According to this informant, it will star an auto mechanic named Rick, who is trying to rebuild a plane in order to escape from the zombie-infected Los Perdidos, California, before a bomb destroys the town.

The purported game will feature a theme of illegal immigration, the source claims. An "underground" group of infected people avoid government registration, becoming "illegal" citizens. Another, more familiar theme will also be present: that of how hilarious and awesome it is to kill zombies with random items, as evidenced by the presence of a character whose motorcycle has a steamroller attached.

Capcom's only comment on the issue has been to tell Shacknews it's "made no announcements" regarding Dead Rising 3. It also hasn't announced anything regarding the inevitable re-release starring Frank West.
Rumor: Dead Rising 3 set in California, stars 'Rick' the mechanic originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Dec 2011 13:20:00 EST. We're never going to to be comfortable with the kind of alchemy Gaikai is capable of. Capcom has partnered with the company to offer a demo of Dead Rising 2, right in your browser. You'll be so impressed you won't even mind it's a year late!

It's the actual game, inside a browser window. Being a demo, there are some restrictions: you can't save, and you can only play for 30 minutes. But it's still enough to give you a taste of the game, and to be really impressed with Gaikai.
Gaikai powers streaming Dead Rising 2 demo originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 02:00:00 EST. New Dead Rising 2: Off the Record DLC will give Frank West some new "Cyborg Skills." Said skills don't just include things like "being able to endure painful cyber implant surgery" and "beeping." In the game, West's machine-man enhancements will add electrical damage to all regular attacks, additional damage on melee attacks, and even more attack bonuses with electrical appliances, beep.

The "Cyborg Skills Pack" will be released on Xbox 360, PC, and PS3 on October 25 for $2. Until then, you'll just have to get your fill of robot-ness by dressing up as Proto Man.

Gallery: Dead Rising 2: Off the Record (Cyborg Skills DLC)

Continue reading 'Cyborg Skills Pack' augments Dead Rising 2 Off the Record next week

'Cyborg Skills Pack' augments Dead Rising 2 Off the Record next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Oct 2011 23:00:00 EST. You've bought all three Dead Rising 2 games to date, and you've pre-ordered the fourth. How on earth can you give Capcom more money for Dead Rising 2? Don't worry -- that's what DLC is for. Four downloadable costumes have been announced for Off the Record, allowing you to make Frank, the character people wanted so badly to return, almost unrecognizable.

Each costume comes with gameplay bonuses: Cyborg Frank has an electrical attack that stuns zombies; survivors run faster when following Frank in his firefighter outfit, and he can kick down doors and more effectively use water guns; the BBQ Chef outfit confers extra firepower to ketchup and mustard, and offers some kind of bonus when using explosives. And in the "Warrior Costume," players get 25% additional PP after every attack, and an exclusive combo with the practice sword and shield.

In Japan, these will all be sold separately for 160 Microsoft Points; release plans haven't been announced for North America yet, with the exception of the Warrior costume, which is a GameStop pre-order bonus.
Grill, extinguish, or terminate zombies with Dead Rising 2: Off the Record DLC costumes originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Aug 2011 10:50:00 EST. Capcom apparently doesn't want us or anyone else knowing the launch date for upcoming Dead Rising budget spinoff, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. Though the Japanese publisher's European blog posted details of the game's release date recently -- October 11 in North America and October 14 in Europe, by the way -- the post has since been pulled. Thankfully, some quick Googling reveals that the post did in fact exist at one point.

It's always possible that the release dates were incorrect, but we're more inclined to believe it was simply posted before someone important said, "Go ahead." We've asked Capcom for confirmation, but haven't heard back as of yet.
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record goes on sale Oct. 11 in NA, Oct. 14 in EU originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Jun 2011 14:20:00 EST. Dee Jay Randall, of Capcom Vancouver (formerly Blue Castle Games), revealed during his GDC talk -- covering Dead Rising 2 multiplayer -- that two projects are currently underway at the studio.

