Sega announced that it will bring Phantasy Star Portable, the on-the-go flavor of its popular Phantasy Star Universe, to North America in March 2009, finally giving us a reason to cash in those meseta savings bonds grandma left behind before taking off for Palma to retire.

Serving as a kind of prequel to its console cousin, the game will bring a new character to the series, alongside 150 new weapons and items and support for wireless co-op play. Phantasy Star Portable's release in Japan earlier this year was met with rabid sales, and it will be interesting to see if players over here will be just as eager to level up to Sega's latest role-playing offering.
Phantasy Star Portable coming stateside in March originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 22:30:00 EST. It's true that Phantasy Star of today is hardly recognizable to those who grew up playing with talking cats, but that probably doesn't keep Sega awake at night, especially given reports that its PSP RPG Phantasy Star Portable has been difficult to keep in stock since it was released in Japan last week.

The pint-sized version of Phantasy Star Universe has shown Monster Hunter-like momentum, apparently flying off Japanese store shelves, with both Wired and AkibaBlog reporting that 90% of the original shipment went out the door on July 31, the first day it went on sale. There remains no word as to when or if Sega will bring Phantasy Star Portable to PSP owners outside of Japan, but we'll continue to save our meseta 'til it happens.
Phantasy Star Portable sells like a Monster in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Aug 2008 15:58:00 EST. What's your favorite franchise on Nintendo consoles? You've got your Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, obviously, but there's also Sonic, Resident Evil, Mega Man, Street Fighter, and years and years of other series throughout history. And don't forget about the comparatively newer series like Super Monkey Ball and Phantasy Star Online!

As for us, it's definitely Castlevania. We have been faithful to Konami's pseudo-horror series since the very start.
Wii Warm Up: Favorite franchise? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Aug 2007 09:00:00 EST. The gadget is plugged in between the controller and console -- available for PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 -- and the player can use an analog stick to kind of jab in the text. (Note: Xbox 360 owners must have a wired controller to use this.)

Looking at the layout of the characters, pictured, gives us the impression that we wouldn't be so accurate with it. According to Sega's website, gadget can be used with any game that accepts a USB keyboard.

Someone will find this very convenient, to be sure, but considering the price -- $35 for PS2, $40 for Xbox 360 -- we have a hard time justifying this except for PSU enthusiasts who want the packaged "swag aplenty" and free t-shirt. We're eschewing the learning curve for this device and buying a USB keyboard and/or saving up for the Xbox 360 chatpad.

[Thanks, Brett]
Sega releases Phantasy Star-branded texting gadget for PS2, Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 May 2007 21:50:00 EST. You may have seen shots of the Blue Orb Texter device on Joystiq last year. Essentially, you plug your wired control into the Texter, plug the Texter into your Xbox 360, and your controller becomes a text input device ... of sorts. Applying colored labels to your controller, you input combinations of stick presses to produce different letters. If the charts above are any indication, it is exactly as difficult as it sounds. SEGA has taken it upon themselves to create a Phantasy Star Universe branded version of the device. It's the same device, although it has a spiffier label and comes with lots of PSU-related stickers and a code to redeem a free T-shirt. Though it is intended for use in PSU, it will work in any 360 interface that accepts USB keyboard inputs. Given that the 360 Chatpad will give players the same functionality with a simpler interface, we have to ask: why?

If this question does not vex you as it does us, you may purchase the Texter for $39.95. Hit the "read" link to see a video of the Texter in action.
New texting device for Phantasy Star. Of course, that fact is offset by the addition of monthly fees, which send many gamers running for the hills. If you've been wanting to try PSU but were scared off by monthly charges, then we may have a deal for you. Amazon is currently selling the game for the rock-bottom price of $9.99. Heck, at that price, you could buy the game and play it for 5 months before you exceeded the average price of a 360 game. Not a bad deal if you're looking for some Rappy-slaying action.

Of course, the game does have a single player mode as well, so it's quite a bit of gaming for not a lot of scratch.

Any takers?

[Via Xbox 360 Rally]
Want Phantasy Star? But, as with the other PSU offerings, it'll cost you $9.99 per month to play on Xbox Live which you already pay for. Actually, this kind of irks us a little, paying to play on an already paid for online service. Heck, they could at least discount the monthly fee for gold Xbox Live members and keep the $9.99 price tag for silver. Stupid monthly fees ... we'll exterminate you one day.
PSU: AotI expansion to be download only originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 15:00:00 EST. We've been hearing some details on it for a few months, now Sega has finally gotten around to announcing Phantasy Star Universe expansion Ambition of the Illuminus, and all we can say is wow ... that's really an impressive title. We're not all PSU fans here at Joystiq HQ, so the new missions, cities and enemies don't do a whole lot for most of us. But when we see a title like that, we sit up and take notice.

