Odds are if you've been trying to track down a new PS3 lately, you're having one heck of a time. Well, if you wouldn't mind plunking down a bit of coin to get one in a few weeks' time, then you may be interested in what Dell's got going on right now.

The retailer has taken $30 off the standard price for the 120GB PS3 Slim, bringing it down to a pleasant $269 -- the caveat being that Dell won't actually ship the system until an estimated 10 days after you purchase it (details here).

For a bit of perspective, know that basically anywhere you try to purchase a PS3 online, you're going to be waiting a while -- unless you get one from a third-party merchant on Amazon, where you can replace "impatiently waiting" with "spending a lot more money."
After discovering that the Xbox 360 120GB hard drive has been discounted in Europe "while supplies last," Joystiq has now learned that the drive has been discounted in the United States as well. When asked if the European discount would make it overseas, a Microsoft representative informed Joystiq that the drive has been reduced to $129.99. Again, the rep noted that the discount will apply "while supplies last," which implies that the 120GB drive won't be around for much longer. When asked directly if the unit was being discontinued, the rep stated only that she couldn't comment.

It would seem that several retailers haven't gotten the memo, as many still list the drive at a $149 price point (the $129 price is listed on GameStop's website, for what it's worth). Of course, the drive can also be found much cheaper than the new $129 price, though readers should be aware that there is a very healthy knock-off hard drive market out there.

While Microsoft won't directly confirm that the 120GB is kaput, all signs are certainly pointing that way. The company has already announced that a 250GB standalone drive will be made available in Japan. With the price cut now effective in Europe and the US "while supplies last," it's likely only a matter of time before Microsoft announces the 250GB drive for other territories.
Xbox 360 120GB HDD discounted in the US too, again 'while supplies last' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Feb 2010 16:30:00 EST. According to Eurogamer, Microsoft has announced that the Xbox 360 120GB hard drive has now been discounted to €129.99 ($180) in Europe and £79.99 ($125) in the UK. Curiously, the Microsoft representative appended "while supplies last" to the announcement, implying that the 120GB won't be around for much longer. This news comes on the heels of a standalone 250GB hard drive being announced for Japan. When asked whether that drive would release outside of Japan, Microsoft informed Joystiq that it had nothing to announce at the time.

If the separate 250GB drive did become available elsewhere and the 120GB were discontinued, consumers would have to choose between 60GB and 250GB add-ons. As Microsoft's typical strategy has been to replace the lowest end of its hardware spectrum, it would make more sense to discontinue the 60GB drive instead.

Then again, as we've learned time and again, sometimes that strategy can be typical Microsoft.
According to posters at the Slick Deals forum, Circuit City is currently selling the 120GB hard drive for the Xbox 360 at the staggeringly reduced price of $80. These puppies normally sell for twice that price, so it's one heck of a deal. There is a small catch though: you'll have to hoof it over to your local Circuit City if you want to get your hands on one, the deal is nowhere to be found online. In fact, we can't even find the 120GB drive listed at the Circuit City website at all. The deal isn't being advertised, but several members of the Slick Deals forums have attested to its authenticity.

If anyone out there has managed to take advantage of the deal, let us know in the comments. You might want to act quickly. We don't know how long it will last.

[Via Punch Jump. We're well aware of what many of you are thinking: At $149 (previously $179), the new price of the Xbox 360's 120 gigglebyte hard drive is still pretty steep. Though we're surprised it took this long for confirmation to arrive, the hard drive price drop occurred in conjunction with the console price cuts that hit last weekend. It's amazing to think that for just $50 more, you could pick up an entire console -- the $199 Arcade model.
Microsoft confirms 120GB HDD reduced to $149 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Sep 2008 20:30:00 EST. And GameDaily has learned as much from a "very reliable" anonymous source inside Sony. However, that source said Sony hasn't actually decided what configuration the new model will sport, but that its executives and other officials have been meeting in Japan this week to figure that out.

"There are a lot of different strategies under consideration, but nothing is final yet. They are considering ways to put some relevant distance between the two PS3 SKUs, but it's unclear how that will roll out," the source said. Additionally, the source said the reason for Sony considering yet another hardware configuration is because it doesn't believe there's enough difference between the 40GB and 80GB models.

So if GameDaily's source is to be trusted, there's definitely something in the works, but it doesn't seem like even Sony knows what will be coming down the pipeline at this point. Either way, consumers won't be too upset if Sony can pack in a bigger hard drive and maybe a DualShock 3 while keeping the pricing structure the same.

