It's almost Halloween, and it's likely you're pretty much set on what you're dressing up as this year. If you're thinking <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/samus">Samus</a>, think again: Dan Cattell's sprite-based Samus and Chozo Statue costumes are without equal. In fact, they're even featured in the latest issue of <em>Nintendo Power</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/26/this-retro-metroid-cosplay-is-without-equal/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>This retro Metroid cosplay is without equal</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/26/this-retro-metroid-cosplay-is-without-equal/">This retro Metroid cosplay is without equal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Oct 2011 00:00:00 EST. A "games oriented developer" known as <a href="http://gltovar.com/blog/?p=210">gltovar</a> commissioned Xtreme Kreations to alter the case of his MacBook; the result being the slick airbrushed Samus image seen above with some light-up armor elements (using the lights that normally illuminate the Apple logo on the case). It must have taken more than two hours to assemble, or Samus wouldn't be wearing her armor in the image.<br />
<br />
Luckily for us, gltovar took lots of pictures of the process and result, so we can enjoy the effect without "enjoying" the deconstruction and artful slicing of our own premium laptops. Check out the video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/24/the-other-m-is-for-macbook-in-this-samus-laptop-mod/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The other M is for 'MacBook' in this Samus laptop mod</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/24/the-other-m-is-for-macbook-in-this-samus-laptop-mod/">The other M is for 'MacBook' in this Samus laptop mod</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 24 Jan 2011 18:30:00 EST. At the end of the clip, a spheroid Samus rolled in, leading many to believe she was being teased as a playable character for the 3DS fighter.<br />
<br />
Speaking to <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-01-24-samus-not-playable-in-dead-or-alive-3ds">Eurogamer</a>, Team Ninja leader Yosuke Hayashi countered this assertion. "This time she's not playable," Hayashi said. "But Samus Aran will be shown in the game. She comes to help the player. That's the collaboration shown there [in the trailer]." Hayashi suggested that a playable Nintendo character ran counter to the team's goal with <em>Dimensions</em>, which is "basically to create the best version of Dead or Alive." <br />
<br />
As for that non-playable appearance, it'll be an unlockable bonus. Hayashi encouraged players to find out how to unlock the bounty <strike>hunter</strike> helper on their own.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/24/samus-wont-be-playable-in-dead-or-alive-dimensions/">Samus won't be playable in Dead or Alive Dimensions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 24 Jan 2011 16:00:00 EST. Nintendo's collaboration with Tecmo's Team Ninja didn't end with last year's <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m">Metroid: Other M</a></em>. A new trailer for 3DS fighter <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-or-alive-dimensions">Dead or Alive Dimensions</a></em> reveals a dangerous arena encircled by lava and stalked by Ridley, the winged nemesis of Samus Aran. He's not one for mild-mannered spectating, instead spitting fire and taking an unfortunate combatant for an undignified tour around the ring.<br />
<br />
The trailer also shows that Samus has been authorized to drop a power bomb in the middle of the stage. It's flashy, and detonated without the preface of trashy fighting words -- umm, not that any DOA fighter could handle the deadpan delivery of her <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE8RTKBFlBI">Other Monologues</a>.<br />
<br />
See the video after the break, along with a trailer that shows off more gameplay and many of the game's slightly more realistic environments. You'll probably recognize a few from <em>Dead or Alive 3</em> and <em>Dead or Alive 4</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/dead-or-alive-dimensions-has-ridley-stage-samus-cameo-roll/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dead or Alive Dimensions has Ridley stage, Samus cameo roll</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/dead-or-alive-dimensions-has-ridley-stage-samus-cameo-roll/">Dead or Alive Dimensions has Ridley stage, Samus cameo roll</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 15:00:00 EST. So he and his dad set out to build a replica of Samus's <em>Metroid Prime</em>-era Varia Suit, starting with the arm cannon. The final cannon has a speaker and LED lights controlled by an <a href="http://www.arduino.cc/">Arduino</a> microcontroller, so it can be made to fire simulated Power Beam, Plasma Beam and charged shots. Joseph even has to correctly "log in" to use it!<br />
<br />