That's not to say it doesn't seem like there's a lot of new stuff here for fans. You've got some new classes, as well as new weapon types like the Madoog, Shadoog and Whip. The expansion also adds new Photon Arts, which still sound suspiciously like the title of a Journey album. Speaking of titles: ... Ambition of the Illuminus ... yep, still awesome. There are also new facial features, hair styles and body types for your character, which is a good thing; if you're going to be playing a game with a title like that, you need to be looking fine. Those playing on Xbox 360 download the new stuff this fall, those on PC and PS2 will have to buy a standalone disc. We don't know how much any of that will cost, but what wouldn't you pay to be able to say aloud that you're playing Ambition of the Illuminus? Can you really put a price on that?
Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus coming this fall originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 08:40:00 EST.
As the sequel to last years online RPG, Sega appears to be tweaking it to address the number one complaint amongst those who played the original PSU. Namely, it wasn't as good as Phantasy Star Online.

While it won't bring back the gameplay of the original, Ambition of Illuminus will be adding new weapons and clothing that bring back the style of Phantasy Star Online. Entirely new weapon types will be joining the mix including photon whips and slicers, new stages and even a casino, run by the penguin-esque rappies.

Now you Phantasy Star addicts can do your gambling and turn tricks all in the same place!
Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of Illuminus details originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Mar 2007 03:05:00 EST. Feel free to check in, and comment, every week.

Phantasy Star Universe
The Phantasy Star Online series has reached almost every platform imaginable: the PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, Dreamcast and even the Gamecube. While Nintendo stayed away from online support for the GC, Sega dove head-in, even going so far as to make an Episode III exclusively for that platform. With that in mind, a PSP version of this revered franchise doesn't sound any more crazy than Sega's previous efforts.

Why PSP?
The PSP needs a strong online RPG, and PSO and PSU may fit the bill. Portable gamers need something that they'll be able to play offline and on, and that's always been one of the series' highpoints: the flexibility it gives the player. Something as comprehensive as World of Warcraft is most likely not technically possible, nor fun, for handheld play. But the accessibility of PSO and PSU should work on the go.

Is it possible?
Considering how most publishers shy away from Infrastructure support, we may never see an online RPG on our system. Couple that with extensive homebrew use, and publishers may see the PSP too risky: how can they be sure that people are paying their monthly fees and aren't cheating? It won't be worth their effort, but we'd like to see Sega or Sony at least try once.
Dream Games: Phantasy Star Universe originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Feb 2007 17:20:00 EST. Whether you're still wondering if Rolf and his team died or lived in the end of Phantasy Star II (I say they lived... I mean, Rune did say in PSIV that the first generation Lutz came and stored the Aero-Prism on Motavia), or if Sega will ever release another turn-based Phantasy Star title (Skies of Arcadia was rumored to be one... alas, it was not so), you know you're enjoying Phantasy Star Universe. At long last, I'm online with it.

That brings me to the point of this article. A few people did show interest in a sort of playing group for PS3 (how this would work, I am unsure as I don't have a freakin' PS3) online, so I'm extending that offer to Phantasy Star Universe. Here's what's happening today. I'm going to leave one of my characters, Rune Walsh, sitting in front of the fountain at the central table of the GUARDIANS Colony, in Universe 10, from 4PM-5PM Eastern Standard Time today and tomorrow (same time tomorrow). I'm going out to buy a keyboard today, since I'm running on the PS2. That way I can communicate better in the game. You can do a number of things should you choose to locate me:

Leave me your partner card

Send me a simple mail

...Blacklist me

Sit down and chill with my new character until I get back from my errands (going out to buy some groceries and such)

Leave a comment here about your character and if you'd like to meet at a better time

Regrettably, I'm about 98% certain that the 360 servers are independant from the PS2 and PC servers, so I can't play with the 360 fanboys. That sucks, since that might be where the majority of gamers are for this. Anyway, it's up to you if you want to party with fellow PS3Fanboy readers -- I think it would take our community to a level not often found on websites. I mean, do you ever play online with GameSpot, or IGN workers? Hmmm.
Play Phantasy Star Universe with PS3Fanboys! originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Nov 2006 15:00:00 EST. Sega Sammy (more commonly known as just Sega) announced a 52% increase in profits of $322 million for the first six months of the year, compared to $211 million last year. Before gamers stop and cheer, the profits aren't helped any by the actual video game division.

