The next addition to the game will be mounted combat, the <a href="http://www.bethblog.com/2012/05/24/mounted-combat-arrives-in-latest-skyrim-update/">Bethesda blog</a> has revealed. Finally you will no longer need to dismount before you <em>punch that dragon to death</em>.<br /><br />There's no word on when the update will be available on consoles right now, but if you've got the game on Steam, you can <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/23/beta-test-skyrim-1-4-on-steam-if-you-dare/">opt into the beta version</a> and test out mounted combat in <em>Skyrim</em> immediately. Today, however, the game is a full 20 years old, and id Software is throwing the classic FPS a celebration. Rather than sending all the game's fans party hats and individual slices of cake, though, id's ported <em>Wolf 3D</em> <a href="http://wolfenstein.bethsoft.com/">to web browsers</a>, making it totally free!<br /><br />But perhaps you're not around a computer at the moment, and you'd prefer to play on the go? id's got that covered too, making the iOS port of <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> free for today only (<a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wolfenstein-3d-classic-platinum/id309470478?mt=8">the iTunes page</a> still reflects a $1.99 price as of this writing, but Bethesda says it'll flip to free "later today").<br /><br />Or maybe you've already played <em>Wolf 3D</em> more than you'll ever need to? Creator John Carmack recorded a director commentary aimed at superfans of the series, which we've embedded just below the break. Let us know if he talks about rockets at all!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/wolfenstein-3d-celebrating-its-20-year-history-by-going-free-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wolfenstein 3D celebrating its 20-year history by going free on browsers, iOS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/wolfenstein-3d-celebrating-its-20-year-history-by-going-free-on/">Wolfenstein 3D celebrating its 20-year history by going free on browsers, iOS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 May 2012 10:30:00 EST. The game has been in development since 2007 by a team of 250, according to a post on <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=472749">NeoGAF</a>. It will feature full voice acting throughout and will be played from a third-person perspective (generally not the most efficient way to play previous Elder Scrolls titles). As mentioned in yesterday's announcement, <em>The Elder Scrolls Online</em> takes place 1000 years in the past and will span almost all of Tamriel, though certain areas are being saved for the purposes of future expansions.<br /><br />Zenimax Online is reportedly doing its best to strike a balance between the Elder Scrolls series and traditional MMOs, trying to appeal to players of both. In other words, yes, expect to use a traditional MMO hotbar to access your skills. You can also expect epic player-vs-player battles - up to 100-vs-100 in some instances - as factions compete to take over Cyrodil's Imperial City, with the winning faction installing its greatest champion as emperor. The NeoGAF post has plenty of other details and, of course, July's issue of Game Informer has even more.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-elder-scrolls-online-concept-art/">The Elder Scrolls Online (Concept Art)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-elder-scrolls-online-concept-art/#5003809"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/elderscrollsonline01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-elder-scrolls-online-concept-art/#5003810"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/elderscrollsonline02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-elder-scrolls-online-concept-art/#5003811"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/elderscrollsonline03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-elder-scrolls-online-concept-art/#5003812"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/elderscrollsonline04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-elder-scrolls-online-concept-art/#5003813"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/elderscrollsonline05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/04/first-elder-scrolls-online-details-unfurled/">First Elder Scrolls Online details unfurled</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 May 2012 10:00:00 EST. That's a lot of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/08/skyrims-fall-of-the-space-core-mod-may-be-hiding-a-portal-2-que/">hanging out with space cores</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/07/snap-into-a-skyrim-with-the-macho-men-mod/">dragons modeled after Randy Savage</a>.<br /><br />The top mods represented on Steam's Workshop as of this writing aren't adding or subtracting major things from the original game. Many extend the experience in minor ways - bolstered sound offerings, more robust map markers, new spells - while a few add whole new quests. Thankfully, <em>Skyrim</em>'s mod community moved away from its obsession with clean faces. At least for today.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/steam-workshops-skyrim-mods-top-over-13-6-million-downloads-ma/">Steam Workshop's Skyrim mods top over 13.6 million downloads, Macho Man is pleased</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 May 2012 11:15:00 EST. Bethesda announced the name of the pack today, simply saying it was coming to Xbox 360, and that more info would be available come E3.