The rest of the costume is still incomplete, but at this point Joseph has a perfectly acceptable backup costume: "Guy With This Awesome Arm Cannon."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/22/father-and-son-create-elaborate-samus-arm-cannon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Father and son create elaborate Samus arm cannon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/22/father-and-son-create-elaborate-samus-arm-cannon/">Father and son create elaborate Samus arm cannon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Oct 2010 11:00:00 EST. We've all got old, crummy games laying around. You could either throw those away or you could make a nice piece of folk art, like this sculpture of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/samus">Samus</a> created by JJ Hendricks. For $300, you get a spaceship that benefits from the most attentive and accurate craftsmanship. It's not quite what intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran paid when she commissioned her gunship, but then ... this one is quite a bit smaller. And it's only a model (shh!). <br />
<br />
As part of only 750 units shipping in Q2 2011, this <em>Metroid Prime</em> ship model from <a href="https://www.first4figures.com/component/option,com_myphp/Itemid,3/product,81/">First 4 Figures</a> boasts a height of 12 inches, a swivel joint on its base, an elaborate sequence of LEDs and "unprecedented levels of realism and accuracy," thanks to its slavish recreation from the original game files and canon. Note: The rear-mounted plasma beam cannon is probably less functional in this instance.<br />
<br />
If you're in the position to order one of these (and you can opt for a three-month payment plan if need be), don't forget to leave space on the mantelpiece for future entries in the Metroid gunship line. First 4 Figures is probably working on a miniature of the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m">Metroid: Other M</a></em> gunship already, complete with Confession Time booth and compartments for Samus' cyber-diary and violin.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/29/metroid-prime-model-gunship-boasts-unprecedented-levels-of-real/">Metroid Prime model gunship boasts 'unprecedented levels of realism and accuracy'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 01:00:00 EST. Sometimes, we wonder what it would be like if versions of ourselves from the past could be magically transported to today and have their minds blown by all the technological advances in video gaming technology. We have a feeling that they'd be disinterested in our "movement controllers" and "big definition graphicals," and would instead become entranced by a new Flash game by <a href="http://www.exploding-rabbit.com/">Exploding Rabbit</a> that's sweeping the nation at terrifying velocities: <a href="http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/534416"><em>Super Mario Crossover</em></a>.<br />
<br />
The premise of the game is simple: It is the original <em>Super Mario Bros</em>., only your choice of playable characters isn't just limited to squat, Italian plumbers. You can also wreck Goombas while playing as Link, Mega Man, Samus, Simon Belmont or Bill (you know, from <em>Contra</em>). You could also just be Mario, but why would you do that, when you could be Bill from <em>Contra</em>? Stop being so silly.<br />
<br />

We don't get why somebody would do such a thing, but this mod by Flotonic, which inserts the space bounty hunter from <em>Metroid</em> into <em>The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time</em>, is pretty nifty nonetheless. The only issue is that the brief video clip -- which you can watch past the break -- doesn't show Samus pulling off any of her classic moves in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ocarina-of-time"><em>Ocarina of Time</em></a>. She doesn't morph into a ball and she doesn't fire a single shot from her arm cannon, but oh boy does she look good in the game.<br />

We love our parents, don't get us wrong, but we seriously missed out on a large part of <em>awesome</em> during our childhood thanks to <a href="http://tokyohunter.blogspot.com/2009/07/dimension-diver-rockman-color-resin-kit.html">these wonderful statues</a>. Featuring your standard blue Mega Man, little sister Roll, and Chozo-suited Samus (among others), the set of resin statues was created by our new BFF, Dimension Diver (not to be confused with <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sj7UBgVVew8">Holy Diver</a>, though just as awesome). Head past the break to check out Samus and Roll, but be sure to hit up <a href="http://tokyohunter.blogspot.com/2009/07/dimension-diver-rockman-color-resin-kit.html">Tokyo Hunter</a> if you're looking for more gaming characters. Cosplay is a double-edged sword. There's the scary edge, of course, with some less than savvy design work and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-cosplay/1010621/">implementation</a> (if you care to put it so kindly). Then there's the awesome side, the side where we see things like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/how-to-make-a-portal-gun-replica-hint-its-not-easy/">this</a>. Add this blog post to the second category. Frankly, this Samus Aran costume is about as awesome as it gets. We mean that in the true sense of awesome too, as in "to inspire awe." Seriously, if you look at some of <a href="http://www.yukicosplay.com/cosplays/samus/samus.htm">these pictures</a>, you'd think they were screenshots from a new <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/metroid"><em>Metroid</em></a> game.