Crysis hits rock bottom price in Steam sale

The EA Steam Week continues with deals on Crysis games. Right now, you can get Crysis for $7.49 through the digital storefront, or Crysis Warhead for $4.99; however, true, hardcore saving-money-on-Crysis fans will be more interested in the Crysis Maximum Edition, which combines the two for just $10. Those prices will help you maintain enough savings for the rest of the stuff you'll be impulse-buying on Steam this week.

These deals are active in North America, but a quick warning -- they may be different in your region. And they'll definitely be different Saturday at 1PM EST, when the deal expires.

EA 'Summer Weekend Sale' offers a season's worth of discounts

Most people think summer is the time to go swimming and enjoy the bounty Mother Nature has to offer. Sure, you could do that, or you could spend your summer months as we do: sitting around in the A/C, eating cold pizza and playing some games. Thus, we present the EA Summer Weekend Sale, which slashes prices on select EA games (PC only, folks!) every weekend. Until July 18, EA is offering 50% off both Crysis and Crysis Warhead.

Gamerdeals got its hands on a list of what's supposedly going to be offered throughout the promotion -- highlights include Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins and Need for Speed: Shift. We've contacted EA to confirm the list and will let you know what we hear back.

If you actually possess the fungible assets required to purchase a government-grade supercomputer -- you know, the kind with an actual human brain built right into it -- then we imagine you don't concern yourself too much with time-sensitive discounts. Still, we thought we'd bring this to your attention: If you own an impossibly powerful computing device, you can buy Crysis or Crysis Warhead on Steam this weekend for just $15 a piece. Well, you can buy them regardless of your computer's hardware specs -- but if you hope you play them, you better think about investing in some cerebral processing power.

Crytek exec Avni Yerli joins GDC Europe advisory board

Like momma always said, if you're gonna effect change, the best place to be is on the inside. Avni Yerli, managing director and co-founder of Crytek, has joined the GDC Europe advisory board, where together with existing members he hopes to "create a conference that will hit the industry's nerve."

GDC Europe's Frank Sliwka put it another way, offering hope that Yerli's membership will "elevate the conference to a whole new level." Let's just hope the board's processors can handle the stress without -- dare we say it -- crying.

Crysis Wars free trial begins, Crysis Maximum Edition coming soon

You know, Frankfurt has given us so much. There's Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral, Hauptwache, to say nothing of the annual Festival of Stoneware. Now, the German city's own Crytek is giving you yet another gift: A free trial of the multiplayer-only Crysis Wars, beginning today and wrapping up April 17. You can find all the details here.

Also announced this morning: Crysis: Maximum Edition, which includes Crysis, Crysis: Warhead and Crysis Wars, bundled together for latecomers to the series for $39.99 beginning on May 5. ... What, you thought Frankfurt would give you that for free too? You've already got Wäldchestag, how much more do you need?

EA's perpetual joke -- on you -- comes to an ironic end on April Fools' Day with the release of de-authorization tools for each of its 19 PC games with SecuROM copy protection (full list and download links after the break). If you've been working on that class action lawsuit against EA for bundling SecuROM with The Sims 2: IKEA Home Stuff, you can drop it now -- your flat-pack furniture can finally be moved to a new machine.

In the spirit of generosity, EA's giving you two options for managing your authorizations:

Option 1: Download and install yet another "tool" in order to scan your computer for EA's SecuROM games and find out how many computer authorizations you have (or don't have) left for each title.
Option 2: Cut to the chase and download the game-specific de-authorization tool you need.

Crysis Warhead, Crysis available on Steam

Crysis and Crysis Warhead are now both available on Valve's Steam digital distribution service for $40 and $30, respectively. Warhead will be available tomorrow outside North America.

Of course, Crysis is now the stuff of PC legend for being "that game," which will take your two-year-old PC and teach it the meaning of pain. Crysis Warhead is its "less demanding" little brother who just wants to play. Remember, you can always try the Crysis Demo to see how your PC will cope.

Crysis Warhead on the cheap: EA's 'Warhead PC' priced at $699

Hoping to disprove the notion that everything with the word "Crysis" on it requires the latest, greatest supercomputer - and several ounces of irradiated uranium - to run with a framerate in the double digits, EA has teamed up with UltraPC to sell what it's (unofficially?) calling the "Warhead PC" - a single SKU offering that brings some of console gaming's simplicity to the PC gaming world.

In short, the team at Crytek wanted Crysis Warhead to run on far more systems than Crysis did, so they built their own lower-end "Warhead PC" which they used to test the game on throughout its development. Dropping frames on the Warhead PC? Tweak it until it runs smooth as butter. With a "hard cap" to aim for, the developers were able to guarantee a minimum level of performance using the following specs: an Intel Core Duo e7300 running 2.66GHz, an Nvidia 9800GT video card, and 2 gigglebytes of RAM.

