Thankfully I was one of the few lucky to grab a copy of Suikoden II when it was first released, along with the original Suikoden. Sadly the series took a turn for the worse when it made the transition to 3D when it hit the PS2.

@Iwa I loved them all except for Suiko IV, that one was bad. And I'll agree with Jason that Suikoden II is a one of the best JRPGs out there :O

@Iwa Suikoden V was amazing as well. Suikoden II is by far my favorite of the series, but Suikoden V takes the second spot for me.

My least favorite is Suikoden Tactics. I never finished that one... It is sitting on my shelf collecting dust.

Suikoden V was amazing, specially if you get all the 108 stars of destiny. Better ending imho ;D

Pure luck on my part on snagging it not too long after release. I'd just finished buying Tales of Destiny II, and didn't have a whole lot of money when we saw a used copy in Software, Etc. Much debate ensued, but my brother says the words, "But what if we never see it again?" More prescient words were never spoken, and we bought it on the spot.

As for the actual game, it's phenomenal once you get past the slow beginning areas. I initially had never pushed through because it's a little more spread out than Suikoden initially, but the game soon rises to heights unattained by its predecessor, although the original is worthy as well!

I'll look out for this one.

I was never able to find the game to buy it, despite how hard I tried, during the PS1-PS2 era.

But I played the hell out of it. It wasn't just the story, but everything overall felt much improved over the already great Suikoden 1. While I enjoyed the first game, the army battles felt increasingly simple as pure numbers started to beat out strategy.
Yet with 2, and the decidedly turn-based army battles, it became much more engaging. You weren't worrying about numbers then in the 10s of thousands, you handled groups led by your own characters, flanking and pincing enemy troops, instead of choosing between "arrow, sword, magic".

Part of the reason I love Suikoden II - though possibly not quite more than Chrono Trigger, but it's right next to it - are its villains. In most games, the antagonist is an evil force of nature, destroying or taking over the world just because that's what's done. The problem with that is that the player knows that if they progress in the game, the villain won't succeed. There's no emotional stakes.

In Suikoden II, the world-saving stakes are lower, but the emotional stakes are higher. Luca Blight is one of the most vicious villains in gaming. "Bark like a dog!" Because his goals are narrow - take over a country - it's possible for him to win, and increases the stakes. He's one of the greatest force-of-evil villains in game history.

To add to that, you have the secondary villain, a character whose motivations are entirely understandable and sympathetic. In many games, that character would be the hero - he's kind of the hero here, but he's still an antagonist. That's really the best of both worlds.

There are lots of other reasons to love Suikoden II, of course, oh that music, but its antagonists are what really make the game's story so much better than other games.

Sounds like the rule of thumb "your story can only be as good as its villain" stands true for this game!

@liquidsoap89

That is 100% true. A good villain can carry an otherwise lackluster story, but a bad villain will kill even the most heroic epic.

Games with ambiguous or at least morally gray villains have always been the best. Chrono Trigger had a version of this which drew in lots of fans. Most of the praise for Final Fantasy Tactics comes from this notion as well. I have always loved the original wild arms for it's story and part of that is because it does take the time to show you the perspective of the supernatural evil you have to defeat. And not all of them are necessarily forces of evil nature.

Luca Blight though.. best video game villain ever, hands down.

Suikoden was the first RPG I played after Final Fantasy VII (Which introduced me to the genre thanks to a friend that wouldn't shut up about it)

Suikoden blew my mind more than VII. Who knew a relatively odd looking game could be more fun in some ways?

Not the kid back then, I can tell you that.

Suikoden II was like delicious icing on the cake when I got it through a trade from switchouse.com. I believe I traded Metal Gear Solid and Tekken 2 or 3 for it. Yes, lucky bastard, I was. I also got a mint condition Final Fantasy Tactics for $40 there when it was going for double and there wasn't a GH release yet.

Ah early, young, naive internet; how I miss you. You used to be cool, man.

Really good column and totally agree with you. Suikoden & Suikoden II are two of my favorite and most memorable games ever. I kept both and even have a sealed copy of Suikoden II that I keep as a collector's item. I loved walking through the awesome environments looking for all 108 Stars of Destiny in both games.

You should have been faster, or maybe you just didn't spend enough time with her. Whatever the case, it's your fault that she died, not the arrow that pierced her heart.

I've heard rumors of how you can save her... that's somewhat of a rarity in JRPGs, huge changes based on your actions in the story a lot like in WRPGs... but wait, that isn't entirely true, Persona 1 did that, and so did Star Ocean I think. (Only played Suikoden II and Persona 1...)

It's actually required that you save her in order to get the true ending.

The Persona series actually does the huge decision thing in all the games (although I haven't finished either part of 2), Persona 4 in particular tempts the player into getting the bad ending.

I am sad no one has spoken of the most important character in gaming history...Qlon.

'Welcome to (name of castle). I feel so good'. Such emotions and devotion to stand there and say that every time, devoting his life to the sole purpose of saying that line and never moving. I am ashamed no one dedicated him an entire essay on his hardship!

Jrpg's used to be my favorite type of game but they have, depending on the game, not changed or evolved for the worse. Wrpg's on the other hand have become increasingly impressive. I recently got dragon age ultimate for 360 on amazon for $20. That game is far better than the likes of final fantasy 13 which was a huge disappointment for me. Final fantasy used to be my favorite series.

Suikoden II is one of my favorite games ever, and it's an absolute travesty that PSN hasn't yet bothered to bring it out on the service. Come to think of it, outside the original Suikoden, a smattering of minor Working Designs titles, and a couple of Capacom ones, the vast majority of JRPGs available on PSN are from Square. Not that it would have to do with any sort of favoritism by Sony toward certain lucrative third-party publishers. Nahhh...

Lunar, Lunar 2, Suikoden 2, Vandal Hearts, and every Sega Saturn RPG and SRPG ever made (such as the fantastic Shining Force III, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Dragon Force) seriously NEED to be given second lives...but at this point I'm honestly wondering if it will ever happen on PSN or any other service. The bias against any non-Square titles in this genre transcends any measure of quality, as these are some of the greatest games ever made.

For personality and characterization, Suikoden III was easily the top of the heap. It was the only game in the series to effectively use facial emotions, side-glances, and other body language tools. Mainly because the graphics engine wasn't trying to run realism. While I liked V, the main character gave me the willies. He looked and dressed bizarrely.
