The demo includes the single-player mode's 8 Ball race, which runs by San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, and the multiplayer Rampage mode. Rampage is an eight-player demolition derby where points are earned for crashes and take-outs.<br /><br />The <em>Dirt Showdown</em> demo also offers the first taste of RaceNet, a free online tracking and comparison extension for Codemasters racing games. Those who sign up for RaceNet get some special perks when the full game launches on May 25, including $20,000 of in-game currency. Yes, 20 big ones. Either that's an awesome bonus, or <em>Dirt Showdown</em> operates in a universe where everyone is a millionaire.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/01/dirt-showdown-multiplayer-demo-lition-available-today/">Dirt Showdown multiplayer demo(lition) available today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 May 2012 13:15:00 EST. Codemasters announced regional release dates for the Xbox 360/PS3/PC racer today, with that May 24 date kicking off the release in mainland Europe.<br /><br />A UK release will follow on May 25. The game will then drive across the Atlantic in time for a May 29 release in North America. A demo will be released worldwide May 1, featuring both single-player and multiplayer wreckin'. The release is the first from the new "Codemasters Racing" label, and will be the first game to use "RaceNet," an online hub for Codies racers. You'll be able to join up for the demo, and track your progress against friends.<br /><br />Along with the date announcement came some rare news: <em>Dirt Showdown</em> will be sold at GAME, which, along with Gamestation (and Walmart in North America), will offer an exclusive "Hoonigan" edition of the game with some in-game bonuses ... like Monster Energy liveries for some of the cars. Interactive Entertainment, who will now take care of distribution, sales and marketing for all of Codemasters' 2012 releases in North and South America, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-showdown"><em>Dirt Showdown</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/f1-2012"><em>F1 2012</em></a>.<br /><br />Fake eyewitness accounts report seeing THQ Publishing outside of Codemasters' bedroom window, holding a ghetto blaster above its head that was said to be playing "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel. We have, however, received conflicting reports that a freshly embittered THQ Publishing has opened a record shop and hired a young and enthusiastic Jack Black to work behind the counter.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/warner-bros-to-distribute-codemasters-games-in-2012/">Warner Bros. to distribute Codemasters games in 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Mar 2012 23:59:00 EST. Someone in Germany -- perhaps even some <em>people</em> -- illegally pirated a copy of <em>Prison Break: The Conspiracy</em>. Hard to believe as it may be, it appears to be the case according to TorrentFreak, who delved into German public records looking for game publishers who have employed German law to track down (and demand money from) people who allegedly pirated various games. In Germany, Koch Media publishes the Prison Break game, and has been demanding settlements of "several hundred Euros" from offending IP addresses.<br />
<br />
The records indicate that several major publishers, either directly or through subsidiaries/secondary parties, have been sending out letters to German citizens requesting varying levels of payment in return for <em>not being sued</em>. Where things get murky, however, is how the publishers are seeking out the accused pirates, using not always reliable "IP address-only evidence" -- easily circumvented with proxy domains and such. You know, <em>hacker stuff</em>.<br />
<br />
TorrentFreak's report indicates that a variety of publishers and distributors are involved, including (but not limited to): Atari, Koch Media (representing Techland's <em>Dead Island</em> and <em>Prison Break</em>, and Eidos/Square Enix's <em>Deus Ex: Human Revolution</em> as well as <em>Dungeon Siege 3</em> and various Final Fantasy titles), Daedalic Entertainment (representing LucasArts), Codemasters, BitComposer, Ubisoft, Kalypso Media, dtp entertainment, and Aerosoft. It is currently unclear how many settlement notices have been sent out by each company, or if any will continue doing so after these actions have been brought to light.<br />

If you lamented <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a>'s decorum and its increased focus on the rally discipline, Codemasters has a flashy alternative in <em>Dirt Showdown</em>, coming to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May 2012. <a href="http://uk.gamespot.com/dirt-showdown/previews/dirt-showdown-preview-less-dirt-more-destruction-6347189">Gamespot</a> has the first details on the spinoff, which eschews racing for a trio of arcade-style modes and a plethora of pyrotechnics.<br />
<br />
<em>Dirt Showdown</em> features "Hoonigan events," in which you perform driving stunts within compounds around the world (similar to <em>Dirt 3</em>'s gymkhana challenges). You'll also find a crunchy ode to collisions in the demolition derby events, alongside some more straightforward (minus those devilish hairpin turns) racing modes. You won't find point-to-point style dashes through lush foliage and arid landscapes here -- though Gamespot notes they'll "return with a renewed focus on simulation in Dirt 4."<br />
<br />
The preview claims that <em>Showdown</em> has an answer to Need for Speed's Autolog, allowing racers to challenge and monitor each other's performance online. A "mission-based" mode provides the foundation for much of these social challenges.<br />
<br />