The Warhead PC will be available to preorder on September 16 - the game's launch day - for $699, a far cry from the hundreds of bajillions we had saved up for a Crysis rig of our own. We'll spend the rest of that money on tricking out the rather bland box - seen above - with enough blue LEDs to burn our retinas. Ahh, PC gaming ...

Crysis Warhead detonates Sept. 16 in NA, Sept. 12 in Europe

Those of you whose computers e-cowered in fear at the system requirements for Crysis will get another chance to enter the game's world when Crysis Warhead lands in Europe on Sept. 12 and Sept. 16 in North America. More than just a side story to Crytek's excellent game, Warhead purports to actually be a touch less system-intensive than its burly predecessor.

Special side note for those of you who love bargains as much as throwing bad guys into oceans with your cyber-muscles: You can pre-order the game right now in the EA Store for $24.99, a five-dollar savings for you, the consumer.

Are you still consoling your PC every night, saying its inability to play Crysis is okay? All the while, you know you're lying to both yourself and your poor rig, just wishing you could sneak out and buy a better machine and feel the sweet embrace of Crytek's excellent game. Well, there's no need to tell the PC you're "just going for a jog" anymore.

The supposedly less hardware-intensive Crysis Warhead is ready to show you what it's made of and will supposedly run quite well on a €600 rig. It may not be as stunning as Crysis, but it won't require a second job to keep happy either. Check out the first screens below and a new trailer after the break.

Crysis Warhead won't make your PC cry

It's always a little ... awkward explaining to guests that the "modern art" in our living rooms are actually PCs melted by playing Crysis on its highest settings. Thankfully, Crytek has heard our whimpering and is working to make Cysis: Warhead play more nicely with mid-range gaming rigs.

Voodoo Extreme was kind enough to translate an article on German gaming site PCGamers.de which states that the PC-exclusive Crysis folllow-up is being designed to run at a locked 30fps on a roughly $600 system. Now, compare that to the original game, which was sluggish even on a PC costing three times that much and ... you have happier PC gamers. If Crytek's programmers can actually pull off such a formidable feat, we sense a stalling in the PC upgrade market come the game's release.

Crytek: No more PC exclusives ... after this one last PC exclusive

We'll be honest: when we read about the recently announced PC-exclusive Crysis Warhead, we were a bit confused. Didn't Crytek pres Cevat Yerli just say, "I believe we won't have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future"? If that was his belief a whopping thirty-six days before announcing a major, AAA PC-exclusive like Warhead, we'd second guess arguing politics with the man, if we were you.

But lo, what's this? Here comes Crytek's Harald Seeley to explain that Yerli "was referring to any new projects [Crytek] will start in the future" and that "all new franchises [they] develop in the future will be created with a cross platform strategy in mind." Speaking of that cross platform strategy, Crytek's engine wizards have been busy squeezing the ship-sized CryENGINE 2 into a console-sized bottle and their efforts thus far have made the engine "even more scaleable" - an accomplishment that should be on display in Warhead. We'll see how they did when we try to run Crysis Warhead on our trusty 486 this fall. Scale that!

Crysis Warhead dropping exclusively on PC this Fall

EA and Crytek have officially announced the development of Crysis Warhead, "a parallel story" to hardware-taxing tropical shooter, Crysis. Built by Crytek's Budapest studio atop an optimized version of the CryEngine 2 technology, Crysis Warhead sees players squeezing into the nanosuit of Sergeant Sykes, affectionately dubbed "Psycho," and learning that "life on the other side of the island is even more intense and explosive than they ever could have imagined." Given all the eyeball-melting events in Crysis, we reckon they're capable of imagining quite a bit.

Crytek president and CEO, Cevat Yerli, found the original game's reception by gamers and the media to be quite pleasing, but noted to the studio's intention to raise the ol' bar. "With Warhead, we are focusing on refining our storytelling and game performance, while also delivering more of the visually stunning graphics and immersive, free-roaming gameplay everyone loved in Crysis," he said. Expect more weapons, more vehicles and more multiplayer content when Crysis Warhead nukes lesser computers this Fall.

Crytek teases 'Crysis Warhead'

Crysis developer Crytek just placed the mysterious image you see above on the splash page for its site. Could "Crysis Warhead" be the "good reason" for not continuing work on the original Crysis the developer recently hinted at? They did say we'd know more "very, very soon."

Sequel? Title of the console port? Actual military weapon utilizing a PC powerful enough to run Crysis at max settings? We just love mysteries.
