Having waited over a month for Warner Bros. and Rocksteady to tidy up the PC code for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/batman-arkham-city"><em>Batman: Arkham City</em></a>, players have expressed frustration with severe performance issues encountered in the game. Warner has <a href="http://community.batmanarkhamcity.com/forums/showthread.php/10585-PC-DirectX-11-Issues-Please-Read">confirmed</a> that a stuttering framerate is tied to DirectX 11 features, which should be disabled while a patch finds its way to Gotham's cordoned-off criminal depository.<br />
<br />
Disabling DirectX 11 (under "Settings" in the Games for Windows launcher, and "Configure PC Options" in your Steam library) will drop the game down to DirectX 9. It's not as disfiguring as it sounds, but let's not make excuses for a game launching in such an unsteady state. We'll be sure to let you know when the punitive effects of tesselation and horizon-based ambient occlusion have been eliminated.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/25/batman-arkham-city-pc-performance-issues-linked-to-dx11-patch/">Batman: Arkham City PC performance issues linked to DX11, patch incoming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Nov 2011 10:45:00 EST. This week, Microsoft is offering discounts across Xbox Live, Windows PC and its mobile platforms. It's being billed as <a href="http://majornelson.com/2011/11/22/xbox-live-fan-appreciation-sale/">a fan appreciation sale</a> and we're sure Microsoft would appreciate if its fans spent money. It's kinda how these things go.<br />
<br />
Highlights include <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-meat-boy"><em>Super Meat Boy</em></a> for $5, a few discounted add-ons for <em>Left 4 Dead 2</em> and <em>Homefront</em>, half-off Indie Games titles <em>Flotilla </em>and <em>Weapon of Choice</em>, and a few PC and mobile joints for good measure. If you want to spend, there's a good chance you can find something to spend money on here. The only thing we'd suggest is that perhaps you hold off on the five different premium Xbox 360 themes available. There's no word on whether or not they'll be compatible with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/22/new-xbox-dashboard-brings-cloud-storage-beacons-and-more-on-de/">your new Dashboard next month</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/23/microsoft-discounts-super-meat-boy-other-content-across-its-pla/">Microsoft discounts Super Meat Boy, other content across its platforms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 04:00:00 EST. Warner Bros. has deemed today the day to reveal <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/batman-arkham-city">Batman: Arkham City</a></em>'s delayed PC launch date as November 18, one month to the day after its arrival on consoles.<br />
<br />
The Games for Windows version was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/20/batman-arkham-city-pc-delayed-until-november/">delayed last month</a> via a terse WB announcement, which didn't provide an explanation at the time. We can exclusively reveal why today: Bruce Wayne is <em>exhausted</em>, y'all. He's got a lot going on, between film and TV and video games, and he just needed a few weeks to chill. Okay, <em>that</em> and PC version bug fixes.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/18/batman-arkham-city-swoops-to-pc-on-november-18/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Batman: Arkham City swoops to PC on November 18</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/18/batman-arkham-city-swoops-to-pc-on-november-18/">Batman: Arkham City swoops to PC on November 18</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Oct 2011 11:30:00 EST. It's about time. Microsoft is finally consolidating the Games for Windows Marketplace and Xbox.com into one big ultra mega site. Makes sense, right?<br />
<br />
The transition will take place on July 11, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-07-01-microsoft-to-merge-gfw-and-xbox-com">Eurogamer</a> confirmed, when all of the Games For Windows content will find a new home at Xbox.com. Back in November, the GFW site received <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/15/games-for-windows-marketplace-relaunches-right-on-time/">quite the overhaul</a> in an attempt to bring a more accessible experience to its web hub.<br />
<br />
Currently, there's <a href="http://forums.xbox.com/gfw/general/news/f/277/p/30870/186736.aspx#186736">a thread on the Xbox.com forums</a> discussing the move, if you feel like being part of the conversation. You know, if you <em>want</em>. No pressure!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/02/games-for-windows-marketplace-to-merge-with-xbox-com-on-july-11/">Games for Windows Marketplace to merge with Xbox.com on July 11</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 02 Jul 2011 01:00:00 EST. Codemasters probably had no idea the accidental synergy it was creating, dropping the Monte Carlo DLC for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a> the same week that the soon-to-be hit <a href="http://www.facebook.com/officialmontecarlomovie">romantic comedy of the same name</a> was arriving in theaters, but here we are. Unfortunately, Selena Gomez isn't a new rallycross driver in the upcoming pack, and as far as we know, there isn't any rallycross in the film. What a waste!<br />
<br />