<br /><br />The announcement comes over six months since the lands of the north were opened to adventurers, and <em>former</em> adventurers who once took an arrow ... well, <em>you know</em>. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/13/skyrims-voice-enabled-dragon-shouts-arrive-the-week-of-april-2/">free Kinect update</a> adds over 200 different voice recognition commands to English-speaking regions; there are a bunch of new things to memorize, so Bethesda made a handy glossary for you to load up on your iPad or print out. The .pdf files can be accessed by <a href="http://cdnstatic.bethsoft.com/akqacms/files/tes/extras/skyrim-kinect-voice-commands.pdf">clicking here</a>.<br /><br />Simply boot up <em>Skyrim</em> and install the mandatory Xbox 360 update tomorrow. After spending some time with it ourselves earlier this month, we liked how it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/20/talking-my-way-through-skyrims-free-kinect-update/">bypassed a lot of menu work</a>. The <a href="http://www.bethblog.com/2012/04/30/skyrim-kinect-support-arrives-tomorrow/">Bethesda Blog</a> says the German, Italian, Spanish and French versions are all "in final testing" and that we should hear more regarding those territories soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/skyrim-kinect-patch-out-tomorrow-heres-a-list-of-voice-command/">Skyrim Kinect patch out tomorrow; here's a list of voice commands</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 20:30:00 EST. In an email missive early this morning, Bethesda announced Mikami's project as "the realization of *pure* survival horror" (Bethesda's asterisks, not ours), and included a collage of various environments in <em>Zwei</em>, "that communicate the tone and direction that the production is taking."<br /><br />Mikami said true survival horror is a situation "in which the player confronts and overcomes fear." From that note, we can only assume that the Black Eyed Peas <em>must</em> play some role in <em>Zwei</em>. Mikami added, "I've found my focus and once again I'm striving for pure survival horror. I am being very hands-on in the development of this game to ensure that the quality is there. Rest assured."<br /><br />As reported earlier, the game is still in the initial stages of development (as evidenced by the collage of environments above). It's expected to launch on "HD consoles" at some point in 2013.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/26/bethesda-teases-first-concept-of-mikamis-zwei-explains-what/">Bethesda teases first concept of Mikami's 'Zwei,' explains what 'pure survival horror' means</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Apr 2012 16:30:00 EST. The new slew of screens depict more of the madness we've seen in previous <em>Dishonored</em> media: giant walkers, stabby knives, and ... let's call them "ladies of the night." The name (codename?) of Mikami's project was revealed to Famitsu in a recent interview (interpreted by <a href="http://andriasang.com/con0st/shinji_mikami_zwei_interview/">Andriasang</a>, via <a href="http://hokanko-alt.ldblog.jp/archives/67468292.html">Sokuho</a>), wherein Mikami says the game will be of the survival horror variety, drawing on his past work with the Resident Evil series.<br /><br />The interview also reveals that the game is still rather early in development - not entirely unexpected for a game not due for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/expect-shinji-mikamis-next-game-in-2013-or-beyond/">at least another year</a> - and that Mikami is content in his relationship with Maryland-based publisher Bethesda Softworks.<br /><br />Little else is known about the title, with Mikami only saying that the game is intended for "HD consoles." As for the name? "Zwei" is tied to the German for "two," but Mikami says the name has no connection to the game's content.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/25/resident-evils-mikami-welcomes-bethesda-to-the-world-of-surviva/">Resident Evil's Mikami welcomes Bethesda to the world of survival horror</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 13:15:00 EST. Rumors suggest development is troubled, with Human Head Studios having suspended work on the FPS since November 2011.<br /><br />Word comes from a source close to <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/article/73417/source-human-head-hasnt-worked-on-prey-2-since-november">Shacknews</a>, who claims work was intentionally stopped in the hopes of negotiating better contract terms with Bethesda owner Zenimax. Many employees were reportedly laid off as a result, with Human Head aiming to rehire them once the contract was satisfactory. According to the source, the game was in limbo until March, when things finally "soured."<br /><br />Bethesda claimed the delay was "due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year." Beyond that, the company wouldn't comment on the future or in what shape <em>Prey 2</em> is in.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/rumor-prey-2-development-suspended-since-november/">Rumor: Prey 2 development suspended since November</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 22:00:00 EST. Maybe you missed out on the Raven Software-deveolped <em>Quake 4</em> during its initial launch, way back when in 2005? Bethesda is giving everyone a second chance to take on the Strogg this summer.