It seems the game's style and tone, compared to <em>Dirt 3</em>, is perhaps best captured in the "King of the Ring" gametype, which sees all participating cars racing to a central point and then disintegrating into a shiny cloud of wrecked bits. And to think, we used to be so impressed when those triangles came flying off the cars in PlayStation's <em>Destruction Derby</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/12/dirt-showdown-ditches-rally-for-arcade-style-events/">Dirt Showdown ditches rally for arcade-style events</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 18:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/22/codemasters-teases-dizzy-revival-ask-your-european-friends/"><img border="1" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/11/dizzy1122.jpg" vspace="4" /></a></center>
A mysterious website, "eggcitingnews.com," popped up overnight, featuring an egg carton bearing the vintage Codemasters logo, and something inside with big cartoon eyes and a red mitten. "Guess who's back?" the caption reads. The domain is <a href="http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/eggcitingnews.com">owned by Codemasters</a>.<br />
<br />
This all appears to be leading up to the return of Codemasters' one-time franchise character, Dizzy. While Dizzy was most prominent in America as the star of a few unlicensed NES games published by Camerica, including two for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aladdin_Deck_Enhancer">Aladdin Deck Enhancer</a>, the walking egg was genuinely popular in Europe. His games are essentially adventure games, involving wandering around 2D landscapes, solving puzzles, and saving the "Yolkfolk."<br />
<br />
It's unclear from this teaser site exactly what Codies has planned. It could be as simple as a GOG-style re-release, or it could be an HD remake of a <em>Dizzy</em> game, or even a completely new game. Is your life like F1 racing itself? Are you moving too quickly, too dangerously to sit down on the couch and indulge in an F1 racing simulation? Good news then, as Codemasters has announced that <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/f1-2011">F1 2011</a> will be released in time for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/18/playstation-vita-to-launch-in-north-america-on-february-22/">launch of PlayStation Vita</a> on February 22, making it just the thing for the racing fan on the go.<br />
<br />
The game features plenty of single-player modes, full support for online and local multiplayer and, presumably, lots of pointy cars. Check out a new trailer above.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/17/f1-2011-crashing-into-vita-launch-lineup/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>F1 2011 crashing into Vita launch lineup</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/17/f1-2011-crashing-into-vita-launch-lineup/">F1 2011 crashing into Vita launch lineup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Nov 2011 02:30:00 EST. Codemasters is preparing to close down its Guildford studio, which was responsible for <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/bodycount">Bodycount</a></em>. The shuttering will affect the 66 employees, who were informed today about the 30-day consultation shut-down period (based on the studio's size), required by UK law.<br />
<br />
"As we look to take greater leadership in the racing category, Codemasters is proposing a studio structure that adds resource and strengthens our best-in-class racing teams," a company spokesperson said in a statement. Those being laid off are being "encouraged" to apply for positions at Codemasters' Warwickshire HQ (<em>Dirt, Grid, F1 Online</em>) and the Birmingham studio, which is working on a new racing IP.<br />
<br />
Bodycount's "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/02/bodycount-review/">poor design choices and lack of any compelling moments</a>" didn't sit well with us, nor with critics in general, and earned it a Metacritic score in the low-50s. The game premiered in 36th place on the UK charts <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/05/deus-ex-maintains-uk-top-spot-driver-races-into-second/">two weeks ago</a>, then disappeared. It's a IP that's not likely to be heard from again.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/14/codemasters-shutting-down-bodycount-developer/">Codemasters shutting down Bodycount developer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 09:30:00 EST. In some ways, I admire <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/bodycount"><em>Bodycount</em></a> -- it's a game that says, "OK, shoot guys. That's really all we want you to do. Shoot them with your gun, move on, and then shoot <em>more</em> dudes, because shooting dudes is fun." And you know what? It's right. In <em>Bodycount</em>, mowing people down is satisfying, thanks to your obscene amount of power and the sheer volume of dudes being tossed your way.<br />
<br />