Regardless, the $10 pack is now available on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 via their respective digital storefronts, and on PC via the Games for Windows Marketplace. It comprises eight new tracks set in the miniscule Mediterranean monarchy of Monaco (specifically Monte Carlo, of course). If, like us, you don't have a summer villa in the DLC's lavish setting, you may want to take a peek at the maps in action before purchasing the pack -- for that, we suggest heading into our gallery below.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/">DiRT 3 (Monte Carlo Track Pack DLC)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/#4258784"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dirt3montedlc1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/#4258785"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dirt3montedlc2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/#4258786"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dirt3montedlc3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/#4258787"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dirt3montedlc4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dirt-3-monte-carlo-track-pack-dlc/#4258788"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dirt3montedlc5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/29/dirt-3-monte-carlo-dlc-now-available-worldwide/">Dirt 3 Monte Carlo DLC now available worldwide</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Jun 2011 12:30:00 EST. <em>Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City</em> certainly isn't <em>Left 4 Dead</em>, but I wouldn't blame you for confusing the two. <em>ORC</em> is, after all, a four player co-op zombie shooter, featuring a variety of zombie types that largely resemble what both <em>Left 4 Dead</em> games featured before it (a large tank-like zombie, a zombie who scurries on the ceiling and reels you in with his tongue, etc.).<br />
<br />
In fact, other than a third-person perspective and a <em>Resident Evil</em> landmark setting, I was getting some serious d&eacute;ja vu playing <em>ORC</em>. Except for one crucial point: it wasn't quite as fun as <em>Left 4 Dead</em>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city-e3-2011/">Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (E3 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city-e3-2011/#4203547"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/reracooncitye3licker_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city-e3-2011/#4203548"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/reracooncitye3screenshotbeltwayusspecops_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city-e3-2011/#4203549"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/reracooncitye3screenshotbloodfrenzy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city-e3-2011/#4203550"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/reracooncitye3screenshotfoureyesvector_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city-e3-2011/#4203551"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/reracooncitye3screenshotinfection_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/08/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city-preview-left-2-die/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City preview: Left 2 Die</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/08/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city-preview-left-2-die/">Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City preview: Left 2 Die</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 18:00:00 EST. Starting today and running until Thursday, April 28 at 11:30am EST, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a> is half-off on the Games For Windows marketplace -- down to $15 from its usual $30 asking price. Sounds like a perfect opportunity to give a lonely <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Resident_Evil_characters">Majini</a> a home. Sure, they may be parasitic shells of their former selves, but that doesn't mean they don't have <em>feelings</em>, guys.<br />
<br />
It should be noted that this is the base edition of <em>Resident Evil 5</em>, sans both DLC packs: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/19/resident-evil-5-lost-in-nightmares-dlc-easter-egg/">Lost in Nightmares</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/19/resident-evil-5-lost-in-nightmares-dlc-easter-egg/">Desperate Escape</a>. It also doesn't include <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/resident-evil-5-versus-dlc-confirmed-costs-money/">the Versus mode</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/22/resident-evil-5-is-half-price-on-games-for-windows/">Resident Evil 5 is half price on Games For Windows</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Apr 2011 02:00:00 EST. Despite what you learn in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/fable-3/">Fable 3</a></em>, not everyone gets to be king. When it comes to PC gaming digital distribution platforms, there's only one king and its name is Steam ("Your Highness" will suffice). Microsoft, also known as the lowly Duke of Games for Windows, has finally seen fit to recognize Steam's monarchy and, as a form of tribute, will be offering its own <em>Fable 3</em> on the reigning platform as well as its own.<br />
<br />
But nothing is ever that simple in court politics! While both digital releases, as well as the retail version, will be simultaneous, only Games for Windows Marketplace shoppers will be treated to a free copy of <em>Fable: Lost Chapters</em>, the expanded update of the original <em>Fable</em>. Steam shoppers will get the far less desirable Rebel's Weapon &amp; Tattoo Pack, featuring some, uh ... weapons and tattoos for your hero. Retail shoppers get the security of a box and a disc, so that's something.<br />
<br />
