Understandable, considering most titles wouldn't look too hot all stretched out for today's modern <em>high resmolution</em> screens. But then, the usual presentation -- tiny DS screens embedded within a larger screen -- is a bit bland. SouthPeak has come up with an interesting solution for the marketing behind Renegade Kid's upcoming horror FPS <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dementium-2"><em>Dementium 2</em></a>. The solution is simple: Rather than overlaying the screens on a DS mockup image, simply <em>embed the screens in human flesh</em>.<br />
<br />
Granted, it probably wouldn't work for, say, the <em>Imagine</em> series, but it's damned effective here. Give it a watch.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/23/new-dementium-2-trailer-packs-small-screen-with-big-creeps/">New Dementium 2 trailer packs small screen with big creeps</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Mar 2010 18:15:00 EST. Rather than the February 2 date listed on that schedule, The company announced that the DS horror FPS will ship in North America on February 16 of next year. Europe will be subject to <em>the horror</em> two weeks later on March 5.<br />
<br />
SouthPeak reports that some <em>Dementium II</em> posters are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/07/pre-order-bonus-put-a-touch-of-dementium-ii-on-your-wall/">still available</a> to those who pre-order and send pictures of their receipts. Presumably more people will take advantage of the offer now that they now <em>when</em> the game they're pre-ordering will be released.<br />

Would you like <em>this</em> on your wall? The first 1,000 people in the US and Canada to pre-order <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dementium-ii"><em>Dementium II</em></a> at an "authorized retailer" (including Amazon and GameStop) <em>and</em> send their mailing addresses and scans of their receipts to: "dementiumii [at] southpeakgames [dot] com," will receive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dementium-2-11-20-09/2513423/full/">this poster</a>, signed by Renegade Kid's Jools Watsham and Gregg Hargrove. Surely, there's room on your wall between the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/29/muramasa-the-gamestop-preorder-bonus/"><em>Muramasa</em> scroll</a> and the shelf you nailed up to rest your <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/30/amazons-new-super-mario-bros-wii-bundle-adds-lunchable-compati/"><em>Mario</em> lunchpail</a> upon on its days off.<br />
<br />
The <em>Dementium II </em>poster was previously given away in a Halloween promotion, but was apparently popular enough among hand-from-face fans to warrant a return engagement. Speaking of <em>Dementium II</em> and creepy imagery, SouthPeak opened a teaser site for the horror sequel. You can visit it <a href="http://www.dementium.com/">here</a> ... <em>if you dare!</em> Which you probably do.<br />

I knew that the first game enjoyed critical acclaim for more than adequately bringing survival/horror tropes to Nintendo's handheld, and ultimately <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/01/metareview-dementium-the-ward-ds/">scored pretty well</a> with reviewers, but ever since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroid-prime-hunters"><em>Metroid Prime Hunters</em></a> I've been wary of first-person mechanics on the DS.<br />
<br />
Thankfully, when first faced with manipulating <em>Dementium 2</em>'s main character, it became quickly obvious that the game's slow pace helps to account for any discomfort issues that might arise from the control scheme. Over the course of 45 minutes, I put together puzzles, traveled between two dimensions multiple times, and even fought a boss who tried to throw up on me from the ceiling (what a jerk!). Though its content and storytelling seems to be a carefully crafted amalgam of games from the three or so genres it mashes up (fps, adventure, survival/horror) - a handheld <em>Half-Life</em> meets <em>Silent Hill</em> on <em>Monkey Island</em>, almost - the time I spent with a preview build of <em>Dementium 2</em> earlier today felt like the beginning of what could be a very interesting game. <br />

Though <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/southpeak">SouthPeak</a> is keen to point out that its net revenues rose from last year by $7.2 million, the company's profits for the year remain firmly in the red, with a $12.1 million posted loss for the 2009 fiscal year ending June 30. SouthPeak's <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20091014005700&amp;newsLang=en">loss report</a> comes confusingly paired with a 100% increase in units sold from fiscal year 2008 (from 1.2 to 2.4 million units) -- 2009's posted $12.1 net loss gets explained away by "approximately $12.5 million invested in game development and intellectual property for future title releases," among other things.<br />
<br />
