WayForward certainly does -- the Contra 4 developer spent two years producing the delightful Game Boy Color platformer, only to see it die a death at retail, its chances cruelly crushed by the increasing obsolescence of its host platform, as well as the rise of the newly released Game Boy Advance. Boasting an engrossing mix of Metroid-style puzzles and neat visual tricks, the game was an unsung gem that emphatically failed to register on the gaming public's radar.

A sequel was planned for the Advance, only for the project to be inexplicably shelved with the game 50% complete, but WayForward hasn't forgotten about the series entirely. With the all-conquering Contra 4 now out on store shelves and begging to be bought, the developer has posted a poll on its site, asking whether or not we'd be interested in purchasing a Shantae follow-up, and what platform we'd like it to appear on.

Hence, we implore all of you to hit the link below and get your vote on. If you're still wavering about giving thirty seconds of your time to one of the best DS-related causes we've heard of in ages, go past the break for footage of the canned GBA title.

Then go and get your vote on.
Continue reading A DS sequel to Shantae rests in our hands

A DS sequel to Shantae rests in our hands originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Dec 2007 09:45:00 EST. A new glucose monitor targeted at children with Juvenile Diabetes hopes to entice its young users by doubling as a video game. The GlucoBoy tests small amounts of blood for glucose levels, just like a normal glucose self-diagnosis device. Upon plugging it into a Game Boy Advance or DS, however, GlucoBoy rewards players for routine glucose checks or having correct blood sugar levels by giving them points, which can be used to unlock mini-games on the cartridge.

Interestingly, we originally reported about GlucoBoy way back in 2005, with Engadget having reported on it first in 2004. Due to the device's small market, its inventor Paul Wessel has spent three years trying to get approval from Nintendo to produce the device. GlucoBoy launched in Australia on World Diabetes Day, with plans to bring the glucose-testing device to more regions soon.

[Via Next-Gen]
GlucoBoy turns diabetes blood-testing into a game originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Dec 2007 06:55:00 EST.
The drive to catch all 493 beasts in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl is causing a surge in demand for old Pokémon games. JJGames' used video games price tracker shows the average price for used, classic Pokémon games rising over 20 percent since early Feburary. Used game prices in general went down nearly 20 percent during the same period.

As the above graph shows, the Pokémon prices largely track with the market through the end of February, when they surged ahead of the DS games' April 22 release. The prices take a downward turn for the month after Diamond and Pearl's release, then shoot up again after Memorial Day, the traditional start of summer.

While this meteoric rise might encourage you to invest all your savings into used Pokémon games, we encourage caution. A well-diversified portfolio of used games is the only way to avoid fiascos like this one.
Diamond and Pearl release raises classic Pokémon prices originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Jun 2007 12:29:00 EST. Sure, we like to use our DS Lite to play GBA games (even if they stick out some), but sometimes you just can't beat the feeling of pulling a GBA SP out of your pocket, flipping it open and playing some Omega Factor. Apparently, the GBA SP's time on this Earth is limited.

Of course, we can understand why Nintendo would discontinue the handheld, but it doesn't mean we're not a tad bit hurt to see the handheld leave our life so quickly.
GBA discontinued at Target? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Jun 2007 15:00:00 EST. You've got to be wily to get to the goods before the FatWalleters and the CAGs!

We've got a list of all the DS and GBA software on sale after the jump. Don't expect to find all of it-- most of it has been out of stock for months or years at most stores, and the price changed to clear out remaining copies. But we hope you do find what you're looking for in abundance. We wish we could go tomorrow and check it out ourselves. By the time we get there, there won't be anything but cobwebs and tumbleweeds, and those will probably be regular price.

[Thanks, ali emamdjomeh!]
When the game appeared some years ago on Super NES, as Final Fantasy III, localization efforts toned down some of the stronger language. Thus, "death" became "doom," "pub" became "cafe," and "holy" became "pearl" (huh?). Even instances of minor nudity, pixelated as they were, got covered up.

Pictured above, "Doomgaze" (SNES version name) has been properly restored to "Deathgaze" in FFVI Advance. Could the final release retain all of the original Japanese creation's edginess?

It's no secret that the PSP (as with any system) gets ports of games from other consoles. Most of the ports to PSP logically come from the PlayStation 2. But all that is starting to change. With the PS3 on the rise and the PS2 on the decline, PSP is starting to get ports from some unexpected places.

The DS has many a game that it's shared with the GBA, but recently it seems like more and more GBA games are jumping over to Sony's portable. The most obvious of these are all of the recently announced Final Fantasy projects. From Final Fantasy Tactics to just plain ol' Final Fantasy, these GBA remakes are being remade again for the PSP. But it doesn't just end there, the PSP will also see a port of the GBA RPG title Riviera (which is great for me, since I never played that game).