Fable 3 is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/fable-3-pc-release-date/">due on PCs on May 17</a> in North America and shortly thereafter <em>elsewhere</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/fable-3-steam/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Fable 3 will be crowned on Steam as well as Games for Windows</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/fable-3-steam/">Fable 3 will be crowned on Steam as well as Games for Windows</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Apr 2011 11:32:00 EST. It doesn't look like the Umbrella Security Service team got much training before embarking on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city"><em>Operation Raccoon City</em></a>. Taking a zombie hostage? Really? That's how you plan to negotiate with Mr. Leon S. Kennedy? Microsoft's Games for Windows Marketplace is having a buy one, get one free sale on Epic Games shooters starring guys with <em>really</em> <em>big</em> arms. Specifically, the digital storefront is giving anyone who buys next week's foul-mouthed FPS <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bulletstorm">Bulletstorm</a></em> a free copy of the original <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gears-of-war">Gears of War</a></em>.<br />
<br />
The deal will be valid from February 22 -- <em>Bulletstorm's</em> on-sale date -- through March 8. People Can Fly's game will carry a sticker price of $59.99, while <em>Gears </em>normally goes for $19.99.<br />

<em>Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne</em> is available today on the <a href="http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/dailydeal/day6/">Games for Windows Marketplace</a> for just $0.99. A great deal on a noir love story with a high body count.<br />
<br />
Speaking of Max, dearest of all our MIA protagonists, there's still nothing new to report on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/max-payne-3"><em>Max Payne 3</em></a>. Having already had nearly two years worth of release windows close, the game's latest official delay was this past <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/08/max-payne-3-delayed-beyond-october/">June</a>. We'd guess that the triple <em>Payne</em> would have a launch window sometime in 2011, but trusting any release estimate is like a noir character trusting a dame with silk stockings.<br />
<br />
Also, <em>World of Goo</em> is on sale <a href="http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Games/World-of-Goo/">this week</a> through the Marketplace for $4.99.<br />
<br />

The Games for Windows platform understands how mercurial our mood can be from day-to-day. Today, the storefront's offering the charming, friendly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/viva-pinata"><em>Viva Pi&ntilde;ata</em></a> for a dollar. According to <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-US/feeds/rss.xml">its RSS feed</a>, it's applying the same discount to the somewhat angrier, shootier <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/blacklight-tango-down">Blacklight: Tango Down</a> </em>tomorrow.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/04/viva-pinata-one-buck-on-games-for-windows-today-blacklight-tan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Viva Pinata one buck on Games for Windows today, Blacklight: Tango Down tomorrow</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/04/viva-pinata-one-buck-on-games-for-windows-today-blacklight-tan/">Viva Pinata one buck on Games for Windows today, Blacklight: Tango Down tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 04 Dec 2010 14:30:00 EST. It seems the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/games-for-windows">Games for Windows Marketplace</a> is trying its darndest to establish itself as <em>the</em> premiere source of awesome games that cost less than a 20 oz. bottle of soda. For example, today, you can pick up Warren Spector's epic FPSRPG <em>Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition</em> for just 99 American cents.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/02/deus-ex-game-of-the-year-just-99-cents-today-on-games-for-windo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deus Ex: Game of the Year just 99 cents today on Games For Windows</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/02/deus-ex-game-of-the-year-just-99-cents-today-on-games-for-windo/">Deus Ex: Game of the Year just 99 cents today on Games For Windows</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Dec 2010 14:04:00 EST. It's rare that we see games' price tags fall much lower than yesterday's $2 <em>BioShock</em> deal on Games for Windows. <em>And yet</em> -- today's GfW weekend sale completely blows yesterday's out of the water: For $0.10 (yes, <em>ten cents</em>), you can grab <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/age-of-empires-iii"><em>Age of Empires III: Complete Edition</em></a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/21/this-is-getting-silly-age-of-empires-iii-is-ten-cents-on-games/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>This is getting silly: Age of Empires III is ten cents on Games for Windows today</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/21/this-is-getting-silly-age-of-empires-iii-is-ten-cents-on-games/">This is getting silly: Age of Empires III is ten cents on Games for Windows today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 21 Nov 2010 11:30:00 EST. Just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/22/games-for-windows-marketplace-gets-competitive-relaunching-nov-15/ ">as planned</a>, the new browser-based Games for Windows Marketplace launched today. "Definitely you should show up on day one, because we're going to have a great pre-order on a title you may care about," product manager Peter Orullian teased several weeks ago. Well, we're not seeing "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/fable-3">it</a>" <em>aaand</em> ... there's not even <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/call-of-duty-black-ops"><em>Call of Duty: Black Ops</em></a> on offer (or even <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/modern-warfare-2">Modern Warfare 2</a></em> for that matter). A Steam-killer this not -- not yet, at least.<br />
<br />