Sega Sammy's game division was hampered by R&D costs resulting in a $57 million loss despite an increase in software sales. The full year forecast is also lower due to problems with the company's pachinko division. This just goes to show you how minimally actual video games impact the company.

Video games only make up 14% of Sega Sammy's $2.4 billion in sales. Since they're pulling a loss, holding onto the game division may start looking like a bad idea. Will Sega be able to make a transition into the next-generation era, or will they start feeling the pressure? No other company is showing similar financial difficulties moving into 360 and PS3 development. No company can last forever, but let's hope Sega manages to stay in the game a bit longer ... we still have a soft spot for the Dreamcast.

Sega Sammy shows increased profits ... without games originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 11 Nov 2006 15:00:00 EST. Now you have three more days to die and watch your unhelpful teammates hump your corpse. Assuming you can actually connect anyway. Just to be sure, we connected earlier and the beta is definitely still working.

Some of you may remember that the beta was cut short thanks to a delay and yesterday's Live outage. It's nice to see that SEGA is willing to extend the beta in light of these issues. CVG lists the 360 version for November 10th, well before any other version (the PS3 version is set for March 07). Curiously absent from Activision's announcement is the date for the Xbox version. CVG speculates that this could mean the Xbox version has been canceled. It seems doubtful, but COD2 is the 360's first million seller. Maybe Activision and Mircrosoft are hoping COD3 will drive sales of the 360. Regardless, 360 owners will be the first to play.

We can't help but note that it's going to be impossible to sample all the 360 goodness this holiday. Gears of War, Phantasy Star, Splinter Cell, Viva Piñata, R6 Vegas, the list just keeps going. After a 954 MB download, we were treated to failed connection messages over and over for upwards of an hour. A quick glance at the PSU beta forum suggests that this problem is rather widespread.

The amount of time the PSU beta would be available has been constantly diminishing, marred by a series of problems. Let's recap:

The beta is announced as being up for download Oct 11 and 12 and then open to play until October 18. That gives us at most an entire week of gaming.

Near the eleventh hour, Sega announced that the download would be delayed, but promised within a few days. The download then comes available this weekend, but still only lasts until October 18. Two less days to enjoy PSU.

Xbox Live announces that they will be down for maintenance October 17th for up to 24 hours. That's another day we can scratch off.

Server issues plague the PSU beta. Time to find another way to spend the weekend.

We're hoping Sega gets the issue straight soon. Even if the beta turns out to be a bust, internet troubles now are a bad sign for the official Phantasy Star Universe release, which is just 10 days away. Any Joystiq readers had any luck with the beta?

Continue reading for our entire PSU experience thus far, summed up in two screenshots.
Continue reading Phantasy Star's universal issues

Phantasy Star's universal issues originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 14 Oct 2006 17:19:00 EST. The download will be available for only two days, so keep an eye out if you're interested. The open beta was originally set to begin yesterday, with the download available October 11 and 12, and was also set to end October 18.

Phantasy Star Universe will arrive October 24 for PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox 360. Online play will require a subscription fee of about $10 per month. Both Xbox Live Silver and Gold members can subscribe to online play, but Gold members will receive no discount. The open beta of the upcoming Phantasy Star Universe is coming to Live Marketplace this weekend. There is no exact date listed for the beginning of the beta so, start looking for it on Marketplace tomorrow -- or you can feverishly check every five minutes, like me. The download will only be available for two days, so get it while the gettin's good. There is one caveat and a concern, though. The caveat: you must have Xbox Live Gold to participate -- though you'll only need Silver when the retail game ships. <strike>The concern: we have no idea whether or not you can retain your gained experience should you decide to purchase the retail version. Oh, one more thing, we can only assume that this is for North America only. European friends, let us know if you've got it in you're area. </strike>For more info on the beta, visit the official site.

PSU ships on October 24th. Until then, happy hunting.

[Thanks, Simon]

Update: Contributor vid33nyc1 pointed us to a handy Q&A thread in the PSU forums that cleared up some questions.

The beta will be available in the US, Europe, and Japan.

Whatever happens in the beta, stays in the beta. No levels, items, etc. will carry over into the retail version.

Earlier today, Sega announced that the open beta would begin tomorrow, be available to download for until Thursday, and be playable until next Wednesday (October 18). However, that has since been changed to "very soon" with a note from a site admin that the beta will be available "in the coming days."