Without going into specifics about either project, Randall spoke at great length about Capcom Vancouver's efforts to improve the overall experience of co-op game design, including minimizing network workload. Wild guess: At least one of the new projects will feature co-op.
If you picked up Dead Rising 2: Case West and are having a problem getting the "Handy Man" Achievement, which requires building all the new weapons in the DLC, it may not necessarily be that you're missing something. XBLA Fans, in its "DR2: Case West Weapons Combo Guide," notes that the "Handy Man" requires players build only the seven new weapons in the game. Apparently, if you create any other weapons before those seven, you'll have to move the save file to another device or delete it.
To celebrate the holidays, we're having twelve straight days of giveaways up through Christmas day. And while we say it's to celebrate, really ... we're simply getting rid of some of the larger packages around the ol' office.

For our second giveaway today in the 11 Days of Joyswag, With One of the Days Featuring Two Giveaways funanza, we've got the Dead Rising 2: High Stakes Edition on PS3. This deluxe Dead Rising Deux - available only from Capcom's online store - includes the game; a poker set with 100 poker chips, bloody playing cards, dice, and a dealer chip; a Fortune City visitor map (which doubles, conveniently, as a map of the game's locations); and a Terror is Reality ticket with a voucher for a "Psycho" costume and skill pack. C'mon, you deserve this. Head past the break for the skinny on how to win ... ny.
Continue reading 12 Days of Joyswag: Dead Rising 2, High Stakes Edition (PS3)

12 Days of Joyswag: Dead Rising 2, High Stakes Edition (PS3) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Dec 2010 20:00:00 EST. Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, the "most dynamic sales weapon" publisher Capcom has ever had, has surpassed the 600,000-downloaded mark. The $5 XBLA-exclusive sold another 100,000 units in October, topping the Xbox Live Arcade sales chart and apparently making it the "fastest selling" XBLA game of the year.

The full-bodied demo/prequel to Dead Rising 2 has been an incredible success, selling nearly a half million units in its first two weeks back in early September. As for Case Zero's sales impact on the full game, it certainly didn't hurt the sequel, as Capcom announced in late October it had shipped over 2 million units of the game to retailers.
Dead Rising 2: Case Zero surpasses 600K download mark originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 22:45:00 EST. Capcom has teased on its blog what appear to be the environments for Dead Rising 2: Case West. We surmise this because the screens are similar to previously released Case West images. Capcom announced this morning that Dead Rising 2 has shipped over two million units globally, making it more successful than the original zombie survival sandbox. The company also stated that the Dead Rising franchise has shipped over four million units globally. That math likely entails the couple million copies from the sequel, the "million-plus" from the original Dead Rising, and ... oh boy, whatever Dead Rising: Chop Till you Drop shipped. It's unclear if Capcom's "most dynamic sales weapon" ever, Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, would be included in there -- considering it didn't "ship" so much as "sell" half a million units on Xbox Live Arcade.

The publisher also announced that its acquisition of Blue Castle Games was approved by Canadian authorities. The studio will now be known as Capcom Game Studio Vancouver. Will CGSV be entrusted with other Capcom franchises, or will it remain in the company of the living dead?
Dead Rising 2 ships 2 million, Blue Castle Games renamed originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 10:10:00 EST. The Dead Rising 2 pre-order bonus DLC will be made available for purchase on PSN and Xbox Live Marketplace over the coming weeks. Each pack will cost $1.99 (or 160 Microsoft Points). Bonuses in the packs can be combined to form the ultimate Chuck and include:

Psychopath Pack (Oct. 12) -- Bonus when using iconic horror movie weapons (chainsaws, cleavers, axes)

Soldier of Fortune Pack (Oct. 19) -- Doubles ammo, increases shooting and headshot accuracy; special bullet spray attack when using automatics

Sports Pack (Oct. 26) -- Golf balls, basketballs, etc. bounce more before stopping. Chuck will also "earn more from gambling, gain more health while eating and drinking and not get sick from drinking too much." So, essentially, he's your fun uncle.