What <a href="http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/">the Marketplace</a> does have going for it is a relatively user-friendly, if (for now) bare-bones interface, anchored by Live integration (squint and you'll see your faded-out, cross-platform Gamerscore in the upper right when you log in). Of course, Microsoft has stated its intent to vastly expand the site's catalog by offering plenty -- and there are <em>plenty</em> -- of PC games that are not Live-enabled. The new design also wisely highlights both the Deal of the Week (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/13/osmos-only-2-50-as-game-for-windows-lives-deal-of-the-week/"><em>Osmos</em> for $2.50</a>) and new "DailyDeal" (<em>GTA IV</em> for $12), which are going to be key aspects of the new Marketplace.<br />

Additionally, there's an option on the site to add Microsoft Points to your Gamertag (Windows Live ID) account, and, while not obvious until you proceed to "checkout," you can use points as a payment method to purchase Games for Windows content -- already a <em>dangerous</em> aspect of the new Marketplace.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/15/games-for-windows-marketplace-relaunches-right-on-time/">Games for Windows Marketplace relaunches right on time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 23:00:00 EST. In November, Microsoft will reboot its Games for Windows Marketplace. In doing so, the company aims to beef up its online portal with more games -- and not just those few that align themselves with the Games for Windows Live branding -- and provide a more competitive and comprehensive retail experience. Peter Orullian, who helped develop digital distribution strategies for Xbox Live, has been tapped to effectively manage the relaunch.<br />

When Games for Windows Live's Games on Demand service <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/15/psa-games-for-windows-lives-games-on-demand-launches/">launched in December</a> we said it was "marching onto the [PC digital distribution] field about an hour after the match ended." Three hours later (in metaphoric time), the service announced today it will offer day-and-date game releases from publishers 2K Games, Capcom, Microsoft Game Studios (what a coup!), Rockstar Games, THQ and Ubisoft. We can't help but imagine <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Steam/">Steam</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Impulse/">Impulse</a> and all the other digital distribution players at their post-game parties laughing.<br />
<br />
The initial day-and-date offering by the service is Ubisoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/18/review-prince-of-persia-the-forgotten-sands-xbox-360/"><em>Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands</em></a>. At the same time, the <em>Prince of Persia</em> games <em>The Sands of Time</em> and <em>Warrior Within</em> are each $2.50 -- which seem like much better deals than the aforementioned title. The service has also added several more games, which we've listed after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/08/gfw-on-demand-now-offers-day-and-date-releases/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GFW on Demand now offers day-and-date releases</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/08/gfw-on-demand-now-offers-day-and-date-releases/">GFW on Demand now offers day-and-date releases</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 19:10:00 EST. <br />
Through June 1, the PC version of Airtight Games' jetpack-packed action game is available for just $9.99 on <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-us/GAMES/Pages/darkvoid.aspx">Games for Windows Live</a>. A price like that skirts the boundaries between "rental" and "purchase" -- it's cheap enough that you can basically get it just to screw around with the jetpack and not feel bad. It's almost cheap enough that you can get it solely for the purpose of "completing your <em>Dark Void</em> collection" should you already have <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/07/dark-void-zero-landing-on-iphone-and-pc-april-12/">Dark Void Zero</a></em>.<br />

The expansive (and somewhat irreverent) "Metro Pack" DLC for the multiplayer portion of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bioshock-2"><em>BioShock 2</em></a> will be <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2010/05/23/bioshock-2-metro-pack-dlc-coming-tuesday-for-pc-owners/">available for the PC version</a> of the game tomorrow. The pack includes six new maps, three new Achievements and a "Rebirth" feature which lets level 50 players restart their careers, and will be available on the Games for Windows Live Marketplace for 800<span class="album_title"><img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /></span> ($10). Players can also grab two new multiplayer characters for 160<span class="album_title"><img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /></span> ($2), and <em>all</em> players can grab the (sigh) golf clubs-only "Kill'Em Kindly" deathmatch mode for free.<br />
<br />
Of course, this expansion caused a handful of game-crashing issues for folks who purchased it on 360 and PS3 two weeks ago. Not to worry -- a patch for the game is also set to go live tomorrow, which we hope will preempt these issues. <br />

Microsoft's experiment in casual game creation, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kodu"><em>Kodu</em></a>, is now available in preview form online. PC gamers can download the "Technical Preview" version of the game right <a href="http://fuse.microsoft.com/kodu/">here</a>, which features a revamped UI sporting mouse and keyboard controls. Microsoft also added other tweaks, enhancing the "move" verb (allowing for scripted camera movements), "streamlined terrain editing tools" and characters that can respond to mouse and keyboard events.<br />