Of course, while it seems like quite a few PSP games are from GBA land, that isn't the only system sending off titles to PSP's library. Xbox games like Xyanide and Painkiller: Hell Wars are reported to have versions coming out this year for PSP and the DS racer Asphalt Urban GT 2 will be out shortly. Even the PC isn't exempt as fantastic physics platformer Gish has a release date for our system of choice.

The future though seems to be the Wii and PSP connection. While Alien Syndrome is one of the only Wii/PSP games announced so far, the fact that Wii games have to be developed independently from the rest of the home consoles means many developers may be looking to PSP versions as another source of profit. Of course as with any business move, these ports will have to make money if this is to become a serious trend.

PSP getting ports from new sources originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 21 Jan 2007 22:45:00 EST. "Square Enix is whipping up a wild lineup for PSP this year ... These guys are serious too! I'm talking new games, remakes of old classics, and an all-new, unexpected Final Fantasy spinoff that will make the fanboys flip."

Well, we can check off "remakes of old classics" off the list: Square Enix just announced their "20th Anniversary Series," which will be heading to PSP. First two games on the table? Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition and Final Fantasy II Anniversary Edition. Both games will feature the enhancements of the Nintendo-published Final Fantasy I & II Advance: Dawn of Souls, and also include new CG movies and "further enhancements."

While these aren't the games we've been clamoring for, I guess it's a step in the right direction. Any support from Square Enix is better than none, right? As it stands now, I'd much rather wait for Crisis Core than these remakes of remakes. Hopefully, we'll see the rest of the "wild lineup" that EGM hinted at.

[Thanks, zaki! Rather than leaving that clunky old Cube out in the entertainment center, Wii News recommends the Datel Advance Game Port, a sleek-looking accessory that plugs into the GameCube/Wii memory card slot and lets you play Game Boy Advance games on the big screen.

What Wii News doesn't tell you is that the Datel Advance Game Port is a buggy mess. In our reviews of the discontinued hardware, games ran with inconsistent slowdown, laggy controls and audio problems. What's more, the port only plays Game Boy Advance games, unlike the official Game Boy Player, which works with games dating all the way back to the black-and-white classic portable.

If you're really desperate for Game Boy games on your TV, spring for the Nintendo-approved solution and not this third-party knock-off. Or just sit around and wait for the oft-rumored addition of Game Boy support for the Virtual Console.

Play GBA games (badly) on the Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Jan 2007 11:05:00 EST. Connor was vacationing with his family in Thailand when the fatal accident occurred. The UK (230V/50Hz) and Thailand (220V/50Hz) use similar voltage standards.

Nintendo did not issue any further comments, claiming that details of the incident were still unclear. A South Carolina woman decided her son was so out of line when he stole the Game Boy Advance she had purchased as his Christmas present that she had the 12 year-old arrested. He was charged, as a juvenile, with petty larceny.

The GBA theft follows an alleged string of offenses carried out by the boy, including shoplifting, stealing from mom's wallet, and punching a cop. At his court appearance, the mother will seek to turn her son over to the state Department of Juvenile Justice.
Kid arrested for stealing Xmas present from under tree originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Dec 2006 20:55:00 EST. In speaking with Reuters, Nintendo head honcho Reggie Fils-Aime lays it all on the table, revealing that the GBA is still selling well and is a great first handheld system for young gamers.

"We think that Game Boy Advance certainly has at least one more holiday season left in it. For us, it continues to be a great stepping stone for five-, six-, seven-year-old consumers to have their first great handheld gaming experience and then transition right into DS. For as great a Black Friday weekend that we had on DS, we had just as good a selling season so far on Game Boy Advance."

This is all confusing, making us wonder just how long of a life the handheld really has left. Reggie isn't willing to divulge anything on its future or a successor to its throne, obviously, instead leaving us to jump to our own conclusions. Considering the wild popularity of the DS, is there even a future for a new Game Boy?
Nintendo: the Game Boy has one more holiday left in it originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Nov 2006 13:40:00 EST. The movie, which is based on J.K Rowling's fifth book, has Harry returning to Hogwart's only to be questioned about his previous year's encounter with Lord Voldemort. With the wizarding community questioning that Lord Voldemort has returned, as well as the Minister of Magic doubting Dumbledore, it's all up to Harry to set things straight.