However, nowadays, when other entries in the shooting-dudes genre offer us so much more than that, <em>Bodycount</em> wears pretty thin, pretty quickly.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-e3-2011/">Bodycount (E3 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-e3-2011/#4216380"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/bodycount14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-e3-2011/#4216381"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/bodycount1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-e3-2011/#4216382"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/bodycount2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-e3-2011/#4216383"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/bodycount3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-e3-2011/#4216384"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/bodycount4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/02/bodycount-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Bodycount review: Mindless manslaughter</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/02/bodycount-review/">Bodycount review: Mindless manslaughter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 16:30:00 EST. Codemasters has announced a new demo for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/bodycount"><em>Bodycount</em></a>. The Xbox Live demo of the unabashed shooter is <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Bodycount-Demo/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802434d883a">available now</a> and clocks in at a hefty 1.45GB, so you'll have to count the minutes before you even get to the bodies. A PS3 demo "will follow" at some point in the future.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/16/bodycount-demo-shoots-xbox-live-ps3-version-forthcoming/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Bodycount demo shoots Xbox Live, PS3 version forthcoming</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/16/bodycount-demo-shoots-xbox-live-ps3-version-forthcoming/">Bodycount demo shoots Xbox Live, PS3 version forthcoming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 22:20:00 EST. As if fantasy football wasn't enough of a workplace distraction, Codemasters has recently announced <a href="http://www.f1onlinethegame.com/"><em>F1 Online: The Game</em></a>, which is, as you may have guessed, a free-to-play, browser-based Formula 1 racing game/management simulator.<br />
<br />
Set to launch sometime in Q1 2012, <em>F1 Online</em> allows players to race as their favorite real-world teams, or as a fictional team of their own creation. Full-scale World Championships and Grand Prix events will be available, qualifying runs and all, and social networking integration means you'll be able to immediately notify your friends upon beating Cyber-Alonso's lap record by 0.000001 of a second.<br />
<br />
For the more managerially-minded among us, team-management functionality will let the player "manage the commercial, research, production and race crew functions required for success on track," meaning that those reports you needed to finish <em>totally won't get finished</em>. McLaren-Mercedes, Williams, Lotus-Renault, and Force India are all present and accounted for, and with the inclusion of world-famous circuits like Monaco and Silverstone, <em>F1 Online: The Game</em> looks to be the racing enthusiast's ideal time-waster.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/14/codemasters-announces-f1-online-the-game/">Codemasters announces F1 Online: The Game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 14 Aug 2011 12:00:00 EST. The thing about a title like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bodycount"><em>Bodycount</em></a> is that it really takes the focus off the what, who and where of the killing and puts it on ... well, the killing. This developer diary rectifies that, showing off the variety of both your opponents and the battlegrounds where you'll square off.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/08/bodycount-dev-diary-shows-off-some-variety/">Bodycount dev diary shows off some variety</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 21:30:00 EST. In this first developer diary for Codemasters' straight-laced shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bodycount"><em>Bodycount</em></a>, a few of the game's creators get together to talk about a subject near and dear to their hearts: Wildlife preservation. Oh, wait, did we say wildlife preservation? We meant guns. <em>All of the guns</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/02/bodycount-developer-diary-is-just-crazy-about-its-guns/">Bodycount developer diary is just crazy about its guns</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Aug 2011 00:00:00 EST. Codemasters probably had no idea the accidental synergy it was creating, dropping the Monte Carlo DLC for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a> the same week that the soon-to-be hit <a href="http://www.facebook.com/officialmontecarlomovie">romantic comedy of the same name</a> was arriving in theaters, but here we are. Unfortunately, Selena Gomez isn't a new rallycross driver in the upcoming pack, and as far as we know, there isn't any rallycross in the film. What a waste!<br />
<br />
Regardless, the $10 pack is now available on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 via their respective digital storefronts, and on PC via the Games for Windows Marketplace. It comprises eight new tracks set in the miniscule Mediterranean monarchy of Monaco (specifically Monte Carlo, of course). If, like us, you don't have a summer villa in the DLC's lavish setting, you may want to take a peek at the maps in action before purchasing the pack -- for that, we suggest heading into our gallery below.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/">DiRT 3 (Monte Carlo Track Pack DLC)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/#4258784"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dirt3montedlc1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/#4258785"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dirt3montedlc2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/#4258786"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dirt3montedlc3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/#4258787"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dirt3montedlc4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/#4258788"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dirt3montedlc5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/29/dirt-3-monte-carlo-dlc-now-available-worldwide/">Dirt 3 Monte Carlo DLC now available worldwide</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Jun 2011 12:30:00 EST. Late last week, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/bodycount-bringing-an-arsenal-to-consoles-this-august/">we learned</a> that scintillatingly explodey <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bodycount"><em>Bodycount</em></a> would launch its campaign against restraint and ammo conservation this August. That date's just gotten a bit more specific: the month is still accurate, but just barely so, with <em>Bodycount</em> scooting in under the tripwire on August 30.