Adding onto the mounting pile of news coming from an investor's briefing with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata comes word that the Wii U's tablet-like controller will have "Near Field Communication" technology (NFC). In Nintendo's words, the tech will serve to "read and write data via noncontact NFC and to expand the new play format in the video game world." Owners can reportedly create their own cards and figurines for use with the WiiPad's NFC functionality.
Confusing as that may be, Iwata means that the Wii U's WiiPad will come equipped with similar tech to that used in Skylanders alter its gameplay via real world objects (Skylanders uses RFID tech, which isn't exactly the same, but a similar concept). The tech could conceivably be used to make credit card payments as well, which Iwata specifically mentions in the last paragraph.
We wish it was all announcements of new entries in classic franchises and promises of unified online systems, folks, but that's just how it goes. On the bright side, more Drobot?
Update: This post originally stated that Near Field Communication tech is also used in the Skylanders game from Activision, which isn't accurate. Skylanders uses RFID technology, which is similar but not identical. Sorry about that, folks!

@KaBob799 WTF is new about a tablet? The WiiU controller is a freaking tablet, whats new about streaming content from console to a handheld controller? What's new about NFC (Sony, Nokia and Phillips are the founding members of the NFC consortium btw)
Whats so innovative and new about the WiiU controller. Its pretty much a package of whats trending since 2008 to now. First it is a 6 inch tablet with buttons, it has motion sensors, it has a camera and an NFC reader. The UI of the WiiU console is controlled right from the tablet aka PSP and Vita controlling PS3 UI. Don;t get me wrong, Nintendo has done it superbly but it is hardly anything new and pretty much anyone can do it.
Console manufacturers try to give a consistent experience across the different platforms while offering a few exclusive things, that is why a single game can be made for more than 1 platform while maintaining the same experience. I welcome Sony or Microsoft making a tablet controller for their next consoles, Sony already has that covered with Vita.

I'm fairly confident that the games won't cost 300 dollars.

But if they have that, there will be no place for the kitchen sink slot on the controller!

That's actually pretty cool, yet another reason to get the Wii U.

A digital card reader is toy-ish?
You do know that video games are just toys right? Get off your hardcore-gaming pedestal and be more open-minded for a change.
"I'm such a hardcore gamer! I love games with shooting, gore, shooting, gore, and the occasional interactive cutscene!"

Sorry Nintendo.
I feel burnt on the Wii. I'm not touching the next version until I see a strong library on the shelves.

Interesting. I wonder if they'll implement some kind of "card swipe" feature for online purposes for those of us with touchless credit cards. I wouldn't mind not having to store my data on an account OR have to enter it each time I get some DLC.