<br /><br />The costume was made by Tha&iacute;s Jussim, a Brazillian cosplayer who goes by the alias Yuki. She's created plenty of costumes -- which can be viewed at her <a href="http://www.yukicosplay.com/">website</a> -- but this one takes the cake. It weighs about 23 pounds and contains 73 LEDs. Add a Nerf blaster into the arm cannon and it would be perfect.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=75379">GoNintendo</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://mdb.classicgaming.gamespy.com/?g=features&amp;p=cosplay">Source</a> - Metroid Database interview with Thais Jussim<br /><a href="http://www.yukicosplay.com/">Source</a> - YukiCosplay.com<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/watch-your-socks-this-samus-cosplay-will-knock-them-off/">Watch your socks, this Samus cosplay will knock them off</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Mar 2009 13:30:00 EST. <br /> <span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"> <script> var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Top_5_Biggest_Nintendo_Tear_Jerkers'; </script> <script src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span> The video games as art debate is a ridiculous sham. It seems that many who fall on the "games are not art" side have rarely or never played a video game, often a product of an older generation. If your only experience with video games is hearing news reports about 7 year olds beating up hookers in <em>Grand Theft Auto</em>, then of course your view will be ignorant and bigoted. But that doesn't give critical validity to start creating arguments against that with which you are very unfamiliar. I know surprisingly little about Somalian Islamic Literature, which is why I don't make inflammatory statements about it. To suggest that any video game is incapable of being art is remarkably narrow-minded. <br /><br /> Television and movies choreograph all characters' actions and responses, leaving the viewer as a mere canvas on which the creator's views and reactions are imprinted. Though it's often that a viewer connects with a character and draws individual interpretations, their failures and triumphs can always be placed on the choices of the individual. With gaming, however, the connection can be just as deep, and to some, deeper. When our character fails, we grumble. When our character succeeds, we rejoice. Don't like the outcome? Well, then, you should've done things differently, dummy. While I'm not suggesting that games are <em>better</em> than film, they are simply different and arguably just as valid as high art. At a primitive level, it's not uncommon to punch the sofa in anger after failing a gaming objective. Just the same, it's nearly expected to vocalize with triumph after conquering the same obstacle. Emotional response does not automatically equal art, but creating something which vents one's senses and emotions and appeals to those of others certainly is. Different than stubbing your toe or finding 20 bucks in the street, gaming situations were carefully orchestrated to provide an experience which is dependent on the gamer to interpret. Why should emotions such as fear, love, and sadness be excluded from gaming? <br /><br /> Making my way down from my soapbox, I'll say that perhaps the most intimate display of emotion is crying. Here's the Top 5 moments in gaming that seem to get me every time. <strong>SPOILER ALERT:</strong> I hate having something ruined just as much as you do, so I'm giving a fair warning right now. This list contains spoilers for several high profile Nintendo titles. None are from the Wii (excluding the Virtual Console), but I will say that the fifth item refers to the WiiWare-bound <em>Cave Story</em>. If you haven't played the game and plan on purchasing it (which you definitely should!), <em>please</em> skip to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/13/top-5-4">number four</a>. <br /></div>

What is it that elevates Jenni's cosplay above others? Simple: the outfits are obviously beautifully made, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pixelninjas-cosplay/1041084/full/">props</a> are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pixelninjas-cosplay/1041083/full/">brilliant</a> (we <em>really</em> need <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pixelninjas-cosplay/1041088/full/">a giant Goomba</a> now, though yes, we know it isn't <em>actually</em> that size), and there's a sense of humor about her work. Well, Raccoon Mario's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pixelninjas-cosplay/1041087/full/">sudden appearance</a> made us laugh, anyway.<br /><br />Oh, and who hasn't encountered <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pixelninjas-cosplay/1041089/full/"><em>this</em></a> problem? Nintendo has a ton of memorable characters. Donkey Kong, Link, Fox McCloud, Samus and, of course, the lovable Mario, just to name a few. We all know <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/27/ds-daily-favorite-nintendo-game/">which Nintendo game</a> is our favorite, but we were wondering which of Nintendo's huge stable of memorable faces is your favorite? We've been able to pry some exclusive images out of the i am 8 bit showrunners -- here they are in gallery-tastic form, just for you. As a wallpaper-friendly reminder, be sure to click the "Hi Res" button in the upper right corner to get some enormo versions of the art. It's the best way to have a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/i-am-8-bit-2008/953329/full/">technicolor Samus</a> gracing your desktop.