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/29/count-the-days-until-bodycounts-august-30-release/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Count the days until Bodycount's August 30 release</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/29/count-the-days-until-bodycounts-august-30-release/">Count the days until Bodycount's August 30 release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Jun 2011 11:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bodycount"><em>Bodycount</em></a> may have missed its intended "early 2011" release window, but it seems that Codemasters wasn't far off. Today the publisher announced an August launch for the title and gave us a new peek into the game's 'splosion-packed action. As you'll see in the clip after the break, <em>Bodycount</em> is clearly about employing a variety of weapons as often as possible, all the while chasing an elusive enemy known as "The Target." (S<em>eriously.</em>)<br />
<br />
Apparently you'll be extending the pile of bodies across Africa, Asia and "mysterious bases" (okay, <em>stop it</em>) in said search, but the folks at Codies won't speak up until an upcoming community Q&amp;A. You can participate in that over at the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/06/24/e3-2011-bodycount-is-back/">US PlayStation Blog</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/bodycount-bringing-an-arsenal-to-consoles-this-august/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Bodycount bringing an arsenal to consoles this August</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/bodycount-bringing-an-arsenal-to-consoles-this-august/">Bodycount bringing an arsenal to consoles this August</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Jun 2011 19:20:00 EST. Fans of Codemasters' 2008 racing title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/grid"><em>GRID</em></a> received some bad news this weekend: The multiplayer servers for the PC and PS3 versions of the game <a href="http://community.codemasters.com/forum/grid-multiplayer-1035/467878-grid-online-multiplayer-discontinued-ps3-pc.html">have been taken offline</a>. A post on the publisher's forums explains, "This follows the decision by a third party provider to decline the offer of an extended contract to continue online play on these platforms." The provider apparently decided the 360 SKU's servers were worth saving -- Xbox Live players still have access to the game's full range on online features.<br />
<br />
We wish Codemasters would really think these kinds of actions through before executing them. You guys know what the repercussions for this outage will be, right? Jilted PS3 and PC players are going to get into real-life illegal street racing. Do you really want to be responsible for people falling into that lifestyle, Codemasters? <em>Do you</em>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/19/codemasters-takes-down-grid-ps3-and-pc-servers/">Codemasters takes down GRID PS3 and PC servers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 19 Jun 2011 16:30:00 EST. I'm going to take the mic here for a moment, readers, and tell you something personally: It has been fascinating to watch the development of Codemasters' FPS <em>Bodycount</em>. I originally posted <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/15/codemasters-working-on-new-fps-from-creator-of-black/">the game's unofficial announcement</a> early last year, saw a preview and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/18/bodycounts-stuart-black-and-his-inspirations/">talked to creator Stuart Black</a> at last year's E3, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/bodycount-preview/">saw the game in action</a> after Black left the project and, finally, got to see and play it last week at this year's E3 conference.<br />
<br />
Long story short, I've basically had a front row seat on the development of this one, and it's been very interesting to watch it develop over the past 16 months. Black's original vision was not much more than just a demo level, a slick future shooter with a snappy female voice feeding orders in your ear. And from preview to preview, that vision has been prodded and poked by other developers, growing up into the game <em>Bodycount</em> has become.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, much of what appealed in the initial vision has gotten a little muddied along the way. Some elements of that early demo are still in there (and there's a whole lot more besides), but <em>Bodycount</em>'s gone from a lot of unique potential to a much more mundane reality.<br />

Last Friday, some malevolent entity got into codemasters.com, and obtained access to information on the <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a> code redemption page, the E Store, and the CodeM database. The publisher sent out an email today warning users about the site's code having been mastered.<br />
<br />
The hacker was able to access information including customer names, addresses, and email addresses (but not payment information), and passwords, along with Xbox Live Gamertags and IP addresses. Codemasters shut its site down immediately upon detecting the intrusion. A new website will launch later this year, with Codemasters planning to redirect to its Facebook page in the meantime.<br />
