Microsoft confirmed during its pre-Tokyo Game Show 2008 press conference that Namco Bandai's Tekken franchise will appear on Xbox 360. Tekken 6 will, according to Microsoft, appear on the console in "fall 2009." The sixth installment in the series - which has been a PlayStation mainstay since the original launched in 1995 - was expected to continue console exclusivity on PS3. It will, instead, ship for both consoles simultaneously.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Klonoa Wiimake dreaming of Japan this December

Namco's not-quite 3D platforming mascot, Klonoa, will soon waggle his way onto the Wii by way of a remake of his first PlayStation adventure, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile. According to 1UP, the Wiimake will boast a "hefty graphical enhancement" over the original, while IGN adds that the title will also be getting difficulty tweaks as well.

Currently no US release has been announced, though our friends in Japan can look forward to controlling the 'Dream Traveler' on December 4 using just the Wii remote and two buttons as he ... wait, what is this game about again? Honestly it's been a decade since we played the thing. You could probably just tell us it's a racing title starring anthropomorphic vegetables and we'd be just as inclined to nod along and smile.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

We Cheer track list revealed, features 30 'high energy' songs

Ready, ok! Hey, you waggle fans! Stand right up and clap your hands! Namco Bandai has sent along, the complete list of We Cheer songs!

There, that can get us motivated to talk about anything. According to Namco, the over-cute cheer squad you see above will jump and shout to the tune of 30 "high-energy master tracks," including artists such as Boys Like Girls and Paramore, as you wave one or both Wii remotes through the air like "virtual pom-poms." Feel free to check out the game's entire 30 song catalog after the break as you wait for We Cheer to energize retail shelves with pep on September 30. And if this set list doesn't work for you, just remember to be aggressive. Be be aggressive.

Namco Bandai's ridiculously cross-branded Soul Calibur IV has cut a deep swath into retail shelves worldwide, shipping not one million units but two since its July 29 debut.

Still, and not to make an example out of you, Namco, but really all of this chest puffery over units shipped is a bit overblown. It's like bragging about how many pencils you threw at the ceiling, rather than what's really important, namely how many stuck. Then again, we imagine it's difficult to look up and count while you're ducking under the desk from falling profits.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Namco Bandai profits take a dip in Q109

It's time for Namco Bandai to bring out the katamari and roll up some loose change, as profits dipped 63% from the same quarter last year. GI.biz reports the company went from making $26 million in profit during Q108 to making only $9.2 million in Q109. The video game section of the company was the only division to see growth at 3.8% this quarter.

Much of Namco's sales this period came from Europe and Asia, with Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 selling 420,000 units in the former territory. Japan brought sales with Taiko Drum Master and Tales of Symphonia at 260,000 and 215,000 units, respectively. The company expects sales to pick up over the year, but has already forecast a 31% drop in profits for the full year. Hey, at least they're just making less profit and not sending cash into the ether like Midway.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mario and more re-created in Soul Calibur IV

Filed under: Culture, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Fighting

The creativity and ingenuity of gamers is not to be questioned. Case in point: the avalanche of (mostly) excellent classic characters re-created in Soul Calibur IV. We've already covered <strike>a few</strike> 24 of them, but this latest batch warrants a look as well. After all, it will at least give you a kicking-off point for making your own versions of Mario and Lugi, along with Cammy (Street Fighter), The Bride (Kill Bill), Gundam (er, Gundam), and more. While you're at it, we're sure our podcast crew would love to see themselves in SCIV form. (hint-hint)

Tales fans likely don't need extra incentive to secure a pre-order for Tales of Vesperia; the only question that remains is if they're happy with the regular version or want to pony up the extra gald for something shinier. Besides being wrapped in metal and artwork by series character designer Kosuke Fujishima, the $69.99 Tales of Vesperia special edition will also include a soundtrack CD celebrating a decade of console role-playing.

While specifics haven't been revealed, Namco Bandai notes that of the 25 songs included on the disc, a hefty 14 will be pulled from Vesperia, with the remainder coming from Tales of Symphonia (4), Tales of the Abyss (3), Tales of Phantasia (2) and Tales of Destiny (2). However, as much as we enjoy our ears, this limited offering is a step back from the Big Daddies and cat helmets we're used to, though we doubt that will stop fans from switching their pre-orders over in the run up to the game's August 26 release.