The report also allows "$1.6 million of expenses relating to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/14/southpeak-buys-gamecock/">Gamecock acquisition</a>," hopefully some of which went to paying Gamecock debt <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/gamecock-acquisition-goes-south-vendors-accuse-southpeak-of-no/">now owed by SouthPeak</a> -- this on top of another $4.6 million or so for "charges relating to write-downs on software values and sequel right values to certain titles." Unsurprisingly, the publisher hopes that upcoming titles <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/two-worlds-2"><em>Two Worlds 2</em></a> and <em>My Baby: First Steps</em>, as well as a "highly-anticipated sequel to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dementium"><em>Dementium</em></a>," will bolster its next fiscal year. We're just hoping the games the company <em>does</em> sell will actually garner some profit this time around.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/15/southpeak-doubles-game-sales-in-2009-amid-dropping-profits/">SouthPeak doubles game sales in 2009 amid dropping profits</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Oct 2009 00:30:00 EST. We've already had a gander at the game's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/give-dementium-iis-box-art-a-hand/">super freaky box art</a>, but this is the first glimpse we've had of the actual game. The screens look very promising for a DS game, especially the lighting. Granted, it's hard to be as freaked out by such tiny screen shots, but we're missing the sound effects and music that properly set off the atmosphere. Based solely on the images, we're eager to see some more. Preferably in motion.<br /> <br /> Check out the first screens in the gallery below.<br /> <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/demented-new-dementium-2-screens/">Demented new Dementium 2 screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Aug 2009 15:48:00 EST. Speaking on his personal <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuNumr9NjM8">YouTube video blog</a>, Renegade Kid's Jools Watsham has given some clarification to the early 2010 release date of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dementium-ii"><em>Dementium II</em></a>. Watsham notes that Renegade Kid is due to finish the master by the end of July, saying that the release is slated for "February-ish." He elaborates that the company will hopefully spend the next month focusing on "editing and polishing and tweaking." After that its time for the alpha and beta phases of development, and then the game will be sent to Nintendo.<br /><br />Watsham also mentions the Renegade Kid's other project <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/renegade-kid-working-on-platformer-for-ds/"><em>Maximillian and the Rise of the Mutant Mudds</em></a>, saying that the company has been talking to publishers and will hopefully have something to announce "in the next couple of weeks." Check out the video after the break.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=89253">GoNintendo</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/14/renegade-kid-dementium-ii-arrives-february-ish/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Renegade Kid: Dementium II arrives 'February-ish'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/14/renegade-kid-dementium-ii-arrives-february-ish/">Renegade Kid: Dementium II arrives 'February-ish'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 17:45:00 EST. It combines two of our most favorite things: mono-toned speech and <em>quick cuts to scary faces</em>. Seriously, this thing has a quease factor of about 8, which, we're told, is quite high. Players will use a water pack (think <span style="font-style: italic;">Mario Sunshine</span>) to double-jump chasms of doom and squirt the baddies to death.<br /><br />Renegade Kid plans to push its already impressive technical knowledge with the DS even further with <span style="font-style: italic;">Mudds</span>. The developer doesn't know if it'll go the retail route or check out <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dsiware">DSIware</a>, and there isn't so much as an inkling of a release window. Developer Renegade Kid apparently stumbled across some leftover brown paint, and is currently working up a sequel to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dementium-the-ward">Dementium: The Ward</a></em>. The game is set to continue the story of the first game, which had players stumbling through the darkened grimy halls of an abandoned hospital trying to discover a way out. Or at least some morphine to dull the pain.<br /><br />Notes Renegade Kid's Jools Watsham, "We were extremely satisfied with what we accomplished with the original <em>Dementium</em>, but knew we could do even more given the chance to develop a sequel." Little is known about the return trip into portable madness, though publisher SouthPeak promises even more hospital scares when <em>Dementium II</em> ships for the DS in the first part of 2010.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/03/renegade-kid-returning-to-the-hospital-in-dementium-ii/">Renegade Kid returning to the hospital in Dementium II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Jun 2009 14:45:00 EST. At last, forgotten souls in Europe will be able to wander <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dementium/"><em>Dementium: The Ward</em>'s</a> grainy, dimly lit halls. After scaring up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/01/metareview-dementium-the-ward-ds/">modest reviews</a> in the US and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/03/japanese-hospitals-want-dementium-off-store-shelves/">sending Japanese hospitals screaming</a>, Southpeak announced that it will publish Renegade Kid's spook-tastic freshman effort in Europe on April 17.