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.bethblog.com/2012/04/11/quake-4-returns-to-xbox-360/">Bethesda Blog</a> has announced that the Xbox 360 version of <em>Quake 4</em> is being re-released at a new $19.99 price point on June 19. Currently, the only ways to pick up a copy of <em>Quake 4</em> are through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/steam">Steam</a> (on Windows PC) and at the bottom of your local game retailer's bargain bin.<br /><br />Or maybe your cousin Carl? As <a href="http://pc.ign.com/articles/122/1221532p1.html">IGN</a> notes, GDC talks planned for the game were cut a few weeks before the show.<br /><br />This isn't the first time this year a high-profile Bethesda title made its way into the rumored cancellation mill, as <em>DOOM 4</em> went through the experience twice in six month. In fact, you need 5 years of development experience, so not being born yet is actually a big disadvantage.<br /><br />The listing doesn't give much of a clue as to the technology Bethesda is targeting with its future <em>Elder Scrolls</em> or <em>Fallout</em> or whatever -- applicants need experience programming for PS3 and Xbox, and DirectX 11 experience is "a plus."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/27/bethesda-hiring-future-generation-console-programmers/">Bethesda hiring 'Future Generation Console Programmers'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 14:00:00 EST. (We jest!)<br /><br />Bethesda warns that only players affected by the issues found after the break should download the update. Remember to back up any save files if you plan to go down the beta route.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/20/skyrim-beta-update-1-4-26-live-on-steam/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Skyrim beta update 1.4.26 live on Steam</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/20/skyrim-beta-update-1-4-26-live-on-steam/">Skyrim beta update 1.4.26 live on Steam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Feb 2012 20:00:00 EST. Bethesda's double pack will feature the standard edition of both games, at $29.99 for Xbox 360 or $19.99 for PC.<br /><br />Bethesda isn't allowed to release the double pack on PS3, Pete Hines told Joystiq. "We will continue to work to try to change that, but at present it is still not approved," he said. "We would like to release a PS3 version a well."<br /><br />Seeing as <em>Fallout 3</em> launched in 2008 and <em>Oblivion</em> in 2006, it's about time they settled down, found a partner and relinquished their previous $60 lifestyle. Of course the age gap may upset a few people since two years is, like, 80 years in video game time, but they'll get over it. More than 2 million mods have been downloaded from Steam's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Steam-Workshop/">Skyrim Workshop</a>, and players have published more than 2,500 mods since its launch on February 2, Bethesda says. Mods range from Valve's own <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/08/skyrims-fall-of-the-space-core-mod-may-be-hiding-a-portal-2-que/">Fall of the Space Core</a>, to graphics updates, varied weapons options, mechanics changes and posh mudcrabs, as seen in the "best of" video above.<br /><br /><em>Skyrim </em>outsold all Steam games three-to-one in its first month, and it outsold all exclusive titles for both PS3 and Xbox 360, Bethesda claims. The average Steam user has played <em>Skyrim </em>for more than 75 hours, which is a ridiculously high <em>average</em>. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-3"><em>Modern Warfare 3</em></a> outsold <em>Skyrim </em>for the year, but <em>Skyrim </em>was the second-most-successful title of 2011, beating other blockbusters such as EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/battlefield-3"><em>Battlefiled 3</em></a>. And it doesn't even have multiplayer!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/14/skyrims-pc-fans-are-modding-the-crap-out-of-it-with-steam-works/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Skyrim's PC fans are modding the crap out of it with Steam Workshop</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/14/skyrims-pc-fans-are-modding-the-crap-out-of-it-with-steam-works/">Skyrim's PC fans are modding the crap out of it with Steam Workshop</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Feb 2012 22:00:00 EST. At last night's New York Video Game Critics Circle Awards, the Bethesda Game Studios-developed RPG took home yet one more, earning the "Big Apple Award for Best Game" as decided by a <a href="http://nygamecritics.com/2012/01/09/who-are-we-a-list-of-members/">cabal of NY-based game journos</a> from various outlets.