What's wrong with this picture? It directly contradicts what Soul Calibur IV director Katsutoshi Sasaki said in a recent interview, that's what. Specifically, Sasaki responded "we don't have any plans for that" when asked by XCN if we'd ever see both characters from a galaxy far, far away battling each other on the same console.

You can't get much more official than the game's director, but his comments don't explain screenshots (such as the one above) and video that have appeared on the net clearly (and seemingly authentically) showing both Yoda and Vader in the same version of SCIV. We can't help but think Sasaki is practicing his Jedi mind tricks on us with this one.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Video: 24 custom Soul Calibur IV characters

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Fighting, Video

What if an army of large-breasted female warriors, Darth Vader, and Yoda still weren't enough to satisfy your most illicit fanboy fantasies? Mathematically speaking, that puts you in a very small percentile but, never one to back down from a challenge, Namco has included a character creation tool in Soul Calibur IV to fill in whatever gaps you may feel are inexcusable.

For inspiration, we've got this video from CanoodleStrudel, showing off 24 different handmade fighters. There's a heavy focus on characters from Japanese games - Onimusha, Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy VII - but there's also some Western treats, like Arthas from the Warcraft universe and the Prince (of Persia), light and dark versions. But it's not all video game characters, we've also got Leonidas from 300 and Bruce Lee from ... real life.

So are there technically 24 characters? Sure, but only if you consider armor changes to be unique characters ... and yes, we're including Dante and Nero in the "armor change" category. We wonder how long internet memesters can resist from crafting a Pirate versus Ninja battle ... or a Chuck Norris versus Jack Bauer showdown ...

[Thanks, Tim]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Japanese Home beta opens, adds Namco classics

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Online

Sony has begun accepting applications for the next beta phase of Home ... in Japan. PS3 users can put their names in the hat (from which 10,000 will be chosen) directly from a new option in the Japanese PlayStation Store. Successful applicants will be notified via email before the beta officially kicks off at the end of August.

In related news, classic arcade games from Namco are showing up as virtual coin-ops in the Japanese Home client. Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Galaga, and Xevious have been rolled out so far, with three "secret" titles still on the way. It's interesting to note that Home users - at least in the beta - can play these games for free, whereas they are paid downloads on Xbox Live Arcade. We'll have to wait and see if this holds true for Home games from Namco and other publishers in the open beta (which is supposed to hit by year's end).

Source - Engadget
Source - Siliconera

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Check out the star-studded Afro Samurai trailer

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360

There are three things in this world for which we possess an unbridled, white-hot love: The warriors of feudal Japan, outrageously large disco hairstyles, and Samuel L. As you can imagine, we've been fans of Afro Samurai since it made its American debut on SpikeTV in 2007 -- though we've been somewhat apprehensive towards the Namco brawler based on the stylish mini-series, which we got our first look at during last year's VGAs. However, the trailer posted above hits all the right notes -- amazing voice actors, attractive visuals, wicked acrobatic maneuvers, and a soundtrack by the Wu Tang Clan's RZA. With this latest trailer, and our brief time with the game at E3, we feel comfortable giving Afro Samurai the Joystiq Seal of Certified Freshness.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Soul Calibur IV demo coming 'down the road'

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Fighting, E3

Fighting fans hoping for a pre-launch lightsaber throw down will wait until Soul Calibur IV cuts into retail shelves later this month, as Namco Bandai informs us that a demo for the game won't be available until after the game is released.

According to reps manning the company's E3 room, the devs are currently putting all of their effort towards getting the game ready for its release for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on July 29. As for what and when exactly we can expect from the demo when it's finally released, Namco Bandai wouldn't say, teasing only that it'll be available sometime "down the road."

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Eternal Sonata PS3 US-bound by Fall

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, RPGs, E3, Galleries

After a long bout of denial, Namco finally confesses to an English language version of Eternal Sonata for the PS3. Formerly an Xbox 360 exclusive, the PS3 version will include brand-new content such as new cut scenes and characters.

Playable characters include Serenade and Crescendo, and players can now customize the look of members of their party with a variety of new outfits. New dungeons and different endings should add some flair to a tried-and-tested J-RPG. Eternal Sonata is set for a Fall release for North America.