<br /><br />The Nintendo DS survival horror title was first released in the US in 2007, and casts players in the role of an amnesiac stuck in a grimy hospital full of puzzles and the occasional not-so-friendly monster. Finally, survival horror fans in Europe will have something to keep them busy on the commuter train besides the latest <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-url?_encoding=UTF8&amp;search-type=ss&amp;index=books-uk&amp;field-author=Jamie%20Oliver">Jamie Oliver</a>, though honestly both are probably just as frightening.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/27/dementium-the-ward-releasing-in-april-in-poor-forgotten-eu/">Dementium: The Ward releasing in April ... in poor, forgotten Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Mar 2009 12:00:00 EST. And now you know everything we know about the game, which Renegade Kid's Jools Watsham describes as "the game that I'm most excited about ever in my career."<br /><br />The studio's owner and game director teased the project in a video posted on his personal blog, noting only his enthusiasm and that the game has nothing to do with Dracula, the rumored subject of an upcoming Wii project from the company. More information about the mysterious project is expected to be released at a later date, though Watsham concedes that it's likely "going to be a while." Until then, we await Renegade Kid to set off on its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/10/ds-fps-moon-eclipses-into-january-2009/">slightly delayed</a> trip to the Moon on January 13.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2008/12/30/renegade-kid-teases-new-project/">DSF</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/31/renegade-kid-teases-new-project/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Renegade Kid teases new project</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/31/renegade-kid-teases-new-project/">Renegade Kid teases new project</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 31 Dec 2008 10:00:00 EST. <br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/ds-fanboy-review-dementium-the-ward/"><em>Dementium: The Ward</em></a> hit Japan this year (along with a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/asylums-nurses-and-gore-dementiums-awesome-japanese-launch-e/">colorful launch event</a> for the game), yet is now enduring its first public outcry in the country. According to Yahoo! News (and Google's translation tools), the Japanese Association of Psychiatric Hospitals has requested that the title be removed from shops instantly, arguing that the game could instigate "discrimination and prejudice" against sufferers of psychiatric disorders. <br /><br />Interchannel distributes the game in Japan, and has yet to comment, but Mike Wilson of [U.S. publisher] Gamecock <em>did</em> proffer a view to MTV Multiplayer, stating that the criticism is down to a "lack of understanding or appreciation (and therefore fear of) games outside our little sub-culture." He also confessed to being "thrilled" by the extra attention the game has enjoyed as a result; as the game failed to penetrate the Japanese top 30, we know what he means.<br /><br />
<br />[Via <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/10/01/japanese-psychiatric-association-wants-dementium-the-ward-off-shelves/">MTV Multiplayer</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/03/japanese-hospitals-want-dementium-off-store-shelves/">Japanese hospitals want Dementium off store shelves</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Oct 2008 19:00:00 EST. <br /><em>Dementium: The Ward</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/26/dementium-gets-under-japanese-skin/">launches in Japan</a> today, and Japanese publisher Interchannel-Holon could not have found a more perfect venue to promote Renegade Kid's horror title*. "<a href="http://alcatraz.hy-system.com/">Alcatraz E.R.</a>" is a novelty restaurant in Tokyo's Shibuya ward with a mental asylum theme where patrons must announce their blood type before entering. They are then handcuffed by girls dressed as nurses who serve up food in surgical trays and drinks in hospital drips.<br /><br />In other words, it's a <span style="font-style: italic;">totally amazing and ideal</span> place for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/ds-fanboy-review-dementium-the-ward/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Dementium</span></a> promotion. Hit the break for more gory pics of the press-only event (our invites must have got lost in the mail). <br /><br />* Admittedly, they could have used an actual abandoned psychiatric asylum, but that probably comes with its own issues.<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/asylums-nurses-and-gore-dementiums-awesome-japanese-launch-e/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Asylums, nurses, and gore: Dementium's awesome Japanese launch event</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/asylums-nurses-and-gore-dementiums-awesome-japanese-launch-e/">Asylums, nurses, and gore: Dementium's awesome Japanese launch event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jun 2008 17:00:00 EST. It was a very unique title on the DS, striving to provide <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/dementium-sneaky-torsos-vomiting-maws-and-some-simple-strateg/">a moody atmosphere full of scares</a>. We think it succeeded, overall, and apparently so did Gamecock, as the title was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/japan-gets-demented-this-summer/">chosen to release in Japan</a>.