<br />
"Whilst we do not have confirmation that any of this data was downloaded onto an external device," Codies said in the email to users, "we have to assume that, as access was gained, all of these details were compromised and/or stolen." You can read the full email after the break ... right after you change your password anywhere that you had been using the same one you used on the Codies site.<br />
<br />

Codemasters has announced the first DLC for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a>, and says that all proceeds from the sale will go to charity. The Colin McRae Vision Charity Pack is now available for the Xbox Live and Games for Windows versions of the game (for 160 Microsoft points / $2), and allows players to drive a Ford Escort Mk II with five different liveries. The PS3 version will be available as soon as the PlayStation Store returns.<br />
<br />
This was the car famously driven by Colin McRae, the original namesake of the<em> Dirt</em> series who died in 2007. All proceeds from the pack will go to <a href="http://www.colinmcrae.com/vision.asp">the Colin McRae Vision Charity</a>, which raises funds for worthwhile causes around the world in McRae's name.<br />
<br />
Codemasters says that this is the first of a few weeks' worth of DLC packs. Each will feature more cars and new tracks going forward.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/02/dirt-3s-colin-mcrae-charity-dlc-released-proceeds-go-to-good-c/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dirt 3's Colin McRae charity DLC released, proceeds go to good cause</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/02/dirt-3s-colin-mcrae-charity-dlc-released-proceeds-go-to-good-c/">Dirt 3's Colin McRae charity DLC released, proceeds go to good cause</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Jun 2011 03:00:00 EST. Codemasters hopes to fill your daily requirement for explosions with these half-dozen new shots from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bodycount"><em>Bodycount</em></a>. Development on the new FPS, designed by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/black"><em>Black</em></a> creator Stuart Black, continues apace despite <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/19/stuart-black-to-leave-codemasters-this-october-bodycount-still/">his departure from the project</a> and Codies is confident enough in the work so far that a demo is incoming.<br />
<br />
Game director Andy Wilson <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/bodycount_demo_planned.html">tells VideoGamer.com</a> that, "When people play it, they seem to really get on with it, so we want to put it in as many hands as possible." No word yet on a release date for the demo -- the full game is due "this summer" -- but at least we can <em>count</em> on there being one.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/">Bodycount (6/1/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181653"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/pb003tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181654"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/pb005tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181655"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/pb007tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181656"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/ti002tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181657"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/ti003tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/bodycount-squeezes-off-six-shots-demo-on-the-way/">Bodycount squeezes off six shots, demo on the way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 18:00:00 EST. WB and Netherrealm earned some goodwill from PS3 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mortal-kombat-2011"><em>Mortal Kombat</em></a> owners recently, by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/20/mortal-kombat-waives-kombat-pass-until-playstation-store-retur/">disabling the "Kombat Pass"</a> and allowing players to fight online without redeeming the one-time-use code in the PlayStation Store (which is down). Unfortunately, such a concession won't be possible for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a>.<br />
<br />
"We've looked into doing something similar for <em>Dirt 3</em> but it's not technically possible," a Codemasters rep told <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-05-25-codies-cant-disable-dirt-3-online-pass">Eurogamer</a>. "It's hard-coded into the game." Removing the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/dirt-3-to-feature-10-online-pass-for-used-purchases/">VIP pass</a> requirement would involve a patch, the publisher explained, which would likely take longer to push through than it will take for the Store to come back online.<br />
<br />
An alternate solution to this problem (though not for <em>Dirt 3</em>, since it's already out) would be to cut out Online Pass schemes in general. We wonder if anyone has suggested that.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/dirt-3s-vip-pass-cant-be-disabled-for-ps3-owners/">Dirt 3's 'VIP Pass' can't be disabled for PS3 owners</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 May 2011 12:30:00 EST. This <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a> launch trailer doesn't bother getting into the nitty-gritty of what makes this sequel <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/dirt-3-review/">so excellent</a>. THQ <a href="http://investor.thq.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=96376&amp;p=irol-newsArticle_Print&amp;ID=1567382&amp;highlight=">announced</a> today that, through its THQ Partners unit, it would be handling the North American distribution of four of Codemasters 2011 releases. In fact, THQ Partners actually began its task today, with the release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a> into the retail channel.<br />