While this is the first Harry Potter game to grace the newest consoles, the DS and GBA versions of the game should not be excluded in the excitement of all Hogwarts-loving fans out there. With multiple characters at your disposal, the concepts presented by this game sound interesting and we'll update you as news develops.
New Harry Potter game under development originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Nov 2006 10:55:00 EST. Whether you're a fan of skateboarding or gaming, the man has made an impact, often considered equal, in both cultures. With his first game being released way back when on the original Playstation, folks have had plenty of time to learn how to bust kickflips and grind massive rails in his games.

His games on the GBA have been no joke, either. Featuring an isolated bird's eye view, previous games featured excellent 3D graphics and gameplay on the portable system. But where the old games were all about busting big lines and tearing up the course to your heart's content, this game is more of a racing game and, as such, you're limited in the tricks department.
Continue reading DS Fanboy Review: Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (GBA)

DS Fanboy Review: Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (GBA) originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 10:55:00 EST. Something about taking a small, boldly-colored plastic pony and combing its hair for hours just clicks with us. It was worth the torrent of swirlies and beatings we took during High School for our High five if you love My Little Pony T-shirt. We refused to stop wearing it. It was our favorite shirt.

Anyway, today we suddenly find ourselves having more of a spring in our step on those days we've played with our ponies and catching ourselves looking at the sky with an awe for life unequalled. Playing with those ponies puts us in a great mood. It gives us a reason to live and no matter how many times we're caught playing with them in the dark, we'll never stop. We'll never stop loving those ponies.

So it is with great elation and comfort that we found out a new GBA game based on the property was being handled by THQ. Being able to take the ponies on the road without, well ... actually taking them on the road (you don't want to see us have to give them a bath, because we will). Soon, we'll be able to practice our obsession safely behind the screen of our GBA SP or DS Lite.
GBA gets new My Little Ponies game, DS Fanboy staff reveals dark secret originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Nov 2006 12:15:00 EST. What does this matter, you ask? Looking at the earnings can really cut through the internet hype, jargon, rumors, and walls of flame and really show you whether or not a company is in trouble (financially). Let's start with the company that's in trouble: Sony.

Sony has reported earnings that have "plummeted 94 percent to $14.4 million because of costs related to its laptop battery recall. But it also reported a $369 million operating loss in its video game business because of start-up costs for the PlayStation 3. Sony's game revenues decreased 20 percent to $1.4 billion from a year ago because of a decline in PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2 sales, as well as a price cut on the PS2." Ouch! There's also a ton of spare PS3 inventory in Japan (save the blue laser diodes, we imagine) and $3 billion short term and long term debt. They've got $4.7 billion in cash, though, so they're not "under" yet. Should the PS3 fail, Sony will have one hell of a time coming back.

Microsoft, naturally, has a war chest of cash -- $31.4 billion (in gold bullions, too!). Let's talk sales: "sales rose 70 percent in the Entertainment and Devices division, which includes games, to $1.03 billion in the quarter. The division cut its loss from $173 million a year ago to $96 million. Microsoft says it is on target to hit profitability by the fiscal year that ends June 30, 2008." On XBL, there are over 4 million subscribers. Even more good news (for Microsoft, they're probably throwing a $2.3 million party for this) is that the 360 consoles in Japan that come bundled with Blue Dragon have sold out. Yep, all 20 of them (joking, joking).

What of Nintendo? "Nintendo reported sales of $2.5 billion, up 69 percent from a year earlier. Net income was $458.6 million, up from a loss a year ago. Nintendo has $6.6 billion in cash. Nintendo is forecasting sales of $6.2 billion and profits of $843 million for the year ended March 31, 2007." Everything else is pudding -- of course they're selling tons of DS's and GBA's... Nintendo's doing well, as usual (GameCube aside).
A financial look at the "console war"... how each is faring originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Oct 2006 11:00:00 EST. Rather, a young boy playing a GBA, hence the pun in the name of the set at Flickr -- "Game Boy Around the World."

Ah, Game Boy-spotting, Game Boys in the wild, Game Boys gone wild -- the humor potential here is almost frightening in its vastness. Too bad the photos are actually good; we'd much prefer to crack jokes, but we're too busy goggling at all the wonders. We just hope the kid featured in the pictures took some time to look around as well ... after all, this project is funny because it's true.

[Via Joystiq]
Have GBA, will travel originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Oct 2006 09:56:00 EST. With the release of a super-easy way to downgrade firmware, it seems like many of you are ready to experiment with homebrew. While I prefer to support original endeavors, it's pretty obvious that the greatest lure for homebrew is <strike>piracy</strike> emulation. Exophase is a relatively new coder to the PSP homebrew scene, but he's already come out with a full speed Game Boy Advance emulator for the system. In an interview with DCEmu, he reveales some interesting info about his work.