[Via Joystiq]
Source says Sony still undecided on new PS3 model originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Feb 2008 19:00:00 EST. Adding to earlier claims from an Ars Technica mole, IGN reports various sources have told the website that a recent Gamestop conference call reportedly confirmed the death of the 80 GB PlayStation 3 model. The sources also allege that in its place Sony will release a 120 GB version packaged with ready-to-rumble DualShock 3 controllers.

Sony told IGN that any talk about new consoles iterations is rumor and speculation, and therefore no comment. We haven't seen any patents filed for a new PS3 model (each one has a different model number; see our fancy SKU chart), but the circumstantial evidence is starting to add up.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
Rumor: Gamestop conference call mentions 120 GB PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 18:00:00 EST. We've all been wondering for quite some time now. IGN has heard from multiple GameStop sources that Sony's planning on introducing a new model -- 120GB (or more), bundled with a DualShock 3 controller. If the system also includes PS2 backwards compatibility, it would be the most primo system to date. However, details of BC and a release date haven't been unearthed by IGN's sources.

The details, however, match an earlier rumor from Ars Technica, which pointed to a 120GB system bundled with a rumbling controller. With so many different sources confirming the same thing, we feel as though it won't be long until Sony announces a new SKU. Perhaps at GDC?

[Via Digg]
Rumor: GameStop conference call talks 120GB system, with DualShock 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 11:30:00 EST. In a statement to GameIndustry.biz a Sony representative said that they "do not currently have any plans to release a 120GB PlayStation 3 in the UK". This puts pay to the idea that the extra HD space was for the upcoming PlayTV service, which launches in the region in March. Which is a shame, really, because the extra space would really come in handy.

No doubt rumours will continue regarding a release of a 120GB+ PS3 in America until SCEA shoot it down, as SCEE has, or until we start getting leaks from the big electronics stores. That's what usually happens, at least.
Sony: "No 120GB PS3 in the UK" originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 15:30:00 EST. With rumors predicting the imminent disappearance of the PlayStation 3's 80GB model and its subsequent substitution by a new SKU in America, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has chimed in and told GamesIndustry.biz that it currently has no plans to introduce a 120GB PS3 to the UK. Whereas the rumored 120GB - 160GB PS3 (with Dual Shock 3 controller) would take the retired 80GB model's place in the US, there would be no ex-SKUs to do the same in the UK. The 40GB system is the only in-production model currently being sold in the European region.

As for the arrival of a new PlayStation 3 in America, Sony is sticking to its silenced "no comment" guns.
No plans for 120GB PS3 in UK, says Sony originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 08:00:00 EST. An Ars Technica "mole" reports that the 80GB PS3 is indeed out and will be replaced by a 120- or 160GB PS3 with a DualShock 3 controller at the same price point ($499). Beyond the extra gigglebytes and the rumbling controller, the "mole" had nothing else to add; questions regarding backwards compatibility, USB ports and other such incidentals will have to wait for another day.

CVG spoke with Sony Europe which dismissed the story as "rumour and speculation." Sony America gave us a similar response, minus the British "u." A Sony America spokesperson said, "As you know, we don't comment on rumor or speculation." For those keeping track, the emergence of a new PS3 model would be the <strike>fifth</strike>, <strike>sixth</strike>, <strike>fourth</strike> *mumble* SKU ... actually, we've lost count.

Read: Mole: 80GB PS3 dead, 120-160GB with Dual Shock 3 incoming
Read: Sony Europe responds

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
Rumor: 120 - 160 GB PS3 with rumble in the pipeline originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jan 2008 11:30:00 EST. Ars Technica's seemingly reliable inside source has snuck out of the shadows with another interesting bit of hardware "news". We know that the 80GB PS3 is being discontinued, even if Sony won't admit to it themselves. The rumour is that another SKU (for those of you playing at home, that's the fifth since launch) will take the place of the 80GB, and will come bundled with a Dual Shock 3 controllers. Prices will stay the same, but the new SKU will have a 120-160GB hard drive.

The article doesn't indicate whether the new SKU will have backwards compatibility, memory card readers, more than two USB ports or, you know, whether it even really exists. We're not convinced that this is the best idea - the 40GB has been the only SKU available in Europe for a wee while now and it's doing great. Why such a big hard drive? Is there something coming soon that is going to require so much storage space? We know Sony have been discussing video and music downloads for quite some time, so is it finally on the horizon?