<br />
The deal also encompasses distribution of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/operation-flashpoint-red-river"><em>Operation Flashpoint: Red River</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bodycount"><em>Bodycount</em></a> and <em>F1 2011</em>. The new <em>Operation Flashpoint</em> hits June 7, with <em>Bodycount</em> set for "later this summer." Financial details of the deal weren't disclosed, but it has been confirmed that Codies will continue to handle the marketing of all four titles in-house.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/thq-takes-on-distribution-of-four-codemasters-releases-this-year/">THQ takes on distribution of four Codemasters releases this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 May 2011 02:00:00 EST. According to the <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>DiRT 3</em></a> Trophies discovered by <a href="http://www.ps3trophies.org/game/dirt-3/trophies/">PS3Trophies.org</a>, the upcoming rally racer has several downloadable content packs planned. All in all, Trophies have revealed four different DLC packs, including the "Mud and Guts" and "Power and Glory" car packs as well as the Monte Carlo and X Games Asia track packs, each with four additional trophies. Release date and pricing for the packs has yet to be revealed.<br />
<br />
PS3 Trophies tend to mirror Xbox Achievements for the same titles, making the DLC a likely bet for the Xbox 360 version as well.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/trophies-reveal-mounds-of-dirt-3-dlc/">Trophies reveal mounds of Dirt 3 DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 May 2011 22:35:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt</em> 3</a> really, really wants you to love rally racing as much as it does. It wants you to love the speed, the grit, and the cheers of the crowd just barely audible over the roar of your engine. It also wants you to love how difficult the sport is, how tough it is to keep your off-road vehicle on the road in muddy terrain. It's a good thing that it does, because it doesn't find any qualms with dropping you right in the middle of its world of drifts, revs, and ... zombies?<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3/">Dirt 3</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3/#3255073"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/dirt31_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3/#3255074"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/dirt32_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3/#3255075"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/dirt303_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3/#3255076"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/dirt35_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3/#3255077"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/dirt39_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/dirt-3-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dirt 3 review: Pep rally</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/dirt-3-review/">Dirt 3 review: Pep rally</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 May 2011 16:59:00 EST. Codemasters has added its name to the list of publishers who are attempting to keep their games out of the pre-owned bin by equipping them with one-time-use tickets to the internet. According to <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-05-20-dirt-3-gets-online-pass">Eurogamer</a>, new copies of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a> -- which arrives on store shelves tomorrow -- include a "VIP Pass," which unlocks five exclusive automobiles and enables the game's online multiplayer modes. Folks who purchase a used copy of the game with a code that's already been redeemed will have to buy the code on Xbox Live or PSN for 800 Microsoft Points ($10).<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/online-pass">Online Pass</a> scheme usually evokes some mixed reactions from the gaming community, but we always get stuck imagining even worse scenarios. Imagine this: What if all of the game's cars only had three wheels? Oh, what -- you want that fourth wheel? No problem, just put in that VIP Pass. Oh, you don't have one? Well, we hope you don't like winning races, Sparky.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/dirt-3-to-feature-10-online-pass-for-used-purchases/">Dirt 3 to feature $10 Online Pass for used purchases</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 May 2011 15:25:00 EST. Fans of previous installments in the <em>Operation Flashpoint</em> franchise are likely familiar with the radial command menu used to control teammates. In the latest dev diary for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/operation-flashpoint-red-river"><em>Operation Flashpoint:</em> <em>Red River</em></a>, the creators give a look at how this once cumbersome system's been tightened up.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/12/operation-flashpoint-red-river-developer-diary-makes-radical-ra/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Operation Flashpoint: Red River developer diary makes radical radial changes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/12/operation-flashpoint-red-river-developer-diary-makes-radical-ra/">Operation Flashpoint: Red River developer diary makes radical radial changes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 May 2011 00:30:00 EST. We've all done it: There's an empty parking lot, not another driver in sight -- why not tear it up? But what if there <em>was</em> another driver and a third party who, presumably, was responsible for setting up a series of intricate ramps and jumps? Well then, you'd have yourself a Gymkhana battle.