oddball software, which requires little player commitment. Now Apple/Android has taken away that market and left nintendo back to the "children's video games" world whose sales numbers are much lower.
I don't think it's doom and gloom, but--as far as Nintendo is concerned--it's back to square one. And, personally, I can't see the PSP-Vita doing much better.