<br /><br />Other winners include two apiece for <em>Bastion</em> and <em>Portal 2</em>, portable love for <em>Super Mario 3D Land</em> and <em>Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP</em>, and explosive nods to both <em>Crysis 2</em> and <em>Saints Row: The Third</em>. Harold Goldberg's "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" took home the "Algonquin Roundtable Award for Best Book" and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/05/playstation-characters-say-thanks-in-awesome-new-ad/">Sony's "Michael" commercial</a> won the "Mad Men Award," mysteriously beating out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/ocarina-of-time-3ds-ad-starring-robin-williams-his-daughter-an/">Robin Williams' luxurious beard</a>. Frankly, we were <em>baffled</em>. The full list of winners can be found below the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/03/skyrim-takes-top-honors-at-ny-video-game-critics-circle-awards/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Skyrim takes top honors at NY Video Game Critics Circle Awards</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/03/skyrim-takes-top-honors-at-ny-video-game-critics-circle-awards/">Skyrim takes top honors at NY Video Game Critics Circle Awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Feb 2012 18:00:00 EST. But series fans know that they can take the game a few steps further into crazytown with mods, as we've seen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skyrim,mod">over the past few months</a>. Bethesda knows this too, clearly, as the developer is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/20/skyrim-1-4-detailed-pc-creation-kit-for-mods-coming-soon/">releasing a Creation Kit sometime soon</a> which will allow users to more easily mod and share creations for <em>Skyrim</em>.<br /><br />Interestingly, the company notes in its developer diary that it's "going to keep looking for ways to get mods to more people, and hopefully one day to our console audience," but comes up short of saying anything more concrete. Frankly, we'd love to be able to snap into a <em>Skyrim</em> with our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/07/snap-into-a-skyrim-with-the-macho-men-mod/">fellow Macho Man fans</a> out there (oooooh yeah!), but we simply don't have a PC strong enough.<br /><br />The Creation Kit will support Steam Workshop, allowing mods to be shared via Steam users easily. We'd suggest pushing that Steam Workshop support to PS3 given Steam's past with Sony's home console, but then we also know of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/10/skyrims-ps3-stuttering-bug-to-be-squashed-this-month/"><em>Skyrim</em>'s ugly past with the PS3</a>. Rather than longingly glare at a web page for all of the fixes coming to your plagued save files, you have another option, granted you're playing the game on PC: you can opt into a beta version of the new update. Just make sure you back up all of your save files and other pertinent <em>things</em> first, mmkay?<br /><br />If you want in, all you have to do is load up Steam, go into your Account tab under the Settings section and click "change" on Beta Participation. A drop-down menu will appear; select "Skyrim Beta" and, after restarting your Steam client, you should be good to go. And if you want to stop playing the beta version, all you need to do is go back into settings and opt out -- sorry, yelling at your monitor simply won't get it done this time, folks.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/23/beta-test-skyrim-1-4-on-steam-if-you-dare/">Beta test Skyrim 1.4 on Steam (if you dare)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 21:30:00 EST. <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/skyrim">Skyrim</a></em>'s 1.4 update, which is not a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/15/skyrim-patch-1-3-up-for-xbox-360/">patch</a> of a previous <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/30/users-reporting-issues-with-skyrim-1-2-patch/">patch</a>, should be finalized by next week and submitted to console manufacturers for certification, as well as release on PC. Bethesda also plans to allow PC users to opt-in to "beta" versions of future patches through Steam, we're guessing so the company can opt-out of launching a patch if significant issues are found.<br />
<br />
The publisher also announced that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/bethesda-confirms-skyrim-mod-support-will-release-creation-kit/">Creation Kit</a> and Steam Workshop are nearly ready, and it is working with Valve and its modding community to do some final testing. To think, people will be able to mod back in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/bethesda-teaching-dragons-to-fly-correctly-in-skyrims-next-patc/">backwards flying dragons</a> and add even more of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/skyrim-mod-replaces-dragons-with-my-little-pony/"><em>My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic</em></a> crew if they want -- and, honestly, who couldn't use a little more <a href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=rainbow+dash&amp;oq=rainbow+dash&amp;aq=f&amp;aqi=g10&amp;aql=&amp;gs_sm=e&amp;gs_upl=1171l3840l0l4108l14l12l0l3l3l1l193l1283l2.7l9l0">Rainbow Dash</a> in their lives?<br />

Remember when <em>Doom</em> was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/25/doom-double-d-dodgeball-pulled-from-xbla/">pulled off of Xbox Live Arcade</a> over a year ago because of "expiring rights" (i.e. Zenimax <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/bethesda-parent-company-buys-id-software/">acquired Id Software</a>)? Do you also remember that Zenimax stated that the game would be back up "soon," courtesy of Bethesda? Well then, good news because "soon" is apparently today! Bethesda has sent out a note announcing that the original <em>Doom</em> has <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/DOOM/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410824?DownloadType=Game#LiveZone">returned XBLA</a>.<br />