Ninja Pack (Nov. 2) -- Stealth mode requires zombies be closer to detect presence. Throwing items do more damage and are tossed faster; bonuses with sword weapon

So, zombies better watch out when Chuck's camouflaged with a viking helmet and ninja slippers ... or they can just laugh. Wait -- do zombies laugh or just sorta joyfully gurgle?
Dead Rising 2 offering Psycho, Ninja, Sports, Soldier DLC to all, for a price originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 15:00:00 EST. In our review of Dead Rising 2 we said the game "doesn't stray from the core principle of the original." That's a running theme in many reviews. If you thought the original Dead Rising just needed more of everything (pus-filled zombie warts and all), with the addition of a weapon creation system, it seems your purchase of the game is good to go.
The short answer to "What Would Chuck Do?" in Dead Rising 2 is: Murder the undead. But perhaps you'd like to see the long answer play out in the latest trailer for the game? Good, 'cause we've got it for you here. (Oh, and part of the answer involves giant teddy bears -- just so you know.)
Continue reading Dead Rising 2 asks 'What Would Chuck Do?'

Dead Rising 2 asks 'What Would Chuck Do?' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 18:40:00 EST. "It's the most dynamic sales weapon we have ever had in our arsenal, giving us the equivalent exposure of a multi-million pound TV campaign," Capcom's UK product manager Karl Reader told MCV. "We foresee other publishers will follow suit."

And why shouldn't they? Dead Rising 2: Case Zero has been a huge success since launching on Xbox Live a few weeks back. At TGS, Capcom announced the game was closing in on 500,000 copies sold. But is there really a way to judge its effectiveness as a marketing solution compared to more traditional sales means, such as TV, print and online ads?

Reader said Case Zero "serves as a barometer for us as a publisher, allowing us to gauge demand for the title and adjust our marketing plans for Dead Rising 2 accordingly." We can all agree Case Zero was successful as a standalone game, but there's no way to tell whether it was an effective way to market Dead Rising 2 until it launches on September 28.
Capcom calls Dead Rising 2: Case Zero 'most dynamic sales weapon' it's ever had originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 00:00:00 EST. Faaaaaantastic! Dead Rising 2: Case West will feature everyone's favorite zombie-bashing photojournalist, practicing his craft by immortalizing the undead in still pictures. Developer Blue Castle Games' president, Rob Barrett, recently told Eurogamer that Frank West's return in the sequel's DLC epilogue would be accompanied by photography gameplay. Of course, West isn't there just to snap photos -- he'll join in the survival adventure co-op style.

Dead Rising 2's $5 prologue Case Zero has been successful for Capcom, selling over half a million downloads in two weeks. The core Dead Rising 2 game shambles to North American retail next week, on September 28th. It'll be interesting to see if the demo-consuming hoard is still ravenous for the full experience.
Dead Rising 2: Case West brings photography back originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 12:04:00 EST. Here's why complaining about sequels is tough. When a company makes a sequel, gaming zealots get upset. When they decide to try something new and ditch the main character for some new guy, fans get upset. Guys, you can't have it both ways! Except you can, as Capcom evidenced by revealing its Xbox Live-exclusive "epilogue" Dead Rising 2: Case West.

In this downloadable extension to this month's zombie-filled sequel, Frank and new guy Chuck team up to mess up some zombies. See what they're up to in the trailer after the break, or the screens right there.
Capcom apparently really liked Blue Castle Games' work on Dead Rising 2, as the publisher just revealed at TGS that it has purchased the Canadian developer. Keiji Inafune, Managing Corporate Officer of Capcom, said the publisher made the acquisition because the future of Capcom will require working with other developers on games that feel like they were made in Japan, but also have that Western je ne sais quoi. The studio will henceforth be known as Capcom Game Studios Vancouver.

Taking the stage after the announcement, Rob Barret, president/CEO of Blue Castle Games, said, "We take this responsibility very seriously. Capcom games have a certain flavor ... we don't just want to make amazing games, we want to make amazing Capcom games."