The pricing structure for Microsoft's newly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/06/xbox-game-room-bringing-arcades-back-to-xbox-360-and-games-for-w/">announced</a> Avatar-occupied <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Game-Room/">Game Room</a> has been detailed in an online fact sheet, and we'd suggest you stock up on Microsoft funny money. Players have three options: 400<img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /> ($5) grants a dual-platform license for one game (for unlimited play on Xbox 360 <em>and </em>PC), 240<img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /> ($3) gets you the virtual arcade cabinet on one platform (Xbox 360 <em>or </em>PC), or, for the old-fashioned types, 40<img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /> ($0.50) is just "two quarters" worth of playtime on a select title -- for the <em>authentic</em> arcade experience, minus the sticky floors. Additionally, when visiting friends' game rooms, you can "try" their games before you pump in Microsoft Points of your own.<br />
<br />
The Game Room itself -- developed by third-party outfit <a href="http://www.kromestudios.com/">Krome Studios</a> (<em>Viva Pi&ntilde;ata: Party Animals, </em><em>Star Wars: Republic Heroes</em>) -- will be free for users to download. Customization options are mentioned in the fact sheet, but pricing for these features is not addressed. At launch the service will include 30 original arcade titles -- with "over 1000" planned for the future -- from multiple publishers, including Atari, Activision, Intellivision, and Konami. (A list of 31 confirmed titles is posted after the break.)<br />
<br />
Games will be presented in 1080p (because that's why you bought that HD set) and will support multiplayer for up to two players, as well as cross-platform leaderboards and Achievements. Microsoft's <em> </em><strike>Home</strike> <em>Game</em> Room is slated to launch this spring.<br />

Though the <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/10/22/first-microsoft-store-opens-grandly-with-giant-tv/">recently opened Microsoft Store</a> in Scottsdale, Arizona contains all the electronic doodads and software you'd expect to find in a Microsoft-branded retailer, there's one pleasant surprise waiting there for PC gaming enthusiasts. <a href="http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/2009/10/23/microsoft-retail-store-lets-you-print-your-own-physical-copies-of-pc-games/">That VideoGame Blog reports</a> that kiosks are distributed throughout the store which allow shoppers to order a Games for Windows title, leave their name with a customer service representative, then have the game, case, insert and other accouterments printed on the spot in under four minutes.<br />
<br />
We imagine the whole process is similar to the teddy synthesis featured in Build-a-Bear Workshops, only without all the haunting, ever-gurgling vats of stuffed animal guts featured prominently on the sales floor.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/23/microsoft-stores-printing-pc-games-on-location/">Microsoft Stores printing PC games on location</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST. You'd think that owning and operating the world's most ubiquitous operating system would make Microsoft popular with PC game publishers, that they'd be jumping at the chance to have the company's '<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/games-for-windows">Games for Windows</a>' nomenclature. For the software giant, this hasn't been the case so far, with major publishers like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ea">EA</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/valve">Valve</a> sticking with their own distribution services for PC gaming. Microsoft hopes to change that with its recent announcement of a streamlined approval process for GFW-labeled games, just in time for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/02/windows-7-goes-on-sale-october-22nd/">launch of Windows 7</a> -- the "<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/GFWCertification/EN/US/default.aspx">Games for Windows Self Certification Site</a>."<br /><br />By opening up a website that advertises the various marketing benefits of bringing titles to the GFW label, it appears that Microsoft is putting forth at least a minimal effort to keep its PC gaming business running. We've reached out to Microsoft for more information on the new self certification process and will update this post when we know more.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/09/17/games-for-windows-getting-revamp-ahead-of-windows-7-launch/">Big Download</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/17/games-for-windows-certification-streamlined-for-windows-7-launch/">Games for Windows certification streamlined for Windows 7 launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Sep 2009 21:30:00 EST. Do you like Games for Windows? Oh, you do? How about E3? Great! Now here's the rub: You can't have them together. According to our brothers from other mothers at <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/05/15/no-new-games-for-windows-live-announcements-at-e3-2009/">Big Download</a>, the GFW announcements at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2009">E3 2009</a> are going to be, well, <em>non-existent</em>. A Microsoft PR rep said that the company doesn't feel as though the game is aimed at PC gamers, but rather console-focused. <br /><br />And while Microsoft plans on holding a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/windows-7">Windows 7</a> reception at E3 where a variety of PC games will be demoed using the new operating system, the press conference set to "completely transform how people think about home entertainment" (does that mean we'll pay someone else to think about it for us?) won't feature any new GFW newsplosions.