DCEmu: The release of this emulator has been compared to the shock of Ultrahle and Bleem, emulators that werent thought possible until they were released, are you proud that your the first to get a decentplayable GBA Emulator out there ?
Exophase: Heh, well, I'm just glad that at least some people can play some games well. How is it that this series keeps popping up this fall? Are Square and Nintendo trying to kill us with FF propaganda and brainwash us so that we will never play another RPG, nor will we want to?

Joining forces with Eleven-Up Inc., Camelot will now work exclusively on the PC platform.

Besides both Golden Sun titles, Camelot is responsible for Mario Tennis: Power Tour (GBA), as well as Mario Power Tennis and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour on GameCube. Camelot's departure from the Nintendo scene officially puts to rest rumors that the studio will release a new Golden Sun installment for Wii.

Update: Looks like we jumped the gun. Most sources, including Camelot's official website, seem to indicate that the studio is merely branching out onto the PC platform with 'I LOVE GOLF!' A Wii RPG should still be in the works.
Golden Sun creator parting ways with Nintendo [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Aug 2006 15:55:00 EST. The bad news: it's in Japanese. What we can extract from the site: the series 1 package, which includes the aforementioned three titles, will launch on July 13th in Japan for 2000 ¥ (about $17); the series 2 package, which includes Coloris, Digidrive, Orbital, and Soundvoyager, launches two weeks later for the same price.

More good news: we've embeddded a trailer after the break, so if you're unable (or unwilling) to navigate the Japanese page, keep reading to get a glimpse of some GBA-goodness.

[Via 4cr]
Continue reading Tour Nintendo.co.jp's bit Generations site

Tour Nintendo.co.jp's bit Generations site originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 03 Jul 2006 17:55:00 EST. Eurogamer reports that in an interview with Reuters, Satoru Iwata shot down the idea of creating new versions of the hugely popular GBA, stating that it would be pouring cold water on the DS and the DS Lite's unfathomably hot success. He says that he "would have a second thought about using our resources on what would be the next generation of Game Boy Advance considering the strong support DS is now enjoying."

So is that the end for our beloved GBA? Not by a long shot. Many developers are still churning out games for the system--given how many people have one stashed inside their pockets, it's still very much a viable and even lucrative market. Besides, you'll want to keep one around if you simply can't handle the sight of a GBA cart sticking out of a DS Lite.
Nintendo says goodbye to GBA originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 May 2006 08:03:00 EST. The original Original Generation was released inJapan in 2002, while the Original follow-up arrived in early 2005.

While the super-deformedstrategy RPGs will feature Banpresto's original pilots and mechs, the Original Generation titles unfortunatelyleave out SRT's traditional mash-up of Japanese anime robot warriors from Mazinger Z to NeonGenesis Evangelion. At least GBA and DS owners with a love for SRPGs will have something extra to look forward tolater this year.

[Via GameSpot;image taken from AdvancedMN]

See also:
No, that Amazon has long since been uprooted, trampled and burnt to the ground tomake way for computer servers to power the modern and decidedly more well-stocked Amazon. That's progress for you.

Amazon has made quite some progress thisyear, with their Christmas sales reaching epic proportions. They've reportedly sold more than 108 million items withvirtual carts being filled at a rate of 41 orders per second. It was a blue Christmas for them, as the top-sellingitems in video game hardware were, of course, the Pearl Blue GBA SP and the Electric Blue DS. Oh, and that PSPthingamabob.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO was also kind enough to impart some holidaywell-wishing. "We are grateful to our customers for shopping with us this holiday season and we wish everyone ahappy new year."
In other words, thanks for giving us your money and we hope you're still alive next year soyou can do it again.
Nintendo cements Amazon's record Xmas originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Dec 2005 13:35:00 EST. What a novel and hitherto unexploredidea! Those crazy guys at Hudson have plumbed their archives of goodness and yanked out a few classics they thought youmight enjoy again and then promptly squeezed them into tiny little GBA carts. You know, those things that go into thatbottom slot thingy in your DS.

The "Hudson Best Collection" label will see the release of severalgreat NES games, including Lode Runner, Nuts & Milk, Star Soldier, AdventureIsland, Bomberman and, er, Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom. Hmm, sounds like that last oneshould be tossed. Dreadful puns aside, I fondly remember my time with Lode Runner. I loved that game - the tension, thesatisfaction of stealing a pile of gold and the realization that....you just dug yourself into a freakin' hole. Again!Man, I hated that game.
Hudson classics coming back originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Dec 2005 17:58:00 EST.
