Welcome to another edition of It's-a Mario World, where we seemingly spend more time blathering about Mario games than we do playing them. In last week's feature debut, we presented a gallery detailing some of the elusive pickups of Mushroom Kingdom history. This week, we begin a two-part catalogue of our hero's job experience, analyzing the many professions Mario has belonged to in his 27-year career, and in what capacity. Attempting chronology and comprehensiveness, this is indeed Mario's Super Résumé.

Not content with the popular belief that Mario is simply a plumber by trade, we've scoured the known Nintendo universe to find out exactly what else he has been. Considered altogether, the results are pretty impressive. More than a mere adventurer, Mario has championed everything from the assembly line to the tennis courts. Refer yourself to our gallery where you'll be shocked and amazed at the varying talents of our red-capped protagonist.
Every Thursday, we'll bring you a fresh perspective on Mario games and culture, emphasizing his lesser-discussed titles and memorable game content for your nostalgic enjoyment. In this first issue, join us as we reminisce about Mario's hard-to-find power-ups.

You know the common fare: Mushrooms, flowers and stars comprise the mainstay arsenal in any Mario game, and other traditional items like golden coins and 1-ups are found in sequels and off-shoots everywhere. But what about the obscured items of Mushroom Kingdom history, the rare perishables you rationed and strange pick-ups you briefly adored? Why didn't they catch on? Were they too uncouth for mainstream appeal? Let our gallery shed some light on these shadowy items of utmost rarity.
Who needs 'em? We never did. Growing up, we never talked about moblins or lynel in The Legend of Zelda. We talked about the spear dudes and those stupid #*@&$^) centaur guys (except with more colorful metaphors). We were dirty, dirty children who shouldn't have been allowed to mix with the other children. But the point is, manual-reading aside, the official names for creatures in video games just never seemed to stick with us. Oh, maybe some (evil) people could summon the precise names for Lakitus and Metools, but we were not those people.

This is why we like Castlevania. You know what a Fish Head is? It's a freakin' fish-headed monster. Even we can remember that. But what about you?
DS Daily: Those pesky names originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jun 2007 09:00:00 EST.
Virtually Overlooked has taken over Wii Fanboy! All this week, members of the staff will be outlining their personal picks for future Virtual Console releases.

My path through gaming history is very haphazard and filled with missed turns. Somehow, I managed to skip several really amazing titles that I probably would have played for hours and hours, until they were imprinted in the deeper layers of my brain. I guess I just got really attached to the games that I played and loved, and as a kid with limited resources, I couldn't or wouldn't go hunting for new games. Even so, looking back at the avalanche of titles that shaped my early gaming "career," I can't help but think -- could anyone have played everything? Who were those people, and why wasn't I borrowing all their games?

But I didn't miss everything, and the games I played were games I loved. I swear, after I finally put it aside, I could have probably played the original Legend of Zelda using only my toes and a half-working controller. Well, through the Octoroks and Tektites near the beginning screens, at least. Even now, the sight of those guys makes me smile. And did anyone else have one of those awesome Zelda watches? During school hours, those things were a lifesaver. But we've already got the inaugural Zelda on the VC -- so let's look at a few of my loves that are as-yet unavailable.

This stop-motion animation shows Mario as a regular-shaped Lego man; instead of making a video as close to SMB as possible, Mario, mushrooms, enemies, and other items are warped through the Lego lens. There's a place for literal Lego game tributes, but we still like this short. This week you guys get some super classic goodies, which makes up for the fact that there's only two classic goodies.

Super Mario Bros. (NES) - 500 points
Motoroader (Turbografx) - 600 points

When we first picked up Super Mario Bros. over here (we couldn't resist), everyone immediately started singing/humming/otherwise-recreating the theme, loudly and tunelessly. This week marks the 112th consecutive appearance of the original Super Mario Bros. theme on Billboard's Hot Ringtones chart. This continues an unbroken streak of chart appearances that has gone on since Billboard started tracking ringtone sales back in November 2004.

The streak is made even more impressive when you consider that the chart only tracks ringtones that are actually sold by various major vendors. Add in all the nerds who've undoubtedly downloaded a free version to their bluetooth sets and the classic theme is probably even more ubiquitous.

Personally, I'm cheap and lazy enough to actually use the built in ringtones on my phone, but I'm always curious to see what other people use. Have any Joystiq readers actually downloaded the Mario theme to their phones? What other video game ringtones have made an impression on you?
Mario ringtone marks over two years on charts. His bride-to-be planned the cake, keeping it a secret until just before its unveiling. The entire creation -- short of the cake toppers -- was entirely edible. That means piranha plants, mushroom, everything. While the cake toppers weren't edible, they weren't easy to come by. They're part of the "Mario Family" series from Club Nintendo in Japan, only available by redeeming points from Japanese Nintendo products.

If they knew about our Gears of War contest, we're pretty sure the cake's Flickr entry would take the, uh ... you know.

[Via Boing Boing]
Three-tiered Mario mushroom cake amazes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Sep 2006 01:00:00 EST. Alright, so there's really not much here for the Joystiq reader to enjoy, but we can all admire how effortlessly Nintendo seems to get positive mainstream press; full page articles in major metropolitan papers of record about how great your franchise characters are sure ain't bad for business.

[Via Evil Avatar]
WaPo looks at Mario Bros. with doe eyes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Aug 2006 08:00:00 EST.