<br /><br />Now, the game's Japanese site has launched and it's an incredibly effective platform for advertising the title. Just checking out the site makes you think J-horror, in the likes of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill"><em>Silent Hill</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/30/details-and-snapshots-from-fatal-frame-iv/"><em>Fatal Frame</em></a>. It's a great way to market the title, we believe, so be sure to <a href="http://www.icholon.co.jp/ds/dementium/index.html">hit up the site</a> for the goods.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.insertcredit.com/archives/002359.html">Insert Credit</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/26/dementium-gets-under-japanese-skin/">Dementium gets under Japanese skin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 May 2008 14:00:00 EST. The game is headed to Japan in a few months, as it will see a release to the region on June 26th. It will retail for a price of 5,040 Yen. Other than that, Japanese gamers should <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/dementium-sneaky-torsos-vomiting-maws-and-some-simple-strateg/">pretty much know what they're in for</a>. <br /><br />The game was, in our eyes, an under-appreciated gem and a very competent FPS on a system lacking them. We can't wait to see what Renegade Kid has in store for us with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/renegade-kid-says-moon-will-rock-harder-than-dementium/">their next game</a>.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/japan-gets-demented-this-summer/">Japan gets demented this summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Apr 2008 16:00:00 EST. You all know <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/ds-fanboy-review-dementium-the-ward/">we dug <em>Dementiunm</em></a>. It was a fine title and a decent FPS on a handheld that is seriously lacking in that department. Now, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/renegade-kid">Renegade Kid</a> is preparing their second FPS for Nintendo's handheld in <em>Moon</em>. What should we expect?<br /><br />Well, Renegade Kid's owner and creative director, Jools Watsham, spoke with Joystiq about the new project and reassured us it's going to be something we'll want to play. It's a pretty interesting read, if we may say so. Head on over and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/joystiq-interview-renegade-kid-versus-the-moon/">check it out</a> already!<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/renegade-kid-says-moon-will-rock-harder-than-dementium/">Renegade Kid says Moon will rock harder than Dementium</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 16:00:00 EST. When independent developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/renegadekid/">Renegade Kid</a> first announced its follow up title to last year's <span style="font-style: italic;">Dementium: the Ward</span>, few details were offered as to what it was exactly that the studio was up to. <br /><br />Titled simply <span style="font-style: italic;">Moon</span>, the game was said to again be played from the first-person, but beyond the vantage and supposed setting, we were left wondering. It didn't take us long to tire of the guessing game however, so we arranged to speak with Renegade Kid's owner and creative director Jools Watsham to find out more about the company's latest offspring, how it differs from <span style="font-style: italic;">Dementium</span>, and why the studio opted to go with a different publisher, in this case <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mastiff">Mastiff</a>, rather than <em>Dementium </em>publisher <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamecock">Gamecock</a>. Read on to see what he had to say.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/">Moon</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/#746119"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/moontitle_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/#746118"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/moon010_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/#746117"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/moon007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/#746116"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/moon006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/#746115"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/moon002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/joystiq-interview-renegade-kid-versus-the-moon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq interview: Renegade Kid versus the Moon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/joystiq-interview-renegade-kid-versus-the-moon/">Joystiq interview: Renegade Kid versus the Moon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 12:30:00 EST. <em>Dementium: The Ward</em>, developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/RenegadeKid/">Renegade Kid</a>'s debut release for the Nintendo DS, certainly pushed the frontier of what we expect from handheld gaming, but it was far from perfect. Company co-owner Jools Watsham conceded as much to us during a recent interview, but added that Renegade Kid's next project, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/14/renegade-kids-project-m-revealed-as-ds-action-title-moon/">recently announced</a> DS title <em>Moon</em>, will be even "more ambitious" than the studio's freshman effort.