Speculation on this can go on forever. We're going to remain skeptical until something concrete appears. If it's anything like the 40GB or 80GB revelations, we'll know it's coming a few weeks before it's "announced".
Rumour: 120GB+ PS3 on its way in rumble bundle? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jan 2008 09:35:00 EST. As part of Amazon.com's Deal of the Day, today and today only they're knocking off $40 and offering the 120GB HDD for "only" $139. Not too shabby, eh? But if you're interested you better check your bank accounts quickly, because this daily deal ends tonight and the $139 price tag will revert back to original $179 status and the evil in the world will corrupt your soul. Well, maybe that's a bit much, but trust us when we say this deal will disappear tonight

[Thanks, Ben Koca]
Today only, get a 120GB HDD for $139 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Sep 2007 18:30:00 EST. We've chosen the lucky winner of the 120GB hard drive and that winner is ... Noxat! Congratulations on your glorious (and completely random) victory! We'd also like to tell you that you've now made life at Fanboy Towers a living hell. Seriously, Li'l Chief will be pouting for months. Thanks a lot, Noxat. Thanks a lot.

For all the fanboys out there that weren't lucky enough to win (and there were a lot of you), take heart because we've got more giveaways coming. Once verified, we'll post the name of the winner so that he or she can gloat and the rest can grumble.]

As you can see, Li'l Chief loves his 120GB Hard Drive, but it's September and it's high time we started giving away some swag in celebration of Halo 3. To kick things off, we're giving away one 120GB Hard Drive, which includes a transfer kit so you don't lose what's on your crummy old 20GB HDD. With one of these babies, you could store all the media you want and a bag of chips*. As you may be aware, 120GB Hard Drives cost precisely <strike>1 million dollars</strike> $179.99, which is no small sum. We're betting that most of our readers would probably prefer to have one for free, so here's your chance to win. All you have to do is:

Post a comment below. You can say whatever you want, but keep it civil, m'kay? Be sure you only post one comment. Posters of multiple comments will be disqualified.

Entries will be accepted until Friday, September 7th at 11:00AM ET

On Friday we'll choose our winner at random and notify said winner via email. Once verified, we'll post the winner so that he or she can gloat about how they "never run out of space."

The giveaway is open to U.S. residents only, ages 13 or older (younger children need clearly defined boundaries, and 20GB is enough for them)

If you'd like to read the official rules (and who wouldn't?) you can find them here. Best of luck to everyone, and keep an eye out for more giveaways this month!

*Warning, under no circumstances should you attempt to store a bag of chips in your 120GB HDD.
Fanswag: Win a 120GB Hard Drive for Xbox 360 [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Sep 2007 12:00:00 EST. In the case of hard drives, 360 accessories are ridiculously expensive. As a service to our readers, we bring you the news that you can snag a 20GB 360 HDD for the tempting price of $49.90 from GoGamer.com (for now at least). Add $2.59 for shipping and you've got a brand new hard drive for $52.49. Not bad. But wait! there's more. Why grab a measly 20GB HDD when you can get a 120GB HDD for the bargain price of $144.99 ($35 off retail)? Head over to Newegg.com and you can purchase one for $164.99. Just slap on the promo code "Paypal20" and pay with PayPal and you'll get an additional $20 off. After shipping, you'll pay somewhere in the range of $150. Again, not bad.

Read -- 20GB deal at GoGamer
Read -- 120GB deal at Newegg

[Via TechBargains. And thanks to Major Nelson's data transfer demo, the whole process will be painless. In the embedded video above, Major and <strike>his clothes twin</strike> Albert walk you through the whole thing step by step and even do a little Xbox 360 Elite unboxing to boot. It's actually quite simple and should take less than an hour to move all your data to your new 120GB behemoth. And, as if it wasn't mentioned enough, the data transfer will be permanent and can only be done once. The HDDHackr program uses the newly found 120GB signature and will allow anyone to use a specific 120GB WD HDD for their 360 storage saving roughly $100 over Microsoft's official Xbox 360 120GB HDD. Though, you'll need to be somewhat familiar with hacking programs and PC hardware setup to get the drive up and running. But, if that's your thing, you can save big bucks and up your Xbox 360 hard drive capacity to 120GB the l33t way. So, is anyone up for the challenge?
Save some cash, use your own 120GB HDD originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 10:45:00 EST. You know, it's black, has HDMI and a 120GB hard drive, and it's super cool. You may have heard that the Elite has been utterly gutted, all of its vitals exposed to the world. It just so happens the 120GB hard drive was part of this dismantling process. With the drive cracked open and exposed, we can finally see the wondrous, ultra high-tech hard drive that justifies Microsoft's $179 price tag. Or can we?