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/dirt-3-trailer-throws-down-in-a-gymkhana-battle/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dirt 3 trailer throws down in a Gymkhana battle</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/dirt-3-trailer-throws-down-in-a-gymkhana-battle/">Dirt 3 trailer throws down in a Gymkhana battle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 May 2011 23:30:00 EST. We admit it -- before watching this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a> trailer, we thought that a "superteam" was something super heroes joined to unionize the crime-fighting process. Now we know that it's a thing that rally car drivers join, so that they can drive real fast together.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/dirt-3-trailer-joins-the-superteam-probably-fights-some-crime/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dirt 3 trailer joins the superteam, probably fights some crime</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/dirt-3-trailer-joins-the-superteam-probably-fights-some-crime/">Dirt 3 trailer joins the superteam, probably fights some crime</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 May 2011 05:00:00 EST. Starting June 1, Turbine will relieve Codemasters Online of all duties pertaining to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-lord-of-the-rings-online">Lord of the Rings Online</a> </em>in Europe. At that time, Turbine will merge its US and EU branches into one "mega-service" called LOTRO Global Service. Turbine expects there to be a bit of downtime for the game during this transition and will offer exact details on that at a later date. Additionally, EU players will need to migrate their account on over to the new service -- exact details on how to do so are forthcoming.<br />

Turbine has published <a href="http://www.lotro.com/news/latestnews/1157">a pretty extensive FAQ</a> on how this will all go down, so if you're currently using the Codemasters Online service in Europe, you'll definitely want to head on over and give it a read. If you're intrigued by Codemasters' upcoming rally racer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a>, but find yourself turned off by all the ... um, <em>rally racing</em>, the developer recently revealed a multiplayer-oriented "<a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/04/08/friends-of-the-earth-dirt-3s-party-mode/">Party Mode</a>" which might just float your boat. The mode will feature three distinctly non-racing mini-games, including:
<ul>
	<li>
		"Invasion," in which players drive around an open lot, crashing into cardboard robots while avoiding cardboard skyscrapers. We anticipate this will be harder than it sounds, as some skyscrapers seem to resemble giant robots nowadays.</li>
	<li>
		"Outbreak," which sees one player "infected" with some sort of automotive ailment, symbolized by their car turning bright green. The player can spread the disease to others by colliding with them, and the last healthy player wins the pot.</li>
	<li>
		"Transporter," a capture-the-flag title where players must grab randomly-spawning flags and return them to their home base, avoiding their fellow, flag-snatching drivers. Jason Statham appears to be regrettably absent.</li>
</ul><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/09/dirt-3s-party-mode-revealed-features-three-multiplayer-mini-ga/">Dirt 3's Party Mode revealed, features three multiplayer mini-games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 09 Apr 2011 12:30:00 EST. Try <em>Dirt 3</em> ... <em>hundred</em>. GameStop is listing an extravagant bundle for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Codemasters' rally racer that includes the game and a remote-controlled, 1/16 scale replica of the Ken Block Gymkhana Fiesta. The site offers the same <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/04/dirt-3-kicks-up-dust-on-may-24/">May 24 release date</a> as the normal, virtual-car-only version.<br />

At $299.99, you'd be unlikely to indulge the temptation to drive this RC car anywhere near <em>actual</em> dirt, but you could have some totally sweet races in your house between this and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/call-of-duty-black-ops-prestige-edition-comes-with-working-rc-s/"><em>Black Ops</em> car</a>. And we imagine you have plenty of floor space in your huge house for those races, if you can afford both of these bundles.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/07/gamestop-lists-300-dirt-3-rc-car-bundle/">GameStop lists $300 Dirt 3/RC Car bundle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 21:30:00 EST. Rally racing is already an inconceivably dangerous sport -- but the now-forbidden "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_B">Group B</a>" league once took things to new levels of speed and fatality. It might be illegal in the meatspace, but in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3">Dirt 3</a> </em>the spirit of Group B is alive and kicking, as seen in this trailer.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/dirt-3-trailer-previews-the-wicked-dangerous-group-b-rally/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dirt 3 trailer previews the wicked dangerous Group B Rally</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/dirt-3-trailer-previews-the-wicked-dangerous-group-b-rally/">Dirt 3 trailer previews the wicked dangerous Group B Rally</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 22:30:00 EST.