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/19/i-am-8-bit-returns-with-a-new-show-in-los-angeles/">new gallery show</a> will open on August 14th in Los Angeles, and will run through September 7th. If you can't make it West, don't worry ... Joystiq will have you covered. Check back on the evening of the 14th for a plethora of photos from the show. That is, if we haven't hocked our laptops to buy this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/i-am-8-bit-2008/953327/full/"><em>Dig Dug</em> meets <em>Animal Crossing</em> piece</a>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/i-am-8-bit-2008/">i am 8-bit: 2008</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/i-am-8-bit-2008/#977859"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/dsc_0603_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/i-am-8-bit-2008/#977852"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/dsc_0607_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/i-am-8-bit-2008/#977828"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/dsc_0610_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/i-am-8-bit-2008/#977787"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/dsc_0609_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/i-am-8-bit-2008/#977759"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/dsc_0605_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/31/joystiq-exclusive-a-sneak-peek-at-the-upcoming-i-am-8-bit-show/">Joystiq Exclusive: a sneak peek at the upcoming i am 8 bit show</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 31 Jul 2008 15:20:00 EST. First 4 Figures has come back around full circle, after completing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/04/new-from-first-4-figures-sheik/">Sheik</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/05/first4figures-new-toys-feature-pre-attitude-sonic/">Sonic and his pals</a>, now they've got <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/19/zero-suit-samus-the-figurine/">yet another Samus</a> statue. This one, in our opinion, totally trumps all of their past efforts. Just <em>look at the thing</em>.<br /><br />Of course, the catch is that this <em>costs a bunch of money</em>. $224.99 in money, to be exact. For those of you with a winning lottery ticket, this goes on sale Q1 of next year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/10/phazon-suit-samus-statue-is-ridiculously-nice/">Phazon Suit Samus statue is ridiculously nice</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Jul 2008 20:00:00 EST. If you've never laid eyes on ths coin before, then you probably never worked directly for Nintendo. It was given out as a thank you for the successful launch of the DS to Nintendo employees, as you can see the words surrounding the DS-side of the coin clearly state just that. And, with the bid at $31 at the time of this post, it's also a pretty neat collectible for the DS-obsessed that won't break the bank.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamesniped.com/2008/07/05/nintendo-ds-commemorative-launch-coin/">Gamesniped</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/unique-nintendo-coin-celebrates-a-successful-ds-launch/">Unique Nintendo coin celebrates a successful DS launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 00:00:00 EST. It caused us to wonder what other kind of team-up could be not only a commercial success, but also a game we actually want to play.<br /><br />And, like responsible bloggers, we decided that we couldn't think of anything good and instead would pass the buck onto you. So, what do you all think? Can you come up with some titles? How about a <em>Duck Hunt</em> clone where <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/05/wherefore-art-thou-mega-man/">Mega Man</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/friday-video-samus-joins-the-ultimate-alliance/">Samus</a> compete to see who can shoot the most clay Metroids? Or, what about having Dante from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dante_%28Devil_May_Cry%29"><em>Devil May Cry</em></a> in a <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/30/wii-fanboy-review-no-more-heroes/">No More Heroes</a> </em>sequel?<br /><br />Of course, that last one is just a selfish suggestion from us.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/wii-warm-up-forming-a-dynamic-duo/">Wii Warm Up: Forming a dynamic duo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 08:00:00 EST. You see, Vicarious Visions, the developers behind <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/22/the-ultimate-alliance-forms-again-in-2009/"><em>Marvel: Ultimate Alliance</em></a> for the PS2, wanted to include both Samus and Link into the game and apparently did without Nintendo's consent. There's a lot of confusion surrounding it and, supposedly, when Nintendo was shown the characters were included in the PS2 version of the game, told Activision to cut them out. The rest is just a bunch of confusing history.