Phew, that's a relief. Good thing Capcom bought the company then -- would have been awkward if Blue Castle wanted to make amazing Konami games.
Blue Castle Games acquired by Capcom originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Sep 2010 07:55:00 EST. According to andriasang.com, Dead Rising 2: Case Zero will hit Xbox Live in Japan starting September 8. The game was delayed last week, reportedly because of some inappropriate content contained in the free trial version of the game. We're not sure what's inappropriate about justly sentencing zombies to a gory death, but the issue has presumably been resolved. Would-be Japanese zombie slayers will be able to purchase the game for ¥600.

Of course, now we have to wonder if tomorrow's other undead XBLA release, Plants vs Zombies, will be deemed inappropriate as well. After all, flinging butter at an unsuspecting zombie is just wrong.
Japan investigates Dead Rising 2: Case Zero on Sep. 8 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Sep 2010 21:00:00 EST. Dead Rising 2: Case Zero is kind of difficult to judge. While it is a standalone title, it's not really a full game per se. It is, essentially, DLC for a game that hasn't been released yet, an extension of Dead Rising 2. Of course, no one has had that experience yet, meaning that Case Zero serves double duty as a demo as well. It's an interesting experiment for Capcom and for the industry in general; thankfully for Dead Rising fans, it pays off.
The shambling, groaning launch of Dead Rising 2 may still be over a month away, but that doesn't mean eager players can't start planning their zombie assaults now. Capcom has released a map of Fortune City, complete with a handy list of the various shops and locations littered about. A few locations guaranteed to house convenient implements of zombie death: SporTrance, KokoNutz Sports Town, High-Noon Shooting Range and, of course, Army Surplus Gift Store. Unfortunately, we're not seeing any cutlery stores on this thing, which could make the search for a katana a little difficult.

In other zombie slaughtering news, 360Sync has revealed the Achievements for the Dead Rising 2 prequel, Case Zero. Said Achievements are rewarded for building weapons, spending money at the pawn shop and, naturally, killing zombies.
Dead Rising 2 Fortune City map unveiled originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 12:45:00 EST. Capcom has also released a new trailer for Dead Rising 2, which you'll find after the break.

Case Zero, a standalone experience, serves as a prologue to Dead Rising 2. Chuck Greene fights to escape the town of Still Creek and obtain the Zombrex he needs to keep his daughter Katey from coming down with a case of finding human flesh yummy.

The prologue won't take a bite out of your budget: Capcom is pricing the XBLA-exclusive Case Zero at 400 Microsoft Points ($5).
Continue reading Dead Rising 2: Case Zero infects XBLA August 31

Dead Rising 2: Case Zero infects XBLA August 31 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Jul 2010 17:00:00 EST. The Dead Rising 2 Zombrex Edition, available on both PS3 and Xbox 360, includes a syringe of life-saving Zombrex medicine (which looks suspiciously like a pen), along with a Zombrex safety information card, sales brochure, and 25-page prescription pad.

The steelbook case also includes materials not related to fictional anti-undeadifying pharmaceuticals, including a Dead Rising 2 artbook, and a disc with a "Making of" featurette. The Xbox 360 version will also include the Zombrex Dead Rising Sun film, while the PS3 version will include a voucher for a dynamic theme. The Zombrex Edition will be released on the same September 28 date as the regular version, and will retail for $79.99 -- isn't it worth the extra $20 to have the peace of mind that only anti-zombie medication can provide?
What you see above is the Outbreak Pack for Dead Rising 2. It's a limited edition version of the game that comes with everything pictured: a zombie action figure, accessories, voucher for a premium theme and other console-specific goods. It'll release alongside the standard edition in Europe on October 1.