<br /><br />"We're being much more ambitious with the environments, particle effects, enemies and cinematic cut-scenes," commented Watsham. "Even though we pushed the DS with <em>Demenitum</em>, we were still being slightly cautious due to our time frame and growing experience with the platform. This time around with <em>Moon</em>, we are being a little less cautious while still be expressive and ambitious."<br /><br />He also took a moment to reflect back on <em>Dementium</em>, noting that the survival horror title's save system was a particular sticking point among those who played the game. "Most people hated the save system in <em>Dementium</em>... <em>Moon </em>is structured very differently than <em>Dementium</em>. The game is presented in episodes, and within each episode there are checkpoints that save your progress."<br /><br />For more from Renegade Kid's Watsham on <em>Moon</em>, including <em>Moon</em>'s possible future for the Wii and why the company's decision to go with publisher Mastiff instead of <em>Dementium </em>pub Gamecock is really much ado about nothing, check out our full interview on Monday and the first screens from the game below.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/">Moon</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/#746119"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/moontitle_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/#746118"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/moon010_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/#746117"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/moon007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/#746116"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/moon006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/moon-1/#746115"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/moon002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/11/renegade-kid-calls-moon-more-ambitious-than-dementium/">Renegade Kid calls Moon 'more ambitious' than Dementium</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Apr 2008 08:00:00 EST. From the fetid halls of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Dementium/">Dementium</a> </em>to the vacuous surface of the moon, developer Renegade Kid has proven that it isn't shy about taking its first two projects into uncharted territories. Publisher Mastiff has revealed that the dev's second project, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/mastiff-to-publish-renegade-kids-dementium-followup-project-m/">previously known as "Project M,"</a> is in fact a futuristic action title for the Nintendo DS simply called <em>Moon</em>.<br /><br />While we'll continue to wait for a simulation of that timeless Saturday night ritual of flashing our bare posteriors to cars on the freeway, <em>Moon </em>instead will take us to the lunar surface in 2058 for a first-person adventure that according to Mastiff's hilariously titled "Head Woof" Bill Swartz is "frequently violent" and "always disturbing." We'll have to take his word for it, as neither screens nor a release date have been released, leaving us to replay <em>Dementium </em>and squint at the screen while mentally replacing crazed mental patients with equally crazed aliens -- we should do all of our previews this way.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/14/renegade-kids-project-m-revealed-as-ds-action-title-moon/">Renegade Kid's Project M revealed as DS action title 'Moon'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 09:40:00 EST. That isn't to say there aren't a few worthwhile titles hitting the shelves, but the key words here are "a few." As in "not many." As in, "not a big burden on your wallet." Considering everything we've got coming up for the DS, around the world, that's probably pretty good news.<br />

Well, we're not going in for that this year. Our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/anti-guide/">gift guide</a> will help you find the best gifts in categories the other sites won't cover -- because we just made them up.</em><br />
<br />
Nintendo's indifference towards PAL regions is <span style="font-style: italic;">infamous</span>, but there's arguably less room for complaining when it comes to the DS. See, the DS is (and we do not use this phrase lightly) an importer's <em>dream</em>. It doesn't faff around with region-specific software, there's a huge library of diverse and interesting NTSC-only titles, and the games themselves are <em>cheap</em>. As in, <em>cheaper than they'll be when they arrive in the UK/Europe/Australia six months from now</em>. Frankly, we can't think of a good reason for you <em>not</em> to import.<br />
<br />