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/friday-video-samus-joins-the-ultimate-alliance/">Friday Video: Samus joins the Ultimate Alliance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 May 2008 19:00:00 EST. Oh, Samus, did you lose all of your suit's abilities <em>again</em>? It's all very well being able to play as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/23/master-chief-comes-to-ps3-courtesy-of-unreal-tournament/">Master Chief</a> or Marcus Fenix in <em>Unreal Tournament 3</em>, but what about Nintendo fans? Who can they play as? Thankfully, one skillful modder has created a Samus Aran character model to placate the <em>UTIII</em> playing Nintendo mob. The model itself looks excellent and we can't wait to try it out. You can find more information as well as links to the mod (cooked for the PS3, naturally) at <a href="http://www.ut3mod.com/2008/04/character-samus-aran.html">ut3mod.com</a>. Go check it out and let us know what you think.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/04/samus-enters-the-unreal-tournament-iii-fray/">Samus enters the Unreal Tournament III fray</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Apr 2008 12:00:00 EST. Brawl</em>. Nintendo, the wonderful and kind souls they are, decided this crummy little blog was good enough to get a copy of the game along with the press. A single tear poured down my cheek, kind of like that recycling commercial. It was a magical moment.<br /><br />I then realized <em>I had to work</em> today and couldn't get my game on. As the day progressed and I tapped away at my keyboard, putting up news items and other stories that all 12 of you readers care about, the game sat there in front of my monitor, mocking me. It was almost like some kind of evil temptation, as I thought about just ducking away from my responsibilities to play. I then realized that it <em>is </em>my responsibility to play! I've got to review the damn thing, don't I?<br /><br />And when I heard that Joystiq's own <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/06/first-impressions-super-smash-bros-brawl/">Kyle Orland got a copy of the game too</a>, I decided a few mutliplayer matches were in order. And in the interest of those who don't want anything spoiled for them, <span style="font-weight: bold;">stop reading here</span>. The rest of you can head past the break where the <span style="font-style: italic;">real</span> action is.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/06/wii-fanboy-takes-super-smash-bros-brawl-wi-fi-for-a-test-drive/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii Fanboy takes Super Smash Bros. If you're still searching for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/case/">perfect case</a> for your DS Lite, you might want to check out these handmade options by eBay's <a href="http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZmunkybaby05">munkybaby05</a>. Made with yarn, felt, and plastic canvas, these cases are adorably geeky, and according to the seller, will fit snugly on any DS Lite. <br /><br />There's two <em>Metroid </em>options, including the one pictured above and a Samus vs. metroid case. If you prefer the <em>Legend of Zelda</em> as your game of choice, though, she also has a case featuring Link and another with a sparkly Triforce.<br /><br />The cutest of all, though, are the Mario-themed cart cases, which are shaped like little boxes and can hold about nine or ten games. The game holders are available in red mushroom, green mushroom, or question block designs.<br /><br />Currently they're not too expensive for handmade items ($18 including shipping and handling for the DS Lite cases, $11 for the game cases), but of course, you never know with eBay.<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://gamemusic4all.com/">GenoBoost</a>!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/02/nintendo-themed-cases-bring-style-to-your-ds/">Nintendo-themed cases bring style to your DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 02 Mar 2008 16:00:00 EST. We have yet to hear of any Kirby or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/vc-monday-madness-adventures-of-lolo-2-super-street-fighter-ii/">Lolo</a> tattoos, so we'll assume the former. This tattoo featuring Samus Aran curled up into a Morph Ball, based on <a href="http://mdb.classicgaming.gamespy.com/?g=mp"><em>Metroid Prime</em></a> concept art, is worth at least five incomprehensible kanji tattoos and three or four skulls. It's <em>that </em>good.<br />To (total weenies like) us, the most impressive thing about tattoos is that each one represents so much physical pain. For example, Stephen here <em>loves Metroid</em> so much that he was willing to be burned continuously with a needle for three hours. We haven't even committed to buying fabric for a plush Metroid yet.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/arm-morphed-into-metroid-tribute/">Arm morphed into Metroid tribute</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Jan 2008 18:00:00 EST. <br />It's unlikely to ever <em>actually happen</em>, but have you ever pondered what a new 2D <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroid/">Metroid</a> on the Wii would look like? Artist Alchemist Defined evidently thought long and hard about it, before committing his vision to canvas. The end result is ... well ... frankly, it's <em>stunning</em>, and if there really is some almighty, omnipresent deity watching over us all, there'll be a game that looks very similar to this in development now at Retro.<br /><br />There's a selection of bigger, more wallpaper-friendly versions of this over at the artist's site, as linked below. Viewing them comes highly recommended.