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/15/e3-games-for-windows-live-announcements-not-so-much/">E3 Games for Windows Live announcements? Microsoft has revealed new plans for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Games-for-Windows-Live/">Games for Windows Live</a> platform, focusing on copy protection and downloadable content, according to <a href="http://www.developmag.com/news/31540/Games-for-Windows-Live-looks-to-dodge-piracy-drive-DLC">Develop</a>. The features built into a new GFW update will help game companies prevent game piracy before a product's street date with server-side authentication -- including "authentication for online play".<br /><br />GFW users will also be able to save general settings to an account, which can be carried over to games played on any "compatible and connected Windows PC," which sounds similar to the Xbox 360 General Settings feature, sans the cloud preferences are saved on.<br /><br />Microsoft also plans to encourage downloadable content by simplifying the process. Using new <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/API">APIs</a>, developers will be able to create in-game store fronts to make DLC access a streamlined process for customers while "providing developers and publishers with new revenue streams."<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Microsoft/">Microsoft</a> promises that the GFW team is hard at work on "several projects" tied directly to the Live platform and hope to build "new developer relationships" to get the most out of the platform. It seems Games for Windows Live is slowly creeping up to the functionality of the Xbox 360 Live platform. We're finally here! Quick, someone check the temperature in Hell.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/25/games-for-windows-update-to-address-piracy-dlc/">Games for Windows update to address piracy, DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Mar 2009 00:05:00 EST. Bethesda just made the release date of <em>Fallout 3</em>'s second DLC pack, "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-pitt/">The Pitt</a>," officially official: Tuesday, March 24. Like last month's "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/operation-anchorage/">Operation: Anchorage</a>," the upcoming DLC will come in at 800<img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /> ($10) on Xbox 360 and Games for Windows Live simultaneously. Also, Pete Hines from Bethesda confirmed that the <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/fallout-3-patched-in-preparation-for-the-pitt/">recently released patch</a> for the game "is specific to DLC and is required to play The Pitt. It doesn't address anything with the base game outside of that."<br /><br />In tandem with the confirmed release date, Bethesda also dropped a trio of new screens that you can check out below in our gallery.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fallout-3-the-pitt-1/">Fallout 3: The Pitt</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fallout-3-the-pitt-1/#1373041"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/autoaxe_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fallout-3-the-pitt-1/#1373042"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/steelyard_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fallout-3-the-pitt-1/#1373043"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/welcome_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fallout-3-the-pitt-1/#1410732"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/chained_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fallout-3-the-pitt-1/#1410733"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/dude_spikes_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/fallout-3s-the-pitt-officially-dated-new-screens/">Fallout 3's 'The Pitt' dated March 24, new screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Mar 2009 12:55:00 EST. Those of you who prefer to play <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fallout-3"><em>Fallout 3</em></a> on the PC and have yet to download <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/joystiq-review-fallout-3s-operation-anchorage-dlc/"><em>Operation: Anchorage</em></a> DLC should take note of some reported issues. Forum users at the official Games for Windows site are <a href="http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/1886.aspx">reporting</a> that the game fails to recognize the DLC in some instances. According to a GFW forum mod, it takes a couple of minutes to validate the DLC (see: boot up your game, go into the Wastelands, wait), but some users are still having problems accessing the content.<br /><br />It's unclear whether <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/what-to-expect-from-the-games-for-windows-live-marketplace/">the updated GFW Live interface</a> plays a role or if it's just an isolated DLC bug, but we hope that Bethesda and Microsoft step in and clear this up soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/02/pc-gamers-report-operation-anchorage-issues/">PC gamers report Operation: Anchorage issues</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Feb 2009 14:57:00 EST. Congratulations, Ron Pessner! You've been chosen by Microsoft to head up the Games For Windows Live division and step into the shoes of one <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/26/games-for-windows-live-boss-among-microsoft-layoffs/">Chris Early</a>, who recently became the victim of our terrible "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/26/games-for-windows-live-boss-among-microsoft-layoffs/">layoffs</a>" tag. It says here you've come from the Entertainment and Devices division, and will be joined by Microsoft Games Studios' Dave Luehmann, who will oversee development and publishing for Windows games.