Which brings us to our latest anti-guide, featuring the five DS-related gifts that PAL regions won't be seeing until 2008 at the earliest -- if <span style="font-style: italic;">ever</span>. All deserve to be imported without hesitation, so read on fellow PAL folk, and prep that credit card!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/12/five-gifts-that-pal-gamers-should-import-this-christmas/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Five gifts that PAL gamers should import this Christmas</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/12/five-gifts-that-pal-gamers-should-import-this-christmas/">Five gifts that PAL gamers should import this Christmas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Dec 2007 19:30:00 EST. It's been a good year, but sadly, like all those <span style="font-style: italic;">other </span>years, it must come to an end. Before we roll out the red carpet for 2008, however, we wanted to give 2007 the send-off it deserves -- and what better way to do that than by offering up huge prize packs for our loyal readers? All you have to do is <span style="font-weight: bold;">leave a comment on this very post telling us which DS model(s) you own</span>, between now and December 26. The giveaway closes that night at 11:59 p.m. EST, and we'll announce the winners, chosen in a random drawing, on December 27. You may only enter <span style="font-weight: bold;">once per day</span>, and as usual, entries are limited to legal U.S. residents age 18 and older. Please check the <a href="http://www.weblogsinc.com/weblogs-giveaways-official-rules/">official rules</a> for any other questions.<br /><br />But enough of the details -- let's get to the prize packages!<br /><br /><strong>DS Fanboy's End of Year Fanswag Blowout<br /><u>Grand Prize </u><br /></strong>

The real star of this video, of course, is <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/16/game-center-cx-in-loving-detail/">Game Center CX</a>,</em> the current obsession of every retrogamer who can get it and read the text. If there's one thing <em>Dementium: The Ward</em> delivers on, it's atmosphere. From the audio -- which is truly something special in the DS library -- to the overall mystery of the story of Redmoor Hospital, <em>Dementium</em> provides exactly what it promises: a survival horror/FPS fusion that you can take with you.<br /><br />What it's not is perfect. Of course, no game is, but <em>Dementium</em> is peppered with a few looming frustrations that bring down the game experience. It <em>is</em> developer Renegade Kid's first effort, and at times it shows, and it's a somewhat clich&eacute;d game from a genre <em>built </em>on the power of clich&eacute;. The good news is that none of those frustrations are terribly huge. The bad news, however, is that some of those flaws may be just the sort that keep certain types of gamers away. <br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/ds-fanboy-review-dementium-the-ward/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DS Fanboy Review: Dementium: The Ward</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/ds-fanboy-review-dementium-the-ward/">DS Fanboy Review: Dementium: The Ward</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 23:50:00 EST. Word around the campfire is that the TRU folks made the decision not because of the game's rating, but because they didn't think it would be very popular and they didn't want to waste the space. Now, we're not sure what the gaming section is like at your local Toys 'R' Us, but we've seen some pretty questionable shovelware gracing the shelves down here. Is it an excuse to avoid any controversy, or is the retail giant planning to focus future shelf space only on release they feel are more likely to sell?<br /><br />Regardless of the reason, while we can again understand a retailer aimed at children skipping mature titles (if they were <a href="http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2549826">consistent</a> about it, that is), but randomly deciding what will and will not be popular is pretty lame. Another DS Fanboy contest has come to an end, and our copy of <em>Dementium</em> is wrapped up and ready for ... HellsHammer! The winning comment was left on the very first day of the contest, and read:<br /><br />28. Wow, I can't believe it's not been listed already...<br /><br />Clock Tower for PS1 was the scariest game ever. I was like 12 or 13 and I spent the night at my friend's house. His dad had just gotten a playstation and Clock Tower and we stayed up until about 3 am. The first time I saw that scissor man start opening closet doors to find (and stab) me, I called my mom to come bring me home. Needless to say, she wasn't exactly happy to pick me up, in a terrified state no less, at 3 am.<br />-<br />Also, I'd like to see a dsfanboy review on The Ward.<br /><br />Posted at 1:38PM on Oct 30th 2007 by HellsHammer<br /><br />Don't worry -- we'll have a review for you soon enough. For now, enjoy your free game, on us ... and watch this space for the next contest!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/05/ds-fanswag-and-dementium-goes-to/">DS Fanswag: And Dementium goes to ...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Nov 2007 10:40:00 EST. There is really only one game that came up on our radar of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/29/ds-releases-for-the-week-of-october-29th/">releases</a> this week and it's none other than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dem-hal"><em>Dementium: The Ward</em></a>. We like the survival-horror genre as it is, not to mention that this looks like the first engaging FPS game on the DS (not to say that <em>Metroid Prime Hunters</em> wasn't engaging, but the single-player was a bit lacking). We haven't a had a chance to pick the game up yet, but you can bet that we will be doing so <em>immediately</em>.<br /><br />What about you all? Are you planning on picking up the game or are you playing something else?