When Soul Calibur's cadre of fighters cut their way onto the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this July in North America, they will do so in pairs. The latest issue of Famitsu reveals that the game will feature tag team elements in order to "perform combos" based on an on-screen meter that depletes as characters continue to test the bonds of friendship.

However, according to crack CAG translators, it remains unknown to what extent "character swapping" will be featured in Soul Calibur IV. The article interestingly only mentions the mechanic in reference to the game's single player mode, and that "teammates may suddenly join and leave at the end of the battle." We can't imagine that Namco Bandai would be so shortsighted as to leave something like this out of the game's versus mode. Still, we imagine that just the idea of Darth Vader conquering the galaxy shoulder to shoulder with top-heavy Taki (or Ivy, or Cassandra, or...) is enough to get fan fiction writers reaching for the keyboard and a change of pants.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Namco's Ace Combat team bringing 'Sky Crawlers' to Wii

Filed under: Nintendo Wii, Action, Simulations

According to Game|Life and Dengeki Online, Namco Bandai is bringing Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii's latest film, "The Sky Crawlers," to the Wii in the form of a flight combat sim. The genre (not to mention Namco's Ace Combat team) makes for a perfect fit given the movie's focus on a group of fighter pilots, albeit in an alternate setting.

Though it won't be measured in Japan until fall, the success of Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces will likely hinge on how well the controls are implemented -- the Wiimote functions as the throttle and the nunchuck acts as the control stick -- and how popular the film ends up being. At least the game will let us skip all the existential chatter, right?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Soul Calibur IV gameplay video dump

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Fighting

In addition to yesterday's cinematic trailer, which gave us a fantastic look at the game's three combatants from a galaxy far, far away, a plethora of gameplay videos for Soul Calibur IV also recently made their way into GameTrailer's expansive archives. Videogaming 247 says it's been told by Namco Bandai US that Eternal Sonata on PS3 won't be leaving Japan. A spokesperson for the publisher tells the site that the game has only been announced for Japan and it has "no plans to release the game on the PS3 in the US at this moment." Of course, in the never-ending battle with PR semantics, "at this moment" could mean the game will eventually be announced for other territories.

Eternal Sonata's official Japan-only PS3 status might explain some of the strange things that happened late last year when the game was announced for the PS3 on the ESRB site (pictured above) and on Namco's own US site, only to be removed sometime later.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

USK lists 'Galaga Legions' for Xbox 360

Filed under: Arcade, Retro, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

If you're like us, the arcade shooter Galaga is probably sitting on your Xbox 360's hard drive gathering virtual dust. Even so, that doesn't mean Namco-Bandai won't jump at the chance to try squeeze a few more Microsoft Points out of the old girl. Now, according to a posting by the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbskontrolle (USK), the German version of the ESRB, it looks like the publisher could be doing just that with a new title called Galaga Legions.

We know next to nothing about the game beyond the fact that it's a shooter, but that hasn't stopped speculation that Namco-Bandai, the publisher behind cherished arcade re-imagining Pac-Man: CE, could be giving the same treatment to another classic quarter muncher. The notion makes us giddy -- our hard drives can always use more quality games. "Hello, you've reached the Namco Bandai slash Bandai Namco offices. How can I help you?"

"Hi, we'd like to speak to the Soul Calibur IV designer, please."

"Is this Joystiq? Again?"

"No. Yes. Sorry."

"I told you to stop phoning. We are never, never, ever going to put Snuffleupagus into the game."

"Not even as DLC?"

"Sir, do you have a legitimate request for him? He's quite busy with intensive mammary modeling."

"Just one: Tell him it would rock if he would introduce Yoshi to Sue in the game."

"Alright, by 'legitimate,' I meant something that would actually make sense."

"TALIM it would ROCK if he could have YOSHI MEET SUE. In Soul Calibur IV."

"Who are Yoshi and Sue?"

"No no, Yoshimitsu. It's sort of a pun, you see. There's also --"

"Let me stop you there, sir. Was there something, perhaps an unexplained supernatural force or the imminent threat of death, that prevented you from asking the question like a normal human being?"

"Oh, come on! Humor is Taki that opens the door to a healthy relationship. Yoda last one I should have to explain this to and ... what was that clicking sound? Hello? Are you still there?"

[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