The granddaddy of modern shooters will set you back $5 and features both co-op and versus multiplayer via Xbox Live.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/18/doom-stalking-xblas-corridors-once-again/">Doom stalking XBLA's corridors once again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 13:00:00 EST. The great secret Bethesda hasn't revealed to anyone yet is that citizens of <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/skyrim">Skyrim</a></em> are actually learning, adapting and evolving. If you set your PC or console forward a couple thousand years, you'll be able to play <em>Skyrim</em> in a modern setting, as seen in this clip.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/12/skyrim-if-it-were-set-in-2012/">Skyrim, if it were set in 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 02:00:00 EST. id Software's parent company, Bethesda Softworks, confirmed with Joystiq this afternoon that an unknown quantity of employees at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> development studio have been let go. "As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go," the statement reads.<br />

Despite the layoffs, the publisher additionally noted that it is "still recruiting and hiring qualified developers" for id Software, and that "development work on future id titles continues unabated." id Software is currently working on <em>Doom 4</em>, the next entry in a long-running franchise for the studio, as it has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/doom-4-announced-id-software-hiring/">for the past four-ish years</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/10/bethesda-confirms-layoffs-at-id-software-work-on-future-id-tit/">Bethesda confirms layoffs at id Software: 'Work on future id titles continues unabated'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 15:04:00 EST. When Bethesda's Twitter account invited fans to "tune in tomorrow" (that's today) for a "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/skyrim"><em>Skyrim</em></a> tweak guide livestream," one follower pointedly asked the question so many PlayStation 3 <em>Skyrim</em> players out there want to know about the upcoming 1.4 patch to the game: "What about PS3 lag?????" You see, the game has some major memory issues on the PS3, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/05/report-skyrim-ps3-still-problematic-post-patch/3">making the game chug</a> as the player's save files weigh down the console. It appears that the next patch, 1.4, will correct this "lag" issue.<br />
<br />
"We're addressing that in the 1.4 update," <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Bethblog">Bethesda's Twitter account</a> responded. The account also noted that the patch will be available at some point "this month." And though we imagine that folks waiting for the update would much prefer something more specific, that's the only launch window we've got for now, unfortunately. So you know, there are only 21 days left in January.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/10/skyrims-ps3-stuttering-bug-to-be-squashed-this-month/">Skyrim's PS3 stuttering bug to be 'addressed' this month, Bethesda says</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 11:40:00 EST. A mighty warrior stands in a frozen, Beowulfian wilderness, surrounded by traditional characters and archetypes: kings, damsels, wizards, trolls, dragons and, yes, a quest that promises both personal glory and salvation for the downtrodden. The reward at the end of the quest? Our hero gets to learn <em>a new word</em>.<br />

On paper, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/skyrim"><em>Skyrim</em></a> sounds like your high school English teacher's ultimate fantasy. In practice, it is one of 2011's greatest adventures. That is, of course, assuming you can keep your mind on the quest at hand.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/04/joystiq-top-10-of-2011-skyrim/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq Top 10 of 2011: Skyrim</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/04/joystiq-top-10-of-2011-skyrim/">Joystiq Top 10 of 2011: Skyrim</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Jan 2012 16:00:00 EST. The ongoing <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/fallout-immo">legal battle</a> between Bethesda and Interplay regarding the <em>Fallout MMO</em> is rumored to have reached a critical turning point. According to Fallout fan site <a href="http://www.duckandcover.cx/#10338">Duck and Cover</a>, the two companies have reached a settlement. Specifics of the settlement are reportedly set to be revealed later this month.<br />
<br />
Joystiq is unable to confirm whether or not the settlement has actually taken place, though the rumor appears to be in line with what we've heard from our own sources. <br />
<br />
In October, Bethesda tried -- and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/26/work-on-fallout-mmo-can-continue-for-now-bethesda-injunction-ap/">failed</a> -- to impose a preliminary injunction on Interplay, which allowed the latter to continue work on the beleaguered project. Will the <em>Fallout MMO</em> manage to make its proposed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/22/interplay-fallout-online-in-second-half-of-2012/">late 2012 launch window</a>? We should have an answer soon enough.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/03/rumor-fallout-mmo-lawsuit-settled-details-coming-this-month/">Rumor: Fallout MMO lawsuit settled, details coming this month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 17:45:00 EST.