We wanted to know about the potential for a North American release, so we contacted Capcom. A rep told Joystiq "we are not bringing the Outbreak Edition to North America," yet offered that "something special will be announced for North America very soon for Dead Rising 2." As soon as we know, we'll be sure to pass the info along.
The official box art, and a new website, for the recently delayed Dead Rising 2 have shambled out. The website, TapeItOrDie.com, follows the exploits of four characters who will help you "discover exclusive content" in the zombocalypse sequel. The website is expected to update weekly, and looks like it'll be a great source for learning how to MacGyver new weapons in the game.

As for the box art, it shows protagonist Chuck Greene sporting the quite handy (for beheading) kayak paddle with duct-taped chainsaws -- if only Frank West had that for his cover shoot instead of a big old busted TV.
How much time does Dead Rising 2 developer Blue Castle Games need to get its upcoming zombie apocalypse sim ready for consumption by the living? At least one month, it seems, as the game's North American release date has been pushed back to September 28 (from a previously stated late August release). Capcom sent over word this morning of the delay, oddly pointing out that it's "happy to confirm" as much.

No explanation of the delay was offered (we're asking!), though we suspect Blue Castle probably had to re-articulate the limb separator subroutines and upscale the procedural chainsaw collision detection ... matrix. Capcom's Global Head of Production, Keiji Inafune, who started with the company over 20 years ago as an illustrator, oversees production of the publisher's major franchises, including Resident Evil, Lost Planet, Street Fighter and Dead Rising. We talked to Inafune at E3 about the design decisions and criticisms of the Dead Rising series, as well as Capcom's ongoing attempt to balance east and west game design philosophies. Capcom is doing something pretty interesting with the release of Dead Rising 2. Prior to its August 31 launch, Capcom will put out Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, an Xbox Live exclusive prequel sans co-op that takes place two years after the original and three years prior to the second game. In short: it's distilled Dead Rising 2 on a much smaller scale.
Continue reading Preview: Dead Rising 2: Case Zero (XBLA)

Preview: Dead Rising 2: Case Zero (XBLA) originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Jun 2010 20:09:00 EST. Even though things have changed for Capcom's sequel, Dead Rising 2 -- new developer in Blue Castle Games, new protagonist in Chuck Greene and a new venue that swaps out the tried-and-true mall setting for the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas -- it felt very familiar. From the largely unchanged controls to the helpful security guard passing you updates on your walkie talkie (thankfully, this time around the text is actually legible) on to the survivor escort system, Dead Rising 2 is a sequel in the most literal sense.
Continue reading Preview: Dead Rising 2 (single player)

Preview: Dead Rising 2 (single player) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 18:10:00 EST. Capcom and Playboy have reached an agreement wherein Playboy magazines and imagery will be seen throughout the world of Dead Rising 2, in the form of magazines, as well as billboards and other advertisements. Judging by the costume in one of the new screens, Fortune City is host to a Playboy Club as well.

Playboy is just one of the publications used for the game's new "magazine system," which, like Dead Rising's book system, will offer enhancements to the player's stats. Playboy imbues Chuck Greene with a "unique and special upgrade" -- good that it has an actual gameplay purpose, because on its own, stopping to check out some babes while on the run from thousands of undead monsters is highly questionable, both in terms of tactics and just plain sanity.
Back during X10, Capcom revealed Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, the stand-alone prologue exclusive to Xbox Live Marketplace that will bridge the gap between the first and second game. It will introduce the sequel's protagonist, Chuck Greene, father and master of duct taping stuff, as he works to free himself and his daughter from the desert town of Still Creek -- two years after the events of the first game, but three years before the events of the sequel.

Shacknews managed to secure the details while at Captivate in Hawaii, and says Capcom promises Case Zero will have "unique content not available in the full retail release of Dead Rising 2." Sadly, there's no mention of price or release date for Case Zero, but rest assured: You still have plenty of time to stock up on Zombrex before Dead Rising 2 launches on August 31.
Chuck Greene may know his "way around a zombie or two," as he says in this new trailer from Dead Rising 2, but he'll be facing down thousands at a time in Fortune City. Greene's daughter Katey will also be along for the ride -- she's bitten by one of the walking dead early on, and will require a daily dose of a drug called "Zombrex" during the game's 72-hour span "to stop [her] from joining the ever-growing zombie horde." Greene also comes across two supporting ladies -- one is a short-haired army jacket-wearing girl who goes on about conspiracies and "false accusations," and the other is a bombastic reporter who brings new meaning to the word "teaser."