<br /><br />That's right, Ron, they have games on Windows now. To be fair, you undoubtedly boast a keen awareness of the matter, as Microsoft claims to be pursuing success for its PC gaming platform with renewed vigor. According to a statement published on <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=22043">Gamasutra</a>, the company hopes to further "invest in Windows as a first-class gaming platform through great Windows out of box experiences," not to mention a variety of online services like LIVE and MSN games.<br /><br />And hey, you're taking over at a point where Games for Windows Live is free. That has to be easier compared to the last guy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/27/microsoft-appoints-new-games-for-windows-boss/">Microsoft appoints new Games for Windows boss</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 17:30:00 EST. While Microsoft has yet to make a formal announcement, <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2009/01/24/microsofts-chris-early-head-of-games-for-windows-live-among-the-layoffs/">VentureBeat</a>'s Dean Takahashi reports that emails to Early have bounced, and surmises that "more well-known managers will exit now there are fewer people to manage."<br /><br />The former exec was first put in charge of GFWL in July 2007, and had been an evangelist for the platform since the early days of Live Anywhere. Takahashi ponders if this might signal the beginning of the end for service altogether, which despite a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/games-for-windows-live-redesigned-screenshots-details/">recent revamp</a> has struggled to find acceptance. We wish Early the best of luck as we turn our heads skyward and wonder aloud if anyone in this economy is truly safe.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/26/games-for-windows-live-boss-among-microsoft-layoffs/">Games for Windows Live boss among Microsoft layoffs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 09:30:00 EST. Relic Entertainment's Mark Noseworthy has confirmed with Joystiq that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dawn-of-war-2"><em>Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2</em></a> closed beta will begin January 21st <em>if</em> you purchased the original <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dawn-of-war/">Dawn of War</a> </em>expansion, <em>Soulstorm. </em>Procrastinators, take note: you'll be introduced into the public beta just a week later on January 28th. Or, break the cycle of lethargy and pick up the expansion in order to grab an early beta spot.<br /><br />We got <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/12/joystiq-hands-on-dawn-of-war-2/">a closer look</a> at <em>Dawn of War 2</em> during CES, and fans of real-time strategy games will not be disappointed ... unless you don't own a PC (but c'mon, how could you be an RTS buff without owning a PC?). <em>Dawn of War 2</em> will be a PC-only release with Games for Windows Live features like voice chat and Achievements.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/12/warhammer-40-000-dawn-of-war-2-beta-on-jan-21/">Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 beta on Jan. 21</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Jan 2009 16:44:00 EST. "The Network is the Computer" - John Gage, Sun Microsystems, 1984 <br /><br />When John Gage said this in 1984 it was a fairly controversial statement. Computers were getting smarter and more powerful and seemed to be moving away from the DUMB terminals of the past to more application-oriented, personal computing. At the time, most people probably weren't considering that an incredibly powerful, pervasive, interconnected web of servers and computers allowing for petabytes of data all over the world to be stored, accessed, manipulated and interacted with, would be used by more than 20% of the world's population, and nearly 75% of the US population. Looking at where we are today, his words seem fairly prescient. Not that the technology and power in computers hasn't also been improving at an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law">astonishing rate</a>, but there's certainly been a shift in how people use computers as internet penetration has increased. After all, would things like the iPhone or EeePC or Mini 12s or email terminals really serve much of a purpose if not for their ability to connect to a network? <br /><br />So, what does this really have to do with gaming? Well, there's certainly been some interest in creating web games, ranging from incredibly simple but fun diversions like <em><a href="http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/Game.asp">Desktop Tower Defense</a></em>, to more complex first-person shooters like <em><a href="http://www.instantaction.com/">Fallen Empire: Legions</a></em> or the <em>Quake 3: Arena</em> remake, <em><a href="http://www.quakelive.com/">Quake Live</a></em>. But this is really just the start. <br /><br />Recently, people have been mostly puzzled as to why Microsoft would continue to try and keep "Games for Windows Live" alive when it was so unpopular when it launched. Indeed, people were not very interested in paying for services that they were already used to getting for free. A few months ago, Microsoft had to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/22/games-for-windows-live-now-free/">scrap the idea</a> of making people pay for the service and now, more recently, it has launched a new client for it. Judging from the response, it doesn't seem like most people care about the service. What's Microsoft thinking here?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/counting-rupees-the-network-is-the-platform/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Counting Rupees: The Network is the Platform</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/counting-rupees-the-network-is-the-platform/">Counting Rupees: The Network is the Platform</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 18:00:00 EST. One part of the new (Improved? You decide.) Games for Windows Live is, well, live. That would be the in-game interface <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/games-for-windows-live-redesigned-screenshots-details/">we covered yesterday</a>. It's fast, functional, and even swaps Windows UI elements out for 360 controller button icons when you connect a 360 controller to your PC (a nice touch).