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/02/wrup-getting-demented-edition/">WRUP: Getting Demented edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Nov 2007 16:40:00 EST. <em>Dementium: The Ward</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/16/joystiq-hands-on-dementium-the-ward/">surprised the hell out of us</a> at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamecock">Gamecock</a>'s E3 retreat at the Hotel California. The survival-horror game brought the genre to the Nintendo DS in an incredibly smooth package. We actually almost missed our next appointment at E3 because the game just grabbed us with an unexpected level of design, unexpected from a survival-horror FPS on a handheld. But did it hold reviewers' attention beyond that initial shock of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/22/joystiq-interview-dementiums-renegade-kid/">Renegade Kid</a>'s technical proficiency?<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.gamesradar.com/us/ds/game/reviews/article.jsp?articleId=20071022134537426073&amp;sectionId=1000">GamesRadar</a> <strong>(80/100)</strong>: "The DS isn't supposed to do FPS horror right? Those were our initial thoughts too, as you start out in a dark room with a layer of black fog. But as soon as you snag a flashlight (which is immediately), <em>Dementium</em> proves its worth by displaying vast areas, numerous enemies and lengthy corridors with disturbing zeal and no loss in framerate.<span id="bodyText"><span id="bodyText_PresentationModeControlsContainer_placeHolderHtml">"</span></span></li>
    <li><a href="http://ds.ign.com/articles/831/831835p1.html">IGN</a> <strong>(80/100)</strong>: "It's pretty amazing that, for a system that's been out for three years now, there have been very few first-person shooters made for it. The Nintendo DS is a prime (no pun intended) system for the genre, what with its touch screen that can easily mimic the precise movement of mouse controls. <em>Dementium: The Ward</em> fills that void nicely - it's appropriately gory (it is a shooter, after all) but also adds an element of mystery to the whole thing. Some design issues do get in the way a tiny bit, but not so much that you'll hate on the game...and unless you've got the expectations of a PC shooter fan, it's hard to not be impressed with what Renegade Kid managed to pull off on the Nintendo DS hardware."</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/games/dementium-the-ward/ds/game-reviews/review/6322/1832/">Game Daily</a> <strong>(80/100)</strong>: "<em>Dementium</em> doesn't do anything we haven't seen before, such as playing a piano to reveal a secret, acquiring special colored keycards to open doors and shot gunning monsters. Yet at the same time, the experience feels new, since there's almost nothing like it on the platform, save for the aged <em>Resident Evil Deadly Silence</em>. So shut off the lights, put on a pair of headphones and get lost in this demented adventure. It's without question one of the DS' most under hyped games, and also one of its best."</li>

A megaphone simulator in which you yell into the DS and your voice is amplified and distorted by the tiny speakers (in 3D)? <br />Timed to coincide with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/dementium-the-launch-filed-from-austin-tx/">today's release</a> of the Gamecock-published horror FPS <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Dementium/">Dementium: The Ward</a></em>, publisher Mastiff has announced that they'll be taking over the publishing role for developer Renegade Kid's sophomore effort.<br /><br />We still don't know much about the followup, except that it will also be on Nintendo DS, will use the same 3D engine as Dementium, and goes by the ominous working title "Project M." Will it be another M-rated scare fest, or does that 'M' stand for something far less frightening ... maybe Project Mittens or Project Milk (and cookies)? Gamecock held the launch party for their first title, Renegade Kid's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/renegade-kid-on-dementium-and-the-limits-of-the-ds/"><em>Dementium: The Ward</em></a> last night in Austin, Texas, and we (knew some people who) were on the scene to report on the <em>creepy</em> goings-on. Did any <em>gruesome monster attacks </em>take place? You'll have to wait until the end of this sentence to find out (they didn't)!<br /><br />Apparently people are so eager for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/ds-daily-favorite-horror-game/">DS horror game</a> that they've been writing in to Gamecock to share their excitement. According to chief executive Mike Wilson, an industry veteran since <em>Doom</em> days, the amount of mail received is unusual for an unreleased game-- which bodes well for consumer interest.<br /><br />The party continued with a short film and a performance by <a href="http://www.theunbearables.com/">The Unbearables</a>, and nobody fell into the hellish depths of madness or anything. Check out the Joystiq link for video and a gallery! And hit the Unbearables link above for some free music!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/scares-and-heartwarming-fan-letters-at-the-dementium-launch-part/">Scares and heartwarming fan letters at the Dementium launch party</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 31 Oct 2007 16:40:00 EST. An art-house theater in Austin, Texas was the location of last night's launch party for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Dementium/">Dementium: The Ward</a></em>, a survival horror game for Nintendo's DS which goes on sale today. Made by three guys in a garage - each had over a decade of development experience - Renegade Kid signed with Gamecock in May of this year, and the game was gold by the end of October. <br /><br />"The game technically releases tomorrow," Gamecock's Jason Livergood told the audience of developers, adding that this hadn't kept some retailers from releasing it a few days early. Not only have people started buying the game, they've started writing the publisher.