Sega "highly recommends" that players who join the beta tinker with the plethora of customization options. Not only do they promise fun, but it also helps them work out the kinks ahead of time. Featured in the beta will be three planets (Parum, Neudaiz, and Moatoob), three classes (Hunter, Ranger, and Force), and an unfurnished personal space aptly dubbed "My Room."

We'll let you know when the official date is finalized. Phantasy Star Universe for Xbox 360 will land on store shelves October 24 (meaning any bugs you find will likely require a day-of-purchase online update).

[Thanks for everyone who sent this in!]
Phantasy Star Universe open beta coming "very soon" originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Oct 2006 23:25:00 EST. At the time we were hoping that SEGA would subsidize the game with <strike>horse armor</strike> microtransactions. Unfortunately, it looks like that's not the case. Rob from Orange Lounge Radio sent us the bad word this morning:

" ... Sega sent an e-mail this week that corrected what they had earlier communicated to us about PSU being free online... it's now set to be $9.99 a month."

$9.99 isn't that bad -- certainly better than some MMOs -- but it sure as hell isn't as nice as free. Oh, well. You can still count on seeing at least one of us 360 fanboys on there (i.e. me). Just think of it this way, we have the only version with voice chat. That's worth 10 simoleons, right?
PSU isn't free after all originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Sep 2006 09:30:00 EST. Unfortunately, however, Nintendo of Japan has one weakness: Role Playing Games.

1. Phantasy Star Universe - PS2 - 120,202 | NEW
2. New Super Mario Bros. - NDS - 72,763 | 2,974,027
3. More DS Brain Training - NDS - 46,662 | 3,119,857
4. Final Fantasy III - NDS - 45,949 | 549,001
5. Tingle RPG - NDS - 45,496 | NEW
6. Nintendo DS Talking Cooking Navi - NDS - 35,689 | 419,733
7. Mario Hoops 3-on-3 - NDS - 34,001 | 267,763
8. Animal Crossing : Wild World - NDS - 32,605 | 3,181,735
9. Rhythm Tengoku - GBA - 28,361 | 123,432
10. Tamagotchi Connexion Corner Shop 2 - NDS - 27,540 | 458,474

Yes, an RPG invariably ends up on this list upon its release in Japan, no matter how clichèd or unoriginal it may be. Final Fantasy III performed a similar feat last week, but looking at the impossibly attenuated sales, one can only assume they're running real short on copies over there. Oh well, we can't be kings forever, right?

(This post in no way bashes Phantasy Star Universe or any of its fine publishers or developers. It's just that the game can't possibly be as cool as any other on this list. Some of them have been seen before, but the one above is apparently new to Western eyes. The video quality isn't that great, and surprisingly it's not much better on the official Japanese site either. Still, we're starved for some more MMO lovin' and we'll take what we can get. For those of you Sony fanboys that'll avoid the Wii like its a smelly grandmother, there's finally an alternative: Sega Genesis Collection, a compliation of nearly thirty Genesis games is heading to the PSP. The disc will not only come loaded with the games, but exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. PSP owners can rejoice in knowing that an exclusive wireless multiplayer mode is being created just for them. Maybe it'll even support Game Sharing? (I hope so!) Here's the list of games:
The scans feature some of the new monsters as well as the new "Partner Machinery" which will replace the MAG system from previous installments. Also featured are some of the new vehicles, including a mountable and adorable <strike>chocobo</strike> dinosaur. Unfortunately, as Famitsu insists on publishing all of its articles in Japanese, I can't read any of it.

I'm the new guy, and this is my inaugural post. My inaug-u-post, if you will. Enjoy.

During E3, the fine people of PSO World sat down with Takao Miyoshi, producer of Phantasy Star Universe, and asked him a few questions. The interview covers some of the new features in the game, including race specific special abilities, player controlled vehicles (!), and the new player lobbies. The new lobbies will actually encompass entire cities and can host up to 1,000 players. The vehicles are varied and include tanks, jet skis, and even mountable beasts that breathe fire. When asked about the possibility of cross-platform play (the PC and PS2 servers already support it), Mr. Miyoshi said only, "It is actually something that is not finalized." Not finalized? That means there's hope right?

Whether or not 360 owners will be able to school PC and PS2 players, they can rest easy in the knowledge that voice chat will be 360 exclusive when the game ships this fall.
Takao Miyoshi Talks Phantasy Star Universe originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Jun 2006 20:09:00 EST.