<br /><br />The next element of the GFWL reset is due next month: the Marketplace. We got to go hands-on with this standalone app and ... it's very much what you would expect. The Marketplace app will become available once the first GFWL DLC rolls out; load up a GFWL game and it will auto-download. Similarly, GFWL games will check upon starting up if there are any title updates - just like 360 games - and download / install them with no muss, no fuss.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/what-to-expect-from-the-games-for-windows-live-marketplace/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>What to expect from the Games for Windows Live Marketplace</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/what-to-expect-from-the-games-for-windows-live-marketplace/">What to expect from the Games for Windows Live Marketplace</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 21:00:00 EST. <br />With little (no?) fanfare, Microsoft has rolled out an update to its also-ran Games for Windows Live service, ready to shed some of that bad name just in time for this holiday's GFW-branded lineup (think <span style="font-style: italic;">Fallout 3</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">GTA IV</span>). So what's in store for you, PC gamers? Mostly, a much needed UI refresh. Gone is the ill-advised, console-inspired Blades interface - in its stead is a much slicker (much quicker!) menu that pops down from the top of the display. All the features you'd expect to be there are there: gamertag, friends list, messaging, achievements. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/microsoft-makes-games-for-windows-live-free-for-all/">As announced earlier this year</a>, they've also done away with the tiered subscription service for PC gamers. No more "Gold" service - all of this is free, including TrueSkill matchmaking.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/games-for-windows-live-new/">Games for Windows Live</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/games-for-windows-live-new/#1154889"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/gfw-live-gamercard-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/games-for-windows-live-new/#1154881"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/gfw-live-friend-profile-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/games-for-windows-live-new/#1154880"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/gfw-live-settings_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/games-for-windows-live-new/#1154879"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/gfw-live-messages_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/games-for-windows-live-new/#1154878"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/gfw-live-message-to-friend_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />Indeed, there isn't much new in the way of functionality with one notable exception: the Marketplace. Though it's not available just yet (we'll let you know when "in the next few weeks"), the standalone Marketplace app will be akin to its 360 counterpart, offering publishers and developers a place to host trailers, demos, and DLC - all integrated into the game. Available now: the ability for a game to alert you to patches, and then download them and seamlessly patch them into your game. Boot it up again and - voila! - you're running the latest release. No messy files to download or delete.<br /><br />We'll have our writeup of the latest installment in the GFW Live saga tomorrow; however, for now, flip through some of these screenshots from yesteryear to see what's changed. If you've taken it for a spin, let us know what you think. Oh, hell with it: you'll let us know what you think regardless! (Full presser after the break).<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/games-for-windows-live/">Games for Windows Live (old)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/games-for-windows-live/#184287"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/03/g4w-live-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/games-for-windows-live/#184290"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/03/g4w-live-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/games-for-windows-live/#184288"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/03/g4w-live-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/games-for-windows-live/#184289"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/03/g4w-live-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/games-for-windows-live-redesigned-screenshots-details/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Games for Windows Live redesigned - screenshots, details</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/games-for-windows-live-redesigned-screenshots-details/">Games for Windows Live redesigned - screenshots, details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 20:06:00 EST. Rockstar has confirmed the delay of the PC release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/GTAIV/"><em>Grand Theft Auto IV</em></a>, reflected on retailers' sites <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/retail-listings-indicate-grand-theft-auto-iv-pc-delay/">earlier this week</a>. The game has been pushed from November 18th to December 2nd. The developer did not cite particular reasons for the hold up, reports <a href="http://pc.ign.com/articles/925/925515p1.html">IGN</a>, but we can assume it's due in part to typical, last minute bug squashing and system optimization. On that note, Rockstar did finally release official system specs:<br /><u><br />Minimum System Requirements </u><br />