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dementium-the-launch/">Dementium: The Launch</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dementium-the-launch/#466816"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/dementiumlaunch-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dementium-the-launch/#466819"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/dementiumlaunch-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dementium-the-launch/#466817"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/dementiumlaunch-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dementium-the-launch/#466814"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/dementiumlaunch-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dementium-the-launch/#466818"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/dementiumlaunch-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/dementium-the-launch-filed-from-austin-tx/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dementium: The Launch (filed from Austin, TX)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/dementium-the-launch-filed-from-austin-tx/">Dementium: The Launch (filed from Austin, TX)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 31 Oct 2007 13:29:00 EST. In fact, there's just that, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/02/08/meta-review-resident-evil-deadly-silence/">Resident Evil: Deadly Silence</a>, </em>and, <em>we guess,</em> <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/metareview-touch-the-dead/">Touch the Dead</a>. </em>However, since we <em>really</em> wanted to talk about horror gaming today, we think we'll go outside the boundaries of the DS library for today's discussion.<br /><br />There's a pile of <em>Resident Evil </em>games, of course, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill"><em>Silent Hills</em></a>, as well as other survival horror classics like <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clock_Tower_%28series%29">Clock Tower</a>, Fatal Frame, </em>and<em> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siren_%28video_game%29">Siren</a>. </em>Not to mention the <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_8AEaAFuDM">House of the Dead</a> </em>series, and its precursors <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiller_(video_game)">Chiller</a> </em>and <em><a href="http://www.justgamesretro.com/SEGACD/corpsekiller.html">Corpse Killer</a>. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Castlevania/">Castlevania</a></em> is at least horror-<em>themed</em>, if not all that frightening.<em> </em>From <em><a href="http://www.astrosmash.com/bluesky/games/credits/action2.html">Night Stalker</a> </em>to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasmagoria_%28computer_game%29"><em>Phantasmagoria</em></a>, games have been trying to scare us since the developers realized we could care enough to <em>get</em> scared. <br /><br />What is your favorite horror game, and why? Is it because of the presentation or the gameplay? In our minds, horror is one of the few genres of gaming in which lackluster control schemes and not-so-great combat are less important than telling a good story and setting atmosphere. Which is why it should be no big surprise that <em>Silent Hill 2</em> is our favorite game in the genre.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/ds-daily-favorite-horror-game/">DS Daily: Favorite horror game?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 31 Oct 2007 09:00:00 EST. We've been talking about it forever, and now you've got a chance to win it -- a copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dem-hal"><em>Dementium: The Ward</em></a>, valued at $29.99, will land in the lap of one lucky reader. Want it? All you have to do is leave a comment on this post talking about the scariest moment you've ever had playing a horror game. Did someone happen to slip up behind you while you were sneaking past Bad Things? We want to hear about it. Never been scared? Flex your anti-horror muscles all you want. Just leave a comment -- and remember, <strong>you can only enter once per day</strong> -- between now and Sunday, November 4, because at 11:59 EST, we'll be closing down the contest. Monday, November 5, we'll toss everyone into the random drawing and choose one winner, who'll receive a spankin' new copy of the game. <br /><br />There are, of course, a few caveats. Winners must be both U.S. citizens and over the age of 18. You can check out the full official rules <a href="http://www.weblogsinc.com/weblogs-giveaways-official-rules/">here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/ds-fanswag-check-into-the-ward/">DS Fanswag: Check into The Ward</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Oct 2007 10:40:00 EST. The lazy -- and cheap! -- days of summer are behind us, and the holidays are just around the corner. That means a number of games will be jockeying for our money over the next few months. It's a bittersweet time. Sure, we'll be doing lots of gaming, but, oh, the lack of money ... it's so tragic.<br />