It turns out that the drive inside the plastic case is in fact a Fujitsu MHW2120BH 2.5" laptop drive. Shindakun.net did some Google searching and discovered that these drives generally cost around $100. Not long ago, Aaron Greenberg stated that the drive in the Xbox 360 is comparable to a self-powered external hard drive for a PC. Alright, so there must be some sort of additional work that justifies an $80 increase above retail, right? The thing is, according to Shindakun, the 360 drive isn't self powered. You have to shut down the console to install it, because it's just an SATA drive with a proprietary connector. So, where does the extra cost come from? The plastic casing isn't that nice. Granted, there are R&D costs to consider, but $80 extra per unit seems a little steep. Without a direct explanation of the costs from Microsoft, we can make only one conclusion: we're getting ripped off.

Buyer beware.
120GB 360 HDD worth only $100 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Apr 2007 17:30:00 EST. In particular, the price of its hard drive has been the most difficult to stomach. $99 dollars for 20 gigabytes seems positively ludicrous in today's world of cheap storage. The new 120GB hard drive isn't much better, clocking in at $179. Microsoft has defended the pricing structure, saying that they demand very strict specifications from manufacturers (things like drive speed, security, etc.), but it's hard to believe it couldn't be had for less.

Enter one lucky 360 fanboy by the name of Scooter. Scooter spotted a 120GB hard drive at his local Wal-Mart. Looking closer, the drive was priced at a cool $99.88. Seizing upon the opportunity, he asked a clerk to open up the case and ring it up. Of course, once the item was scanned, it came up as $172. After a quick interchange with customer service, it's revealed that Wal-Mart store policy requires that items be sold for the price at which they are marked (even if the price is incorrect). So, he walks out with a 120GB drive for a full $80 less than retail price.

Granted, we're sure the display price was corrected immediately following the sale, but it's nice to hear that at least one fanboy managed to stick it to the man. Our advice: scour your area Wal-Marts for mislabeled hard drives. You might end up with a killer deal. Follow the "read" link for photographic proof of the $99 120GB HDD.

[Thanks, Scooter]
120 GB hard drive snagged for $99 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Apr 2007 12:45:00 EST. As such, Microsoft has received quite a bit of flack for the pricing of the unit. Major Nelson himself got an earful from us on the subject during the latest Fancast. Aaron Greenberg, group product manager at Microsoft, recently defended the 120GB HDD price in an interview with GameTheory. Greenberg noted a few reasons for Microsoft's pricing decision, among them that Microsoft requires stringent specifications for drive performance. In other words, they have to perform at specific speeds to provide an optimal gaming experience, and they must provide a certain level of security. Greenberg also notes that the 120 gig HDD price is comparable to other self-powered external hard drives on the market. Greenberg's statements are in line with what we heard from Major Nelson.

Additionally, Greenberg notes that the pricing structure is consistent with the rest of the Xbox line. As he puts it, the $299 core becomes the $399 premium by adding a $99 hard drive. By adding a $179 hard drive to the core, you get the $479 price of the Xbox 360 Elite.

Sure, there are some expensive external hard drives out there, but we don't buy that Microsoft can't find comparable drives at lower prices. There are plenty of 120GB drives out there for much less than $179. Are we to believe that all of them fail to meet Microsoft's specifications?

[Via Joystiq]
MS defends the $179 120GB HDD originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Apr 2007 14:30:00 EST. Sure, you can pay $200 for a 120GB drive if you really want to, but as with most products, there are plenty of deals to be had; unless you're locked into buying peripherals from a single manufacturer that controls its monopolistic pricing with a proprietary vice-grip. Which, in the case of the Xbox 360 ... you are. Though if Greenberg had said, "We own you. Deal with it," that might not have been as good for PR.

They own you. First off, all the preloaded content will be available on both the Xbox 360 Elite hard drive and the seperate retail version. As far as content goes, everything that's preloaded on the 20GB model will be included on the new 120GB drive. We kind of expected this since the new drive is huge ... uber huge. This 120GB behemoth will also come preloaded with a bunch of other content not available on the 20GB drive including demos like Lost Planet, Street Fighter II, and Call of Duty 3. You'll also see more trailers, gamer pictures, and themes, all of which you can delete instantly or savor for the long run. A full list of the 120GB HDD's preloaded content can be found after the break.

[Thanks, Derka]
Continue reading Preloaded content revealed for 120GB HDD

Preloaded content revealed for 120GB HDD originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Mar 2007 09:30:00 EST. Much to the relief of 360 owners everywhere, we now know that the 120GB drive will come with a transfer cable allowing users to transfer data from the 20GB drive to the 120GB drive. Sounds great, right? Don't answer that yet, because Joystiq has uncovered a few caveats to Microsoft's transfer solution. Do you have two 20GB hard drives? You'd better pick a favorite then, because the transfer software allows only one 20GB drive to be transferred to the 120GB drive. Maybe you have data on your 120 GB drive you'd like to stick on the 20GB. Too bad, because you can only transfer from the 20GB to the 120GB. Any other combination -- transferring 20GB to 20GB for example -- won't work.