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=177062">CVG</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/07/evidently-2d-metroid-on-the-wii-would-rock-our-world/">Evidently, 2D Metroid on the Wii would rock our world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Dec 2007 23:00:00 EST. This Samus number effortlessly trumps the lot, however.<br /><br />For starters, <em>it's Samus</em>. Samus cosplay is <em>not </em>a walk in the park, kids. We can only <em>begin</em> to imagine the sheer frustration involved in accurately recreating the Power Suit, with all of its peculiar angles and ridges (not to mention those awkward shoulder spheres). Which makes this effort, featuring Swedish student Jenni K&auml;llberg, all the more admirable.<br /><br />More pictures after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/20/against-all-odds-samus-cosplay-looks-surprisingly-good/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Against all odds, Samus cosplay looks surprisingly good</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/20/against-all-odds-samus-cosplay-looks-surprisingly-good/">Against all odds, Samus cosplay looks surprisingly good</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Nov 2007 22:40:00 EST. <div align="left">It's not often you'll find us complimenting the quality of an individual's cosplay, so <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/29/the-joystiq-weekend-october-27-29-2007/">when</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/26/pax-07-objection-cosplay-is-awesome/">we</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/22/tgs-cosplayers-gallery/">do</a> it's sort of a big deal. Anyway, you get the picture.<br /> <br /> Jenni, playing the part of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Metroid/">Metroid</a></em>'s Samus Aran, captures the essence of the character thanks to a fairly accurate costume, and fantastic setting. The complete set features <a href="http://pixelninja.se/photo.html">15 different photos</a>, and outside of the shots where she dons the helmet, they're really worthy of praise. Lucas just might be our new favorite character to hate, as today the dojo reveals his special move list. Sure, Fox has the annoying ability to reflect <em>everything</em> and spam his pistol across the whole level, but Lucas might have him beat with the Psi Magnet maneuver you see above. It allows him to absorb projectiles and turn it into health.<br /><br />Since our favorite character is Samus, he could very well be a lot of trouble to fight.<br /><br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/dojo-update-lucas-is-packing-some-moves/">Dojo update: Lucas is packing moves</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Nov 2007 16:00:00 EST. It's another week and that means another 5 days full of updates over at the dojo. Today showcases the variety of maneuvers Samus can perform while in her <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/19/dojo-update-zero-suit-samus/">Zero Suit</a>, which you may or may not know occurs when she <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/18/dojo-update-zero-laser/">lays the smack down</a> <em>hard</em>. Personally, we can't wait to give her a try in both forms, so that we may see which is better for us. Considering she was our favorite character in <em>Melee</em>, we're sure we'll like playing as her again.<br /><br />
<br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/08/dojo-update-zero-suit-samus-special-moves/">Dojo update: Zero Suit Samus special moves</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Oct 2007 13:30:00 EST. There just might be a new level to topple our current favorite from <em>Smash Bros. Melee</em>, Hyrule. Not only is this stage a wonderful piece of nostalgia, it is also fairly functional and includes a feature we wish more stages had: nowhere to fall to your death. Seriously, we hate ourselves some <em>plunging to doom</em>. Oh, and occasionally a Metal Gear will appear. Basically, we've developed TMJ from looking at Ramon's mods.<br /><br />This one is the coolest one yet. In addition to the awesome backlit, <em>custom-made</em> Samus Aran emblem, the case mod integrates a Wiimote charger in its illuminated stand. The Wii disc slot glows green in imitation of Samus's visor; even the Wiimote and Nunchuk are painted the metallic green of Samus's arm cannon.<br /><br />Like the others, this modded Wii is being auctioned off on eBay, and 15% of the selling price will go to Penny Arcade's <a href="http://www.childsplaycharity.org/">Child's Play</a> charity. In return, 100% of the awesome modded Wii will go to the buyer. <br /><br />Check after the break for a couple of choice closeups! And then check your wallet for the <em>hundreds of dollars</em> required to buy this.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/mods/samus-wii-mod-tucks-rolls-explodes-with-goodness-303933.php">Gizmodo</a>; thanks, Jeremy!]