Capcom has also announced details of the game's online co-op system. Players will be able to use an "in-game transceiver to call for assistance at any time," and when your buddy shows up, it's game on for tactics like luring zombies into a kill zone or racing around on skateboards (no really -- check the gallery below). That's in addition to the "Terror is Reality" minigame versus mode that we got to play a little while ago, which will pit up to four players against each other in a game show setting.

Dead Rising 2 will be out for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in North America on August 31, and in Japan and Europe a few short, zombie-free days later.
He told CVG that Capcom "wanted to do it better for a Western audience this time," saying that Dead Rising "was built in a very Japanese style."

Too Japanese, in fact, according to Ohara. Now, with the help of Blue Castle, Capcom is creating something that is "much closer to feeling like a Western game," in a collaborative process that is resulting in "crazier" ideas than before. Like duct-taping weapons together, or a zombie game show. We're crossing our fingers in the vain hope that the Servbots weren't singled out as "too Japanese" to find their way into Dead Rising 2.
Clearing up some confusion over how exactly gamers will get a hold of the Dead Rising 2 prologue, Case Zero, announced at yesterday's X10 event, developer Blue Castle Games explained to Joystiq that the term "add-on" used by Microsoft was, well, dead wrong. "It's not an add-on, because it's set before [Dead Rising 2] and you won't need [either] retail game in order to play it," the devs told us. As for pricing, they could only say that, "it won't be free, but we'll make it accessible for a lot of players."

When we asked about a possible Dead Rising 2 demo -- whether it be single- or multiplayer -- they replied, "We think the prologue is going to give gamers a good sense of how the game is going to play. We haven't announced a release date for it yet, but it's definitely before the retail game." They added, "It's not like it's a chunk of the main game -- it is unique content, so even if you want to look at it as a 'demo,' it's not. It's a unique experience."
X10: Dead Rising 2 'Case Zero' prologue is standalone, will be game's 'demo' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Feb 2010 15:10:00 EST. As part of Microsoft's X10 press event, it's been announced that Blue Castle's primetime sequel, Dead Rising 2, will be available this summer. Arriving on US shores August 31, Japan and Europe will be spared the zombie apocalypse for a couple days, arriving there September 2nd and 3rd, respectively. That's crucial time to gather supplies like duct tape, pitch forks and shotguns, no doubt. Oh, and comically large cellphones, of course.
X10: Dead Rising 2 in US Aug. 31; shambles to Japan and Europe later that week originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Feb 2010 16:45:00 EST. Before we've even laid hands on its death-by-giant-cellphone sim, Dead Rising 2, developer Blue Castle Games is thinking about its next project. According to a job listing spotted by VG247, potential applicants will be required to have their finger on the pulse of "open world and FPS games like Prince of Persia, Assassins Creed, Halo, and everything in between."

Right, so look for Blue Castle's Dead Rising 2 follow-up, Royal Wall-Running Secret Killer Space Marine, coming in the fall of 2011.
Dead Rising 2 dev working on new action project originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Dec 2009 11:00:00 EST. Thankfully, if this new round of Dead Rising 2 videos is any indication, the sequel will expand on that arsenal. Capcom has released four short videos, each showcasing a different weapon. We don't want to jump the gun here, as it were, but we think the pitchfork / shotgun combination -- embedded above -- just might exceed the awesomeness quotient set forth by the Lancer. Check out all the videos after the break. As an added bonus, we've also embedded the not off-screen version of the Terror is Reality trailer.
Continue reading Videos: Dead Rising 2's buffet of death

Videos: Dead Rising 2's buffet of death originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 18:14:00 EST.