As if all that wasn't bad enough, transferring data automatically deletes any data already stored on the 120GB drive, and all files transfered will be deleted from the 20GB. Finally, data cannot be transfered back to the 20GB from which it originally came. Of course, some of these issues can be nullified by purchasing a memory card -- a financial fact of which we're sure Microsoft is aware -- but the data transfer cable seems unnecessarily restrictive. Essentially, it will only be useful one time, unless you really want to format your 120GB HDD for some reason.

[Via Joystiq]
120GB HDD transfer limited to one 20GB HDD originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Mar 2007 13:30:00 EST. Well ... not when it comes with some fairly crippling conditions. Wired has the skinny on some of the small print on Microsoft's new little "Elite" storage device:

You cannot put the data from two or more 20 GB hard disks onto one 120 GB hard disk. If you attempt to move multiple drives, only the last one you move will be stored.

You can only move data from the 20GB Hard Disk to the 120 GB Hard Disk. Transferring data in the other direction, or any other combination, is not possible.

Any data stored on the 120 GB hard disk will be automatically deleted.

Any data stored on the 20 GB hard disk will be automatically deleted after it is moved over.

Once you move the data over, it cannot be placed back on the original hard disk.

That first bullet point sticking out at ya, just a bit? It might rub a lot of people the wrong way, especially since Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg told everyone to buy two 20GB HDDs back when they released all of the TV and movie content, and people were worried storing everything. Zoinks.

It's hard to think about people not getting just a bit cheesed about this. If you have two hard drives, that Microsoft told you to buy, and then when they finally release the new bigger drive and then tell you that you can only put one drive's worth of good on it, that's a pretty bitter pill they're asking you to swallow.

We've contacted Microsoft to get some answers on how that data cable does its business.
New Xbox 360 120GB HDD comes with a lot of conditions originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Mar 2007 12:57:00 EST. Didn't think so. Today, TheDiggMan posted a screenshot from his online Gamestop searching where he stumbled upon the rumored 120GB Xbox 360 hard drive. Soon, after TheDiggMan found the listed 120GB HDD the item was taken down from the website, pulled by the Gamestop webmaster gnomes.

We're 97.4% sure that a 120GB HDD will be releasing soon, but what's interesting about this screenshot is the ship date and price information. $150 isn't a horrible price point seeing that it's $50 more than the 20GB HDD, but it's still a darn expensive peripheral. And if the April 1st pre-release date is correct we'll be putting all this HDD and Elite speculation to rest, because Microsoft should be making an announcement soon. Fanboys, if you're looking for more hard drive space, will you be purchasing the new Xbox 360 Elite or the seperate 120GB HDD add on? You know, that is if they are real.

[Via Digg]
Gamestop's accidental 120GB HDD preorder originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Mar 2007 13:00:00 EST. Yesterday, Ben over at ars technica expressed his concern for how to transfer HDD data from his old 360 to the new Elite 360 if he were to purchase one. Not soon after Ben received a tip from a person who works at a large video game distributor (who wanted to remain anonymous) and divulged an answer to the data transfer problem ... an included cable. The tipster went on to say that,

"MS has told us that the data will be transferred via some sort of cable that will be included with the unit. The cable will also be included w/ the 120GB drive that will be sold separately (price TBD)."

Again, this is a whole basket full of rumor berries, but if it were true would it sway your opinion on a new Elite 360 purchase? A HDD to HDD data transfer cable would be a great accessory anyway and with the release of a 120GB HDD one would think it'd be a no brainer. Or maybe we're all just geniuses.

[Via Digg]
Rumor: Cable to transfer HDD data to Elite 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Mar 2007 13:00:00 EST. It'll supposedly have an HDMI port, and feature a 120GB drive in it, making it well worth it, particularly if it is priced the same as the current consoles. Now we have video of the system in question (codenamed Zephyr), and if you ask us it looks fairly real. Of course, as sister-site Xbox 360 Fanboy points out, the Linux penguin in the shot makes us very suspicious. Plus that plug/adapter setup at the rear of the 360 looks fairly nasty.

Normally when people mod consoles they add things like Christmas tree lights, liquid-cooling, and a built-in popcorn popper. Which doesn't mean that this thing is real, but so far we're still buying it, and we'll really be buying it when it hits a store near us. HDMI and a much bigger hard drive? Yes, please.
Video: the rumored Xbox 360 v2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 06 Jan 2007 16:25:00 EST.