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/metroid-wii-mod-is-cooler-than-a-blast-from-an-ice-beam/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metroid Wii mod is cooler than a blast from an Ice Beam</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/metroid-wii-mod-is-cooler-than-a-blast-from-an-ice-beam/">Metroid Wii mod is cooler than a blast from an Ice Beam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Sep 2007 15:00:00 EST. <p>Continuing our romp through the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/30/metroid-week-judge-a-metroid-by-its-cover/"><em>Metroid</em> series's boxart history</a>, we're ending today with a look at covers from Samus's prime installments on both handhelds and consoles. We've also thrown in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/boxart">packaging designs</a> from the <em>NES Classics</em> releases which we neglected to include yesterday, though none of you noticed. As for music pairings, the boxarts past the post break go best with The Commodores's "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1aJPw7C8TY">Three Times a Lady</a>." Seriously, try it.</p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/31/metroid-week-judge-a-metroid-by-its-cover-part-two/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metroid Week: Judge a Metroid by its cover (part two)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/31/metroid-week-judge-a-metroid-by-its-cover-part-two/">Metroid Week: Judge a Metroid by its cover (part two)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 31 Aug 2007 20:00:00 EST. This is why odd little events like <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/metroidweek"><span style="font-style: italic;">Metroid</span> week</a> are so great. Not only do we get to wallow in all things <span style="font-style: italic;">Metroid</span>, but as the week winds down, we get to celebrate with a great little song and video from Uncle Monsterface about one of gaming's biggest revelations. Let's take a little trip back in time -- and behind the break -- to see what it's all about.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/31/friday-video-oh-no-youre-not/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Friday Video: Oh no you're not</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/31/friday-video-oh-no-youre-not/">Friday Video: Oh no you're not</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 31 Aug 2007 17:20:00 EST. <br /> You know how much we love to discuss <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/boxart/">boxart</a> here at Wii Fanboy, so it seemed obvious to us that we should take a look back at past <span style="font-style: italic;">Metroid</span> covers during our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroidweek">commemorative week</a>. We've gathered up all the packaging art we could find from Samus's tenderfoot days on the NES to her later outings on the Game Boy Advance, and have posted them all past the post break for you to scroll through. Feel free to queue up Kenny Rogers's "<a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=NFB5NkTQ94o">Through The Years</a>" for maximum enjoyment.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/30/metroid-week-judge-a-metroid-by-its-cover/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metroid Week: Judge a Metroid by its cover</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/30/metroid-week-judge-a-metroid-by-its-cover/">Metroid Week: Judge a Metroid by its cover</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Aug 2007 18:10:00 EST. The culture of gaming (and especially comics) is chock full of hypothetical battles, often ending in heated geek debate. And this browser game is no different. But, seeing as how we're <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroidweek">celebrating</a> something here this week, we felt compelled to share this game with you.<br /><br />The controls aren't the best and you actually control Mega Man the entire time, but it's still got enemies and areas from the original <em>Metroid </em>title.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/29/metroid-week-a-browser-game-mash-up/">Metroid Week: A browser game mash-up</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Aug 2007 14:15:00 EST. One of the best things about conventions of any kind is seeing all of the people dressing up as their favorite characters from games and manga. And considering PAX just came to a close and what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroidweek">week this is</a>, we figured we could post some of our internet finds on cosplaying Samus Arans. So, for some of the best (and worst) costumes, head past the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/metroid-week-the-many-faces-of-samus-aran/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metroid Week: The many faces of Samus Aran</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/metroid-week-the-many-faces-of-samus-aran/">Metroid Week: The many faces of Samus Aran</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 22:15:00 EST. Pushed back to September 2nd, it looks like you Amazon users are left up a creek lacking a paddle. That, we must say, really <em>bites</em>.<br /><br />So, have any of you chosen a refund and decided to go and track it down out in the real world, at a brick and mortar retail location? Or will you wait around for Amazon to ship your copy to you?<br /><br />[Thanks, Eric!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/amazon-delays-shipping-copies-of-metroid-prime-3/">Amazon delays shipping copies of Metroid Prime 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 13:35:00 EST.
