Debunk: Xbox720.com, Playstation4.com aren't owned by Microsoft, Sony

We'll wait while you click these links -- Xbox720.com and PlayStation4.com -- to see that they do indeed redirect to random technology-news pages. We'll even wait a little longer as you open a new tab, type both of those addresses in and see that we weren't lying, and they really do redirect to unofficial sites. Now we'll take a few seconds to get over the fact that you didn't trust us. Without trust there is no love; remember that.

Yesterday Xbox720.com redirected to the US PlayStation website, but it appears the domain owner has used the attention gained from that to open his own blog, Fusible reports. Xbox720.com now redirects to a tech-news aggregation site and was previously monetized via Google's Adsense program; before that it hosted random sites dating back to 2006 at least. In November 2011, the site was registered to Jeremiah Germany, but that information is now protected through Whois Privacy.

PlayStation4.com redirects to a PlayStation news and cheat site.

It appears the redirections aren't as vindictive as the ModernWarfare3.com debacle, in which a Battlefield fan used the domain to convert Call of Duty players to his shooter of choice. We don't even know what the next Xbox will be called -- considering the first Xbox wasn't called "180," it's not set in stone that the third iteration will follow in the 360's footsteps. However, Microsoft's Xbox360.com redirects to the main Xbox site, and Sony's PlayStation3.com heads to the US PlayStation page, so it follows that they would want similar sites to do the same.

They're never going to use those domains anyway. Xbox 720 or whatever will be directed to xbox.com/whatever and ps4 will be at playstation.com/whatever

In the year since I got my PS3 I've found I prefer it over my Xbox 360, for whatever reason, for multi-platform games that I can't play on my gaming PC. Add to that the fact a name like Xbox 720 is just f*cking stupid, and I have more reason to make my start in the next generation with a PS4 instead of a new Xbox.

Until Sony releases the PS4 for $1,000, anyway. That will be the deal-breaker for THAT idea.

Anyone else that thinks the next PlayStation should me named Morta or Mortalis? That means death, as in opposed to Vita, life.

Both Xbox and Playstation are very well protected trademarks. Both Sony & Microsoft can easily claim ownership of these domains. If their products were common words like 'games console 4', then they might have a problem, but since they're both unique brands, the current owners wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Also, it's well known that Microsoft named the second Xbox the 360 instead of 'Xbox 2' because their research showed that consumers thought a 'Playstation 3' sounded newer and more advanced than an 'Xbox 2'. So it's highly unlikely the next will be called the 'Xbox 720' since consumers may associate '720' with HD quality, so it's more likely to be 'Xbox 1080' or something completely new (most probable).

It's going to be the BingBox and it's going to record everything you do, say, and search. Then it's going to sell it to advertisers

I'm voting for the neXtBox and something that is not ps4 otherwise we're doomed to see ads with "playstation 4 life" or "playstation 4 everyone"

I think Microsoft should keep it simple, and go back to Xbox and market it as 'The new Xbox.' If they give it a clean black look without being too bulky like the original they can basically remake the original. The 360 was a big enough success that it doesnt need a special name to bring people into buying it.

As for Playstation. I feel as thought they will go with Playstation 4 because they cant really change it to something else without imply that it is a different sort of machine. They already are up to 3, changing it to something else would be interesting.

I wonder which console will set the pace... I'm Sure the 720 will.
